Meltdown Fatigue? Get Used to it…Cooling Could Take 100 Days!

Many of us here at The Blaze will openly admit to being glued to coverage of the tragic situation in Japan, spending most of the past four days scouring the web and scanning the news channels for updated information. Today we learned that we may be facing another 96 days of fear-focused coverage.

Aside from the human tragedies and property devastation caused by the earthquake, news junkies have been absorbed by what CNN’s Gary Tuchman called, ‘the Traumatic Trifecta, earthquake, tsunami, and now the nuclear problem.’ We have been totally consumed by the coverage, worried that any time away might miss seeing the next big event live.

On Sunday we learned that sea water was being pumped into one reactor, a desperate, last-ditch solution that might cool the radioactive fuel, but would also doom the facility. Effectively a billion dollar write-off.

Monday’s update brings word of a second explosion at the Fukushima power plant and also news of a possible third reactor where the fuel rods have been exposed and are considered to be at risk of melting down.

If the power plants are sitting on the coastline, right next to an ocean of seawater, why can’t these power plants be stabilized? CNN’s Chad Myers explained it with great clarity and a healthy dose of emotion:

2:30 into this little rant Chad says something that I had not heard from anyone else on any channel.

It might take 100 days for these power plants to be stabilized.

Early Tuesday morning in Japan, (March 15th – yes, the Ides of March) one of the reactors at the troubled nuclear facility has exploded.  The government has issued the most grim warnings to date, telling people who live within 30km (about 19 miles) of the explosion to stay in their homes, to shelter indoors.

Those people may be bunking in for the next 96 days.

One hundred days? Has anyone ever heard of “nuclear half-life?” Try a thousand years.

Hey, I heard that there was also an earthquake, and a tus … soo …tsoo-naahmee, or something like that. And I think some people maybe were hurt, or died or whatever from that, too. There might even have been some damage to houses & stuff also. I don’t know, it’s hard to find news about it now.

Never let a tragedy go to waste as the dems say. The MSM media is running wild with this one to smear and attack the entire nuclear energy industry. The failure wasn’t the design, it was the location. A flat river basin right at the shore of the Pacific Ocean in a region known for high seismic activity. If the plant had a bad design it would have failed without the earthquake and tsunami. It was the tsunami that washed away the backup generators. Stop all this fear mongering hype and start acting rational.

Everything will be alright. I can’t believe the hype over all of this nuclear problem, what we need is congress to just enact a bill where the nuclear plant is outlawed from blowing up or spewing all that fallout into the air. Bet even Obama would take leadership on this one and the bipartisanship would be astounding.
In all seriousness though,I feel so bad for Japan and the Japanese people and hope nothing but the absolute best for them. Our country and culture could learn a lot from them.

This is such a sad tragedy for the Japanese people. They don’t have a great history with this nuke stuff – yet they tried to make the best of it and now it’s turned on them. My prayer is that people will turn to God and away from false religion and apathy – to find answers and comfort in this nightmare.

You’re tired, I know. It takes sooo much courage and strength to survive the relentless boredom of hours in your LaZboy watching Fox and rearranging your M&Ms. Stay strong. Stay tough. You will return to your regularly scheduled programming just as soon as Japanese people stop dying and nuclear power plants stop melting down. Until then, how ’bout a Fresca?

      Semper Fi, child.

I’ve stopped watching cable news – about half thier coverage is about the meltdown and possible worst case scenarios here in the US. What’s worse is all the reactionary opinions. People are suddenly against nuclear power due to an unimaginable natural disaster? Ugh. Enough…

I will say that the nuke meltdown coverage is overshadowing the tragic story of the tsunami victims and their struggles to survive, keep warm, find family and friends, ect. The media is whipping up a frenzy about a possible major disaster in the making, while starting to forget about the great disaster that has already happened to the Japanese people.
