Michael Moore: Guns Today ‘Not Really’ What Founding Fathers Meant When They Said ‘Right to Bear Arms’

Michael Moore said on Piers Morgan Tuesday night that the founding Fathers would have omitted the right to bear arms from the Bill of Rights if they would have known how much guns would modernize in the coming centuries.
Ironically maintaining that “guns don’t kill people, Americans kill people,“ Moore began by saying it must seem ”odd“ to people in other countries how we view our Constitution as being written ”through some sort of divine intervention or whatever,“ and that ”because what they thought was right in 1776 to 1789 … that is the way we have to live today in the 21st century.”
Here is a clip of his subsequent remarks, via the Washington Examiner:
Moore said:
… when [the Founding Fathers] said, the right to bear arms…you know, the “arm” back then was you could — you could only fire one shot at a time. You had a little — a little ball bearing-like bullet. You had to stuff it in the thing and then you had to do this, and the gun powder, and, you know, took 15 minutes before you could fire one shot.
Now, if the Founding Fathers could have looked into a crystal ball and seen AK-47s and Glock semiautomatic pistols, I got a feeling they wouldn’t — I think they’d want to leave a little note behind and probably tell us, you know, that’s not really what we mean when we say “bear arms.”
…I wish we would just live in this century. I think they’d want us to do that. [Emphasis added]
This isn’t the first time Moore has made wild assertions about the Founding Fathers. In January, he said that the United States was “founded on genocide and build on the backs of slaves,” while in December of 2010 he claimed the Founding Fathers would have been Wikileakers.
Here’s a “brief history of America” as Moore apparently sees it, from his award-winning “Bowling for Columbine”:
Piers Morgan added that he has been “angered” by Americans’ reaction to the Aurora, Colorado massacre, and how there has been a significant rise in gun sales in the area.
Moore agreed, responding:
I mean, I just really want to say to people, you’re not living in a movie … So let’s say you have a gun on you and a guy is there. He lets off a tear gas canister. There’s gas everywhere. People are crawling over, running over everybody, there’s total chaos, you’re going to somehow very quickly, because he’s — remember, he’s got a semiautomatic gun, so he’s popping people very quickly every second. You‘re going to somehow get your gun out and you’re back in row 15 and you’re somehow going to find that guy in the gas and shoot him and take him down. I mean, really?…
Moore concluded by saying he refuses “to live in a country” like this but, to the chagrin of many, obstinately declared that he’s “not leaving.”
He concluded: “It’s got to change. And I invite Americans who feel the same way as I do — and I believe it’s the majority — to help me change this, help everyone change this…Rise up now.”

What Moore is really saying, is we need to take the guns from the law abiding citizens, so the socialist can go confiscate the Bibles, and start sending the kids to the progressive education camps.

We get farther apart everyday with this administration actively dividing the American people on all fronts with the media’s full support. It sickens me to look to the future and see nothing but heartache with our great nation up in arms against another tyrannical government, unfortunately this time we are fighting for our own freedoms instead of some forien 3rd world country. No, this time we will have to fight to keep our freedoms to prevent us from becoming a 3rd world country. There is so much both sides disagree on now. In the past we disagreed on little things, now we are having to defend our own Constitution because a large and growing portion of our government and population has decided it is out of date. From gun control to fast food restaurants, every issue is becoming a battle not to better our country, but to tear it down. If we were trying to better our country, we would be debating how to implement strategies on how to lower taxes and create jobs. Instead, we are listening to idiots tell us what the founding fathers meant by “bear arms” the second amendment is not there so sportsman can go hunting on the weekends, it is there to protect our right to defend this republic from the tyrannical leaders we were bound to acquire eventually. Those writing the constitution knew we would have a similar situation as to be expected.

Do you guys ever read past the headlines? A line has to be drawn somewhere which is why today you can’t own a tank, a rocket launcher or a nuclear weapon even though all of these things are ‘arms’. All Moore and others are saying is that you don’t need an AR-15 to go buck hunting, and if you do, you are a terrible shot.

