Michelle Obama: Child Obesity a ‘National Security Threat’

Michelle Obama is set to make a major announcement today: fat children are a “national security threat.” The announcement is part of prepared remarks for a news conference on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act slated for Monday morning.

From Politico:

First Lady Michelle Obama plans to warn in remarks Monday that the nation is seeing “a groundswell of support” for curbing childhood obesity, and she is unveiling new ammunition from current and retired military leaders.

“[M]ilitary leaders … tell us that when more than one in four young people are unqualified for military service because of their weight,” the first lady says in prepared remarks, “childhood obesity isn’t just a public health threat, it’s not just an economic threat, it’s a national security threat as well.”

The remarks, as given during the bill’s signing, are below:

Although obeseity if an unhealthy “choice”, its still a “choice” and I agree that we should do something about it but ….through education not indoctrination and certainly not through govt intervention…The absoulte best we can do is teach our children and hope they listen(any good parent knows this)

Our liberal culture has raised children to expect everything to be GIVEN to them. From jobs, to food to money to handouts, to good grades, to sports trophies…and somehow NOW she is saying that it is a “security threat”. Our American culture of 2010 hasn’t had the expectation of WORK FOR YOUR LIVING so our kids are sitting around playing games while mom and dad live on GOVERNMENT programs. Thanks DEMS. I blame your dumb butts for making us a country of lazy fat A$$es.

Child hood obesity is caused by the stress of parents working 2 jobs. Instead of being home with their children and cooking good meals they spend their time trying to make enough money to fit into the “rich” category just to have half of it taken away by the government. It‘s Obama’s fault.

I believe most of the obesity is from food stamp recipients because they can have all the food they want. I can‘t because I cannot get food stamps even though I’m retired and “just” getting by. That’s not a complaint. I wouldn’t accept government help and as such, I eat in moderation and am not obese. So stop the food stamp program Aunt Jemima. Food Stamps and welfare are the real national security threat. Before you take me to task I accept the people who really need assistance. Most do not.

Of all the people I know, There is but a small percentage that has even a a minimal interest in the issues that we discuss here. The few that keep up with the issues are older men, mostly veterans. And all of these are further right than left. Any opinions I get from younger people are further left. Most of these youngsters represent the body piercing tattooed bunch, and have only surface understandings of anything from politics to religion. I cringe when I think that at 18 years, they have the right to vote. Their votes could be bought so cheaply, as can their virtue.

Michelle Obama would do well to look at the mirror of herself first before going into this misguided crusade. We are Americans, the world’s most advanced civilization, the world’s smartest and most liberated people. Each American family is headed by a father and a mother – we call these folks parents. Please do not invade their territory and begin acting like Stalin or Mao and sticking your fingers where they don’t belong. Why don’t you retire to your White House garden and raise your collard greens and yams and be satisfied with your “fashionable” clothes and shoes and yes go ahead and vacation in Spain… we’ll pay for it.

agreed! A funny quote i find describes this whole food police deal:

“…the whole point of this country(America) is if you want to eat garbage, balloon up to 600lbs and die of a heart-attack at 43, YOU CAN. You’re free to do so. To me that’s beautiful.” -Ron, from Parks & Recreation

Now I’m not saying that living that kind of lifestyle is healthy. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t recommend it, obviously. But what that comment was, is what liberty is. It’s my personal choice to eat healthy or not and bureaucrats have no place in our kitchens! Michelle: get a hobby.

Michelle needs to stay out of our lives, her hubby has done enough damage already. Parents don’t need to make their children eat vegetables or cut out snacks. What they need to do is limit the amount of time that their children sit in front of the television playing those games. They need to get them outside and play a while.

Yes, I agree with you, because that is the problem, whether they work or play they are still burning off the calories that they put on. Since they have done away with physical ed in schools and let children just sit around texting or talking on cell phones or playing games on gameboy’s they get no exercise to speak of. The problem is when we were growing up we thought we had it hard, so we wanted our children to have more than we did. Get out of that mentality and give kids something to do. Then they will stay more active when they get older. But let them lay around and it won’t take long to put on the pounds and become a couch potato. Beside we could learn this lesson also.

Actually, the best solution might be to home school, so that they never put themselves on the outside of a school lunch, never hear the indoctrination machine, aren’t taught to waste time and stretch the day out so that they get their full complement of “instructional minutes.” and neither have the money for video games (because its being spent on textbooks and instructional materials) nor get exposed to them by their peers. My child is homeschooled. She gets healthy meals at home. She gets her work done quickly and gets outside to play. She is the perfect weight. Parents do it better, because they actually love the child, and don’t look at them as pawns in the future military.

