Miami-Dade Police Department: Trayvon Martin Not Tied to Any Reported Jewelry Thefts

SANFORD, Fla. (AP/The Blaze) — Women‘s jewelry and a watch found in Trayvon Martin’s school backpack last fall could not be tied to any reported thefts, the Miami-Dade Police Department said Tuesday.

The Miami Herald in its Tuesday editions reported that it had obtained a Miami-Dade Schools Police Department report that showed the slain teenager was suspended in October for writing obscene graffiti on a door at his high school. During a search of his backpack, the report said, campus security officers found 12 pieces of women’s jewelry, a watch and a screwdriver that they felt could be used as a burglary tool.

Martin’s fatal Feb. 26 shooting in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman has caused a national firestorm. His family and people at rallies all over the country have demanded the arrest of Zimmerman who says he shot the unarmed 17-year-old in self-defense. Martin was black and Zimmerman’s father is white and his mother, Hispanic. Martin’s family and their supporters believe race played a part in the decision not to charge Zimmerman.

The Herald reported that when campus security confronted Martin with the jewelry, he told them that a friend had given it to him, but he wouldn’t give a name. The report said the jewelry was confiscated and a photo of it was sent to Miami-Dade Police burglary detectives. Miami-Dade school officials declined Tuesday to confirm the report when contacted by The Associated Press, citing federal privacy laws regarding students.

Miami-Dade Police confirmed that it had been asked by school police to help identify the property taken from Martin’s backpack. It notified school police that the jewelry did not match any that had been reported stolen.

Martin had previously been suspended for excessive absences and tardiness and, at the time of his death, was serving a 10-day suspension after school officials found an empty plastic bag with marijuana traces in his backpack.

His parents and their lawyer, Benjamin Crump, have said such reports are irrelevant to the shooting and part of an attempt to demonize Martin. Crump did not return calls to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, black Democratic members of the Florida Legislature are demanding that a special session be called to consider whether to repeal the state’s seven-year-old “Stand Your Ground” law, which eliminated a person’s duty to retreat when threatened with seriously bodily harm or death.

Sanford police have cited the law as the reason Zimmerman wasn’t arrested after the shooting. They are also demanding that a task force appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to examine the shooting and any changes needed to state law begin work immediately instead of waiting for the police investigation to conclude.

“Whether self-defense was a legitimate factor, the law remains intact — with all the same components still in place for more killings and additional claims of self-defense, warranted or not,” state Sen. Chris Smith wrote in a statement to the governor. “…I’m sure you will agree that delaying the work of the task force — possibly up to one year or longer — suits no purpose other than to allow more tragedies to unfold.”

But Scott and other Republicans have insisted that the state should wait until ongoing police investigations are completed.

Republican Rep. Dennis Baxley, one of the sponsors of the law, said that “when things have cooled off a little bit I think it’s worthy to sit down and say is there legislation that is needed.”

In Sanford Tuesday, the city manager said that hiring an outsider to run the police department is a priority to help cool tensions caused by Martin’s death and the investigation.

Manager Norton Bonaparte said officials were working with the nonprofit group Police Executive Research Forum to identify potential candidates.

Police Chief Bill Lee temporarily stepped down after outrage erupted over the police department’s handling of the shooting.

Darren Scott, a 23-year veteran of the Sanford Police Department, was named acting chief. Lee is still employed with the department and receiving his salary.

At a news conference Tuesday, Bonaparte and Scott refused to answer any questions about an information leak to the media. The leak contained an account by Zimmerman that said Martin was the aggressor in a fight leading up to the shooting. Officials have said they will investigate where the leak came from.

“We have a legal system in place and we ask that people let it take its course,” Darren Scott said. “I am concerned with everyone’s concerns, but I will not comment on the investigation.”

OK this is another fact I don’t get. Trayvons girlfriend was on the phone with him when he got into the scuffle which we now know he was beating in zimmermans head in and the phone went dead.

    So 1. why didn’t she call 911
    2. Why did his body sit in the morgue for 3 days without his girlfriend wondering where he was, calling his parents to find out if they had heard from him
    3. including the girlfriend of his dads where he was suposed to be staying, hey where is Trayvon after 3 days
    4, his bloody mother

NO one in his family went looking for him. maybe he just took off for days on his own alot. who knows

Because his parents were not the parents of the year. As to the girlfriend I am betting she wasn‘t on the phone with him as he was beating Zimmerman or she knew he was doing something wrong and didn’t want to get him in more trouble. What really bothers me at this point is most of the media is portraying Martin as this sweet faced kid and Zimmerman as a guy in jail orange. Zimmerman may be boneheaded for following the kid but he was doing what he thought was right. There is much the mainstream media has not said on this case because it would hurt their agenda.

