Mike Huckabee Blasts Critics of Todd Akin in Email: ‘Code Red’

Back during the Missouri primary, one of Todd Akin’s most fervent backers was former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. And apparently Huckabee is not going to back down, even in spite of Akin’s widely panned remarks on “legitimate rape” and pregnancy.

Huckabee has blasted out a fundraising email on Akin’s behalf, captured by the Washington Examiner, which slams Akin’s critics for selling out social conservatives and leaving behind a soldier on the battlefield. It‘s the kind of email you don’t expect to see from a man who’s generally viewed as a moderate force in the Republican party. Excepts follow:

The Party’s leaders have for reasons that aren’t rational, left him behind on the political battlefield, wounded and bleeding, a casualty of his self-inflicted, but not intentional wound. In a Party that supposedly stands for life, it was tragic to see the carefully orchestrated and systematic attack on a fellow Republican. Not for a moral failure or corruption or a criminal act, but for a misstatement which he contritely and utterly repudiated. I was shocked by GOP leaders and elected officials who rushed so quickly to end the political life of a candidate over a mistaken comment in an interview. This was a serious mistake, but it was blown out of proportion not by the left, but by Akin’s own Republican Party. Is this what the party really thinks of principled pro-life advocates? Do we forgive and forget the verbal gaffes of Republicans who are “conveniently pro-life” for political advantage, but crucify one who truly believes that every life is sacred?

Who ordered this “Code Red” on Akin? There were talking point memos sent from the National Republican Senatorial Committee suggesting language to urge Akin to drop out. Political consultants were ordered to stay away from Akin or lose future business with GOP committees. Operatives were recruited to set up a network of pastors to call Akin to urge him to get out. Money has changed hands to push him off the plank. It is disgraceful. From the spotlights of political offices and media perches, it may appear that the demand for Akin’s head is universal in the party. I assure you it is not. There is a vast, but mostly quiet army of people who have an innate sense of fairness and don’t like to see a fellow political pilgrim bullied. If Todd Akin loses the Senate seat, I will not blame Todd Akin. He made his mistake, but was man enough to admit it and apologize. I’m waiting for the apology from whoever the genius was on the high pedestals of our party who thought it wise to not only shoot our wounded, but run over him with tanks and trucks and then feed his body to the liberal wolves. It wasn’t just Todd Akin that was treated with contempt by the thinly veiled attack on Todd Akin. It was all the people who have faithfully knocked doors, made calls, and made sacrificial contributions to elect Republicans because we thought we were welcome in the party. Todd Akin owned his mistake. Who will step up and admit the effort being made to discredit Akin and apologize for the sleazy way it’s been handled?[...]

I’ve heard the talk of new deadlines and the nonsense about the Republican Party running a 3rd party candidate, but I am no longer listening to that noise. The idea that our Party would continue to play games behind the scenes and feed the Democrats make-believe narrative of the GOP’s fictional war on women is equally ridiculous. Now is the time to focus on electing a conservative Senate Majority. And if the NRSC and RNC and the money-rich PACS won’t help Todd Akin get us to the majority, then we’ll do it without them. And his seat will not have been sold to the highest bidder, but obtained by the highest principles.

Huckabee’s passionate defense is certainly a powerful act of political theater. However, many conservative observers have already mocked it for being disingenuous. From Allahpundit at Hot Air:

Akin’s first defensive move after people tried to get him to quit was to frame this as a “conservatives vs. liberal elite media” fight. Since his main “liberal media” tormentor was Sean Hannity, that didn’t work. So then he tried to make it a “grassroots conservatives vs. party bosses” thing. That didn’t work either once the Tea Party Express called on him to quit. Now here comes the “social conservatives vs. RINO moderates” pitch. From the man who endorsed David Dewhurst in Texas.

That’s going to leave a mark.

The long and short of it is that, in spite of Huckabee’s high-flown rhetoric, his critics are likely to remain unimpressed. The Arkansas governor has a record of marrying moderation on most issues to hardline social conservatism – a mix that is increasingly unwelcome in a Tea Party-centered GOP. His openly disdainful attitude toward libertarians hardly helps the situation.

