Michele Bachmann Pushes New Pro-Choice Law…for Light Bulbs

Aside from the attempted trickery in the headline, there is a serious issue behind this story. H.R. 5616 is back in play. For the neophytes, 5616 was the Bachmann-proposed bill from 2008 meant to blunt a law passed the prior year that would have changed the way Americans buy light bulbs starting next January. The new law was affectionately titled, Light Bulb Freedom of choice Act:
3/13/2008–Introduced.
Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act – Amends the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to repeal provisions concerning energy efficiency standards for general service incandescent lamps, rough service lamps, other designated lamps, and incandescent reflector lamps unless the Comptroller General has transmitted to Congress within six months after this Act’s enactment a report that finds that: (1) consumers will obtain a net savings, in terms of dollars spent on monthly electric bills and expenses for new light fixtures to accommodate the use of the light bulbs required by such provisions, compared to dollars spent before their enactment; (2) the phase-out of incandescent light bulbs required by such provisions will reduce overall carbon dioxide emissions by 20% in the United States by 2025; and (3) such phase-out will not pose any health risks, including risks associated with mercury containment in certain light bulbs, to consumers or the general public, including health risks with respect to hospitals, schools, day care centers, mental health facilities, and nursing homes.
Requires the report to include monthly and yearly projections of expenses for electric bills and new light fixtures for January 1, 2012, through December 31, 2017.
Almost two years from the date of the original pitch, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann has re-introduced the bill stating:
“The government has no business telling an individual what kind of light bulb to buy.”
The 2011 version is officially listed as H.R. 849, and targets the elimination of two specific parts of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 dealing with energy-efficiency standards for incandescent and fluorescent bulbs and labeling standards. Bachmann’s bill would permit the 2007 standards to survive if the comptroller general is able to prove the estimated savings to consumers, reduced carbon-dioxide emissions and that the presence of mercury in the new bulbs poses no health risks to consumers.
That last item, the part about proving the presence of a neurotoxin like mercury poses no health risk, is going to be tough to get past. When the law mandating the shift to the new bulbs was passed, even NPR took issue with the mercury problem.
Four other Republican Congressman have joined Ms. Bachmann as co-sponsors of the bill, including Ron Paul and Ted Poe of Texas, Paul Broun of Georgia and Doug Lamborn of Colorado.

Yes drill now, if not, when?
Please we need to de-fund a ton of things, not be distracted by someone seeking brownie points…
Sorry Michelle but put it in a bill with allot of other important things maybe but if you can look at the bigger picture this is nit picking and a big waste of what little time we have to turn this all around.

She talked about the Obamacare bill that was passed by the last congress….the bill that Pelosi said they would have to pass to read? Well, apparently within the bill is a provision to begin funding of Obamacare with $105,465,000,000.00 (that’s $105+ Billion folks). She said she is taking it up with the house leadership to find ways to eliminate this funding.
This is what happens when the people we elect to congress abrogate their responsibilities, and follow the tyrannical rantings of a socialist moron like Nancy Pelosi. The woman, and the rest of the Democratic leadership involved in this criminal act, should be brought up on charges of malfeasance, and impeached immediately!!!

Posted on March 3, 2011 at 7:28amI bought 2 of the new flourescent bulbs and they don’t put out enough light to see anything. I then went out and bought enough regular bulbs to last me the rest of my life. Now the question is how to dispose of the flouescent ones that are full of mercury. Since my democratic Senator helped pass this bill I have decided to ship both of these bulbs to her office, with a letter explaining that I do not know how to properly dispose of these bulbs, and since she was so anxious to pass this bill, I am sure she will know how to dispose of it without doing any undue damage to the enviroment! This will cost me a few bucks but it will be well worth it! Wonder what these politicians would do if all of us did this?

Another stupid, illogical Dem idea: “Let’s force everybody to use them.”

Posted on March 3, 2011 at 9:35amI asked our environmental waste department in my city how to dispose of these bulbs. they said just carefully put it in a plastic bag and into the regular trash! I was a bit shocked to hear this, I then asked how can you do that what about the mercury buildup in the land fills, tons of these light bulbs over a period of time has got to have some effect on the land, water etc. She said no problem at all. I can not imagine this, also, how does one pick one of these things off the floor if broken, she tells me to just put a paper towel over it and carefully pick every piece of it up. CRAZY. I suppose I am not the take a breath at the same time of picking the pieces up and putting them into my plastic back and taking it out to the trash, yes CRAZY.
2 upsides to this, more plastic bags will be sold and used to cause problems in our environment.
Report Post »and then of course the added need to have more paper towels which of course helps with the cutting of culling of our forest. Wonder if we could follow the money and find out who is benefiting from all this new regulation. Were are all the Environmentalist screaming about his one?

