Mexican Baseball Players Duck for Cover as Gun Battle Erupts Between Police and Gunmen

Gunfire Interrupts Mexican League Baseball Game in Saltillo

A baseball game in the Mexican city of Saltillo was sent into a tailspin Tuesday after a gun battle between police and four gunmen erupted near the ballpark. The question being asked now is: Were police battling members of a drug cartel?

Players from the Triple-A level Saltillo Saraperos and the youth team they were playing against scrambled to take cover wherever they could as police killed three of the gunmen and wounded another.

According to AP, local media reported there were no injuries among the players or fans, but photos revealed what appeared to be bullet holes in the team’s bus.

Sergio Sisbeles, the security spokesman for Coahuila, said the bullets started flying after gunmen opened fire on a state police.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the suspects are involved in one the country’s notorious drug cartels. AP does add, however, that cartels are active in the area.
