Megyn Kelly Panel Clashes on Obama and the American Dream

The American Dream and optimism for a better future is a tense subject that can illicit fireworks in the political theater, as was the case on Fox News Monday during “American Live with Megyn Kelly.”

A Rasmussen Report released Sunday found that just 14 percent of Americans expect that today’s children will be better off than their parents, with 65 percent of Americans participating in the telephone survey believing they will not be better off. Another Rasmussen Reports poll released last week showed similarly dismal results from Americans on long-term optimism about the U.S. Economy, with only 31 percent of American adults believing that the U.S. economy will be stronger in one year, 35 percent predicting a weaker economy by next year and 18 percent saying it will be about the same. These statistics opened discussion moderated by Kelly Monday between conservative radio host Mike Gallagher and Democratic Party strategist Simon Rosenberg.

Rosenberg first commented that the poll on the future for American children sets the stage for major decisions voters will have to make this fall on who can restore faith with the electorate. From there, Gallagher decided to “happily make it a partisan issue,” pointing out that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney can tap into this worry about the long-term future of the country to engage younger voters who did not see the hope and change that they expected from the Obama administration and what Gallagher describes as the president’s “disastrous leadership.”

Rosenberg responded that the poll reflected American sentiments following a decade of “geopolitical change” and economic distress in America: from slow job growth in 2001, the housing crisis in 2006 and financial collapse in 2008.  Following criticisms from Gallagher towards the end of Rosenberg’s statement, Kelly pivoted the discussion to another Rasmussen poll that showed only 28 percent of Americans think it’s still possible for anyone in this country to work hard and get rich, bringing the discussion to the president’s controversial “you didn’t build that” remarks earlier in the month.

Gallagher described the comment as evidence of the president being “openly hostile and antagonistic” towards the American Dream, going on to bash “this class warfare garbage that Democrats have been engaged in.”

“This idea that somehow Barack Obama is against the American Dream–there’s probably no greater embodiment of what can happen in America than Barack Obama’s own story,” said Rosenberg, before Gallagher interjected: “What’s the American Dream Simon?”

“Let me finish” yelled back Rosenberg. “I find this conversation insulting,” the former Clinton advisor went on to say. “There is no greater embodiment of the American Dream than Barack Obama.”

“I don’t blame you for being angry Simon, you’re barking up a tree–no one’s buying what your saying,” responded Gallagher, with Rosenberg cross-commenting ”Forty-nine percent of the American people dude.”

Somehow the panel was able to close on a note of mutual appreciation for some of former President Ronald Reagan’s comments at the 1992 Republican National Convention:

“My fondest hope for each one of you — and especially for the young people here — is that you will love your country, not for her power or wealth, but for her selflessness and her idealism. May each of you have the heart to conceive, the understanding to direct, and the hand to execute works that will make the world a little better for your having been here.

May all of you as Americans never forget your heroic origins, never fail to seek divine guidance, and never lose your natural, God-given optimism.”

“Real News From The Blaze” had a lively discussion on The American Dream in the Age of Obama earlier in the month.

The vocal few who were calling Obama a liar seem to have fled the discussion so my vote is yes, you are correct. Stupid poutrage.

Obama is not a Socialist, Marxist, Communist. You people are just racist, bigoted haters!

When he announced he was running for president, the secret service had to start guarding him about six months before they normally start guarding presidential candidates, because of all the death threats he was receiving. So the question is why is that? What had he done that was so bad that they had to start guarding him that early? Did he murder somebody, rape somebody, rob a bank, commit an act of terrorism?

    No he didn’t.

All through the presidential campaign there were people protesting his candidacy, calling him a traitor, a socialist, a communist, a Muslim or an Arab, (which to their minds were all bad things) but none of this was true, and still not. What is true is that the racist right is NOW a cesspool of hate that is giving the KKK a run for their money! Blaming Obama for EVERYTHING. That’s how disgusting the racist right has become. It‘s ALL the black man’s fault!

They had to start guarding him so early because he was the first. There are crazies on both sides of the political isle. Any one who does something first will catch the most hatred. So that’s a non-issue. So you say he’s not a communist? Van Jones – openly Communist, Green Job Czar. Valerie Jarret – said Mao was her favorite political leader. She’s a senior advisor. Frank Marshall Davis – admitted Communist. Obama says he was his greatest mentor. So please tell me how any one is wrong in saying that Obama is a communist? He’s surrounded himself with them from Day 1. And I don‘t dislike him because he’s black. I dislike him for countless political differences. Thank you.

The American Dream is dead. It turned out to be a nightmare! The last four years have proven that a single Marxist regime with the power of the press has the ability to enslave us all. The Supreme Court is a fraud. The Presidency is a bigger fraud. The Congress is a joke. We will soon be hitting the reset button.

I am with you that the GOP whines about dems spending on social programs breaking the bank while happily paying BILLIONS a year to fund the defense of Europe (England/Germany,etc) and Asia(S. Korea, etc) by maintaining 900 military base ON FOREIGN SOIL they should be maintaining themselves. THAT is an empire and empires ALWAYS die in debt.

