Messiah College Professor: ‘Obama May Be the Most Explicitly Christian President in American History’

Professor: Obama May Be the Most Explicitly Christian President in American History

President Obama has consistently reiterated in interviews and speeches that he’s a Christian. But his often overt proclamations haven’t stopped critics from pointing to what they see as inexcusable inconsistencies. The president’s support for abortion rights, his infrequent church attendance and his contraceptive mandate have been only a few of the targets that detractors have pointed to when criticizing his stated faith.

Now, a Messiah College (a Christian higher educational facility) history professor has come to Obama’s defense with some bold claims in a column published on Patheos.com. John Fea, who chairs the Grantham, Pennsylvania, college’s history department, wrote that President Barack Obama “may be the most explicitly Christian president in American history.” Considering the ongoing debate over religious freedom and the contraceptive mandate that has been foisted upon the Catholic Church, this commentary comes at an interesting time.

Professor: Obama May Be the Most Explicitly Christian President in American History

President Barack Obama concludes his remarks in the Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House in Washington, Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, where he announced the revamp of his contraception policy requiring religious institutions to fully pay for birth control. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)

Fea’s argument is that Obama, despite failing to deliver on the promises he made to people of faith in 2008, may still have something to offer those individuals who embrace religion. He begins his piece by highlighting a list of Christian themes that Obama has embraced or invoked. These messages, he says, were present in the president’s controversial National Prayer Breakfast address.

As you may recall, Obama said the following during his prayer speech:

“When I talk about shared responsibility, it’s because I genuinely believe that in a time when many folks are struggling and at a time when we have enormous deficits, it’s hard for me to ask seniors on a fixed income or young people with student loans or middle-class families who can barely pay the bills to shoulder the burden alone.

And I think to myself, if I’m willing to give something up as somebody who’s been extraordinarily blessed and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually thinks that’s going to make economic sense.

But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’ teaching that, ‘for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.’”

While some critics saw these comments as a misrepresentation of Biblical truths, left-leaning believers likely embraced Obama’s claim about Jesus and taxation. Fea, though, didn’t delve too deeply into the debate surrounding this contentious portion of the speech. After listing the aforementioned Christian themes Obama is said to personally embrace, Fea wrote (emphasis mine):

Obama may be the most explicitly Christian president in American history. If we analyze his language in the same way that historians examine the religious language of the Founding Fathers or even George W. Bush, we will find that Obama’s piety, use of the Bible, and references to Christian faith and theology put most other American presidents to shame on this front. I think there may be good reasons why some people will not vote for Obama in November, but his commitment to Christianity is not one of them. [...]

Not all evangelicals like the way Obama has talked about how his Christian faith connects with his politics. But such disagreements are too often based more on politics than Christian faith. For example, Jesus said nothing about universal health care or the role of government in the lives of citizens. Jesus did, however, say that we should care for the “least of these” and to “render, therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.“ Christians can disagree on how to care for the ”least of these“ or how to ”render under Caesar,” but they should be united in the commitment to work toward the fulfillment of these commandments.

Professor: Obama May Be the Most Explicitly Christian President in American History

Arguments over Obama’s personal faith and politics have been rampant in this election cycle. Over the weekend, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum found himself embroiled in a bit of controversy over his take on the president’s beliefs. On Sunday, Santorum was explaining some of the commentary he had uttered the previous day in an attempt to temper the controversy surrounding it. The Blaze reported:

Speaking to supporters in Ohio Saturday, Santorum said Obama’s agenda is based on “some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology.”

“In the Christian church there are a lot of different stripes of Christianity,” he added. “If the president says he’s a Christian, he’s a Christian.”

Appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Santorum clarified his remarks: “I wasn‘t suggesting the president’s not a Christian. I accept the fact that the president’s a Christian.”

This, of course, is a relevant example of the debate that continues to surround Obama’s religious beliefs. Essentially, Fea‘s seems to contend that arguments against the president as a stellar Christian shouldn’t focus solely upon his policy-making (which critics say runs contrary to Christian doctrine).

Professor: Obama May Be the Most Explicitly Christian President in American History

But, despite his pro-Obama column (at least on the faith front), Fea does go on to admit that the president’s handling of the contraception issue “was a disaster.” However, he doesn’t delve into the constitutionality of mandating that faith groups violate their theological beliefs. He continues:

[Obama] has failed in his promise to reduce abortions in the United States and, as a result, protect the weakest and most vulnerable of the “least of these.” His plan to tax the richest members of society is driven by populist rhetoric, but it lacks a prophetic edge informed by the radical implications of Jesus’s teachings in the Gospels.