Granted, the former Arkansas Governor still has a decent amount of reach due to his perch at Fox News, but as to whether it will be enough to save Todd Akin from the condemnation of his entire party? That may be less likely.

I have yet to hear anyone say specifically what they find objectionable in Akin’s statement. Is it the word legitimate attached to “rape.” Could have been better said, but in fact, there are illigitimate rape charges from time to time. Is it the whole thing about a woman’s body shutting down the pregnancy? Well ok, the guy’s not a scientist. He has appolgoized for that part of the statement. If it is the idea that rape should not be an exception used as excuse to kill an innocent baby, well that’s where the geek chorus and I part company. I applaud Akin’s stand in defense of the right to life for the baby. In cases like this what is called for is support and comfort for the mother, life and nurturing for the innocent child, and the harshest of punishments meted out swiftly to the rapist. It’s a little thing we like to call JUSTICE! It is really quite simple to a society that has any moral bearings whatsoever.

      It’s quite simple
      1) A rape can cause pregnancy.
      2) NO woman should be force to bear her attacker’s child.

The real issue here is why do the R party leaders allow Missouri to have open primaries, and no run-off (or any state for that matter). This situation is the result not only of Akin’s foot-in-mouth, but from the tender-box environment created by 3 or more candidates in the primary and the winner (Akin) only won by plurality, not majority. This leaves a majority of people in the party without the guy they voted for (and not happy), so the knives come out at the first opportunity. If there had been a run off, it is likely that a coalition would have formed around him or one of his opponents, and if he had still won, much less likely for the long knives scenario we see now.

It’s too late to take him off the ballot, so this continual cry him him to step down is pointless. The R’s have to figure out how to win now, in this reality, or they hand it to McCaskill.

I agree with Akins original statement and believe it could actually be mathematically proved.

Hypothesis: Pregnancy rarely the result of “legitimate rape”.

      woman sexually active: 50 yrs
woman sex: 100 per year avg
      Total 5000
      Pregnancies 2
      Chance of pregnancy .04%

if a woman could get pregnant with every sexual encounter; however out of the 100 per year she can only get pregnant due to ovulation maybe 1/3; then, throw in birth control, stress, erectial dysfunction, etc… menopause needs to be factored for the last 20 years.

Partial Summary: pregnancy rarely results from sex!

1 out 4 woman raped or molested, whereas more are molested rather than actually raped, and many would not qualify under the terms “Legitimate Rape”

“legitimate rape” those reported to law enforcement resulting in the collection of evidence including hospital exam, at which time birth control is discussed and victims are offered “Morning after pill”

Results: most rarest than rarely: if at all for pregnancy occuring due to “Legitmate rape”

Now, scientifically, a woman possibly having some kind of hormonal stress response to disrupt or annilate implantation as an internal defense mechanism wouldn’t surprise me. I am sure it isn’t something studied but just think of the hormonal imbalances stress cause woman (rape definitely is stressful).

John 3:16 – If you don’t recognize Mike Huckabee as a progressive Republican (aka RINO) there is little that anyone can say to you that will change your opinion. While I admire and share the passion you have for defending the right to life, I have to ask you be cautious with who you entrust to defend your principles. Huckabee may have worn a preachers collar, but he’s still a progressive and cannot be trusted. He will let you down at some point in the future and your comments about feeling betrayed will hit a lot closer to home.

