Midnight Email: Mitch Daniels Says No to Presidential Run in 2012

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels told supporters in a midnight email early Sunday that he is opting against a 2012 presidential run, a decision that he said ultimately came down to family concerns.
The decision by the former political operative and favorite of much of the GOP establishment will again roil the unsettled GOP field—and likely intensify efforts to convince another major candidate to join the race, such as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush or New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
The Daniels email, obtained by POLITICO, went out from Indiana GOP chief Eric Holcomb, a key Daniels adviser, soon after midnight, with the word “Urgent” in the subject line.
“The following is from Governor Mitch Daniels….” the email began.
“I hope this reaches you before the public news does,” Daniels wrote. “If so, please respect my confidence for the short time until I can make it known to all.”
He went on, “The counsel and encouragement I received from important citizens like you caused me to think very deeply about becoming a national candidate. In the end, I was able to resolve every competing consideration but one, but that, the interests and wishes of my family, is the most important consideration of all. If I have disappointed you, I will always be sorry.”
Mr. Daniels, a two-term governor who had worked the administrations of both George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, had often expressed concerns about the strains a national campaign would put on his wife and four adult daughters.
His decision to stay out of the race eliminates one of the last big Republicans still known to be eyeing a presidential campaign and rounds out a week that also saw two other well-known figures— Mike Huckabee and Donald Trump—take their names out of contention.
“If I have disappointed you, I will always be sorry,” Mr. Daniels wrote. “If you feel that this was a non-courageous or unpatriotic decision, I understand and will not attempt to persuade you otherwise. I only hope that you will accept my sincerity in the judgment I reached.”

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 6:10amIf you know the baggage that the Daniels carry as a couple, then it is easy to understand that, because of the rather scandalous gap in their first and second marriages to each other, either 1) he thought the scrutiny would destroy his family, 2) he didn’t think he could win, or 3) his wife said “No” and he accepted it. It may be unpatriotic to put yourself before your country, but it’s not unpatriotic to put your family before your country. Besides, considering that he took her back after she ran off with someone else, he obviously makes her and her wishes a priority–perhaps too much so.

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 8:45amThe whole idea that patriotism equates sacrifice is misleading, in my opinion. It takes someone with an immense ego who believes that they have something to offer the country as its leader. The job, while punishing, is rewarding. I think we look at everything a president gives up to run for the office and then run the country, but I think in reality that person wouldn’t do it if it were a sacrifice. In the case of Daniels, his team weighed out the mood of the GOP against his positions and realized he didn’t stand a chance.

Report Post »Herman Cain was a Governor for the Federal Reserve and said “there’s no need to audit the Federal Reserve”.
I hope you people know that the Federal Reserve is the central bank of America, and centralized banking is part of the Communist Manifesto. Karl Marx said centralized banking was the best way to redistribute wealth.
Herman Cain worked for these people and even Glenn Beck and Judge Napolitano said that the Federal Reserve(A Progressive idea signed into law by (D) Woodrow Wilson) is the Cancer of America.

Report Post »1.) Herman Cain is a Progressive-Lite.
Wrong. He is very conservative. If you truly researched him you’d know it. Some pundits consider him the most conservative in the race so far. Sadly, seems EVERYBODY is progressive lite to a RP supporter. Stuff I’ve been reading from RP supporters, are as nasty as what I read from the left. What’s up with that? I think it is fear, when courage is called for. It’s a good thing to debate who might be best, but fear mongering, without considering facts on both sides of issues is the far left mantra, not ours.
2.) Cain was Governor for the Fed Res.erve: Again, research. He was chairman of the Federal Res Bank of Kansas City. This does not make him a criminal or boogey man. It does make him informed.
3.) Said, “there’s no need to audit FED: Truth is, he said, it is not his top priority. Jobs & cutting taxes & ending Obamacare are. For single issue people, then that’s it. He said he won’t stand in the way if congress chooses to audit. RP heads that committee, let him do his job. Not even RP could pledge he’d end the Fed on his first day (A LA GITMO!) RP heads committee & Cain says he’s free to move forward.
You imply Cain a communist – I see you read Vox Day. That’s fine, but don’t stop there. Even conservatives can drink kool-aide, please get informed before sipping. There’s no problem not voting Cain — just decide based on research of all sides of issues. Open your mind.

