Michael Bloomberg: Youd Think That if a Congresswoman Got Shot in the Head it Would Change Congress Views on Gun Control

Meet the Press

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday the shooting of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords should have sparked a national dialogue about gun laws.

Bloomberg, a political independent and longtime advocate for gun control, made his comments on NBC’s “Meet the Press” hours before his gun control ad with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was scheduled to air during the Super Bowl.

“You’d think that if a congresswoman got shot in the head, that would have changed Congress’ views,” Bloomberg told NBC’s David Gregory, who asked why the issue of gun control has been “overtaken by the politics of indifference.”

Bloomberg continued, “I can tell you how to change it, just get Congress to come with me to the hospital when I’ve got tell somebody that their son or daughter, their spouse, their parent is not going to come home ever again. This past week, sadly, even though the murder rate in New York is so much lower than almost every big city, we still had a cop shot last week with a gun that somebody had even though the federal laws prohibited that person from having a gun.”

Calling on Congress to provide funding to ensure proper background checks and close loopholes to make sure current laws are enforced, claiming that since the 1960s, nearly 400,000 Americans have died in gun violence — more than the number of Americans who died during World War II.

“I don’t know who has to get killed for people to start saying ‘wait a second, this is enough,’” Bloomberg said.

Mayor Bloomberg, you are a pretty low human being to use Gabby Gifford’s injury to press your agenda. Jared Loughner could have done way more damage with his father’s truck than what he did with a weapon, and a citizen with a weapon could have limited the damage he did manage to cause. As for your own cowardice, if you stop playing the tyrant and the dictator and trying to ram your agenda down our throats, you have nothing to fear. Our side has self control.

The points that I find interesting are that both NYC and D.C. have some of the strictest, if not the strictest, gun laws in the nation. And the last time I checked, D.C. was the Murder Capital of the nation, with NYC not far behind. So gun laws don‘t amount to a hill of beans simply because criminals don’t obey the law. That’s why they are criminals.

Another issue is that guns are not the only murder weapons around. The first recorded murder happened LONG before the Chinese invented gun powder.

And finally, not to put too fine a point on it, Mayor Bloomberg, but I seem to remember a number of people did actually die in that Arizona shooting. Gabby Giffords was one of the lucky ones. Sixteen people ended up with gunshot wounds that day. Six of the victims died, among them John M. Roll, the chief judge for the United States District Court for Arizona, and a 9-year-old girl. I guess they don’t matter to you, but they certainly do to their families.

@BARRETTOC you are correct much of politics is economic. The loss of liberty comes in large part from agencies who are acting in an ideological activist manner. The most dangerous element is not WS, it is the faceless bureaucrat who can not be held accountable by voters. There is not so much a money issue here as a control issue.
You comment regarding Republicans the NRA, TP, etc shows you do not understand the conservative movement, you only incorrectly think you do. I would wager you only think you understand the progressive movement as well, but that us merely conjecture.

First, there is one and only one reason that President Obama has yet to establish an absolute dictatorship in the US. Privately owned guns. Do you think he would put up with Republican obstruction of every piece of legislation he has put forward, and every federal appointment he has offered if he weren’t scared of all those armed Tea Party members who are prepared to take back the government by violence, and establish a new Constitutional government, if it came to that? Hardly. Gun ownership is the one right you can credit to the fact that you are not enslaved and all your freedoms eliminated.

Second, the US has the lowest rate of gun violence in the World. Why? It’s obvious. All these armed God fearing citizens are holding. The bad guys know that. That by itself keeps the violence to a minimum. And when the bad guys act up? The good guys, the gun wielding protectors of Right whip out their weapons and shoot ‘em dead. That, my friend is why America is the safest country on Earth. If non-Arab people could only take their guns on planes, that would put and end to terrorism.

The more guns we have, the safer we all are. That’s why America is safe from violence, and if even more people owned even more guns, we could all not worry about locking our doors at night. Praise God. I personally believe in the Bible which teaches us to be prepared to dispatch evil doers on a moment’s notice. Luke 6:66.

Sometimes you have lucid moments and surprise me. I wonder why you’re so conflicted and confused all the other times. Here is one example:
“Republican obstruction of every piece of legislation he has put forward, and every federal appointment he has offered if he weren’t scared of all those armed Tea Party members who are prepared to take back the government by violence, and establish a new Constitutional government, if it came to that?”

