BEIJING (AP) — A wild brawl broke out between Georgetown and a Chinese men’s basketball team Thursday night, putting an immediate end to a supposed goodwill game that coincided with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to the country.
The benches cleared and fights erupted all over the court with about 9 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The rest of the exhibition between Georgetown and the Bayi Rockets was called off.
Biden did not attend the game. On Wednesday, he watched the Hoyas beat the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons 98-81.
The Washington Post reported Georgetown and Bayi players tackled and threw punches at each another. Chairs and water bottles were tossed as the Hoyas headed to the locker room with the score 64-all in a testy, foul-plagued matchup.
“Tonight, two great teams played a very competitive game that unfortunately ended after heated exchanges with both teams,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said in a statement. “We sincerely regret that this situation occurred.”
Georgetown and the Rockets are scheduled to play again Sunday night in Shanghai.
The melee was the latest instance of on-court fighting by China, whose players have been fined tens of thousands of dollars by the world and Asian federations for scrapping with opponents.
Georgetown is in China on a 10-day trip which has been cited by the U.S. State Department as an example of sports diplomacy that strengthens ties between the two countries. The Hoyas were briefed by the State Department ahead of their departure on what to expect during its trip to Beijing and Shanghai, according to news releases on the university’s website.
“We remain grateful for the opportunity our student-athletes are having to engage in a sport they love here in China, while strengthening their understanding of a nation we respect and admire at Georgetown University,” Thompson III said.
A U.S. Embassy official called it an unfortunate incident.
On Thursday, Biden met with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, who is expected to take over as Communist Party chief next year. After his China trip, Biden will go to Mongolia on Monday, then travel later in the day Japan.

I notice Pickles racist comments don’t have a “report post”

Does that mean the Blaze threw that in to incite comments?

Posted on August 20, 2011 at 2:18pmWhy is the post from The Big Pickle not removed? I have been a fan of The Blaze since day one. However, allowing these kind of comments (this was not the first of its kind) is making me less and less of a fan. And do not use the free speech defense. This is a private site, and the owners can determine what speech is allowed or not allowed. This is very troubling to me. Am I wrong?

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 1:09amThis is just sick. The last thing anyone from this country should do is go to that horrible country. We should be boycotting China not sending any athletes over. I mean I give it at best50% everyone that went comes back. Shame on Georgetown and our traitor in cheif for allowing this.

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 12:05amJust guessing here. When a culture believe in respect and curtesy, and they encountered rude behavior, they would interpret that as crime of the century, and deal with it with harshness.

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 12:57amPlease visit China a few times before you comment on how they act/behave. I’ve been to China about 40 times and they do respect their own culture – but not America. I have no personal knowledge (as I’m white) but I wouldn‘t be surprised if the Hoya’s being mostly black entered into this. China does not love America. Again – please spend some time there before commenting on what caused that event.

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 12:04amI wish this story had more detail. I read an interesting first-hand account from one of the American players. He said that the officiating was so incredibly slanted that the U.S. team couldn’t even comprehend what was going on. In each quarter, Georgetown was whistled so many times that the Chinese were in the bonus by about 2.5 minutes in. The American players were incredibly frustrated by the blatant bad calls. Also, looks very much like it was aggressive Chinese players who started the fight.
Typical Commies. Cheat. If that doesn’t work, fight dirty.

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 12:18amCould it be that the referee has never even seen so much rough moves ? So, the referee kept pointing out each unruly behavior? The Chinese players should learn ahead of time about the cultural differences.

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 12:29amAll the hate for the American players here is totally out of line. The Chinese team has been fined in international play several times for rough play. They epitomize rough play. The folks commenting here have no idea what they are talking about, and I can’t believe you are all defending the Chinese over our own people without knowing the facts.]
The Chinese team plays dirty. Do a little research for yourself, instead of relying on racist stereotypes.

I think that blacks were happier during the days of physical slavery than they are today under the thumbs of the Democrat party’s, “mental”, slave-masters. I’ve never seen a more unhappy & angry group of people in my life yet they continue to vote for the very same Democrat slave-owners that have kept them chained in political & social bondage for decade after decade after decade. Unfortunately, they have never been truly freed from slavery because of the Democrat leadership and the sick thing is, the Democrat leaders are the promoters of this discusting form of mental slavery and they are only doing this for their political gain of POWER!!!