Fea ends by claiming that Americans will best see the president’s true colors on faith and policy, for better or for worse, if he is granted a second term (though the professor doesn’t weigh in on either side of this potential occurrence). It is then, he argues, that Obama will be faced with a decision: Either turn toward secularism or “provide a vision of faith-based political action.”

Last year, Messiah College captured headlines for inviting controversial leftist professor Frances Fox Piven to speak at the Christian, higher education facility.

Obama believes in “collective salvation” (the idea that we are all saved as a community and not as individuals), he is in favor of abortion, in favor of late term abortions, in favor of partial birth abortions, he opposes rescuing babies that survive failed abortions, his administration issued, a mandate that forces religious institutions to provide abortifacient birth control and sterilization to it’s employees and he said “if my daughter makes a mistake I don’t want her punished with a baby” As Christians we are called to mirror Jesus Christ. Are these things that Jesus Christ would say or do? Would Jesus Christ tell a pregnant woman to kill her baby so that she can have a better quality of life? Would Jesus counsel a married couple to use surgical sterilization to prevent conception? Would Jesus tell us if we sin and commit fornication we should not be punished with a baby? As Christians we have to ask ourselves, would Jesus accept money to partially remove a baby from it‘s mothers womb and then puncture it’s skull killing it? Would Jesus throw a defenseless newborn baby into a trash can after it survived a failed abortion? Would Jesus flood a pregnant woman’s womb with chemicals that will burn the baby to death? How did we get to the point that we actually believe that Jesus Christ would say or do any of these horribly sinful things or approve of us saying or doing them? Lord have mercy on us all…….

So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits. Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and do many mighty works in Your Name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you evildoers.’” (Matthew 7:15-23 RSV)

There are still strong Chistian groups out there that believe the President’s leanings towards the Muslim faith are to the point that he IS a Muslim. I don’t know if he is or not. His use of Biblical verses in the prayer meeting to say that the wealthier need to pay higher taxes is an atrocity. Suspect the President will not need an overcoat where he is going upon his departure from this earth.

Sorrry fellows, I am no Obama supporter, but he most certain has used more Christian references than any other President I have studied. Just wrote a paper last week, I had too, I didn’t want to, but it was a Reflection about how Obama‘s inaugural speech captured much of John Winthrop’s “ A Model for Christian Charity”, you know, the guy who lead the pilgrims, puritans over here to the New World. Quite a remarkable. However, I am aware of the theology of Obama’s faith, thanks to Glenn. I understand the major difference and recognize there are two different concepts. However, if one didn’t know this, they would certainly believe he had a very Christian speech. Which most don’t, so I suspect they gather he is very Christian, at least he reflect on their influences as the reason we are here today. Obama actually credits all our leaders , citing Washington in it, as follow Christian charity. However, I had noticed, as I wanted to use the “City on the Hill part”, but I couldn’t find not a single instance in the entire speech to tie it too. As a matter of fact, it was as if he intentionally made certain he didn’t. Many apologies and reaching out to the world. You could sense his distaste for our past. But, he still did give our success as credit to Christ.

Barack Hussein Obama is NOT a Christian. There is nothing Christian about Barack Hussein Obama. Never has been. Never will be. He is a Muslim. You can pray until Hell freezes over. A black Pastor, hoh is also Bishop in his church, refers to Barack Hussein Obama as minimally the False Prophet, and preaches to his congregation accordingly. Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim. Barack Hussein Obama is a deceiver, a destroyer and a profuse liar, no characteristics of which are evident in a true Christian, but all of which are present in the character of a Muslim. Barack Hussein Obama not only supports abortion, but voted at least twice in Illinois to withhold medical treatment from babies who are born alive from a botched abortion – that is also murder and not a characteristic of a true Christian.

Messiah College has left Christianity and is basically becoming apostate. Having invited Francis Piven, a devout communist and a destroyer of America, akin to Obama, is no place on the campus of a “christian” college. This Fea fellow, chair of the history department is not only deceived but a deceiver himself. Unfortunately many so called “christian” colleges are entering into apostasy with commensurate deception. such is the warnings in the Bible of the Last Days, and we are profoundly in the last days. it is quite apparent, when both the mentality, lack of spiritual awareness and blindness led many people of America to vote for and place a charlatan into the office of President.