Agreed! It’s about activity time-wise in proportion to the video games kids play. P.E. has become an optional part of the school day and maybe more schools should re-think that. What I find offensive is Michelle‘s attitude that parents shouldn’t make the decisions. Last I checked, parents are the very people who brought these kids into the world! Who is she to decide. I also don’t have a problem with the government schools providing more nutritious foods and getting rid of the pop and junk food vending machines in the schools. National security threat may be an exaggeration. I also think that exercise programs should be reinstituted in the schools. My main issue with this bill and bills like this is the gov. waist and incompetence at carrying the worthy goals to fruition. If you send you kids to gov. schools and it is paid for by tax payers then nutritious meals is their responsibility. I insist that the gov. controls end at the school gate. Unfortunately this agenda goes way beyond the school yard and if you give them an inch they will take a mile.

If any of you have had lunch with your child at school you know that very few will even eat the slop. When I was in school (class of 78) most meals were good and nutritious.

However, we didn’t have the coke and vending machines the way they do today. We didn’t have more homework than classwork the way they do today. We had recess and gym, time to play when we got home too.

Weight problems stem less from what you eat and more from your activity level. If she really wanted to help children she would take Disney movies out of school, bring back gym and, do something about the time wasted in school so the homework load wouldn’t take 4 hours a night!

One in four? Just this past February it was one in three (one third) that were obese in the general population, according to Michelle…

Maybe we could go back to having PE class every day in public schools?

      How about funding after-school programs?

The so-called “Twinkie Diet” proved it’s how much you eat (calories) not what you eat, so perhaps we can get off this “food desert” kick and stop funding organic farms and rachet back the iron fist on the school lunch program, and instead focus on exercise?

In Detroit, only 25% of students graduate high school – I kinda think that’s a bigger problem than their waist line…

I noticed her choices of foods and asked if she hadn’t heard Michelle saying our overweight kids are a NATIONAL Security..She laughed so hard.. and told me Michelle could stuff it.. and should worry about her OWN kids not everyone elses.. I find it amusing cause not only did she vote for Obama she thought Michelle was great too..Yep even the left is SICK of BOTH of them..

One more step of the nanny state is now a reality; how long until they tell us who to marry and how many kids will be had for the relationship? Or for that matter just do away with the state of marriage, and of a true family, just raising the kids on the orders of the state? To me, it now seems the next to final step in the annhilation of parenthood and family is forged.

Also, why is being overweight now declared a ‘National Security Threat’? Does this mean the next time I make my triple layered fudge cake with 2 inches of frosting I am to be made an enemy of the state all of a sudden?

      Would not suprise me.

Or is there an effort to redefine what a child is? 26 for health care, was it in the 30′s for the DREAM act? Next campaign maybe they will line up 26 year old children for a backdrop.

Conservatism as a political and economic philosophy, is a valid, defensible perspective. But here we on this website we have the extreme right: mocking the First Lady for her attempts to bring awareness to childhood obesity. Here, on this website, we have the defense of fat children: parents can send their kids to school with a bag of sugar and lard anywhere in this country, but you want the schools to provide the lard instead. America is one of the most obese nations in the world, as well as a nation highest in death due to fat, and you guys ridicule attempts to raise awareness – not demand – of those factors that contribute to early death and make America, as a whole, the fat people of the world.

This isn’t a political issue. You have the right to make your kids as fat as you want. But you look a little ridiculous defending the right of your children to be fat under the banner of conservatism, which is a political and economic philosophy, not a dietary one.

      @JZS

People on this website are not angry at MO for championing the cause of childhood obesity. What we are angry about is being FORCED to pay for this program when the country is in a recession and high unemployment. Furthermore, we are tired of the government overstretching its power into every aspect of our lives as it wishes. Finally, its the hypocrisy. Look- if Laura Bush was illiterate, or Barbara Bush a drug addict, everyone one on this board would have been just as outraged at their social causes. Its not the cause- its the support behind it, whose funding it, and what constitutional rights are affected.

There should be some basic national guidelines for what is allowed in public schools. There is no need for there to be pop and chip machines, the food paid for in the free lunch and breakfast programs should be of the utmost health value, and students should be allowed salad and build your own sub bars for a-la-carte. Yes, if parents want to fatten up their kids, they have that right – and can send their kids to school with a 2liter a day with their leftover pizza and suzi-q’s, but there’s no reason those items need to be served in the cafeteria.

Michelle has good points, but like all lefties goes too far in the wrong directions. When I was in high school I lobbied for better school food choices, and to get sparkling water in our pop machines. I organized a food strike that cost our district hundreds of thousands of dollars, and we got what we wanted. We got a salad bar, skim milk, Klarbrunn water, a sub bar, and more steamed veggies in our hot lunches. Tater tots are not a vegetable!

I agree with the poster about food stamps and the quality of food you see people buying. It’s sick. People wonder how poor people can be so fat – but all they buy with their govt money is crap. Instead of mandating that nobody sells crap though, we need to stop giving people the money to buy it. There should be time limits to how long a person can be on foodstamps unless they are on permanent disability. Of course, that is NOT what MO has in mind.

