Millionaire Elizabeth Warren Claims She Is Not a Wealthy Individual Who Owns a Lot of Stock

AP
Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren turned a few heads after she appeared on MSNBC Thursday and declared she isn’t a wealthy individual who owns a lot of stock.
“I realize there are some wealthy individuals – I’m not one of them, but some wealthy individuals who have a lot of stock portfolios,“ Warren said on ”The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.”
The issue with that statement is that Warren — who’s running against Republican Scott Brown — could be worth as much as $14.5 million, Buzzfeed pointed out. Financial disclosure forms show she and her husband own between $100,001 and $250,000 of IBM stock, and between $2.8 million and $7.9 million in TIAA-CREF funds, the Boston Globe reported. A Harvard professor, Warren earned about $700,000 last year, including book royalties and consulting fees, and lives in a house worth $5 million.
Warren was making the point that members of Congress either should not own stocks or should have them in a blind trust in order to avoid a conflict of interest.
Warren spokesman Kyle Sullivan told the Globe she was referring to not having a wide stock portfolio in individual companies, which many members of Congress do. He said Warren’s sole individual stock is in IBM, which she has held for decades. In an email to Buzzfeed, he said she would get rid of her IBM stock if elected.

Posted on January 28, 2012 at 3:34pmOwning Stock is NOT EVIL. WTF???? It’s Business as usual. It’s the way companies grow. What’s evil is Ms. Warren declaring everybody successful owes ( I guess the Gov’t ) a percentage of their income. Well, that’s what taxes are for. Since Ms. Warren is RICH, who is she giving her money to for “them” helping her make her rich??? Let’s think about her double standards here.

“The difference between rich Democrats and rich republicans, is a willingness to pay their share of taxes.” Really? I think that any rational person will seek to minimize payment for any good or service. Of course this for people who are able to make good decisions for themselves: like not playing in traffic or getting married before having children. Common sense stuff.
You can improve your understanding of federal taxation. Do you know your effective fedreal rate? A married couple with a modest mortgage, filing jointly with an income of $122K, pay an effective rate of 10% to 12% in federal income tax. Variance in the effective rate results from itemized deductions for that filing year.
PS: net worth and wealth are the same thing.

Just so important for Democrats to stoke that class warfare issue ! ( Look at their urban militias : the anti-capitalist Occupiers . Marxists always want to punish the ” evil rich !” Did it in all of their past revolutions From the Bolsheviks to Castro . ) If all rich Democrats want to pay more in taxes, they certainly are able to NOW. Posted on January 28, 2012 at 5:59pm@Bernbart. Are you suggesting that rich people are paying a lower tax rate on capital gains, than poor or lower level incomes are paying on capital gains? That is simply not the case. Capital Gains rates are what we are discussing. The fact is, on Long Term Capital Gains, the two lowest income brackets pay a 0% rate, the rest of the income brackets pay 15%. With Short Term Capital gains, the rates are progressive, just like the regular income tax rates. Those with the highest income pay the highest rate. If John Doe makes $50K a year and has some stock to sell, no matter how you slice it, he will pay a LOWER rate than Warren Buffett or Elizabeth Warran.
It is frankly a lie because they are comparing two different types of taxes. Some rich people do not have regular income, so they only have capital gains. So what? Their capital gains rate is going to be higher than capital gains rates of someone who makes $50K. Also, this whole argument suggests that lower level incomes couldn‘t possibly have capital gains and that rich people don’t have regular income taxes. Which is also untrue. for example in the Buffett secretary issue. They completely leave out that Buffett ALSO receives a salary for his position of CEO @ BH.
Finally, the rich will ALWAYS pay more in taxes. While the rate may be a different kind, it ALWAYS more $$ than the lower income brackets are paying…ALWAYS. I guarantee that no secretary in this country is paying above $10Million in taxes.

There is nothing wrong with paying 12-15% in taxes, if it’s done according to the rules.
Warren Buffet an his secretary pay the same tax rate for long- term capital gains and income. As we‘ve recently learned Buffett’s secretary ears over $200K/yr, so she is paying the top marginal rate in her income (last dollar), just as Buffett is (I assume Berksire Hathaway pays Warren a salary that is at least equal to what they pay his secretary, over $200K/year, plus various other income from seats he holds on boards of directors and others).
Warren Buffet pays 15% on all income derived from long-term investments, the same rate his secretary pays on any long term capital gains she earns.
The only disparity is that Buffet earns the lions share of his income from investments, while his secretary earns the lions share of her income as wages.
There is no indication that either Mr. Buffett or his secretary are cheating on their taxes – they are simply following the rules as spelled out in the tax code.

Obama wants that seat back and of course Scott Brown isn’t a conservative–it’s Massachusetts. I may not have agencies names correct but this woman according to Hayek would be a Marxist in my opinion. Posted on January 28, 2012 at 8:27pm@MIREN — You completely missed the point. The article makes it clear that what is at issue here is the potential conflict of interest for any elected politician who is a shareholder of a given company’s stock. It has already been proven time and time again that our officials in Congress have a great deal more access than we do to the innerworkings of publicly traded companies, and that sets up an environment for unfair stock trading advantages we the public do not have. You need to read the whole thing before you start blasting comments out.

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 11:14amThere is nothing wrong or evil about paying between 12-15% taxes on income made from investments, as long as that is the amont any individual is legally required to pay. Those rates were set to encourage investment, and it is the same percentage I pay, you pay or wealthy people pay. It also has to be remembered that people most often make investments with disposable income that they make after paying income taxes. In other words, most people already paid income taxes at a higher rate, took money that was left over, invested that money, made money, and have to pay taxes again.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 10:22am“Fair” is in the eye of the beholder.
Report Post »Low tax rates on capital gains is associated with the risk involved in obtaining the gain and in the time value of money(now dollars vs then dollars). We apparently do not measure risk “fairly” since the amount of risk involved in much of what is called capital gains is low and the time value differential is also often low. However, if we remove the reward for taking risk, we will suffer the consequences of the rich merely parking their money in some safe place where risk is nil (even though tax rates are higher). This will slow business startups to a snails pace and business startups is where “new” employment is found.
