Michael Moore Rallies Wisconsin Pro-Union Protesters

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Liberal filmmaker Michael Moore is urging Wisconsin residents to fight Republican-backed efforts to strip most public workers of their collective bargaining rights.

Moore spoke to thousands of people during a rally Saturday outside the Wisconsin Capitol, where demonstrators are nearing their third straight week of protests.

The crowd roared in approval as Moore implored protesters to keep up their struggle against Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s legislation, comparing their fight to Egypt’s revolt.

Moore says the wealthy have overreached, first taking the working class’ money and then taking their souls by shutting them up at the bargaining table.

Walker has said the legislation is needed to help ease a state deficit projected to hit $3.6 billion by mid-2013. A Democratic senator says negotiations with the GOP broke down last this week.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

Negotiations have stalled in Wisconsin over Republican-backed efforts to strip most public workers from their collective bargaining rights, a Democratic lawmaker said Saturday as pro-union demonstrators neared their third straight week of protests at the state Capitol.

Sen. Tim Cullen said talks with Republicans broke down Thursday but communication lines remain open. Cullen said it’s difficult for either side to compromise, since Democrats don’t want to lose support from their base and Republican Gov. Scott Walker doesn’t want to appear weak by backing down.

Cullen was among the 14 Democratic senators who fled Wisconsin to block a vote on the bill, which Walker has said is needed to help ease a state budget deficit projected to hit $3.6 billion by mid-2013. Walker‘s spokesman didn’t return a message Saturday, though the governor has said that he won’t compromise on the collective bargaining issue or anything that saves the state money.

Two other senators who fled the state joined the Rev. Jesse Jackson in Chicago to urge Walker to negotiate with workers. Sen. Lena Taylor said Democrats left because they “needed to slow the bill down” after it was approved unchanged in the state Assembly.

“I ask the governor, ‘do your job. Come to the table and speak to Wisconsin workers.’ We agree that fiscally we need to do things differently. We even agree that there are some places where we need to talk about how we negotiate,” Taylor said. “However we refuse to accept in America that we don’t believe that a voice at the table is an option. It is not an option of a leader and it surely is not the Wisconsin way.”

Sen. Chris Larson urged protestors to stay strong.

“We‘ve been here for the last 16 days we’ll continue to be here until worker’s rights are removed as the target in this budget repair bill by our governor,” he said.

Opponents see Walker’s bill as an effort to weaken unions, and protests have drawn tens of thousands of people to Madison since activists began a sit-in at the Capitol nearly three weeks ago. A judge late last week ended protestors’ overnight stays, but several hundred were back in the rotunda Saturday afternoon chanting “Who’s house? Our house!“ and ”Hey-hey, ho-ho, Scott Walker’s got to go!”

Renee Peplinski, a fifth-grade teacher in Wisconsin Rapids, said she doesn’t mind making financial concessions to help the state even though it would hurt her family. She’s more concerned about losing her collective bargaining rights. Without union protections, teachers would be at the mercy of administrators who could decide to fire them for any perceived slight, she said.

“Every teacher I know is depressed,” said Peplinski, 42. “Every minute of the day there’s this black cloud.”

Outside, hundreds of people marched in the streets, banging drums and carrying signs that read “No one has ever died from overexposure to education” and “Worst bill ever.” Hundreds more waited to get into the Capitol.

Walker has said the bill is needed to ease a deficit that could hit $137 million by July and $3.6 billion by the middle of 2013. His proposal comes up with the money for this year in part by forcing state employees to pay for half the cost of their pensions and twice their current health care premiums—concessions equivalent to an 8 percent pay cut.

With the labor bill stalled, Walker said he has to issue layoff notices starting Friday so the state can start to realize the $30 million savings he had assumed would come from the concessions. The layoffs wouldn’t be effective for 31 days, and Walker said he could rescind them if the bill passed in the meantime.

All state workers, except those at prisons, state hospitals and other facilities open around the clock, would be potential layoff targets.

This is no longer really about the CBA rights, its about communism, socialism, the workers parties, etc. Now we are seeing the REAL cockroaches coming out of the woodwork. Van Jones, Moore, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson. Civil unrest is the breeding ground of the socialist/communist movement and Obama and crew love it! Wisconsin is a beginning alright and guess what its also the beginning of identifying these radical treasonous rabble and washing them into the sewers they belong in. I truly hope we don’t end up in a civil between God fearing Christians who are patriotic towards America and scumsuckers like the ones mentioned above. But if it happens, so be it. Let the games begin, and yes WE THE PEOPLE the real American are going to win. BIG TIME!

When a man can have the free choice to be in a union member or not is the day I will support a union. If it is so fundamentally important membership wouldn’t need to be manditory. Unionism is tyranny plan and simple. “Pay us or you can’t work here”. Sounds like coercion to me. Force by another name is still force. Even if it is for the sake of the childern.

Wisconsin’s Lt. General offered a reason to limit collective bargaining for the unions: The teachers’ health care is provided through a company at twice the cost of what the state could procure with another company. Because the union demands the more “cadillac” version of health care with the higher cost company, the state must provide it at taxpayer expense. Believe it or not, teacher union workers feel they have a right to be provided VIAGRA at the expense of the tax payer!!!

