Miami-Dade Mayoral Candidate Proposes a Stripper Tax

There is a recall election slated for March 15th in Miami-Dade County, the results of which will determine the future of current county mayor Carlos Alvarez.  Should the mayor find himself recalled, a new election just might launch a very different career for Luther Campbell, the former frontman of the controversial rap group 2 Live Crew.  Campbell, who has also answered to the names “Luke Skyywalker” and “Uncle Luke” claims to have legitimate reasons for running as well as the business acumen to handle the troubled county.

Miami Dade Mayoral Candidate Proposes a Stripper Tax

Perhaps most surprising in the news of Mr. Campbell’s candidacy it that he has some fairly well-formed positions on topics like the budget;

“I’ll review the county budget with a fine-toothed comb. When I ran my record company, every year we would first go over what was making revenue for us and beef that side up. Then we would cut the areas where we were not generating revenue. The first place we looked was payroll. I’ll do the same with the county budget.”

It should be noted that Campbell is addressing a vital issue here as the spark that inspired this recall referendum was the county’s recent tax increase levied as the board also granted themselves substantial raises.

And then he steps into the fringes and introduces a plank in his platform that will forever be known as “the stripper tax.”

“Even though all my stripper friends are gonna be mad at me, I think we can stimulate the economy with a tax on strippers. They make all this money and don’t pay taxes. I’d take that cash and put it into a fund where it supports youth athletics for girls like cheerleading or softball. Or it can go to help pay for existing little girls programs that are struggling to get government assistance.”

The stripper tax is not exactly beating swords into plowshares, but taxing exotic dancers to pay for more programs for young girls certainly qualifies as making lemonade from lemons.

    We can just put tax agents in all strip clubs and have them take their cut directly from the G-string!

    I have actually been fond of this guy for a while now. I remember his music well, but he has changed his life. He had been involved in lots of beneficial programs for the youth. Cities have similar taxes all the time. They are known as sin taxes. It curbs bad behavior and makes the city some money. Does anybody know how much money this State makes from Casinos? Its a lot. Since these girls are doing it anyway and making lots of money (undeserved) we should tax them. It will help them and help us.

      An hourly tax with these girls is the way to go. Tax them for every hour they are there in a week. I am strongly against most taxes, but this tax is a good one. Give the man some credit. He has come along way from how he used to be.

      P.S. This is not the same as legalizing something just to tax it. That would be ridiculous. This is an activity that is already legal, generates a lot of money (undesirably), and could help curb immoral behavior.

    I may move to Miami and vote for this guy. he’s spot on. There needs to be a whore tax too. legalize it, health ise it, tax it. we’ll get rid of the “crime”, the health issues like STD’s, and we’ll collect the money from the business as well.

    For all you Christian folks – this “problem” has been with us forever – let’s deal realistically with it.

    If we charge Sean Hannity $1 everytime he says the word literally, uses the phrase “etc. etc”. or uses the phrase “in other words” we could go a long way to balancing the budget. Then we could charge a quarter for the use of the word “awesome” and the word “like” amongst teenagers, another gazillion dollars in revenue.

      Seriously, this guy doesn‘t know what he’s talking about. “They make all this money and don’t pay taxes. “No one would do that job if it wasn’t for “all this money,” and everyone who works for tips is required to report that as income to the IRS. It’s not their fault that Florida has no state income tax.

      First of all, in my experience, most people who work for “cash tips” don’t report those tips to the IRS.

      Second, there is a much better way to solve this problem. Eliminate the income tax and the IRS, and simply make a nationwide sales tax. A nationwide sales tax would tax everyone: Strippers, servers, valets, drug dealers… EVERYONE.