How right you are. Also, Liberation Theology is, as you said, Collective Salvation. It’s the effect of marxism. No wonder it’s collective! It’s common to think you have to read Marx to understand the Bible. There is no individualism in the faith. No individual salvation…what a hopeless view. A Christian gives out of ‘love’, if true to his faith. Not because the government takes it. There will be no appreciation from the poor because there was no generosity involved. The rich will be bitter because so much was taken against their will. In a word, Charity, the object of Faith, is little to ‘no more’. America has always had a gererous spirit, because America always had a Christian Spirit. Charity.

To all you leftist morons that believe obahitlerstalinmao is a real christian. God says love thy neighbor as thyself, obahitlerstalinmao creates hate, racism, class warfare and the like. He also praises others that do the same. The bible says that one of the seven deadly sins is a sloth (one who sits on their butts all the time). Obahitlerstlainmao praises sloths, and wants to give more handouts to sloths creating more sloths. Hmm with just those two minor examples I have blown that out of the water. Obahitlerstalinmao is NO CHRISTIAN. I could create a larger list of sins and anti-christian things that he has done, but I don’t have the time, nor the space.

Snoopie nailed it with regard to abortion and this president. And that’s just one single issue, albeit one that most conservatives think is black and white.

How depraved do you have to be to think killing a baby is ok?

I‘m not talking about cases where the mother’s life is in jeopardy, or cases of rape or incest. I’m talking about the 98% of abortions that are performed for no other reason than that the mother doesn’t want to have the baby.

He celibrates muslim holidays and skips Christian holidays.

He attacks the religious freedoms of the Christian church while ensuring it for muslims by explicitly putting in exceptions for them in Obamacare?

He has failed to support Israel.

When he does quote the bible he misuses it. Jesus was not a socialist. The bible endorses a flat rate tax… a tenth for everyone. That is the biblical ideal of fair.

In short, Obama deviates from biblical principals in so many ways one has to conclude that he has chosen the “guiding principals” that he lives by from some other source.

“Messiah College Professor: ‘Obama May Be the Most Explicitly Christian President in American History”
Obama is an insult to the title of Christian. Weigh it our for yourself. To be a Christian is to be Christ like. Now that is tough enough for sincere Christians who , most must daily come to a reconciliation for going against God’s laws. If one is not repentant for their sinful behavior they are not Christians, they are only using the title for political purposes.

We’ve seen this all too often with Obama. Whenever there’s a risk of Obama losing votes from a particular demographic we see a magazine, a network, a mouthpiece pops up to tell us all we’re wrong and that Obama is the most (insert label here) ever. We saw this blantantly when Newsweek ran a picture of Obama with a yarmulke on when the newscycle was saturated with jews expressing doubts with Obama. We get the pictures of the Obama‘s walking to church whenever there’s a cycle of stories doubting Obama’s “christianity. Clearly..Obama cannot convince anyone so the propaganda merchants all of a sudden appear. He’s waging a war on the church at this point so up pops a left leaning “christian” to declare that Obama’s the most christian president ever…ever. Let’s not mince words here. Obama spent twenty years with a race baiter who masquerades as a pastor. To insult us further, Obama wants us to believe in that twenty years he didn‘t hear any of Uncle Jerry Wright’s (his “sounding board for his conscience”) incindiary sermons against Israel and the U.S. Obama joined this church because a black chicago politician needed to, it was politically advantageous to do so. Obama is an agnostic at best, but most likely an atheist. His words and staged photo ops are empty. His actions have proven that no matter what he says, he’s no christian.

But it should also include — it should also include other, you know, information about contraception because, look, I’ve got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. (Let me repeat that line again for you TEXASBETA…“PUNISHED WITH A BABY”)…I don’t want them punished with an STD at the age of 16. You know, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.”

HOBBS57. Please dont’ insult our intelligence. Obama USES Christianity. He’s schooled in the Chicago machine of politics where a black politician HAD TO belong to a “church” like Jerry Wright’s in order to have “credibility” with the black community there. Obama says whatever’s expedient for him to say to any audience, hence we get “America’s one of the biggest muslim nations in the world” to a supposed Muslim audience in Turkey. To further illustrate Obama’s duplicitious use of faith..let’s look at one of his appointees to his “Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships”…Rabbi David Sapperstein. Sapperstein is the chairman of the Public Religion Research Institute. This “institute” (the institute touts the liberal canard..“social justice”) recently released a “poll” citing that most Catholics want Obamacare’s “free” contreceptives, sterilants and abortion pills”. This poll being issued by Media Matters to “prove” Obama‘s assault on religion isn’t an assault on religion. Sapperstein is also on the board of People for the American Way. And lo and behold…People for the American Way is funded by George Soros and the Tides Foundation. Please…stop insulting us by even attempting to suggest Obama is a Christian. Obama is an agnostic at best, an atheist most likely. Obama uses religion to manipulate votes for himself and manipulate public perception of him.