Flourescants cause me severe migraines, and for those of you who’ve suffered from migraines, you probably know what I mean. Forcing me to buy CF bulbs is akin to sentencing me to a lifetime of torture. Seriously. I realize that sounds dramatic for people who don’t suffer from migraines, and who don’t therefore know how lighting can act as a trigger, but for those of us who suffer from severe migraines, it’s frequently a trigger. Not one of these numbskulls in DC give the first consideration to this, or anything else. I‘m in my mid 40’s. Unfortunately, because I am literally the last home on a power grid, we get lots of power surges, so we go through roughly 3-4 bulbs per month. Therefore, I’m having to consider how many more months I intend to live, and multiplying that out, yes, I am stocking up.
When I say big government gives me a headache, I mean it.

I for one, by CHOICE, have tried Edison style fluorescents since they first came out on the market . these bulbs have always been a disappointment for me. the cfl style now available are a wash compared to incandescent lamps. this is not considering the mercury.
i am now re-lamping my home with the Edison style LED’s . For me they have the appeal of low energy usage and we will probably put them in our will for the children.
Once again: this is MY CHOICE, the gov‘t has no business sticking it’s ‘nose’ in my affairs

You‘re right about the life span of the CFL’s. I have not had even one of them live up to the claims of the designer or manfr. They are bright to begin and then dim considerably after 200 or so hours. The bases all scorch or turn dark in about 300-500 hours. LED’s are a great way to go if you can afford to purchase them in the beginning. They just are not practical right now…and it will be quite some time before they become affordable.
Report Post »Our household choice is to return to incandecent for the lights where we need the most illumination…keep CFL’s in the lights we want to leave on for long periods of time or for when we are away from home. Keep our eyes peeled for good deals on LED’s and watch for price drops. Even LED‘s have a lower lifespan than the manfr’s say they do. One LED fails…then two…then three….then…well you see where this is going.

Oh yes; and don’t believe me do your own research on Socialism, Marxism, Communism, Liberalism are Progressives…… you have a computer as everyone else does. Do your homework and then pick your side once again and I think you will see things just a little different than you see them now if you are able to think out of the box to the next step you are taking. Only then when you have no freedoms will you truly understand Capitalism and what it gives you the right to say now and then read The Constitution, The Bill of Rights and The Declaration of Independence for only in America do you now at this time have the right to do and say anything you want. Why do you think everyone wants to come to this country for and do anything to get here?Do you think it is the freedoms we have now are what we are going to become. We are still The Beacon of the Free World and when that light goes out there will be no more hope for the world. What do you think holds this world together and when anything goes wrong who do they look too. I don’t think it is China, Russia, North Korea, Cuba, Kuwait, Iraq, Switzerland, Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Africa and the list is endless but I do know who they know they can count on for the next few days possibly The Good Old United States of America and you had better think and research that before you start blowing your horn so loud. And if you don’t like America and her laws try living somewhere else in the world and try doing what you are attempting to do here and see how far you get. Let us now look at Libya and any of the Middle Eastern countries and see how it turns out in the long run. I will bet like Iran did.

Freedom is neither meaningless, nor wasting time, and the economy runs much better whenever someone can simply start a business at their kitchen table, or in their garage, without hiring 10 lawyers, 2 tax accountants (to see if they agree & keep from being auditid. ) filing 50 pages of business plans, in triplicate and attending 2-5 yrs of seminars by the small business admin. on how to legally do so. I love it when the local paper headlines a business coming into our area because of local tax deals, (why they don‘t just reduce them for everyone I’ll never understand.) and the story ends with … by _(3-5 yrs away) they will employ 9-17 people.

There is technology existing that can transfer data across your power lines. Those vibrating molecules can be “listened” to with microelecronics and that data sent over your power lines back to some surveillance program.