The RNC, NRSC and people the likes of Hannity have been doing this crap for years. Way back when Patty Murray first ran in Washington, the goofies that run the RNC decided her opposition wasn’t worthy of support. What happened was a long string of leftist junk from Washington state. They did the same thing to Sharon Staple (NV) and Christine O’Donnell (DE). I am so sick of the Hierarchy of the Party deciding their “choice”. Clinton, Obama and the rest of the left can say whatever they want with NO retribution, but “Woe be unto you scribes and Pharisees” if you are a Republican that they don’t approve of for whatever reason. @John & Toilet: Really? #1 this has nothing to do with his pro-life stance. I agree with him 100% on the issue as do Ryan, Rush, Beck, Coulter, et al. That is not exactly a list of RINOs. That’s absurd. This is about a candidate who wasn’t prepared to answer an obvious question revolving around the center piece issue for the progressive left this election cycle. That’s incompetence and people are fired everyday for incompetence. #2 Huckabee is the biggest of the big RINOs outside of the elected ranks. He was who the Obama administration publicly state they WANTED to run against because it would be McCain part 2. #3 On critical issues to the conservative movement such as being pro-live, you need to have eloquent spokes people. A failure to do so fails to acknowledge that the media is against us to begin with and will do their best to make even the most fluid spokesperson look bad so putting someone as clumsy and ignorant as Akin out there is nothing more then accepting defeat in advance. You would rather die on principle rather than fight for one and I don’t want to be a part of it.

      @VTPatriot:
Yes, the definition of “human life” is tricky and fraught with moral dilemmas. You see abortion on demand as leading down the road to slavery, eugenics and genocide. I see it as a regrettable but sometimes necessary choice that a woman has to make, alone or in consultation with her doctor. When you set up legal hoops for her to jump through before making that choice, you are treating her like a child. When–as will inevitably happen if the right-to-life movement gains momentum–you ban abortion altogether, you are on the road to 24/7 state surveillance of her pregnancy if she shows the slightest sign of wanting to terminate it.

What is wrong with the Republican party?

Claire McCaskill is a devoted follower of Obama. She damn near worships the guy. Her actions have been lock step with his actions.

So Todd Akin misspoke. He acknowledged his error. He/she who has never misspoke cast the first stone. Hell, Obama told every hard working American the other day that any success they have encountered in the economy was due to government support, not their own sacrifices, education, initiative, risk taking, etc.. What a crock!

If our vote and support is more influenced by words than actions (I always thought that actions spoke louder than words), we deserve ever ill that comes upon us. We should be upping our game against Senator McCaskill and not retreating on Todd Akin with the hope that we will win that Senate seat without our support.

Boozman lost by 12 points. Then he lucked out. Gov. Mike Huckabee, a friend and political ally for many years, put Boozman in charge of the Arkansas Department of Health.”

Without disparaging any other opinions, I support Todd Akins. I have stated on other forums that Akins did not address this correctly and along with Huckabee, agree that he shot himself in the foot.
But the RNC, who is alleging to be Pro Life on its platform immediately left him wounded and withdrew all support. They may as well have shot him in the head because he was wounded. They did this to make themselves look good for political reasons. But here is one question I have had to anyone willing to answer it. Are all crimes legitimate, just because they are reported? I will say no simply because of human nature. People will report crimes for a myriad of reasons, sometimes destroying the lives of their objectives. Another point I cannot support Akin on is the body shutting down to prevent pregnancy. That was a talking point that started in the 1980‘s and just isn’t true.
Rape is an ugly destructive, crime of power that has lingering life long effects and needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

No scientist, or student of biology, thinks that the female body has a defense mechanism to prevent pregnancy. You will find no scientific data to support that claim. bULL sHIRT, Piehole.

Ask any young couple trying to get pregnant. It’s a difficult and delicate process. Ask any Pediatrician about the factors that cause fertilization problems. It’s not an easy process.

Stress – of any kind (emotional, physical, mental, dietary. etc.) make it far more difficult. That’s why so many couples – after trying unsuccessfully for years – suddenly get pregnant right after they STOP trying.

The physical, mental and emotional trauma of a violent rape takes a terrible toll on the victim, and the likelihood of fertilization from a single instance of rape is sharply diminished. THAT is the reality you far left ideologues are so intent on pretending does not exist.

I’ve seen only TWO (count them – one, two) supposed studies on the issue supporting your claim, and BOTH are so seriously flawed they are laughable. One even concludes that, in some supernatural way, rape DOUBLES the likelihood of fertilization! Anyone, even a lay person, who buys that without questioning, has no functioning brain at all.

