It’s on. Forget about 8/28. And don’t bother with 10/2. Really, don’t bother. Jon Stewart is ready to “rally against extremism” on 10.30.10:
He plans to stage a rally in Washington to counter what he identified as extremists on either side of the political spectrum.
The New York Times explains the mission of the march:
“To counter what he called a minority of 15 percent or 20 percent of the country who have dominated the national political discussion with extreme rhetoric. He tarred both parties with that charge, mentioning both the attacks on the right against President Obama for being everything from a socialist to un-American and on the left against former President Bush for being a war criminal.
| The Daily Show With Jon Stewart | Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c | |||
| Rally to Restore Sanity | ||||
|
||||
They already have a Facebook page of course:
I did note the first post on the wall when I got to the page:
An additional twist to the events on 10.30.10 — Stewart’s Comedy Central counterpart Stephen Colbert will be holding something of a counter rally with a different theme:
| The Colbert Report | Mon – Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c | |||
| March to Keep Fear Alive | ||||
|
||||
FYI — the “Don’t Click Here” button on each event website simply takes you to the website of the other event.
So what will happen? That’s a little unclear:
Mr. Stewart offered few details. He said it would be “two or three hours one sat for some nice people to get together for some fun.”

Submitting your tip... please wait!

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 2:36am….you do realize it was DEMOCRATS fighting to KEEP slavery and REPUBLICANS fighting and dying to end it?
Democrats also supported Jim Crow laws of separation. Republicans opposed them and defeated them.
Democrats started the KKK and publicly supported them. Republicans risked their lives standing against the KKK and fighting them to the darkest corners of existence.
Democrats stood against the Civil Rights movement. They smeared Republican Civil Rights leader MLK viciously. Democrats filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Democrats have 150 year history of racism. You DO NOT get to rewrite history and paint yourselves as champions of civil rights. Your history speaks for itself.

Which one of your college professors taught you that word? Was it your professor in feminist women’s studies? Posted on September 18, 2010 at 12:03amThis issue is less about democrats and republicans and more about regional attitudes. Southern Democrats and Southern Republicans both voted against the civil rights act of 1964 as you can see here:
The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7%–93%)
Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0%–100%)
Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%–6%)
Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%–15%)
The Senate version:
Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5%–95%)
Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0%–100%)
Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%–2%)
Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%–16%)
The thing is that after that vote, there was a bit of turmoil in the parties, and both of them basically split and reorganized. The southern democrats joined the republican party, and the northern republicans went to the democratic party. It is shortsighted to look at the history of republicans or democrats and think that these parties are static and haven’t changed over half a century.

So the segregationists didn’t join the Republicans around 1968? That confuses me because I seem to see lots of Confederate flags at Republican events. Did they stay in the Democrats because they loved feminism, gay rights and abortion so much? Or, perhaps, they all took a cruise ship to the Bermuda Triangle, never to be seen again…
But, seriously, if I’m wrong about it, could someone please explain it to me?

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 1:47amWay to go Jon,
I can’t wait to see who your guest speakers will be. I am sure your buddy Bill Maher will be there to tell the crowd how stupid they are if they think for themselves. I sure he’ll also do his “there is no God jokes” How about handing out spray paint to cross out any place where the word God appears on the monuments.
You got to have Michael Moore. He can bring everyone up to date on the Cuban economy.
The Progressives are desperate. They must not have much confidence in BIG ED so they are going to try pulling this thing off by November.

Lets fear gays, immigrants, socialists, tea-partiers, and muslims to the point where they are locked in cages and stripped of their rights….
This is much better right?? This is more effective?
All this does is fan the flames. The same type of crap the Hitler used to rally Germany to hate and murder Jews. You take an ignorant and impressionable mass and bend them to your will with fear and hatred of those different to you.
This rally speaks to rational humans. This rally speaks to me. You may think its a joke but its DEAD SERIOUS. I am sick of the way this country is going. I lean right but am open to left ideals. I dont shout conspiracies and hatred. Believe me, there are plenty of people out there that feel the same that see this country going down the tubes with the likes of Beck, Hannity, Michael Moore, and whats his name on MSNBC.

Amen. I’m pretty squarely on the Left, but I’ll be the first to admit Michael Moore is a dishonest propagandist. I like Keith Olbermann, but when he calls people “teabaggers,” it’s just sleazy. It doesn’t cost you anything to give people dignity.

