Mind Reading. Power harvesting. No more passwords. The Death of spam. Technology for everyone. These are five things IBM believes are the future. Not 50 years in the future, but more like five years in the future.
IBM’s annual 5 in 5 list is not just another collection of whimsical predictions. Each item in its five is a subject area in which IBM is actively engaged in research. IBM innovates as much as anyone in technology today, so when IBM says something will happen soon, there‘s a pretty good chance it’s gonna happen (see also: Watson).
Watch this video of IBM’s 5 in 5 predictions:
- IBM research in bioinformatics has given them great insights into brain activity during certain tasks and think it‘s not so far fetched to assume we’ll be able to make calls or control computers.
- IBM wants to be able to take all the kinetic energy generated by ourselves and the machines we use, and transfer that into juice for our electronic devices. Imagine if there was a standard where you could attach a power harvester to any piece of equipment with moving parts.
- There have been biometric scanners for awhile now, but how secure they’ve really been is up for debate. But the technology continues to improve, and IBM believes that face, retinal and voice scans will provide enough unique data to work as a security measure for the most sensitive of applications.
For the rest of IBM’s 5 in 5 list, be sure to check out their page here.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 4:49pmThat’s cool–I didn’t know they were so close. It may be a lot easier to achieve my dream than I thought…or they are just ignorant of the technical difficulties of the feat they‘re describing because they’ve yet to do it (you really can’t predict or appreciate how difficult something will be to learn, only judge in retrospect how difficult it WAS to learn).

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 11:37am5 years? NO WAY. I‘ll bet you right now we don’t see this sooner than 15 years.
“Think” something and it happens? Where can this possibly go wrong?
Using a (by building one) “database” of ‘your personal human DNA’ as security? Now, this couldn’t possibly turn out to be a bad idea, could it?
Sorry, these technologies may make IBM money, but, as we are seeing with the existing ‘tech’ that “IS” as far as the interest goes.
Encryption for secure systems is available right now. And, it works very well. When it’s used. But software companies DO NOT WANT to use it. There is more money to be made by NOT using it.
Our national infrastructure has been shown to be vulnerable to “hack attack” but why? Because they won’t protect it adequately. It can be done. But more money can be made by NOT protecting it.
Rebuilding destroyed infrastructure, purchasing new because previous was hacked and destroyed, software vulnerabilities that never seem to quite out smart the ‘villains’. All work to keep a positive cash flow moving through ‘tech’ companies doors.
These claims of (finally) a secure tech future, are bogus lures to get you to buy more useless junk.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 9:44amI have been working on computers for over 20 years now and you would think this type of stuff is exciting to me – but it is not. It’s just a continuous and gradual process to make us depend on technology and less on God. We are already, as it is, dealing with this. The suicide rate in this country was a few years ago the third major cause of death. People are sad and can’t find their purpose. You know it’s true! Have you noticed that these issues are not found in third world country. They are poorer than we are and yet they appear to have a healthier social and emotional life than we do here. This type of technology is problematic for you and me. The house being powered by self-produced energy is fine but the rest of it is a replacement of God…and God is the only worthy purpose any of us have. Here is a website with some good articles – http://www.JesusDivineMercy.com.

I have lived in 3rd world countries for a better part of my life. And they ALL want to come HERE. They are not happier than WE are because they are poor and can’t afford computers. Yes JESUS is THE answer with or without computers.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 11:35amNone of the projections for the future will come about unless industries find some way to profit from them.
Right now the advertising industry is raking in the cash from social media sites but, in the future, how will they profit from people checking the weather on their smartphones in Zimbabye as the video suggests?
And generating electricity from your bicycle, sure but such a small amount as to seem inconsequential even when considering the number of bicycle-miles travelled each year.
IBM has a very large PR BUDGET to keep their name in front of the public and prop up their stock on wall street. This whole thing sounds like the PR guys at work or the Popular Science stories of the flying cars from the 50s.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 7:20amI have plenty to say about this. First, some of the predictions are already in place and working in a more or less mechanical way. You are being tracked and the information is being used and it’s not all for the better. Next, in the early seventies the Rhines institute traveled across America testing children for abilities in brain wave control via bio-feedback. Gifted children were selected and the parents were told that after high school if the child attended college, that the various institutes involved would pay for the education provided the child took certain courses and after graduation would be hired into the system. This activity predated the brain wave control you see in this video. Machines today can detect patterns in waves that can be deciphered into commands to control sensitive equipment. And last, when and if all this actually occurs, which I doubt, a new order will emerge for better or worse. And even with the wonders being touted by technology nothing really gets any better in these times. Only a faster way to diminish our individuality. And I’m not alone in this opinion.

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 11:26amThe main topic, “Think,” is kind of ironic in the sense that the thing will eventually begin to think for you. How will it determine what is relevant information to you? That implies an artificial intelligence on the other end that will eventually substitute our thoughts for what its filters allow for us; determined by someone else. And once we have been dumbed-down enough to depend on it for any given knowledge, then all one need do is shut it off and sure enough you have flock of compliant, half-witted slaves.
I “Think” I’ll pass.
