Minn. City Rejects Islamic Center — and Now CAIR Wants the DOJ to Investigate

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is calling on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate a possible “anti-Muslim” hate crime after St. Anthony City Council almost unanimously rejected plans for a new Islamic center due to zoning concerns.
On Tuesday, St. Anthony City Council voted 4-1 against providing a conditional use permit for the “Abu-Huraira Islamic Center” after tabling the item for months, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. It is reportedly the first time in seven years that an Islamic place of worship has been blocked by local government in Minnesota.

“This is the first one [in Minnesota] where we’re seeing so much anti-Muslim hate involved,” said Lori Saroya, president of the Minnesota chapter of CAIR.
The imam of the Islamic center, Sheik Ahmed Burale, said his congregation, which consists of roughly 200 people, still wants the St. Anthony location and may take the council to court over its decision, according to the Star Tribune.
There were reportedly “several residents” who criticized Islam and at least one called the religion “evil” and one that condones violence.
On Wednesday, CAIR circulated this press release:
CAIR-MN is asking federal authorities to determine whether the denial of land usage for the Islamic center constitutes a violation of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA).
RLUIPA protects religious institutions from unduly burdensome or discriminatory land use regulations. RLUIPA and the Minnesota Constitution ban zoning restrictions that impose a substantial burden on the religious exercise of a person or institution unless the government can show that it has a compelling interest for imposing zoning restrictions and that the restriction is the least restrictive way for the government to further that interest.
“We ask the DOJ to use the full measure of its authority to launch a thorough investigation into the recent denial of the proposed Abu-Huraira Islamic Center,” wrote [Saroya].
Saroya said CAIR-MN is also asking DOJ officials to meet with St. Anthony Muslim leaders.
The Islamic center will also reportedly get some help from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in future court proceedings if there are any. The group regularly jumps at the chance to defend Islamic groups.
Judging from news reports, the majority of St. Anthony residents appeared to be against the Islamic center.
“You don’t live in the area, why are you looking in this area?” St. Anthony resident George Kaczor asked during the council meeting. “Why don’t you build in your own community?”
Another resident, Rob Lundeen, said there are “no pluses at all in letting this mosque in our city.”
“It’s a lose lose situation,” he continued. “If we get used by the ACLU, so be it. The ACLU doesn’t win them all. Let’s stand up for every little community and not be bullied.”

However, at a least one Muslim woman – dressed in traditional Islamic garb covering everything but her eyes – spoke in support of the mosque.
“Let there be a chance for an Islamic center to break the tensions between the people,” Aysha Wazwaz told council members. “Let that islamic center bring the classmates together. Let that islamic center be an open house.”
City Council members maintain that zoning issues were behind the decision not religious discrimination.
Council member Hal Gray said various religious groups have asked to locate houses of worship in similar light “industrial” zones, which council believes should be reserved for businesses.
“The industrial zone is set up for business, manufacturing, things like that,” he told the Star Tribune. “We have a very small area in St. Anthony set aside for industrial. So the more we take out of that, the less there is for economic development, jobs, et cetera.”
Gray also condemned some of the anti-Muslim statements made during the meeting, calling it “unfortunate” and that they don’t represent the “majority of St. Anthony residents” or the feelings of City Council members.
The 4-1 vote came a week after the St. Anthony Planning Commission encouraged City Council to approve the Islamic center.
If history tells us anything, there is a good chance of the DOJ responding to CAIR’s request. The Star Tribune reports that the Justice Department has launched investigations into 28 similar cases where new mosques were blocked.
“I think the overwhelming experience [for Muslims] has been positive in Minnesota,” Saroya told the Star Tribune. “There’s just a different culture here where people are more welcoming. The majority do have positive experiences, but there are groups of people in our community who are very vocal about their lack of understanding of Islam.”
Muslim communities have found a permanent home in Minnesota and Saroya estimates there are about 150,000 Muslims and close to 40 mosques throughout the state.
The Department of Justice had not reposed to CAIR’s request as of 9 a.m. Thursday.

Secondly, if muslims are not actual residents of St. Anthony, and the ACTUAL residents of St. Anthony “overwhelmingly” don’t want a mosque in their city, they ought to be able to decline having it there. That’s the essence of self-government. The obvious objective here is to force a muslim presence whether the people of the city want it or not. That’s coercion, plain and simple. This is not a Constitutional matter and the DOJ has no business getting involved.

The criminal and terrorist background of CAIR’s leadership and organization along with their enormous and disproportionate influence in government agencies should have them at the top of the list for investigation (instead of being at the top of the list for pandering to).

It is illogical to build a worship center away from the members, it should be close to them. This is yet another chance for Islam to horn its way into a new area. Anyone remember the story of the guy in a small Texas town where a mosque one the right to build there so he holds pig races on his property during the services.