I don’t mind having a line drawn at tanks, rocket launchers or nukes. But don’t set up straw men to make your point. Some ordinary people might be able to afford a rocket launcher, but not a tank and if you can afford a nuke..well…I’d like to know what you do for a living. There is nothing unreasonable with owning an AR-15, or an AK for whatever purpose you choose as long as it does not involve harming anyone and or violating their rights. I’m not suggesting we strap up like military and walk around with AK’s, but owning them is perfectly fine.

Posted on July 27, 2012 at 1:40amblack9897 and anyone else that feels the 2nd Amendment must be adhered to verbatim, that it can never be changed and we must follow the exact words the founders wrote:
Let’s talk about the 2nd Amendment for a moment, shall we? As a reminder, here is what it reads exactly as written and ratified in our Constitution:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Read it again and think for a moment, because I suspect most have not ever actually done so. It says “a well regulated militia,” meaning unless you are part of a militia, and I would bet most of you are not, you do not have a constitutional right to bear arms. Another very important phrase is “A WELL REGULATED,” meaning that for those in the militia, they are subject to training, rules and other potential restrictions. There is no blanket right for every yahoo and yokel to have a firearm. I am amazed at how so many people demand we make no changes to the 2nd and that we must follow it strictly yet conveniently forget or deliberately ignore what it actually says. It’s not that difficult of a concept.

Thanks. I‘ve looked at and know what the 2nd amendment means. You only quoted the first part; after that it says the right of the people to bear arms. It’s very cut and dry. See, the whole purpose they stated this (keep in mind this or any other amendment does not GRANT me rights, but simply STATES them) was so that we the people could not be disarmed and taken over by our government. Those who have the guns call the shots. The point being I don’t need the 2nd amendment to carry a gun..if it didn’t’ exist I would still carry, why? Because I have a God-given right to protect myself. If you don’t’ want to do that, it’s your choice, but don’t’ force me to do what you believe.

The first breech loading rifles were created for the British a few years before our war. Their leaders were not impressed and refused to upgrade. The breech loaders that had already been made were then sold to the colonist to get rid of the inventory. While it was a small number of guns, WE had the most advanced rifles on the planet. I learned this in 6th grade (a long time ago), I wonder what Moore’s excuse is.

Something is Wrong
Posted on July 26, 2012 at 7:56amIf you look at the military systems of Britain and every other major European country at the time you will find that their armies were very centralized and that soldiers’ lives were very strictly controlled. It was the norm for the time, the way everyone did business. The US broke that trend by having a small centralized military and relying mostly on militias for its national defense. They did that on purpose. Teddy Roosevelt, our first raging Progressive President, destroyed that system with the passage of the National Guard Act of 1903. Never was our President meant to hold total power over the totality of the military force. Governors are not really the leaders of their National Guard units because the President only needs to speak and he has total control and command of those units. I can’t say it enough, REPEAL THE NATIONAL GUARD ACT OF 1903!!! If this one act is repealed, all arguments and attempts to get rid of the Second Amendment are immediately invalidated and abruptly ended. Research it well; one of the biggest steps that can be taken to restore America is to repeal the National Guard Act of 1903

And there it is. The very essence of progressivism. “the times have changed” Progressives on the right use this justification for undeclared wars, federal policing, to legislate morals etc. Here’s a hint. The founders knew that they couldn’t account for what the future would bring so they gave us the amendment process. Have any of you used that excuse when arguing your point on whatever? I know some of you have.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 4:34pmHey Michael, do us all a favor and LEAVE this country. You will NOT be missed! Rise up and do what – what are you asking Americans to do? By the way, you need to learn American History, because you obviously have no clue what the Founding Fathers stood for – or what their intentions were by having the Second Amendment in our Bill of Rights. And Piers, please return to England! Pathetic, both of you…