Yes, the facts need to come out. The media is making their own fantasy story out of this to project the image and storyline to get the African American community all inspired to vote for obama this next election…..or to reaffirm their own wierd victim scenerio.
A male‘s backback filled with women’s jewelry and a screwdriver?….and a plastic bag? This is painting a different picture than one of the innocent kid in the photo released by parents and media.
While facts are not in yet………..people are forming opinions …………based on scenarios put forth by the media and race baiting activists……….but based on the facts of the incident…..or facts on the real characters of the individuals?
Who has a backpack of jewelry and a screwdriver?
Who is in a gated community that they do not live in, just casually walking through because why?…..wearing a hoodie….with many recent burglaries matching same description of burglars………and beating someone’s head against the concrete…….and because they are black get a pass on doing that and are treated like a victim? Trayvon is treated like a victim because of showbiz propaganda coverage and not because of the facts. The facts are not even completely out yet.
His mommy can try to sell hoodies but where was she? His character will be brought into this and rightfully so if he was attacking and slamming someone’s head onto the concrete. If mommie dearest doesn’t like it then she will just have to dea

There were over 40 people shot in a two day period in Chicago last weekend, including a 1 year old girl. This kid’s own person issues have no relation to the facts of this case, but it DOES strongly question the selective outrage being exhibited by the black community and media over this particular case.

The black community~ you can not judge them by statistical data on them as a group or you are a racist which has a connotation to the term…………yet as a community or a group of people the bigger picture is not good. They are conditioned to think of themselves as victims (through their black liberation churches and the media) yet as a group if the behavior is judged by racial grouping they do not do so well…….but dare we talk about that! We cannot. It is hidden. Those facts are hidden behind what is allowed to talk about.
The black community will eventually have to be self reliant because they won’t get a pass based on race forever. Yes, there is good and bad in every group but as long as everyone is grouping people by race there needs to be some honesty in the coverage. Political correctness will eventually equalize out to what is honest but it is far from there yet. The African American community is getting the free pass or is being not analyzed as a group because of race and because it is politically incorrect in this time in history. How long before they are judged on their behavior and not given a pass because many, many years ago they were mistreated. They are no longer victims because of race….no slaves in this generation….but they have been propagandized into victims. The racial free pass won’t last forever. The race card can’t be flipped forever to excuse whatever the behavior is. Eventually they will have to own up to the statisti

This, clearly, is how the democrats whip up hatred for whites and support for Obama in the black community. They care little for justice. The care little for the rights of an individual. They care nothing for racial harmony. They care only to solidify the support of the black community; support that has been falling, for Obama in time for the November election.

Funny how they are seeking Justice that Martins family get his Womans Jewelry back ?? I mean, it was his, or his friends, where is the justice demanding that the cops return this womans jewelery to Martin ?? I mean it wasn’t stolen, as they claim, so it should be returned right ?? I mean, maybe Martin was just buying up Womans Gold Jewelry so he could get the rest of his teeth “ Grill” done, right ? Geez, these cop’s are such racist. Then MArtin gets suspended because he has a baggie and a pipe with MJ remnants, and he gets suspended for drugs. How do they know that he was doing drugs. Good thing we have O’Donnel out there making sure people know he was only“suspected” of using MJ. The MJ and pipe probably belonged to the same friend who‘s woman’s jewelry and screwdriver he was holding. I mean, I carry screw drivers with me all the time. And MJ pipe, and baggie with seeds and stems, and especially at least a dozen pieces of womans jewelry at all times. You never know when you may find a girlfriend, or two , or three in a day. Reading his tweets, it seems his intentions were to get with every girl he met, so this makes sense. OH yeah, but he spoke of getting high and “blunts” as well n his tweets, but like Obama’s son would have, if he had one, and Obama‘s Mom wasn’t white, because this obviously makes a difference now, he probably inhaled just like Obama did.

This liberal media is out of control, seriously.

Where‘s the Blaze story on Trayvon’s mother trademarking her sons name in order to make a buck?

That Black-on-White beating in cleveland was an ugly robbery by a gang of thugs. After beating up that kid, they robbed another couple, and broke into a home. All three were juveniles, 2 were 17, 1 was 14. A real statement about that part of Cleveland.

The police were on the case, and made the arrests within a month, about the same time it took MSNBC to be interviewing the kid’s mom demanding a federal investigation in the FL case. The 3 were held, with one tried as an adult and the other 2 as juveniles. The elder took a plea and got only 2 years in jail.

I think that the judicial system, plea system blows, but that has nothing to do with how the police handled the case. Certainly all 3 deserved the arrest they got, and more if there were actually “20 kids” involved as many initially reported. Both 17 yr olds should have been tried, unless they were obvious leader / followers. Certainly that crime spree deserved more that 2 years in jail + some time in Juvie between the 3 of them! That particular area was terrible for youth on youth crime black-on-black, black-on-white, +??? I didn‘t do a lot of research but it doesn’t seem anything like a gated community in suburban Orlando.

Nobody will say Zimmerman is a thug, but we bring up stuff like Cleveland. That bugs the left. If Zimmerman is arrested, and takes a plea with short jail time (10 yrs?) there may still be yelling. The kid in Cleve was not shot and killed.