      1) Republicans do not have a majority in the Senate so thereby cannot obstruct anything. On the contrary, Harry Reid is obstructing all things Republican. DUH! This is called “gridlock.”

      2) This gridlock is an intelligent design by our founders so that the Congress can slow down or stop the agenda of a wanna be dictator, like Obama.

Let’s just stop and look at the facts, first New York City has the MOST gun laws on the books of any city in the US. Now per the mayors own comments he stating that a cop was just shot and killed a short time ago, so short of taking away everybody’s guns how are more anti gun laws being put on the books going to make any difference in New York City! Ah yes, but that‘s just the point it’s not going to make any difference at all, so what the mayor and all the other anti gunners want is a complete and total ban on the private ownership of firearms in this country. Also in the story the mayor said that the guy that shot the cop was a felon so right there the felon was already breaking the law by having a gun so adding more laws on the books isn‘t going to make a difference to this guy BECAUSE HE’S ALREADY A FELON and can’t own a gun! The only people who are going to be effected by more gun laws are law abiding citizens of this country, and that’s the whole point of the mayors push for more gun control laws, to strip the citizens of this country of there gun rights, and then only the ruling elite like the mayor will have the means to protect themselves and tuff luck for all us “little people” because were not part of the ruling elite.

Last time I heard: More than 90,000 Americans are killed annually from medical mistakes, doctor error, hospital error, wrong medication, etc. Do we outlaw the medical community?
Many are killed in auto accidents. Do we outlaw autos?

Accidents happen. If someone can’t get a gun, they will use a knife or? It’s been proven that law abiding citizens, with guns, have a safer community.

The old saying: “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns” which pretty much sums it up along the border states where even our citizens are being killed by these outlaws.

I’ve seen women beaten to a pulp by boy friends or husbands, so what do we do about husbands? Outlaw them? Just look at what happens with sick people…..a gal in Florida killed her child and got off, scott free. Women drown their children; some are raped and snuffed out to get rid of the evidence, heard some man who burned his house with children in it, this morning, after killing his wife a year ago. Someone needs to stab that sycophant in the neck with an icepick and show him that guns are not the only “dangerous” objects in this world. I’m sick of the gun grabbers and controllers. I see them as an enemy on par with slave drivers and rapists. They should be attacked on every street corner for their attack on our sovereignty and their assumption that the individual has no rights. I bet if they had their way, all lions would be declawed and all mules would have their hind legs removed to avoid their dangerous kick.

Here is Jesus telling his disciples to have a weapon. That’s why Christians cling to their guns and bibles.

      Luke 22:35-38

      35) Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything”? “Nothing”, they answered. 36) He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag AND IF YOU DON’T HAVE A SWORD, SELL YOUR CLOAK AND BY ONE”. 37) It is written: And he was numbered with the transgressors. And I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching it’s fulfillment. 38) The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.“ ”That is enough”, he replied.

Someone else finally caught that one, did they? Arms include any kind of weapon, not just firearms. At the time the Constitution had been written, they were still using muskets. The primary close quarters weapon was still a saber or long knife. Arms meant not just muskets, but close quarters weapons and cannons as well. No doubts, a gun is the more effective weapon in usage, but a melee weapon, whether bladed or impact based(hammers and ax-type weapons for you non-knife law savvy people) tends to be a bit more obvious, and makes a person less interested in harming you. Many of these have secondary purposes beyond being simply a weapon, yet we have laws that prevent one from even owning some kinds of weapons in a number of states. Not a word do I hear. Personally, I like being able to own something that don’t run out of ammunition and can be used a bit more roughly if need be.

Fast and Furious was ALL about a scam against the American people for owning guns but it backfired when one plus of our agents got killed with the guns that were used in a sting. The left is VERY QUICK to want to disarm the populace and for good reason. The government can easily herd and manipulate people when they are UNARMED. It is harder to do that looking down the barrel of a gun, isn’t it Mike?

One of the men who tackled the shooter that day WAS a CCP holder and he was armed. I saw an interview he did shortly after the incident. He said he felt he couldn’t pull his weapon and try to take down the shooter because there were too many people who might get hurt by his weapon (if he missed the shooter). Instead he ran at the shooter (as did a few other bystanders) and tackled him, stopping the attack. This man kept his head and made the right decision. There should be more armed citizens like him in every city.
