During a horrific, drug-fueled ritual, a Mexico mother allegedly gouged her 5-year-old son’s eyes out using only her fingers because she thought it would “save the world.”

The eyeless boy, who has been identified only as Fernando, was taken to a Mexico City hospital after police found him wrapped in his mother’s arms in a suburb of Nezahualcoyotl on Thursday – mutilated and traumatized.

Thankfully, Fernando is expected to live through the frightening ordeal, but he has been left completely blind.

Authorities have not revealed whether the ritual was linked to any religious beliefs. However, prior to the incident the mother, identified as Maria del Carmen Rios, 28, and a group of adults – many of them relatives – had reportedly been at the home fasting and reciting a prayer because “the world was going to end,” Nezahualcoyotl assistant police Chief Samuel Cuevas Monroy told the Associated Press.

A video posted on The Guardian‘s website features a medic who argues that Fernando’s eyes were actually removed with a spoon and that a group was taking part in a “satanic” ritual, a statement which slightly differs with other news reports:

The mother had apparently become incoherent and said to the group, “Let’s kill him, to get the devil out of him.” Shortly after, Fernando’s 22-year-old aunt held him down while his mother hand-removed his eyes from their sockets.

She also encouraged others to help mutilate her son to “prevent an earthquake and save the world,” the chief prosecutor for Mexico state told the AP.

Authorities said that the group of adults had been taking unspecified drugs. The mother and seven others are being held while charges are pending.

      It is true that even without religion, people would find plenty of excuses to act in a barbaric and irrational way, but MUST we give them YET ONE MORE reason to do so with religion?

      When you accept that prima facie that some beliefs are just TRUE, regardless of EVIDENCE, when you forget what makes you KNOW something to be true, then the floodgates are open to believing any action, no matter how depraved and contradictory to the most basic applications of reason it may be, to be justified by these unassailable beliefs.

      Do not be surprised that an ideology, any ideology, which asks of its followers not to think before believing, should produce unthinking people. And when people do not think, they act upon their baser drives, regressing into the beast from which they have come, and there is no bounds to the depths of depravity to which they might sink when they abdicate their human birthright to THINK.

      Those willing to BELIEVE uncritically, will ACT uncritically. They are like ships lost at sea without a rudder, their course plotted not through their own power, but by the forces of the ideas of of others like the wind which spins about the rudderless ship aimlessly.

    There was that story of someone that had fetuses wrapped in gold foil. Once the ritual that they where used for did not work they need even more and using a 5 year old would not be out of the realm. The whole human sacrifice was done to help. Being a albino born in Africa is a death sentence from birth as even the bones of albino are used for good luck and rituals.

      Holyghostbuster you know not what you speak of. According to you I assume that there is no God. That leaves mankind as the authority on morality. Thats right the same mankind that gouges the eyes out of 5 year old children. Without a higher morality guiding us then anything we do is OK so long as we deem it so. If this lady truly was a Christian acting on blind faith then she would have recognized that under the new covenant (crucifiction) blood sacrifice is no longer allowed.

      You are correct, that the morality of man is capable of reaching the depths of utter depravity–but so to is it capable of reaching the heights of nobility. Without proof that the particular morality you claim (and you, like every religion, are in the minority on this claim) to be “God’s” is in fact of divine authorship, we can only assume (and have many reasons besides to believe) that it is, like every other moral code that has ever existed, a product of humans. The fact of the matter is that there ISN’T a self-evident “higher standard” of morality to appeal to–if there WERE then there wouldn’t BE any controversy, there wouldn’t BE any debate, and the “one true religion” would be OBVIOUS…but it isn’t, OBVIOUSLY, and that is why there IS debate in the first place.

      The problem, then, isn’t that humans fail–humans will ALWAYS fail, and there isn’t any self-evidently INFALLIBLE authority on any subject, including morality. In fact, it is good that we CAN fail and can recognize failures as such, for without this ability, we could never IMPROVE. What IS the problem is when we THINK we have all the answers, and believe that we CAN stop THINKING about morality–morality is not a state of being, rather it is an action, a skill, and one that like any other requires practice and dedication to have any hope of improvement.     I think what is worse are the gang members that are here in the USA from Mexico! Things are not going to get any better as the economy tanks! This lady is definitely sick in the head, while I can imagine how many more are like her!

    As the colleges begin to shut down because of the lack of government funding and taxes rise up! I’m sure we will see more like this coming out of the woodwork and even more violent crimes!

    There are so many programs we need to cut and get this over with! I‘m sick of supporting others with my tax paying dollars who really don’t contribute anything towards society!

    Send them all home! Clean up our neighborhoods and make the lazy work for something in life!

    Before we cast too many stones “across the line,” we’re not looking too morally substantial here in the States right now. Believe me, the immigrants need to be shipped home, but grotesque domestic rituals like this happen here as well. My concern is that people are being brainwashed (here and overseas) into thinking that 2012 is the end of life as we know it. They will wake up next year as tortured souls with nothing in their hands…..
    One last thing. Is it me or has this been the longest 3.5 years of our lives? Can we please get BO out of office?