“I ask the governor, ‘do your job. Come to the table and speak to Wisconsin workers.’ We agree that fiscally we need to do things differently. We even agree that there are some places where we need to talk about how we negotiate,” Taylor said”

The reason it‘s not Governor Scott Walker’s job to speak to the Wisconsin workers at the bargaining table is because WE ARE NOT A DEMOCRACY, but a representative Republic. Governors are elected to do a job for a certain amount of time, after which someone else may be voted in.

Unless what he’s saying is that Walker is violating unalienable rights, in which case he must attend to the matter.

But the argument offered by the Left with regard to collective bargaining, is that Walker is prohibiting workers from doing so. This is completely false, and it takes a skewed view of unalienable rights to think it’s true.

See, NO ONE is prohibiting workers – either in the public or private sector – from joining with others in one voice to make their case that they ought to have the right, as a group, to demand certain things of their employers (in the case of the public sector, that’s the taxpayer).

What the Wisconsin Leftist protesters fail to realize is that since rights belong to the individual – and the Constitution recognizes this – and since we are a Constitutional Republic, America does not recognize group rights.

You can join with, and protest, with whoever you want, and however many people you want, and unless you go through the process our Constitutional Republic spells out for recalls to get someone else in office – and again, unless Walker is violating the Constitution (which he’s not) – the amount of people you attempt to collectively bargain along side with means absolutely nothing.

Of course the flip side of this issue is that a single person ought to be enough to make the case that a law is unConstitutional, and the government must then consider that law unenforceable – all because truth does not depend on the amount of people saying it.

Rice Water, it is simple really. Sure the unions will be willing to concede pay cuts and paying more for their medical and retirement funds this year, however, when the contracts are up for renewal in a year or two, they will hold the state hostage for reinstatement of the benefits that they lost because the budget has been fixed (or at least we hope it will be) and the state will have to give into their demands or all of the mindless union workers will go on strike because their union boss said to. By limiting their ability to bargain to just salaries (within sane limits) they ensure that the unions ability to bankrupt the state is limited.

Mr. Moore you have it wrong. The unions have overreached not the wealthy. The unions have created an atmosphere where state workers are given benefits beyond what you would find in the private sector. This has not only resulted in extreme burdens on the tax payers of WI, but has had a helping hand in our 3.6 billion dollar short-fall. The teachers know the gravey train is over. So the unions use the state workers anger to further their own agenda. Hold firm Governor Walker!! You have tremendous support!!!!

But ok,,,cause if the economy ever crashes because of the prog-trogs policies,,,,he’s gonna be on a crash diet and will have to actually work a job. Then we’ll see how long it takes for someone to cave his face in when he spouts his discontent for the socialist society.

      Rice Water,

Thats the point, part of the Collective Bargaining rights that the unions in Wi has right now there is no cap on the pay. Part of the legislation removing collective bargaining still allows them to negotiate their pay raises but in line with the price index (basically inflation rate).

@AZDEBI and A DOCTOR’S LABOR IS NOT MY RIGHT

Great stuff guys, kind of like poetry in motion. However, Azdebi, I do have to say, we have no clue just how much overall control radicals have. That said, without going into a rant on reality of our system, the rising prices due to gouging, the current spin on the economic upturn as though none of the world’s problems will stop our country from steam rolling to prosperity, and other details…I suppose the best thing is to hold our heads up high and maintain that positive attitude. As they say, if you play a game, the winner is usually decided on the outset of the game, not during it. If we can maintain a positive stance and attitude we can do this, we can break through, we can elect enough fiscally conservative minded people and a new President to hopefully turn our country around to true prosperity.

Anyway, I have a theory about the left. I don’t think they are all stupid and foolish. I believe many of them know full well the consequences of their actions and desires, knowing the radical ends of a world run solely by them, controlled entirely by them, with hand-picked power circles will ensure anywhere from a Utopia (for the dreamers) to a world that perpetually allows them to remain in power (like all wannabe dictators dream).

I believe Fatty McFatterson is one of those who is fully aware of the reality of things, and sees himself as in a position of power that he does not want to give up. He rather enjoys spending other people’s money, and seems to love making his own.

It really is sad how many people they’ve duped into following them, especially when Moore has been known to criticize the police directly, but hey, as many wise men have stated, those desperate for power or to keep what they feel is theirs, or what will be stolen will suffer working with any enemy so long as their cause runs parallel.

You would think they might…check on what Collective Bargaining really is: Price Gouging.

If we had Right to Work laws, people who want to support unions are free to do so, while the intelligent people want their freedom and rights to make their own decisions, like who their money supports in national elections. Most important to me is being able to fire bad teachers. Test scores have been going down yearly while you keep the inept teachers at work damaging your kids. Duh? Expecting the public to pay their pensions is unforgivable. We pay our own, so should they.

      BECK IS A CARD-CARRYING AFL-CIO UNION MEMBER
AlterNet / By Ted Cox February 26, 2011
While Glenn Beck, Hannity, O’Reilly and Limbaugh have been railing against union workers in Wisconsin, all belong to an AFL-CIO union. They, along with Charlie sheen, Kieth Olberman and Brit Hume belong to the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) union, which is the AFL-CIO affiliate for television and broadcast workers. They all voted in the Los Angeles 2010 general ballot Election 1281001 (available on-line) and all receive collective bargaining benefits and minimum salary rights.
A report voted to the front page of Reddit Friday claimed that Hannity, Limbaugh and O’Reilly were union members, as well as Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter. Right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin – who, for tax purposes is only a “frequent guest” on the network, is not a member of the union.