Posted on March 3, 2011 at 11:31amIts a GE think. The Dems are in bed with GE. The bulbs stink and are dangereous. We must wake up and see what the Dems and doing to this country. We are loosing our freedom bit by bit. I hate the term “new normal” We need leaders!

Posted on March 3, 2011 at 11:53amI love the curly Q mercury filled light bulbs! But I also like CHOICE! Those bulbs look like crap in an exposed fixture (chandelier, ceiling fan fixtures, bathroom fixtures, etc). The “specialty” compact fluorscents (Torpedo, globe, etc.) take a long time to reach full brightness, and are expensive!! I bought a case of incandescents for my hanging fixtures as well as my bathrooms.
Don‘t count on Bachmann’s bill passing. If you like incandescents, stock up NOW.

Posted on March 3, 2011 at 1:33pmI spent the weekend (3 nights) in a Howard Johnson which had completely converted over to CFL’s. The lighting sucked and hurt my eyes. One quick trip to Wal-mart saved my weekend, I bought 8 NORMAL light bulbs and replaced everything in my room for the 3 days I stayed there. Upon leaving, I informed management that I would never book another room at their establishment until they got rid of the Clown-Fun-Lighting… it was NOT my idea of comfort or home.
I have purchased 4 cases of normal light bulbs. A life-time supply. The who set of bulbs cost me about $50. I will not use any light bulb which does not has a true black-body curve. Gas bulbs suck.

“The reason is because GE brought these bulbs out and Obama loves GE”
Simply a means to an end, which is to SURVEIL YOU and to screw around with your bodily functions by using frequency pulses to induce electric current in your body.
Light is electromagnetic radiation.
It is electromagnetism.
Electromagnetic induction can happen using light.
You can also use a laser-induced plasma channel to create virtual wires for electric current conduction.

Posted on March 3, 2011 at 3:32pmThe mercury laced bulbs are designed as scalar transmitters, which are structured in a solenoid vortex container, accelerated using electromagnetic fields to relativistic speeds, which in turn vaporize, turns into a mercury plasma, generating photons which reflect off of titanium dioxide dopants, mixed with phosphorus.
A scalar transmitter can send and receive holographic data to any point in space.
That holographic data can be sinked or pumped with so much electromagnetic energy that it becomes a tangible object.
It can essentially act as an eye or an ear.

Posted on March 3, 2011 at 4:07pmI agree with the Congresswoman. Any law based on the FALSE Global Warming scam should be reversed. CFL’s are more expensive, yet don’t seem to last any longer than incandescent, and the mercury they contain make them more of a hazard. Who the heck is going to call the EPA to clean up a broken CFL? Not me. I might put it in a ziplock, inside of a ziplock, but I am not going to pay to have it cleaned up. It was a silly law, thought up by silly people, who let an even sillier man, scam them.

I’m with Miami on this one. Led’s, they are brighter, last longer, and use less energy to light.
**************
Sure, last’s longer……I bought a mess of them because they were advertised to last 5 yrs. when first out. The first lasted about 1 1/2 yrs, the second 2 mo’s, the next 3 burnt out within a week, I had one that lasted until I walked out of the room. Don’t believe everything you read.

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 10:23amWhile Lighting is perhaps 10% of your electrical load, the type bulb you choose does impact efficiency. The Bulb you choose should be task specific, and you should understand the factors effecting the quality of light. The incandescent while basically providing adequate light is very inefficient as most of the energy consumed is converted to heat. This adds heat load in Air conditioning costs. For the factors that effect quality of light: http://www.watchman2012.com/spout15.html

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 10:56amDon’t like the global warming defeating environmentally friendly lightbulbs to save the planet? Then you must be against the children and for those moneygrubbing rich people!
Yada yada yada! I think the jig is up with this bogus politically driven junk science of man-made global warming, the whole premise is flawed that being that CO2 causes warming, even Al Gore had to admit publicly that CO2 doesn’t drive temperature it follows. So all of those schemes and legislation/regulation asserting lowering CO2 levels to fix a nonexistent problem is bogus on its face, I think a majority of the people are on to the scam and the law designed to phase out incandescent bulbs need to be tossed on the trash heap with Obama care and the recent banking reform.
This is insane, just this week there was a report about overlapping government agencies costing the taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars and were told that they’re having difficulty finding what can be cut from the federal budget? We did lose one third of the federal government and the only effect it will probably have is an increase in efficiency and a lower cost to us!
