Michael Moore Alleges ‘Hollywood Accounting Tricks’ Shorted Him Millions in Documentary Deal

Controversial filmmaker Michael Moore reportedly suing Harvey and Bob Weinstein, accusing the brothers of using “Hollywood accounting tricks” and “financial deception” to cheat him out of at least $2.7 million in profits from his documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11.”Michael Moore Alleges Hollywood Accounting Tricks Shorted Him Millions in Documentary Deal

The provocative documentarian filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday claiming that the Weinsteins and an affiliated entity called the Fellowship Adventure Group agreed to divide the film’s profits equally, but Moore claims that a significant portion of the profits were diverted to hide them from him. Moore also left open the possibility of pursuing further damages in the future once a thorough audit of the film’s profits is completed.

The 2004 political film grossed an estimated $222 million worldwide ($119 million in the U.S.) and presented a tale of paranoia, fear uncertainty and false patriotism following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. According to Moore’s hypothesis, the George W. Bush administration used the public’s emotional vulnerability to launch a false war on Iraq instead of pursuing those responsible for deaths on 9/11.

According to the suit, Moore claims to have “discovered substantial irregularities in the accounting” that resulted in a “gross underpayment to [Moore].”

Attorney Bert Fields, who is representing the Weinsteins, told the LA Times Monday that Moore’s claims are “just designed for the media and are utter rubbish.” He also speculated that Oscar-season rivals may have had a hand in the lawsuit. “I’m suspicious of the timing of this in this pre-award period and really wonder who put him up to it,” Fields said, acknowledging he had “no hard evidence.” The Weinsteins’ drama, “The King’s Speech,” is up for this year’s top award.

But Moore’s attorney, Larry Stein, dismissed the notion that the suit had anything to do with the year’s big awards ceremony. “Michael has no dog in the race — he doesn’t even have a film this year,” Stein said Monday afternoon. “We’ve been trying to work on a settlement for six months, long before ‘King’s Speech’ was ever up for a nomination. Michael’s been very patient, but at some point you can’t just keep waiting.”

“This is the first time Michael Moore has ever sued anyone in his 20-year career as a filmmaker. That should be some indication about how serious this is,” Stein added.

But the Weinsteins claim that all discussions of finances were concluded months ago and that Moore’s lawsuit is without merit. According to Fields, Moore had been paid nearly $20 million for the film and has “received every dime he’s entitled to.”

Moore is represented by William Morris Endeavor agent Ari Emanuel, the brother of former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. A spokesman for the agency announced Monday afternoon, however, that the agent would not be commenting on the lawsuit.

      That is EXACTLY who he is .. he has a “film festival” in Tranvese City Michigan each summer … he had the nerve with Madonna (yea that one ) at his side tell the citizens that they needed to raise cash to renovate the old theater so that it would be up to standards for his next festival.

      He could have said …I am renovating your theater (I believe it was sound system and perhaps cooling)so that we can continue to enjoy the festival (G o d knows he could afford it!) (I’m also pretty sure he could have found a way to write it off his taxes)… and look like a man but NO!

      Believe me people noticed the hypocrisy! I avoid Traverse City during “his” festival!

      20 million would go a long way in Haiti helping rebuild houses for all those people in the tents, 20 million would go a long way to help the families of soldiers lost protecting Michael Moore’s right to lie to the American people about health care in Cuba (college funds for children), 20 million would buy him a great house in Venzuela so he doesn’t have to put up with capitalism.       I’m sure Mr. Moore with be donating all the money to the less fortunate. Just think of all the people he could help. Especially during these hard times when people are dying from Global Warming, and our children are being poisoned by sugar and french fries (I’m pretty sure Mr. Moore is familiar with these poisons). Just think of all the people who could have their insurance premiums covered by that money….afterall we need to think about the “common good”, like they do in Cuba, right Mr. Moore?       Well, what does he feel “entitled” to? Half of the $220M gross – no that’s not the deal, it’s half of profits. So, assuming they taking out th etheater owner’s cuts, I’ll bet they spent some money promoting the film, producing the negatives, and after recouping production costs, the real number is somewhere between $20 million (what he got) and $110 million (half of gross, AKA ticket sales, broadcast rights, etc.). If he’s entitled to half the profits and he got $20 million, that means the Wiensteins are claiming profits (after all expenses are paid) was $40 million.

      That sounds about right – a 20% profit margin on a successful film.

      Remember Mel Gibson’s big payday from that film of his? He cashed in HUGE because he fronted the production costs, directed, wrote (or at least co-wrote), distributed and promoted the film himself – he owned almost the entire film, and was therefor entitled to nearly all the profits. MM partnered with Hollywood and shared in a wildly-successful “documentary” – that he didn’t think the Hollywood “machine” would wind up with the lion’s share of the profits is simply foolishness on his part…

      I thought anti-capitalists were not supposed to be greedy and care about money. The solution, of course, is to have the government take over and run the movie industry. All the top stars would be capped at $500,000 per movie and redistribute the income equally to all the employees. Easy for the hollywood elites to criticize the greedy corporate officers, but tougher when it’s your own industry.

      Gosh. Did I read that right? Is Michael Moore actually counting his money? Like Scrooge? Who’da thought… I would of thought that with the 20 million dollars or so he made with capitalism on the anti-capitalism move “Capitalism: A Love Story” and with him being so anti-capitalistic, he would never miss a million or two. Perhaps he’s chasing down every red cent of profit he can get to give his money to charity. Did anyone here hear about him giving all his worldly materialistic possessions to charity? I must have missed it… He certainly looks like he lives like a pauper. Like maybe he has a hard time purchasing soap, shampoo and a wash for his t-shirt at the local laundromat…
