Michelle Obama Uses Food Network Show to Spread Healthy Eating Message

Rob Irvine, the notoriously tough as nails chef on the Food Network, can turn a failing restaurant around in as little as two days and with only $10,000.

On last night’s “Restaurant Impossible” though, he was issued a whole new kind of challenge from one of the most public figures in the country: the first lady. Michelle Obama petitioned Irvine to “take on one of the toughest missions in America.” As you might have guessed, this would be “helping our kids eat right and get active.”

Scaling the overarching goal back to apply to a Washington, D.C., community center — Horton’s Kids — Irving and his team were tasked with giving the facility a dining room, updated kitchen and a community garden.

Watch the first lady’s preview of the challenge from the show:

Irvine admitted to Radar Online that he is “not into politics,” but he is on the other hand into “helping children eat well.” According to the Restaurant Impossible website, the community center feeds more than 100 kids each day but part of that challenge is working in an only 600-square-foot space.

The Hill reports Irvine getting an “A+” from the first lady and some of the students at the community center. It also points out that this is not the first TV stint Mrs. Obama has made on more mainstream television shows to promote her “Let’s Move” initiative, also making appearances on NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “The Biggest Loser.”

I do not know if what you claim is true, and how someone’s sexual preference relates to what they cook is beyond me, but that said, in my understanding, gay people are some of the most creative people on the planet in art, fashion, food and more. Now, this could be just a stereotype that I am misinterpreting, but it certainly seems as if they are.
Is Mario Batalli gay? I don’t know, but I do know he turned me onto some phenominal Italian food that I love to this day. Is Chef Cat Cora gay? I don’t know, but I’d love to taste some of the dishes she creates. Is Bobby Flay gay? I have no idea, but his TexMex cuisine is to die for! Is Paula Deen gay? I doubt it, and although unhealthy, her food is spectacular!
Who cares if any of these are gay? That does not negate the awesome cooking and creative abilities of any of these people and others.

@JHRUSKY: The problem is that people let their ignorance cloud their thoughts. Which means, if someone is gay they’re an abomination to society and they are useless. It’s sad to know this, but most ignorant people are like this.

Are they (the Obama’s) trying to legislate what you can/cannot buy for food? I know Bloomberg is, and a few other mayors around the country are, but are the Obamas doing that or just trying to inform people? I am asking seriously as I have not heard of the Obama’s wanting to legislate what we can/cannot buy, but perhaps I missed it and if so, I certainly would like to be informed about it.

You are one sick Marxist puppet to take up for people who are trying to take your freedoms and disguise it as caring about your health. People who allow babies to be killed and gender picked do not care about your health. People have to be babies before they become adults to eat all this ‘healthy food’. Is something not clear here?

Michelle should take up knitting on a exercise bike. She needs to stay out of everyones business and quit helping tie up the DHEW with her recommendations to hubby? so they can stay in our business by law. The more they get, the more they want. It is all part and parsel of the leftist agenda. People who kill babies by legislation have no real regard for human life or babies who do make it to an older age. By trying to pump up excitement they have made food – one of the great and wonderful experiences of being alive – stressful and anxiety ridden — all the shows are competitions or some kind of (blank) WAR – ie cupcake, bbq etc. Now they go political?? You guys took a billion dollar idea and turned it into a million dollar idea.

They really don’t get it….that food is the only thing some of us have to enjoy more out of life…..when you aren‘t a millionaire and you can’t fly all over the world, and you live paycheck to paycheck, it’s nice to be able to cook, and try different dishes and feel excited about the evening meal or small weekend parties, cooking, and the number one thing in most American’s lives is TV and food because we are too tired to do anything after a hard days work and eating is enjoyable….so when Michelle says, “Let them eat grass” we are supposed to feel good about that even though taxpayers paid a hefty $485 for just one of her “lobster and vodka” dinners…just one meal, that’s almost my monthly grocery bill and it was just one meal for her…. I think vodka is pure sugar in your system, isn’t it? Maybe she should stop drinking vodka. Let’s legislate that, shall we? The college kids would love to have her help there, wouldn’t they?…you must admit, Michelle, alcohol probably does more damage than high calorie food, milk, coke, popcorn, salt and candy and ice cream combined…she’s one control freak!

Since a good deal of “food” today is genetically modified and loaded with chemicals, it matters very much what you put in your mouth. You have to make a concerted effort to find decent food these days and even then, it might not be what you think it is. So, what isn’t a scam anymore?? Food is, that’s for sure.

The Holy Bible says to take no though of what you eat or drink for your health depends on God. You have No strength without him. People’s body usually tells them what they are lacking in their diet by cravings of food. Some people who are drinking skim mild are drinking a poorer quality of milk these people sell after repackaging milk products as cheeze and butter, etc. They have that mess left over and have conned the Americans into thinking whole milk is bad for you. You can drink too much water, you know, so be moderate. That skim milk can trigger acne in teens. It is hyped to be good for you. So I believe if people were getting the right vitamine in their milk, and whatever else our grandparents on back got, then they would not crave so much junk food. Also it would not hurt to pop a vitamin once in a while if you are too busy to eat properly.

      “your health depends on God”

So smoking doesn’t greatly increase your risk of lung cancer and heart disease, it’s all just a hoax? If I drink rat poison I won‘t die because what I eat doesn’t affect my health, right? When I get curable cancer I should just deny treatment because I can just pray it away, right? This is the 21st century, leave the demon possessions and bloodlettings at the door.

Apparently a good part of the country, then, don’t have half a brain judging from the obesity epidemic.

I will state right off that we should be able to eat what we want when we want with no legislation telling us what to eat. However, providing information is not a bad thing, and her wanting kids to understand good food vs. bad food does no harm. Too many parents today are too damn busy to feed their children proper and you can see it everywhere you go. Kids (and adults) who want to not be fat need to understand more what good nutrition is and how it plays a huge part in their lives, their longevity, their happiness, and yes, the cost of their health care at some point.

The last time the First Lady was on a Food Network show the distinct impression was given that all the vegetables used in the show came from the White House Garden when in fact many vegetables came from Whole Foods. This would have been a wonderful opportunity to support a corporation like Whole Foods but that did not fit the narrative that Mrs. Obama and the White House wanted to portray. From vegetables to National Security, this White House is willing to do anything somehow put themselves in a better light than the facts warrant . . .

I do not know about the show you are talking about thus I won’t comment as to its validity or lack thereof. However, is it not good to educate people on what is/is not good food? Nothing against Whole Foods, but I don’t know that the intent is to advertise for some corporation as opposed to helping people understand healthy eating habits. I don’t think those eating habits should be legislated or forced, but providing good information is a good thing.
There’s nothing with eating fast food and less than nutritious food, but to make a habit out of it, I think that does not do most people well. If they choose to not do well, then so be it — that’s their choice and they should be allowed that, but providing information for those that want to know it is a good thing.