Is this a warning that we are going to have a war soon?
Or is this a warning, that just because the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, are really about “opium & oil” and that the next war, might actually be about defending our freedom?
It’s really a shame people have died in war, because of these selfish, satanist, illuminiti thugs; so they can run drugs from there to here, and have illegal immigrants bring it here. And then, also have all the oil and it’s millions, to live off da fat of da land!!!
All of this, while americans are none the wiser. This is 100% pure deception and evil!!!
Dubya’s daddy was the first to volunteer his (CIA) butt, to start the first drug running efforts, and Dubya took over, and gave his all to this mission too.
Michelle knows why there is obesity too. It’s the water, the food, and air we breath, that has been treated to kill us, and dumb us down, to make us be their slaves!
The real threat is within our own government, and it looks like they’ll have their way, if people don’t snap out of it!

The worse part I find about what they call people “obese” by is the BMI. This standard takes nothing into account for ones muscle mass when it is looked at by the military. The 6 foot tall athlete is usually considered obese if he is 220 lbs ripped from playing football. Not all obesity is the same, but in their eyes, (military) it is. They (AF especially) would prefer the 5′6″ 150 lbs marathon runner over the 6′2″ 230 lbs gym rat.

I also agree that the nobamas are the real threat to national security.

Don’t worry, Michelle. One in seven people can’t afford to buy food right now and the economy is worsening. Pretty soon childhood starvation will be the topic of the day thanks to you and your hubby.

During the 70′s at a midwest public elementary school kids use to walk to school from miles away. Teachers and principals made sure all children were acccounted for and seated before the bell rang for the day. At the start of the class all kids would stand and say ‘the pledge’ to the flag with our right hand over our heart. Mid-morning even on the coldest days teachers would escort their students outside for morning recess. It didn’t last for more than 7-10 minutes but the teacher would not allow the students to sit around they were to participate in some sort of activity and there was always a lot to play…tetherball, climbing on a jungle gym, swings, monkey bars, hop scotch, jump rope, kickball, red rover, dodge ball, etc. Classes would resume then lunch would be served. Chocolate milk was reserved for Fridays, lunches were served on real trays with real utensils. The teacher would share lunch with her class then escort them outside for another 20 minutes or so of recess. It wasn’t always your teacher watching you, but it was a teacher, sometimes they would get involved in the activies as well. Again everyone must participate. The afternoon would be filled with more learning then then there would be another 7-10 minute break where you would once again go outside and play. There would be PE classes at least 3 times a week one week and two the next alternating with music class. Afterschool when you reach 5th and 6th grades you could participate (everyone did) in after school sports program. In the fall it flag football, winter would be basketball and spring track. It did not matter if your were a boy or girl all were welcome to play. The PE teacher would run the programs, the best got to play more, the uninterested might be warming the bench but their was an activity to do if your chose to. After the school day was done, students would walk blocks and blocks and even miles to get home. Gone are the days of jungle gyms, red rover, dodge ball, and even kickball and even swing sets in some schools. You are lucky to get more than one out door break and PE has been replaced by classes that the schools feel more important. In general the school lunches aren’t the problem– lack of physical activity is the problem. Kids aren’t allowed to be kids anymore.

      @ Armed Patriot,
It‘s nice living in a cozy fuzzy world isn’t it? You might want to hold onto those arms while you can! The only left and right you’ll find, is on your body.
I think I’ve been a visitor here longer than thou….I’ll pop by and visit as it suits me! Try and digest that!

      @ Armed Patriot,
I forgot to add; they have places to comment for “commies” too. They’d be the ones like you, who have a problem with others posting information using their freedom. They have problems with people kinda like me, who use their God-given right, to voice their opinion.

free2bme1961 I just thought you were lost and in the wrong place. You mentioned most of Alex Jones conspiracy theories… minus the 9-11 truthers and birthers, I do support your right to speak what you see as the truth and trust me… I am well informed and doing my homework. I support it so much that I have served in the USMC, US Army, and the CA Army Natl. Guard to defend it. Commie??? Please. Constitutional Patriot to the core. I just thought you were lost. And as far as my guns go, SWAT is jealous.

      @ Armed Patriot,
If that was an apology for trying to make me feel unwelcome here; I accept.
I can assure you that I need no assistance in doing my homework. If I chose to share what I have learned, it is not being done maliciously. I call it “tough love”….lol.
It is also sad that people may perceive that I enjoy sharing the information. If it doesn’t occur to people this information upsets me too, then,…..? This is why I encourage people to research and learn on their own.
The government deception and corruption, goes far beyond what most can accept or even comprehend. This is sad and disturbing, to say the least!
Lost? I‘d be lost if I didn’t have the Lord in my life.

When that woman loses 1/2 of her butt, I’ll start working on my abs. Tit for tat.

Sounds like she is trying to justify the goverments plan to starve the poor with the food saftey bill…I was overweight when I joined the Air Force but, after six week of running around a flight pad in 105 degree weather in San Antonio and I was a lean, mean, fighting machine.