First of all, one’s Christian faith must dictate how he views politics otherwise he has not yielded to the sovereignty of God.

Secondly, liberals love to “talk” about God and to misquote God’s words to justify abusing governmental authority but they do not allow God to have any role in how they think or behave.

Therefore, liberal theology is nothing more than secular humanism in religious terms. Obama says he’s a Christian, but he speaks and acts like a secular humanist. He supports abortion, which God abhors. He abuses his authority as the chief executive of the nation, which God detests. He undermines God’s design in marriage. He uses different weights and measures and does not deal with the people in equality.

God’s Word does not forbid us from making judgments. It warns against making hypocritical judgments. In fact, God encourages us to make righteous judgments and to estimate a person by the fruit of their character.

Obama’s eternal salvation is not a judgment I am called to make. But if “Christian” means “little Christ,” the fruit of Obama’s character demonstrates that he wants to be nothing like Jesus.

I agree. He can say he’s a Christian all day long and even use biblical references to argue his point, but it doesn’t make it so.

Jesus never made a case for forcible redistribution of wealth and anyone who thinks so is simply pulling a verse out of the bible and inventing a theology to match it.

This method can be used to pull Rev. 8:1 out of the bible and despite the numnerous verses that say otherwise, you could use it to make a case that there are no women in heaven. How? Rev 8:1(b)… “there was silence in heaven for half an hour.” Since women are incapable of 30 minutes of silence, we can induce that women aren’t in Heaven.

The above is, of course, a joke (and a pretty poor one at that), but it illustrates what’s called inductive Bible study. Ninety percent of the time, someone pulling one verse out of the pretext, subtext, and context of the Bible and then spouting it to make a case for his argument, it leads to (at best) flawed doctrine but more often flat out heresy.

I’m with HOVA on this one. Any belief system that is a byproduct of fear (of Hell or some other Divine retribution) is flawed. That goes for secular systems too. Allthough believers like to point to North Korea as the finest example of atheism’s evil and destructive nature, it functions in the exact same way as most organized religions. There is an all-knowing, all powerful leader (Kim Jong Il or God) whom we should fear and revere on a daily basis with chants and prayers. He is the father of all things, has supernatural powers, he can bend the laws of nature at will and straying from his chosen path results in death (or eternal damnation). Also, all morality comes from Him and unbelievers should be treated as misguided souls in need of reeducation.

So, of the two comments against me, one is just a baseless dismissal without anything to back up its claims and the other is trying to examine me psychologically and concluding that I lacked a positive role model (who, in this case, is one who is exclusively male and forces his theological views onto his offspring, despite evidence going against his claims) and that I am insecure in my masculinity for some reason. No evidence, no argument, no truth.

@Hova: Nice to insinuate that I am speaking ‘against’ any masculinity you may or may not have. I don’t believe that anything in my post even remotely reflected such a sentiment. Please read them again, and give yourself a chance to at least digest what I wrote, instead of regurgitating it back up half-chewed. Fear of God isn’t fear. It’s awe. It‘s where the word ’Awesome’ comes from. Or ‘Aweful’(awful is the current spelling). Christians aren’t afraid of God. People that don’t have faith are afraid of God… or afraid of the concept of God.

      @Kadams(el?)

      Here, let me quote you:

“So if you’re a happy person, let me be the first to say you’re gay. Oh, you’re not?”

First of all, why would sexual orientation even matter in this conversation? I understand that it is an innuendo, but it is poorly veiled. Secondly, since you are so caught up in archetypes and the grooming of such into children, isn’t the archetype of a gay male a man that acts more like a woman? You even put in a hypothetical straw man to instantly dismiss your claims.

With regards to your spiel about how “fear” doesn’t mean “fear” (I can’t believe I am having this conversation), do you have any evidence that “fear” doesn’t mean “fear”? You could argue that I am looking at the situation out of context, but context has to be consistent in order to matter (“fear” has to mean the definition you are arguing in every instance of the word in the Bible; if it used only in reference to God, then there is no reason to believe it means anything other than the negative feeling regarding threats). So, where is the evidence?

