Military Investigating Gay Pride Flag That Was Allegedly Raised on U.S. Military Base In Afghanistan

Controversial photos of a soldier appearing to raise a gay pride flag on a U.S. base in Afghanistan have emerged. As can be imagined, the images are creating quite a stir.
Last year, the military rescinded its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. While the move was praised by gay rights activists, some held to the notion that the law was a solid protective force that should have remained in place. As The Blaze has extensively reported, U.S. military academies are now opening themselves up for gay pride events and other celebratory activities that weren’t possible under the former DADT policies.
According to FOX News’ Todd Starnes, the military is currently investigating the pictures, which have drawn the ire of critics and the praise of gay rights advocates. At this point, the origins of the photos, the soldier presented in them and the overall authenticity have not yet been verified. However, it is known that they were originally posted on the “Wipeout Homophobia on Facebook” social media page.
The controversial pictures were apparently posted by a woman named Nicole Jodice; she uploaded at least one of the pictures along with a note praising the individual raising the flag (her comment claims that the man is her husband).
“Hubbie in Afghanistan raising a gay pride flag,” she reportedly wrote. Then, she linked back to her personal page, which included additional images of the flag raising.
“We are aware of the photo of the gay pride flag being flown by U.S. service members and we are investigating,” explained a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force.
With an investigation underway, the president of the conservative Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, is less than content with the flag’s alleged presence on a military base in the Middle Eastern country.
“There, in the dusty desert of war, an Army outpost saluted the colors of the homosexual lobby by flying a rainbow flag in place of Old Glory,” he said. “These displays are an uncomfortable reminder of the open policy that few of the troops support.”
This policy, of course, is DADT. Perkins also went on to state his fears that the flag, like the Koran burning last month, could place U.S. troops in increased danger.
On The Maddow Blog, Steve Benen took Perkins to task, writing:
Thanks to the extraordinary progress on gay rights in the U.S. military in recent years, images that were once hard to imagine are now becoming more common. [...]
I’m curious: since when does Tony Perkins think we should appease the cultural beliefs of Afghan Muslims? Some of these same Afghans might vehemently oppose the ongoing presence of U.S. troops in their country, too. Does the Family Research Council think we should avoid flying the American flag out of fear this might offend them?
Or is it more likely Perkins doesn‘t want to see a gay pride flag in Afghanistan or anywhere else because he doesn’t like gay people?

The raising of the American flag marks the ownership of the land beneath said flag. In the case of the wars in Aghanistan and Iraq, American flags were not, and should not be flown; even over American military bases. This is because we are not claiming foreign land in the name of our nation. When I was in Iraq, they would allow us to fly a flag for mere seconds at night so that we could have a flag that was certified to be flown over the base. However, flying a flag on foreign soil is ignorant and arrogant unless the land upon which it is flown is to be considered US territory such as is the case at a U.S. Embassy.
Now, with that stated, there is no gay nation to my knowledge and to fly the gay flag over a foreign nation is nothing more than a idiotic move by some zealot of the homosexual cause that will cause our men and women dedicated to a war that should have never been fought to face ever increasing resistance and violence.
Now, I would say leave it to the Army to do some crap like this, but I cannot rightly determine what uniform is being worn because the picture is low quality and the service member looks like he hasn’t washed his cammies in a couple weeks. I was looking for the Army’s essential pen holders on the left sleeve, but that part of the uniform is pointing away.

If I may be so bold, speeking as a current member to the U.S. Army Reserve and a combat vet I personally don’t like gay people, I find them and their lifestyle to be disgusting and an affront to God and I defiantly don’t want to see their sicco flag. And as an American citizen I am offended to see it fly over an installation which represents this country and it’s military in a combat zone. It is surely in violation of the UCMJ and those responsible should be made an example of. It’s only fair because if I were to show up in uniform to protest one of their sicco rallies I would certainly be prosecuted. This person acts as though there is something wrong with not wanting these people in such close quarters as the military requires. While not ever having a problem with the never ending bashing of anyone who thinks differently then they do. I have some news for the gay population you should take a long look in the mirror and realize that you are the hypocrites, when it comes to not accepting the beliefs of others you have got the lead.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 8:48am@THOP DADT did reduce the effectiveness of the military in a number of ways. First, it discouraged capable, patriotic gays and lesbians from joining the military. Second, it it forced the military to discharge capable gay and lesbian service-members regardless of the importance of their position or whether their skills were replaceable. A good example of this would be after 911 when we were scrambling to find Arabic-language interpreters but had to let some go because they were gay.
It’s hard enough for the military to find new recruits right now without discouraging a group of people from serving without cause.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 7:56amThere was a legitimate reason that the military excluded gays and a legitimate reason that they enforced a don’t ask, don’t tell rule when it was apparent that gays did exist in the military. There is no room for social activism of any sort in the military.