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 1:16amUnlike the 8/28 rally and what I expect the 10/2/10 rally, these competing rallies will have as their central theme humor, with no real principle or idea to rally around. It is going to take more than an extended “Daily Show Live” event to cause any significant number of people to attend. A casual bus ride from a neighboring state will cost $60-75, longer distances will require people to arrange time off from work to attend.
Glenn had large numbers attend from out of state, the labor rally will likewise have many bused in from out of state, but I don’t expect many from outside the DC Metro area to make the investment in time and money to attend. The tip-off will be hotel room availability on that weekend.
People will travel a great distance for a message they believe in, but I don’t think any real number will travel to hear jokes…
I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 12:13pmThe thing is, this message is more important than any self-righteous message Beck or Palin had at theirs. I sit down and watch TV and see our country falling apart with all this partisan bickering. No matter what one party does the other will disagree for political reasons. I see stupidity in people calling Bush or Obama – Hitler. And morons who post here like the “Iatoala” with Obama’s picture. Enough is enough. This is killing our country more than ANYTHING. Your posts here only prove that even more. Riling up ignorant and impressionable masses like Nazi Germany into believing outrageous falsities. I am all for restoring sanity. Restoring civil discourse. Its more important to our country than Beck‘s return to god and our founding father’s ideals as if they were saints.

Posted on September 18, 2010 at 8:27pmThe proof will be in the number of port-a-potties ordered for this event. LOL! With both the 10/3 and the 10/30 rallies being so close together, it will be difficult for even the unions trying to organize busses for both events on such short time period.
I believe Glenn started planning his rally a year in advance and it showed. Everything was in its place and all who attended recognize such a well organized event. On the other hand, we witness Al Sharpton’s handlers trying to set up for his rally the night before 8/28 on the mall near the Smithsonians. It was very chaotic and it showed that night.
I believe these two comedians and Ed S. bit off more than they could chew. They might be on TV; however, I believe they don’t have a clue on how much an event like this costs. Since they had a late start, and no fund-raising in sight, most of the costs will come out of their pockets (or George Soros). Also, it is easy to put up graphic posters, but the hard part is all the details behind the scene. I wish them well. Jon Stewart will probably will pull in a nice crowd, but they might become an angry crowd if he doesn’t supply them w/ port-a-potties! LOL!

Spending us into an unrecoverable debt.
Lack of concise leadership.

Exactly what social programs has Obama expanded at historical rate? Just curious. You seem to forget that Congress votes on the bills – and as for the advisors — have you read any of their writings? Most of their writing are from in the 60′s – don’t you think these people have moderated some of their views in 40+ years? O’Donnell has a lot of very extremist views from 20 years ago and she says she has matured on her positions during that time. Don’t you think it could work the other way around?
By the way, your fearless leader Mr Beck has stolen every bit of his ideas and thinking from Alex Jones. Everything that supposedly Beck is say and teaching, Jones has been ranting about for years. I would think more of Glenn if his thinking had been original but sorry, its not!!

My guess is that there are many Americans who took the oath in the past week who are more “real” of an American than you are.

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 1:20amGlenn spent over $4M on his rally, who will underwrite this Faux Rally? A major corporation? Donations? This will be a very minor event – no jumbotrons, few port a-johns, and security will be a nightmare (think mid-eighties Who concert). I think Jon Stewart & Co are in over their heads…

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 5:09amDon’t kid yourself! The unions will force their members to go. They will pay to have them bussed in, pay for hotels, etc. Our tax dollars are at work via the “stimulus package”.
The Socialists will need 1,000 people to pull this off, whereas Glenn Beck did it on his own. Glenn Beck is to be admired!

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 11:42amThe sad thing is you automatically knock it as a left wing thing. Can you not see the actual message? TONE IT THE F DOWN. Enough of the crap of Bush being a war criminal and obama a socialist nazi… Lets just get things done. For god’s sake. You people never cease to amaze me. I hate being conservative among the likes of all of you. I honestly just wish all the right left bickering will end and I hate that i cant get real news from either Fox or MSNBC. This rally is not pandering to any side as you can see from what hes saying – simply, enough overeacting over every little thing and partisan bickering and just get things done. Leave it to Fox and you cronies to compare attendance instead of the actual message

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 12:31amMY Lord! How scared really are these people of the TEA Party? I think Mr. Stewart will get about 5 people to join him. From what I can see of the 10/2/ rally maybe 15. Try as they might neither one of them will get as many people as Glenn did to their rallies. All they will accomplish in the end is to show how nobody stands with them.

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 12:44amin addition to showing who doesn’t stand with them….imagine the humiliation they will face with the media behind them, the turnout, and then the actions of those they attract. Maybe they will show their true colors…I can only hope.