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 5:57amAs far as I can tell, Hermann Cain is the only one that makes any sense at this stage of the game. He’s the only one that will take it to Obama. We need someone who is plain spoken, easy to understand, is likeable and not afraid to call out Obama on his anti -American socialist ways.
Report Post »seemsew
Posted on May 22, 2011 at 10:47amCain is one who could really take it to Obama because of the simple fact that he is black, and that one thing would be removed from the media who claim that Republicans are just racist pigs. I don’t think they would dare call him by some of the disrespectable names that many Liberals try to tack onto him. Removing the race factor would at least put them on more equal footing. Now, to get rid of Obama’s teleprompter.

As it stands none of these candidates believe they could beat Mitch Romney. I am encouraged that they continue to drop like flies now if we could just get Romney to drop maybe we could get a real conservative candidate to run. Personally I’m sick and tired of seeing the same old Washington establishment running. Believe it or not Ron Paul will be your next president. People are sick and tired of the establishment. There are things that I disagree with Mr. Paul but there are many many more that I do agree with. This is the County candidate we need on the conservative ticket. So the more Washington establishment candidates that drop the better

The Tea Party should pick up the slogan “No Rinos – No Way!”. Of course, this would be directed at Mitt Romney, who should really be running on the Democrat ticket. If Romney wins the GOP primary, we might all be better off letting Obama fulfill his dream of turning America into “USSR West”. Anyone who saw a recent video enumerating all of his achievements since becoming Governor would necessarily come away with the idea that this is a man who is gearing up to announce his candidacy for the 2012 Republican nomination. I knew, in my gut, that if he didn‘t run it would boil down to cowardice and I don’t feel much happiness in being proven right. It’s a case of yet another public servant admitting they lack the moral fortitude, even with all they know and have seen regarding the dire straits our nation–indeed, our entire world–is in, to screw their courage to the sticking place and carry on. If it’s any solace, I know he will be plagued by regret for the rest of his life–some of us are lucky enough to receive a call to monumental action in our lifetimes–a chance to define onesself as a true leader, a hero of epic proportions. When the call came, Daniels hid under the bed.

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 1:45pmI suspect Rick Perry to announce he’s running in August. Until then the field will languish. He’s already had run-ins with Obama and will make for good theater. He will ultimately win the election by a handy margin and take office in Jan ‘17. He’s got the smarmy good looks and demeanor of Romney, the success of the state of Texas behind him, and, most importantly, he’s not Obama. Palin i think will go for senate in AZ and win. I would like to see Bachman as his VP but things are still too murky on the VP picks and mostly likely it would be someone no one would suspect. Should end up with strong majorities in the house and senate as well. Should have very strong majority of governors and state houses. Look for a constitutional amendment or two. If we can’t get things done at that point you can kiss the country goodbye.
I think there are two major factions in the world battling it out. One leaves America at the center of it all, the other would shift power to a global power structure. One is bad, the other evil. I choose the bad one and I think they will be the ones to win since they have a pretty strong stranglehold and a power base going back centuries. You can fix bad, but evil must be destroyed. It’s gonna be an interesting ride.2016 is only the beginning we have a long and hard road ahead so don’t plan on relaxing after Obama is out. Momentum must be preserved. Allen West will be President one day when we need him. I think he’ll be a senator first.

Cain is a good man and would be a great president but he’s prone to making verbal gaffes with which the media would crucify him. AND, instead of taking away the race card it would simply elevate it and enhance it with the media beating the drum that Repubs only put him up there because he’s black. They put it out there that it’s a desperate ploy, they‘ll attack Cain’s lack of political experience, they’ll call him a sell out, an uncle tom, etc and sadly they would probably get away with it. I would hate to see Herman Cain treated this way though I think him a big enough man to take it. Bottom line, I don‘t think Cain is in the ’club’ so to speak so that pretty much takes him out of the running anyway.

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 5:17pmRidiculous comparison–George Washington didn’t have the internet, the media, and the Democratic Party Machine ready to destroy his life.
Mitch Daniels is a good, honorable, and decent man about whom most here know nothing. I am afraid for our country when I see two things: Obama in the White House, and Conservatives who are this uninformed and cruel. Reading through this list of comments has me even more fearful for the country than I already was. God help us; if you folks are the friends of Conservatism, we don’t even need enemies. The media could switch sides and we would still manage to lose in 2012, with the kind of thinking exhibited here.

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 9:24pm“The decision by the former political operative and favorite of much of the GOP establishment will again roil the unsettled GOP field—and likely intensify efforts to convince another major candidate to join the race, such as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush or New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.”
Christie would be a shoe-in for the presidency. But if the Republican leadership gets behind Jeb Bush then they might as well just give this next election to Obama. The world has had enough Bush presidents to last a lifetime.