Am I afraid of God? No, I’m not afraid of things that have yet to be obvious in the act of existing. However, if the Biblical God that orders armies to slaughter families and rape women, that orders women to be held accountable of rape if they aren’t loud enough, and allows a dimension such as Hell to even exist exists, then yes, put me in the afraid group along with the other dissenters of immorality.

@Hova. Where did anyone’s question of sexuality come into play? Oh, my apologies that I grew up in a time when gay meant happy, and women still named their daughters Gay. Where do you get anything sexual from my comment? Boy, aren’t we fishing in a dry creek with no bait. Keep trying though. The ‘innuendo’, which you incorrectly interpreted as such, was actually an example on how the meanings of words change over time. Like fear.

Amusing though, watching the path your thought took. And typical, as the left only seems to concern themselves with race and/or sex.

You are right. I obviously devoted my entire rant to that misleading statement (despite the fact that it took up only the introductory paragraph). BTW, when do you plan on discussing the other 2 paragraphs of my comment? I mean, with all of your knowledge, you could’ve dismantled the main points of my comment, but you held back. Why, I ask, Virgin ******? Whoa, are you offended by me calling you a Virgin ******? What, do you not remember a time, a better time, when ****** used to mean nothing more than a bundle of sticks meant for kindling? It is apt, wouldn’t you say, for a person who is Hellbound (you know, that fiery place?) were it not for the Grace of God to be called a ******? And, since you already have been Blessed, it is doubly apt to call you a Virgin ******, one who is saved from ever touching those torturous flames. So, what knowledge do you bring to knock down my main claims, Virgin ******.

TL;DR Are you ready to stop playing childish semantics (sem-antics! Get it?) and actually get down to arguing my claims actually regarding the subject of theology and religion?

Those who do not choose to make a choice (especially in this case NOT making a choice IS making a choice) or choose NOT to accept the gift of salvatrion are NOT the elect. There are even those who knowingly choose the other side – the devils side.

      1 Timothy 4 tells you:
      1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
      2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

      And
      2 Corinthians says:
14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

      And Matthew 7 says:
15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Look at the fruit. Is what they are ‘preaching’ edifying to the body of Christ? No. Evil fruit, therefore evil men.

I don’t believe any of them were products of the public education system. It’s okay to be mad, not every parent loves their child enough to yank them out of the public screwl system. “The world is reaching a cross-roads, a dangerous turning point regarding the threat of Islamofascism. According to the Qur’an, Islam has always had world domination as it’s ultimate goal, but now it’s sights are firmly fixed on America. Muslim groups and organizations have infiltrated our culture, seeking to establish Sharia (Islamic Law) across our great nation. With the election of Barack Hussein Obama as President, our political leadership has installed Muslims in powerful and key positions across the federal government. In this thought-provoking seminar, Usama draws upon current events in the news to demonstrate how quickly we are moving towards “one nation under Islam.” His message is clear: America, now is the time to choose, to choose Freedom, or to unknowingly choose to Surrender to Islam.”

    ROTFLMAFAO!

AND, I always thought the pic of him and his “Presidential aura/halo” was pretty blasphemous.

But again…. ROTFLMFAO… is pretty appropriate given the topic.

I also think it funny that this professor is from “Messiah” College… he must have been listening VERY closely to Obama when he said this…

“… a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany … and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama” – Barack Obama Lebanon, New Hampshire. January 7, 2008.

Or when Newsweek said that “Obama was standing over the country, above the world. He’s sort of GOD.”

Either the Professor was paid enormously or he has been fooled by the devil! If he were a Christian, Tell us then why did Obama snub his nose at day of prayer. Why is he letting Christians be trod upon, why does he stand up for Muslims, but not Christians? If he is a Christian then I am the Pope. Mr. Professor, if he is a Christian then why is he dividing the country? Thats not somethiing Jesus would do is it! Why does he put down the Tea Party who is the Christian movement of America as far as I am concerned? And why does he uplift the OWS.. clearly moved by Satan? Really, this guy needs a new job.. he is brainwashing his students! God help us!

President Obama has consistently reiterated in interviews and speeches that he’s a Christian.

I sez in my best Texan/Shaksperian Accent “Me thinks thou do protest to much”. ok, ok I paraphrased…
