Minor League Baseball Team to Change Name from ‘Saints’ to ‘Aints’ for Special Atheist Promotion

For one night next month, the minor league baseball St. Paul Saints will become the “Mr. Paul Aints” for a game sponsored by a local atheist group.

The Minnesota team known for some off-the-wall promotions — Michael Vick dog chew toys, for one — will have a theme night on Aug. 10 titled “A Night of Unbelievable Fun” hosted by the Minnesota Atheists. Players will wear special “Aints” jerseys and the letter “S” in all Saints signs and logos will be covered, according to the Religious News Service.

“I think our message here and our brand of entertainment has always been one that’s been inclusive,” Saints general manager Derek Sharrer told Fox Sports North. “When we were approached by the Minnesota Atheists, we felt like it was within our nature to be inclusive and certainly work with them to provide them the opportunity to provide their message in the same way that we have worked with hundreds and hundreds of faith-based groups over our 20 years here in St. Paul.”

August Berkshire, president of Minnesota Atheists, told the Religious News Service his organization wants to show that atheists can have fun.

“We picked the name not as a political statement, but just as something that was fun,” he said. “We thought everybody ain’t got a belief in something so it was a word everybody could relate to. Obviously, we ain’t got a belief in God.”

Dave Silverman, president of American Atheists, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game and there will be references to Big Foot and UFOs in the stadium, RNS reported.

Sharrer told the Associated Press the team has hosted Christian concerts and a Jewish heritage night and that it would be “hypocritical” to tell the atheists no. The “Aints” jerseys will be auctioned off for charity after the game.

“The one thing I can assure you is that it will be all in good fun,” Sharrer said. “This isn’t about mocking or ridiculing any one belief. This is about presenting the beliefs of this group of folks in a way that can be fun and entertaining.”

Squirt gun fights in hell? Only according to the story you were told. there are, literally, 40,000 religions out there, and they all think they are the true one. Ten seconds of investigation will show you this. Don’t be afraid. You might learn something.

Actually, Dave, they DON‘T all think they’re “the one.” In fact, most religions believe that there are many ways to God. In FACT, your 40,000 number is ridiculously overstated. There may be different sects and denominations, but there are not 40,000 different religions. It’s really funny when somebody tries to seem smart and like they know what they are talking about only to exaggerate beyond any sort of reasonable point just to prove a point.

now having said that, there are simply a lot more Christians here than Muslims. Muslims also don‘t knock on my door asking if i’ve heard the good news of Allah. i don’t have 17 mosques in my small suburban Philadelphia town, but i do have 17 churches (and no hospitals). quite frankly, many of you are quite annoying and easy to poke fun at.

regardless, belief in Allah or Yaweh are equally foolish in our eyes. we don’t “go after” Hindus but belief in their Gods is foolish as well. actually, that is something that Christians and Atheists have in common!

@ Philly- 2 of your comments I have seen before. Let’s tackle the first one, why won’t God show a sign? Well this argument was made almost 2,000 yrs ago as well… “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” (2 Pet. 3:4) Even the Pharisees wanted a sign (Mark 8:11-12) and though Jesus did many signs some people still didn’t believe (John 12:37). So even if a miraculous sign (i.e. raising one from the dead, a paraplegic healed and walking on his own) was done in front of your eyes you probably still wouldn’t believe.

Second comment was about those who know what God thinks, while I certainly can tell you I do not know exactly what He thinks I can tell you what His will is. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is (Ephesians 5:17). God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9). God’s will for mankind is for us to be saved. Some will hear it, some will not. Yes there are many different thoughts on how do you go about that and honestly the only way you‘ll find salvation is through God’s word, not man’s. That‘s why there’s so many denominations today is because they all sought to teach doctrines of men and not God’s truth. I hope you’ll do some study on it and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

History shows us that all of the great nations of the world have never lived much more than 200 years (except the Roman empire), and there has been sequential stages in every case.

The first stage moves from bondage to spiritual faith. The second from spiritual faith to great courage. The third stage moves from great courage to liberty. The fourth stage moves from liberty to abundance. The fifth stage moves from abundance to selfishness. The sixth stage moves from selfishness to complacency. The seventh stage moves from complacency to apathy. The eighth stage moves from apathy to moral decay. The ninth stage moves from moral decay to dependence. And the tenth and last stage moves from dependence to bondage.

Just thought I would add a little historic observations to the conversation. Wonder where most would say we are at on this scale?

Kind of like jumping off of a building. You can say you don’t believe in gravity but the physical laws act upon your decision regardless. In the same manner, the moral law established by that Creator acts upon our foolish decisions whether you believe in them or not. Logically then, this does not implicate the designer’s intelligence in anyway, far from it it actually substantiates the existence of an intelligent Creator therein because it is what is taught in that Designers word will happen when He and His truth are abandon for another “wisdom”….Thanks ahead….Remember observation of pattern is a foundation of science and science is the attempt at explanation for observations.