Quote: we’ll provide signs like “I’m not afraid of Muslims, Tea Partiers, socialists, immigrants gun owners or gays, but I am kind of scared of spiders.” – he made references to not calling Bush a war criminal etc not just about not calling Obama a socialist nazi. The point is TONE IT THE F DOWN. What is it you dont get? How ignorant are you? seriously. And of course right wing pundits will compare attendance to GB’s rally as if that were the point rather than the actual message. For god sakes hes saying “come if you can make it” not promoting it like the 2nd coming of Christ like GB did with his. And for the record, I lean right but have some liberal views and i can not stand the way Fox and MSNBC pander as well as our politicians fighting rational legislation b/c it didnt come from their party. It sickens me. I am part of that 80% that just wants to see things get done. If your going to change something. fine. lets try it out. If it doesnt work, we elect a new congress/president to change it period. Things work if everyone works together and give it a shot. But I doubt you can comprehend any of this as you are probably too stubborn and ignorant. sad…

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 5:54amEnvy is one of the seven deadly sins. Beck points out constantly that he is not a journalist. He is an entertainer that has become an opinionist. He also is a great teacher and backs his opinions up with videos and books!! The Tea Party and WE THE PEOPLE are seperate from Beck,Limbaugh, the dems,the repubs,Stewart,Colbert and the “Government Stupid” Everyone knows in EVERY election that it is the independants and center that matters. Why is it that so many Tea Party candidates are winning over established CAREER POLITICIANS. The masses of people that let apathy set in are up and awake. WE THE PEOPLE want change and NOT the kind like the “Speech Giver” snake oil salesman won on. It is from POLITICIANS that are exactly like him. The Liers and will never give you a straight answer types.Crist is another ggod example. I am not going to win my primary so I will jump ship!! Lack of Character, oh wasn’t that what Beck has been talking about. Stewert through’s the F bomb out ever other word. hey I do to but NOT in public!!

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 12:25pmLol Jon Stewart does not need and has never needed GB. GB merely provides easy fodder for him because Glenn is such a paranoid, overeactive, fear-mongering, self-righteous hypocrite. Yes I said it. All Glenn and Hannity and the like do is fan the flames. Criticize any opposing thought. The mockery was Beck thinking his rally was even a fraction as significant as MLK’s. The mockery is the crap coming out of these pundits mouths. The mockery are the ignorant and impressionable masses who come with Hitler signs. Enough is enough. I can not stand to be conservative anymore knowing these people are my peers. Rational discourse. That is what we need. Thats what this rally is about. No more right or left wing pandering. More power to you Stewart. Enough is enough.

Posted on September 17, 2010 at 7:27pmAmassiac – You obviously have not watched Glenn Beck, and while you may think you are conservative, you are far from it if you watch the Daily Show and agree with Stewart. You say Jon is going to unite people by not taking sides – his program thrives on bashing the conservative viewpoint while seemingly ignoring anything happening on the left on the left. I challenge you to watch Beck’s program for two weeks and shut Jon off for that time period… then go back to life as usual and see what your views are then of who is the one spewing hatred and fear. Just because Jon disguises his hate behind punchlines doesn’t make it ok.

Posted on September 18, 2010 at 10:28amBut, here’s the thing. Yeah, Jon & Colbert are making fun of the 8/28 rally, YET, I think one of the things 8/28 demonstrated, without explicity stating it, is that people DO want a “return to sanity” in this country–meaning a government that serves WE THE PEOPLE as it was intended to do. So, while it is making fun of Glenn & 8/28, I think, in a “backhanded” way, it still supports the idea that the system is effed up & needs a reboot–seriously, wouldn’t most of us agree that BOTH parties are guilty of contributing to this current crisis, AND both use some pretty extreme rhetoric at times? Just my opinion, but hey, these guys ARE comedians, after all.

Posted on September 19, 2010 at 12:45amI think the old saying was “America was going to give the Republicans control of the House of Representatives and then Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert held a rally that was 5 times larger than Glen Beck‘s and America realized that the only way to make the Tea Party go away was to reject it’s Ultra-Extreme Ideology and reelect Democrats who, yeah, only managed to pass two fairly progressive Congressional Acts in the two years that they controlled everything but it’s a lot better than what the Republicans could muster up, since that party is only a Lion, a Tin Man and a Scarecrow (that is, Cowardly, Heartless and Flammable). As much as everyone is expecting the Republicans (ie; the Tea Party) to take over the House, I think this will jump start Sanity and make us (the 60%+ of reasonable Americans that will start to pay attention around October 1st-ish) realize that a vote for the Tea Party is a vote for anarchy and thus, a vote for more economic uncertainty.” Eat that Moderate/Liberal Use of Parentheses, Glen.

I read that this thing started as an internet campaign by Colbert fans on reddit.com who lobbied the Colbert Report studios about holding a satirical rally.