The fact the king of the RINOs – Mike Huckabee – endorsed him to begin with should have been the first warning sign about voting for Akin in the first place. My impression of Mike Huckabee has always been one of a snake oil salesmen/used car salesmen with a vain streak. Now that vanity is reinforcing the vanity of Akin and that could have disastrous results. In short Huckabee needs to get out of the way and not be at the center of another Presidential Election train wreck (see the collusion with McCain in 2008 WVU caucus). He‘s a progressive and as far as I’m concerned is in line with the left’s efforts to prevent the restoration of our Constitutional Republic.

And now a message to those of you who are arguing this is about him being pro-life: you are wrong. This is about him being completely uninformed/unprepared to eloquently and succinctly address an issue EVERYONE with half a brain knows the progressives are going to be pushing until the cows come home given the bogus war on women narrative. The bogus war on women has been center piece of nearly every counter punch the progressives have thrown when they have found themselves on the defensive this year and you can count on it being that way thru November. If he has denied the use of drugs then I am happy to be corrected, but I have not heard him say so.

Really, the only point worth addressing here is #1. The rest superfluous. It wasn’t the “hint of a gaffe” it was incompetence in his job as a candidate and people are fired everyday for incompetence. He could not address an issue that is obviously the center piece of the progressive left’s campaign strategy in an eloquent and succinct fashion. He’s finished as a candidate and it has nothing to do with Fox News, but rather only his own incompetence.

      VT Pat:

I agree his phraseology was clumsy. On that we agree.

      HOWEVER:

      1. There seems more evidence he is right about fertiliuzation rates decreased when violent rape has happened;

      2. He is CERTAINLY correct that a large number of rape claims are false (to cover up ‘inconvenient’ consensual sex, such as a teenage kid, a married woman, etc.) and that we should not treat THESE instances as we do acts of violent (“real”) rape

      3. The lack of cajones by the GOP establishment – running like little school girls at the hint of a problem – is disgusting. Worse – the Karl Roves of the GOP, who feel themselves owners of the Republican electorate and empowered to TELL everyone how they MUST vote …. and willing to destroy an elected candidate if the voters do not comply …. is far worse than disgusting.

I agree with Mike Huchabee. I too was angry when I heard what Todd Akins said but I didn’t get on TV and act like some big blabbermouth by telling everyone in the universe how angry I was. We have a bunch of Republican big dogs like Karl Rove that try to control the narrative on what little conservative media that we have. Ann Coulter went so far as to say that she “hated” Todd Akin. She put her dirty laundry out for everybody to see. These are our east coast RINO Republicans that dislike pro life flyover people in general and Todd Akin specifically. These RINO’s control the conservative narrative on the media and they know it. They make a lot of money doing it. They think that they rule the roost and that we are second class because of our “old fashioned” Christian beliefs but they have one little problem…they need our vote. I suggest that they get off their high horse and remember that. We are not political consultants. We are voters. I will vote for Todd Akin or whatever Republican is on the ticket who will vote against Obamacare (McCaskill has voted for Obamacare and has her nose up Obama’s rear end). We need to keep our eye on the ball. We allow the crazy media to move us all over the place.

      1. Show me the evidence. I have heard of two studies sited throughout this: 1 from the 70s and 1 from the 90s. As it turned out, the one from the 90s turned out to be simply relying on what was said in the 70s so its as just as invalid of conclusion as the one in the 70s. If the evidence exists, the good Congressmen should be waving that up and down in front of every camera he can find, but he‘s not so I’m skeptical.
      2. Saying the human conception process is a fragile one does not equate to the female having the capacity to naturally prevent it from happening without abstaining from sexual activity. The probability of conception is low to begin with and carrying to term is even lower. Once upon a time in college I had biology major tell me 2/3 of pregnancies end in miscarriage and most are never detected because it appears to be the woman’s normal cycle. I’ve never fact checked that but based on the personal experience of wife and I, I‘m inclined to think it’s accurate. All that to say while the end results may appear to be similar, you have got the cause and effect relationship wrong.