He will probably fail because he is a RINO but we have 4 more years to convince the Right Sheep to stop following Fascist RINOs and the Left Sheep to stop following Communist dictators and BOTH R/D sheep to STOP FOLLOWING SOCIALIST POLICIES like SS/Medicare/Medicaid. Over the years I have voted for Ford once, Regan twice, Bush (Poppa) twice, Dole once, Bush (Baby) twice and McCain once. Sometimes the Republicans win and sometimes they lose. With the exception of the great Ronald Regan there is very little difference between Republican and Democrat. Both Bush’s were about the same as Clinton. I have campaigned for Republican candidates and given a lot of money to Republican candidates and even with them in charge we still march to Socialism and Marxism. I am sick of the Republican National Committee shoving their RINO chosen one down our throats. They tell us to hold our nose and vote for a candidate we don’t agree with or even like. NO MORE!!!!!!! Gary Johnson will not win but there is no other choice. I will never vote for Obama. I will not vote for the RINO Romney. This only leaves Gary Johnson. Even if Romney wins the country is still lost. Too many people dependent on the government for their existence (welfare, food stamps, WIC, subsided housing, and all the other government giveaways) now know they can simply vote themselves more taxpayer goodies. If Romney wins and actually cuts the welfare state the dependent class will overwhelmingly vote the leftist back in on the next election.

With all due respect Hugh Williams, you do not know what Romney will do. He is a big government Republican, worse, he is a northern new england style republican…But you have no idea what he will be like in office. Reagan was once a California Democrat and was considered liberal before he took office.

I cannot tell you what to do. But what perplexes me is this whole, “if I can’t have it all my way then screw it all” attitude. There are too many people in this country with too many diverse ideas for a libertarian to ever win. That is why Ron Paul could get no support. You can blame whatever you like, but the majority of Americans like things to stay in the middle of the road.

I appreciate your authentic out reach to the Ron Paul supporters. I understand your reasoning but I will not be voting for Romney. Romney has not catered to Paul supporters at all. To deny Paul a spot at the convention sends the message we are neither wanted or needed.
Its Romney’s economic policy that bothers me most. If he would change his views on that issue alone I would consider voting for him, but he is no Austrian. He has expressed support for the Fed, QE and the bail outs. A lot of folks on here say Romney buys us time, but thats the problem he literally buys us time and so does Obama. They refuse to allow the market correction to take place and the longer we wait the worse it will get.
I dont believe Obama will declare martial law any time soon, I just don’t buy all the conspiracy stuff. But the economic threat of the Dollar Bubble is very real and the results will be debilitating for the USA and if I felt a Romney presidency would prevent this I would vote for him.

I strongly disagree that “there is no greater embodiment of the American Dream than Barack Obama”! The American Dream has been to work hard and earn your way; to reach your dreams through your own efforts. Sorry, but Obama is the embodiment of affirmative action not the American Dream. For that ridiculous claim to be true it would have to not matter how you reached the top as long as you got there. Hopefully for most people achieving the American Dream is about how you worked your way up, how you earned it. Otherwise we can hold up Al Capone, Bernie Madoff, and others crooks and theives who achieved wealth or success as embodiments of the American spirit.

Mike Gallagher’s an ass hat. Romney won’t tap into the young vote. He knows they’ve been shut out of the process and argued on his show that the GOP has committed suicide by doing it.

Yeah they’re definitely questioning the Commie in Chief, but has Romney sufficiently shown them that he’s any different? I don’t think so, but I’ve been wrong many times before.

The young think with their hearts, they think with their testicles…but they don’t think with their brains. They don’t have a brain. To be wise requires hindsight…something the young necessarily don’t have. It is why there is often so much dissention and strife on collage campuses…struggling to use the brains they haven’t got. Not one brain in the lot…and most of them are Democrats. I heard that some Democrat was suggesting extending voting rights to fifteen year olds.

How could Romney tap into the young vote when they must love a President that has left at least 50% of them without a job. I’d definately keep my bet on the President that promised me the world and left me a mountain of student loan debt and no job to start paying it off.

Economic mobility (The American Dream) is more possible in socialist Europe.

Too much wealth concentrated on the top stagnats money flow, it just stays in their bank accounts. When middle class people put their money back into the economy right away, and it goes back to the top., everyone wins.

PEOPLE who can are holding on to their money because WHO KNOWS what this hysterical boy-child in the WH will do??!!! THE DIFFERENCE between AMERICA, dude, and the European Countries is simple: A POOR AMERICAN in the year 2012 can very well be in the top 1% of RICH AMERICANS in the year 2018 or 2025 !!! WHERE AS if you are born POOR in Europe, you die that way, your kids stay poor. SOMEONE TRY TO GET THAT!!!!

When the boy-child commie, marxist, World Dictator Wanna-Be is sent packing, America, having learned our lesson and seeing how absolutely RIDICULOUS Liberal Socialist are…how really Provincial they are, how dumb they are and how chicken they are and how they never deserve another shot at the WH in AMERICA, since they don’t APPRECIATE AMERICA or FREEDOM.

Socialism doesn’t work ANYWHERE! For years the libs have been pointing to Europe as an example of socialism working, but as countries start to go bankrupt, now it’s Northern Europe! LOL! The only reason Europe hasn’t imploded sooner is they have been mooching off of America. They rely on us for protection, so they don’t have to spend money on their military (look what happened to the USSR when they tried to keep up with America’s military – hastened distruction). And their health care does not spend money on research they mooch off us there too. Because socialism takes away acheivement and people stop producing. Socialism does not work when people give up on paying other peoples way and stop working themselves. Then the government goes bankrupt – as we are starting to see in the European Utopia of the left. If you think it is so great, move there. Leave America free for the rest of us.

Look! Let me be clear! You didn’t build that! He want’s to give the American Dream to people for free. Buy their house for them, pay their mortgage, subsidize their utility bills, pay their cell phone, home phone, internet, food, gas, and supplement their income for them…. for their votes of course.

Now he also want’s to take all of the above away from the middle class and rich!