I have had a somewhat remote dealing with one of the other similar mosques in the Twin Cities and they are militant, pushy and highly objectionable. I can understand why the fine citizens of St. Anthony don’t want one in their town. It is also highly likely that zoning is a major issue. The CAIR folks are just trying to continue the “conquer & subdue” tactics of their political ideology/theology……..”zoning issues be damned…….we are gonna build a mosque wherever we want and there is nothing you can do that will stop us because you are infidels and we are superior and you WILL submit”

Besides dress code here are a few others for you….
Muslims that work at the airport in MN as taxi drivers want the right to refuse service to passengers who violate muslim law. (people carrying alcohol, or people with dogs (including blind people with seeing eye dogs))
Muslims that work at grocery stores as check out clerks feel they should not have to, get this,…“touch” bacon if the customer who is checking out happens to be purchasing it.
A couple in Woodbury MN, was found with 1000lbs of COT,.. (a muslim hallucinogenic drug that they think they should be able to freely use and possess and have a different set of laws which apply only to them.)
I mean lets be serious man, time to open your eyes and grow a pair,..that religion is ridiculous and we should not have to make these absurd accommodations for these clowns. If they do not like this country then LEAVE

You can’t build a deck on your house without proper permits… Why is it that as soon as these groups hit a road block and don’t get their way, they’re screaming race and religous intolerance? St. Anthony is a small community in the Twin City metro area – why don’t they jump across city lines and try another location?
My work takes me all across the region, and I speak with many business owners in communities with growing Somali and Mexican populations. They have big issues with these people having no regard/respect for our laws. Crime rates are on the rise in some of these areas and a number of these towns can’t find enough cops (or even lawyers) who speak their language!!
Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why many of these people/communities are leery about letting this type of “progress” move into town…

The Greek Church (not the centuries old one) is in a dispute with the Port Authority, over its new location, the PA gave in one site, because the site the Greek Church wanted was going to be used by the New Tower. The Muslim Center is blocks away from the WTC site. Again, your post is short on facts and long on pure bile and hate. It is pure racism you are spouting, you have generalized an entire group of people to justify denying them one of the most basic civil rights.

There was an instance of exactly that recently. A church was holding service in a rented space, the lease ran out, it was only a temporary lease, and it was then not renewed. I forget the exact details, but it was in California.
Most people said, “Oh well, it was a temporary lease, move on”
This is a zoning law question (apparently) that has been turned into Islamic victim hood.

Christianity certainly has it’s share of hypocrisy but nowhere in the New Testament does Jesus himself harm or kill a person and he never asks that we kill others or treat women like chattel. I watched tens of thousands from Gaza to Saudi to Turkey and beyond out in mass dancing and celebrating the fall of the towers and the mass murder of our citizens. It was so pervasive in Gaza their leaders started telling them to tone it down they were starting to expose the big lie you still propagate to this day. Do not try to tell me there are only a few terrorists and the majority are peaceful. This is a lie. They have shown by their celebrations in incredible numbers how they feel, think, and believe concerning the death of 3,000 innocent men, women, and little children, and the terrible destruction of billions of dollars of our nations assets. I have the video evidence of the way they feel about us covering hundreds of thousands in many nations. Do you think I believe the thousands I saw on recorded video represents only a small majority of them? Or the study of the way they treat all peoples en mass in history for over a thousand years. This is not evidence of hatred on my part I saw it and am merely relating what I saw with my own eyes. This is truth. I have hundreds of millions of witnesses globally who all saw the exact same thing. You can claim we all are full of hate for reporting honestly what we saw and prove yourself to be a deceitful liar. Out of the thousands upon thousands celebrating that day every one of them had the identical thing in common. Every damn one of them were muslim. I saw not one soul dancing who belonged to any other faith. Not even the atheists were dancing with glee, not communists, not anyone from any other nation or group on earth openly celebrated this horrific mass murder and violence who was not in the set of all people who claim to be muslin. None, nada, no not one. All the rest of the citizens all over the world watched in stunned silence with horror praying for the souls jumping from the towers, praying for the dead, for the police and firemen (and brave women). They ran into the destruction and lost their lives trying to save others. All over the world we were horrified at the violence and suffering. All except the muslims en mass dancing shouting and passing out candy and gifts in every corner of the earth wherein they reside. No other group of people behaved in this manner. I use the term with irony as no human praises mass death and violence. I speak truth.

Tired of the lie becoming the mindset where there are a couple bad guys but the 2 billion are nice as can be. They by nature protect the terrorists and work to wipe from all nations anything not them and their way. This is not welcome here and I am in a vast majority in this. Dune was cool, using the sleeper to describe the average American coming out of their zombie slumber and realizing if they do not start getting involved their whole way of life will soon be gone. But yet when a majority of the people vote to reject an issue or in this case reject a use permit. The governmant, liberals and the media feel like they have to jump in and overrule the people. What is a democracy if not the will of the majority? Why call it a democracy when we constantly impede its main teneant? Rule of the people, by the people and for the people.

We elect people to represent our views and to protect our rights – therefore when a majority of the City Council vote to uphold the Zoning Restrictions the are protecting our rights as a democratic republic and representing the will of the people as was the intent of our Founding Fathers. There is no need for a DOJ investigation of this matter. It doesn’t matter if the people speaking (as is their right) at a public hearing don‘t want Muslim’s in their town – what matters is that the Mosque was asking for an exemption of the Zoning and it was denied on that basis.
