SAN ANTONIO (The Blaze/AP) – Texas authorities said suspected drug runners in Mexico began shooting at U.S. law enforcement agents from across the Rio Grande on Thursday, forcing the U.S. officers to return fire and injuring at least three of the suspects on the other side of the border.
Few details about the early morning shootout in Hidalgo County were immediately available. The shootout began after U.S. agents patrolling in boats tried to seize a drug load on the Rio Grande, Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said.
However, local paper The Monitor has pieced together some information:
As they [police] arrived, people from the Mexican side began throwing rocks that struck two game wardens, Cox said. The two game wardens were later taken to a local hospital for treatment and subsequently released.
“At that point the officers were in fear for their lives and the shooting began soon after,” he said. “Our wardens did fire shots to defend themselves.”
DPS confirmed at least three were injured as a result, but officials did not disclose how many officers discharged their weapons.
Sources with direct knowledge of the case from both U.S. and Mexico stated that about 20 individuals were moving a load of narcotics back to Mexico in an apparent effort to elude capture. In addition to the rocks, the suspects on the Mexican side fired about six shots presumably from pistols. Upon hearing the shots, U.S. authorities opened fire as well.
Mange said she could not disclose whether any U.S. officers were struck or injured. She said the agents came under “heavy fire” but would not say how long the ensuing shootout lasted.
However, the “heavy fire” charge is now in dispute.
The Monitor explains that sources now say that authorities faced only six shots from the drug runners that were fired from pistols:
New information obtained from several sources raises questions regarding the claims made by the Texas Department of Public Safety regarding a shootout where U.S. authorities near the Rio Grande came under “heavy fire” Thursday.
Two independent sources from both the U.S. and Mexico said that only six shots from the Mexican side were heard. The rounds hit the ground near the U.S. authorities, raising the question that the incident might not have been that different from any other police-related shooting in the United States.
DPS officials confirmed that the incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m., but wouldn’t disclose the location; other sources placed it south of Abram at 6:23 a.m.
Authorities said Mexican officials were notified about two “drug-laden” boats that were abandoned after the shootout.
U.S. Border Patrol referred questions to the DPS, which used its elite team of Texas Rangers Recon agents in the attempted drug seizure.
It is not the first time shots have been exchanged along the Texas-Mexico border. Since January of last year, DPS has tracked at least a dozen incidents of shots being fired from Mexico and into Texas, with U.S. officers shooting back in some cases.
No U.S. authorities have been reported hurt in those cases.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 10:24amWhen the drug cartels have no fear of repercussions for firing at our federal agents from the Mexico riverbanks and are actively building makeshift armored vehicles and deploying them – we are clearly AT WAR. Bring our helicopter GUNSHIPS to the border and start taking these cartels out! The problem has become that severe and the time is now to finally do something about it.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 10:13amThe Media again paints our security as second place to invaders desires, I know maybe we should allow the smugglers in with all there narcotics, and then we should let them buy weapons and see if we can track them so that we can locate more persons to allow over our boarder with more drugs and let them also buy weapons to take back to Mexico. This is the best-est idea in the world we can catch a bunch of bad guys. Oh wait didn’t our DOJ just do this and what happened oh yeah the weapons have been used against us, who could have seen that happening? It is so hard to understand we gave them weapons, we gave them free access to our nation we give them money and electricity, we supply them with jobs in Mexico and USA and yet, they don’t like us, :’( not fair not hope and change boo hoo boo hoo boo hoo. Dumb Azz’s in Washington do not get it. Open boarders people don’t get it, it is a direct violation of the vow taken by not only Obama but Eric Holder as well. Yet it is not noted at all on the Nightly News, why because they (the media/government complex) knows that those of us who like our nation and our sovereignty would call to arms if they knew more. I say put tanks and landmines all along the boarder, if kids try crossing and die well don’t trespass. same with every single person that tries crossing and invading our Nation.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 10:13amThe US constitution allows the citizens to form a militia to protect our country. If the Obama administration cannot get the job done because they want to pander to the hispanic voters and liberals who depend on these drugs to fry their pea size brains even further, then the citizens need to do whatever is neccesary to protect our border, or families and our country. We also need to enforce the drug laws in this country and get the liberal drug users put behind bars because they are the demand that is causing the supply.

Report Post »Personally, IDGAF HOW MANY SHOTS WERE HEARD.
If you shoot at or try to harm ANY of our Border Patrol agents, police officers, hell even a MALL COP, with so much as a PEBBLE we should be fully in the right to return fire until either A) you, the threat, are eliminated or B) all clips are empty. Period.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 3:03pmSomone throwing rocks at me is getting a 40 back. Rocks kill, Islam doesn’t do a whole lot of electrocutions do they? They stone people to death.
Report Post »Which brings up an other point. All of you against the death penalty they do it in the street with a sword! No costly appeals. Protest that over there

Yes, I’m saying open fire on them first. If someone throws a rock, you shoot him. If he shoots at you with a pistol, you go full-auto on him. Whatever force is thrown at us, we meet it x10 in return.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 3:50pmI live here, and this is nothing really new. The new part was the actual exchange of fire.
Usually the police chase ends in seizing thousands of pounds of marijuana or kilos of cocaine. The bad guys usually disappear into the brush after crashing the vehicle they stole in order to make a drug run. Because they drive like madmen, the police end up w/a wreck and unable to pursue the banditos.
We have some children in La Joya ISD who are lookouts for the cartels and tell their teachers abt it.
The cartels force ranchers to look the other way as they traverse their lands — or die if the rancher reports it. These are the ranchers and farmers that put veggies on your table in the winter, grow sugar cane for your coffee and tea, and produce the steak and fajitas for your BBQ.
Shut the damn porous border, Madam Secretary. Know that is it NOT the most secure it’s ever been down here. It was one thing when men and women floated across on inner tubes for jobs, but now it’s abt drugs and systemic violence. It’s not abt apple pickers any more.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 4:44pmWhat in the world has Rick Perry done or hasn’t done that could have prevented this? When the game wardens were shot at they returned fire. Are you trying to say that they were only armed with rubber bullets? Did they only have 1 bullet apiece? Please explain your statement because as stands it makes no sense. I can see perhaps complaining about the Federal Government but to complain about the State Government doesn’t make sense.

@spankdamonkey
So are you saying open fire on them first? The borders arent safe because of the sorry ass politicians in washington, wake up, moron……I live in Texas, if it were up to me, i’d shoot every last one that invaded Texas and the U.S. as soon as they hit our soil…….
I love the way this guy thinks…. If we pile a few thousand illegals along the border to rot in the dessert sun I think they will get the message… They are a leach on the back of our country.. If your not willing to do what ever is necessary to save this country YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM… Bullets are far cheaper than legislation… Its good practice too :)

Posted on June 11, 2011 at 7:07amOh… But I thought our southern border was secure?
Many of our members of Congress are also members of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and therefore have no desire to secure our borders as they’re quietly leading us towards a new North American Union for the “free flow of goods, services and people”…
Globalization at all costs…