“Stand your ground” ended the legal requirement to attempt a safe exit, if available. Consequently, Zimmerman was free to pursue on foot. Before “stand your ground” he would have legally been required to wait for police instead of entering the kid’s personal space”

That still seems to be the two main issues on the other side. (1) why did zimmerman chase after him, instead of just waiting for the cops already on their way? If he had stayed in his car, and kept a safe distance, he could have informed the arriving police of the kid’s whereabouts without altercation. (2) What did the police do in the hours and days after the shooting? Why was the gun returned to Zimmerman without significant investigation? How was his identity not known? If somebody had gone door-to-door in the neighborhood, they should have ended up talking to the father.

Those are the 2 questions, but lots of hot-heads on their side use incendiary language. Of course, on our side there is a lot of folks blaming the Prez, the DOJ, the Media, etc with language that upsets their side as well.

So why is Martin’s family upset about the “leak” of information about Martin’s past behavior when they were obviously the source of his old. childhood photo ? The fact that a rush to judgement and a Million Man March type thing planned to intimidate the police over Zimmerman also seems like a huge “ leak” of prejudicial feelings before any real facts were released. This is another well-planned, orchestrated Democrat mess. Change the Florida law ? Stir up racial unrest ? Get “ justice” for their son ? A parent’s sorrow hijacked by political opportunists ?

Once again politicians on the Democrat side goes off the deep end because of one person. This investigation is still ongoing, however, knowing Democrat regardless of the findings they will again push to repeal this law.

What the hell does it mean when you find 12 pieces of women‘s jewelry in someone’s backpack other than theft? You may not have had a reported theft as the jewelry may not be worth reporting. Costume jewelry isn’t the type of jewelry you file a police report. If Trayvon didn‘t steal the jewelry couldn’t you file “receipt of stolen goods”. The more that comes out about this kid it definitely shows him in a different light. He isn’t the little “angel” his mom is making him out to be. Of course, I never thought he was. Some parents are not willing to face the music about their own children.

Sharpton and Jackson as well as the Black Panthers should all be arrested for “intent to incite a riot”.

Spike Lee, well I hope the women who owns the address he listed as George Zimmerman’s sues the pants off him. 1. For reckless endangerment. 2. Intent to cause bodily harm. 3. Slander 4. Whatever else can be filed. He needs to be taught a lesson, a big one.

Another possibility was the jewelry had been stolen in a different county. There are 3 counties that border Dade and are 50 miles away or less. The boy was killed in Sanford which is about 250 miles away from Miami. He could have stolen the jewelry any where. It didn’t have to be close to Miami.

The MSM and the Martin‘s are cring that the right is trying to demonze Martin’s past. Well what do you think the MSM and the Martin‘s are doing to Zimmerman’s past!!!!!!!! If the kids past doesn‘t matter the Zimmerman’s past shouldn’t matter.

Also I am so tired of the MSM thinking that a young black teen could NEVER do anything wrong and when killed is Always the victom.

We do not have all the facts but from what I have heard I say that Zimmerman did think he mite have been in danger, I wish he hadn’t killed the kid but one does not think when ones life is in danger.

One more thing, at first I heard Mr. Martin comment that the cryes for help on the taps were NOT his son. Is he still saying that or has he changed his story? I am just wondering.

One more thing, Mrs. Martin said something that I think just set this whole thing into a race story; ‘They killed my son now they are trying to smear his name.’

I’m armed and am contacting the police.” This is mostly what we’re taught in concealed handgun class. Especially if the person is not on your own property. Especially since he was expliciitly told to stand down. However, I do not by any means believe that the liberal media nor the Black community are treating him fairly.

Vardaman, if no one has said it yet, let me be the first – Your are an idiot. Me thinks you trying to be intentionally racist to make others think you are a Glenn Beck supporter. Nice try, but as Andy Stern says, but we got your number, we also know where you live, we know who you are, so Shut UP!

      @angryconservative

“Stand your ground. Put your hands in the air. I’m armed and am contacting the police.”

Who has time to say all that, when a 6′ 3″ dude walks up to you and sucker-punches you?

Didn’t sucker punch. Zimmerman said Trayvin asked him
does he have a problem, Zimmerman said no, and started to
walk away, Trayvon said you do now and punched
him in face. Zimmerman shoulda said town watch, police
are on their way. Nobody diees then. @vanderwhatever, even
if ur a loon, I was wrong. Im a Christian and
I don’t talk that way. I’m sorry for acting tough and
      offering u out.

Well, let’s see, the jewelery wasn’t stolen, but the cops confiscated 12 pieces of womans jewelery and nobody came forward and claimed it as theirs. No, instead, they just let the cops take their jewelry that they legally owned. OK, Sure ….

I was reading through Martins tweets last night got through maybe 36 pages and was disgusted. The kid certainly disrespected women completely. There is multiple mention of drugs but I don’t suspect he was dealing or anything. At least according to the tweets.

It seems the black culture disrespects women in general. They expect the woman to hold down a steady job and raise the dozen kids while they be out don dare thng…what ever dat be.