The young in America are infested with the Look At Me /virus. Guess the old 15 minutes of fame has been giant-sized by the Good Job Generation. Unfortunately, what happened when the older tenet that “ children should be seen and not heard” was abandoned . Wonder to which charity they will donate …..

      @doors
tkx for the candid response, but it still falls short in the ‘origin’ department. Takes way more faith for you to believe that a tornado ran through a junkyard, and lo and behold, a 747 appeared. Get the point? The problem with evolution (among myriads); it does not addresss the ‘beginning’ of anything, just speculation. I have an answer for both the tornado and the 747, ie, God-creation.
Its much easier to believe there is One greater than man. By the way, as far as the atheism thing goes, you really do not ‘disbelieve.‘ ’The fool says IN HIS HEART, there is no GOd,’ its not a matter of belief, but denial. Many a fool (including myself) had the scales lifted from the eyes.

The tornado in a junkyard making a 747 claim just shows how little you know about how evolution works. You should pick up some evolution books, rather than just reading books that perpetuate your stagnant unknowing of the actual processes.

True, it doesn’t explain how life started but that honestly has nothing to do with evolution. I hope in the future, maybe not mine, they will now how it started. They are getting damns close.

Fortunately, now you don’t even need one single fossil to prove evolution. Even though every fossil found never, let me repeat that, never has gone against the theory of evolution we don’t need them. Not with genetics. Like I said, just read about genetics, its beautiful, every living thing is related in a gigantic family tree. Our closest living relative is chimpanzees and bonobos. We are actually more closely related to chimpanzees than horses are to donkeys…and they can actually breed so draw your own conclusions there.

Just a book for suggestion…Language of God by Francis Collins. He is a Christian and the head of the Human Genome Project. They have mapped the entire human genome. He has a chapter in there about believing evolution. In order for your beliefs to stay relevant you must start recognizing the overwhelming evidence for evolution.

dont assume that believers are unlearned…
I AM familiar with collins work and you would be happy to know, he is in the elite company of ‘theistic evolutionists’ (surely u knew that already) and that I happily disagree with him -solely beacause he disagrees with God. He found value in Darwin, so what?

If he cannot get the basics correct, he is not on my team; ie; he stated that ‘it was impossible in the gene pool for man to evolve from a set of single parents, Adam and Eve,’ so if he errs here in the most simplest of form, his further arguments also crumble.

God SAYS all life sprang from a man named Adam, and EVe, whom He named, and by the way, he coined the term male and female…Where does your evolution say HOW men and women were named???????????????????
I’ll take God, you can have the alleged learning of a so called believer.

No one is assuming. You are demonstrating you are unlearned.

Especially when you make statements like this: “God SAYS all life sprang from a man named Adam, and EVe, whom He named, and by the way, he coined the term male and female…Where does your evolution say HOW men and women were named???????????????????”

      Origin:
1300–50; Middle English < Middle French ma ( s ) le < Latin masculus. See masculine

      Origin:
1275–1325; Middle English, variant (by association with male) of femelle < Anglo-French, Old French femel ( l ) e < Latin fēmella, diminutive of fēmina woman ( see -elle); in VL developing the sense “female of an animal”

      Yo Doors:

I do believe the genome of the mouse and humans has more simularities than that of the chimp and humans … also your guys like to label some of it “junk” (DNA) when this “junk” is taken into consideration the simularities drop substancially … all you have is fools gold and a lying/deceived exchanger. If you listen to evolutionists you NEVER get the whole story … I read their stuff …
The idea of the plane and the junkyard is valid and points to the impossibilities of the complexities of life beginning by shear chance with no intent of purpose or reason. The fact that you realize that the plane cannot possibly be assembled should wake you to your own false belief. Instead you invalidate it due to preconceived ideas that are unwilling to allow anything else in.
You always like to tell of the simularities but ignore the vast, immense, humungus difference .1% makes let alone 1% or 2% or 10%, but then again you must do that, you are a slave to it, Though is does not have to be such. As far as the christianity of Collins …. maybe … just cause he was part of the genome project and a very intelligent man does not equate to great faith.

We are not…we do have an ancestor to the mouse but that ancestor is further away than the one we share with the chimpanzee. Again, we are not talking about the origin of life just how life evolved. So again a tornado in a junkyard to show why evolution is false only reveals how little you know about evolution. That is all I can say other than put down the left behind series and pick up a science book.

      @JohnVincent

Francis Collins is not disagreeing with God. He has just seen the proof. It wasn’t written in a book 2,000 years ago by bronze age people who didn’t have a microscope. He saw it for himself and we can see it now. I guess when the Greeks found out what lightning was they were disagreeing with Zues? Unfortunately, the discussion ends here and faith takes over. When you are presented with mountains of real time evidence…here and now…your faith takes over and you decide to believe things that have no evidence. What could we continue to talk about? You have the human genome research in your hands(evidence), and you still choose to believe in talking snakes(no evidence). You live in your own world and your faith makes the rules.