      3. If Akin was correct, wives who are physically abused by their husbands have very few children assuming their stress level is likely thru the room when having sex with their husbands. Not the case so let’s move along.

      4. Understanding the media is against you is critical for conservative to be successful. Akin’s incompetence demonstrates he does not

Should Akin drop out or not is not the point folks. And yes I think he should step down.

The point is the Republican world tried to gain political points by crucifying Akin over this cosmic gaffe. They really could care less about the content of the situation. These points are meaningless as the media, libs, moderates will still associate them with Akin no matter what the Repubs say or do.

I’m not over familar with this story but my limited understanding is Akins was told by a “Dr” a woman’s body was designed to “shut down” as to not receive the sperm in a rape situation?? Isn’t the real point Akins was trying to make is that all human life is important and valuable to God regardless as to how they were conceived. So he made a mistake.. had his facts wrong.. the basis of the point he was making is as valid today as it has been since the creation of man. How can you legitimately argue with that fact. I’m just sayin..

He didn’t “get this one wrong” – it seems he is, mostly, right. Getting pregnant is not easy (ask any young couple). The physical, emotional and mental trauma of a violent rape makes fertilization – while not impossible – far less likely. THIS is what Akin was saying.

Sorry, Mike… his statement weren‘t just ’baed on old data.’ They fly in the face of current facts and frankly, of logic.

And then he answered critics with the statement that he would continue to run as ‘polls showed he was still ahead.’

Not, ‘i have reviewed current literature and i am horrified at how misinformed i was.’ Not, ‘i am taking a rape sensitivity training course, to better understand how offensive my comments might have been to victims of this terrible crime.’

In short, his response was not intelligent or empathetic… He refused to denounce the intent and belief underlying his statement. He cannot be allowed to go forth as an annointed Republican candidate, if we hope to have the moral high ground and expect (rightly) dems to drop when they behave badly.

I am horrified at the abortion statistics in this country… I am angered that my tax dollars are funding perople’s irresponsible choices and yes, ‘mistakes’ instead of their own funds. THAT, however, is as far as I believe the GOP should be carrying this plank. The ONLY issue we should be pushing is for SMALLER GOVERNMENT. Any governmental intrusion for or against is more government than we need. Fight abortion by spreading stronger morals/ beliefs. And fight ignorance by punishing those who would try to lead but not only are not informed, but also refuse to be contrite and corrective when caught out.

Some women use rape as a tool for revenge. Rape is bad and a “legitimate rape” the perpetrator when convicted should be executed. On the other hand if a woman accuses rape and it’s proven false she should be jailed for many years like the duke lacrosse case for instance. If that happened the rape rate and the false accusation rate would go way down.

    Gov. Huckabee,
You are missing a few points that I would like to point out.
    1. Todd Akin was not really selected by the majority of conservative Missourians. Todd only made it because of Claire McCaskill’s funding of some commercials and the democratic fence jumpers in the primary. John Brunner was the true conservative choice.
I, as well as many of my conservative Missourians are tired of the lifers in Washington. Todd has been there 12 years. He served his time and has the respect of myself as well as many others here.
    2. If Todd was a true statesman or patriot and truly concerned for the overall cause, he would have bowed out gracefully after his poor choice in words. This was a test of whether he would go down as a patriot or be judged as just another politician. A “politician” only cares about himself and not the good of the people he is suppose to represent.
If he stays in and wins or looses I guaranty he won’t be remembered for the good he did in his 12 years as state represetative. He will be remembered as just another selfish politician!

What it comes down to is that Akin is a Tea-Party Candidate, and a lot of Republicans still don’t consider them a part of the party, especially in a case like this where the Tea-Party candidate beat the Republican old-school candidate in the primary. It is almost as if the Republican party is saying, “Look, we appreciate what the B-team did for us two years ago, but now it’s time for the varsity squad to go in.” The ticket in November shows that as well, the old-school Republican is running for President and the Tea-Party candidate is running for Vice-President. I think the party needs alone time with itself, before it tears apart.
