Mitch Daniels: Cut Perry Some Slack

Mitch Daniels Cut Perry Some Slack

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is asking fellow Republicans not to count out Rick Perry. Some conservatives are disappointed with the Texas governor’s performance in the latest GOP debates.

Daniels says it’s too early for what he calls “last rites” over the Perry campaign, and he notes that Perry hasn’t been in the race for very long. Daniels says people ought to cut Perry some slack and give him a little time.

Daniels also says he‘s worried that the party’s nominee will end up playing it safe in light of President Barack Obama’s political weakness, and merely campaign as a default option to Obama’s re-election.

Daniels tells CNN’s “State of the Union” that this strategy would miss the opportunity to have an in-depth discussion about government spending.

Daniels expressed in a recent interview that he has been frustrated by the discourse in the campaign, and that the field could benefit from at least one more contender. Perry‘s supporters have defended the Texas governor’s controversial “Ponzi Scheme” statements in regards to social security, by inaccurately claiming Daniels says the same in his upcoming book, “Keeping the Republic.” Daniels exact quote on the matter:

“This whole setup is enough to give Mr. Ponzi a bad name – or a legitimate job. If old Carlo were around today, he’d have made an ideal Social Security commissioner.”

Commentators on the left, and some on the right, have labeled Perry’s Ponzi Scheme statement as proof that the Texas governor is out of touch with the majority of Americans.

“I don’t think any of this is very helpful,” Daniels told the New York Times in regards to Perry’s Ponzi scheme statement and how Romney’s campaign has jumped all over it. “If there’s a problem with ‘Ponzi scheme,’ it is that it’s too frank, not that it’s wrong. But by stopping there, he might be unnecessarily scaring people.”

Daniels’ kind words Sunday in reaction to Perry criticism should not be taken as an endorsement. Reports surfaced Saturday that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been rethinking his repeated refusal to run for President in 2012, and has reportedly met to discuss the matter with major New York donors as well as Daniels this week. At an event that Daniels participated with Christie in New Jersey Thursday, Daniels hinted he still believes Christie will enter the race.

Mitt Romney made kind remarks in regards to Daniels, and possibly to lobby for the most sought-after GOP endorsement in 2012,  at a campaign stop in Indiana Friday. Romney told the crowd that if he were President Mitch Daniels could have any job he wanted in government.

Perry’s not conservative, That’s just plain goofy thinking on your part. Is Perry in the mainstream of conservative thought on immigration? Nope, but that doesn’t disqualify him as a conservative. Is he a moderate? Hardly. Is he a liberal? Only to the insane. Is he an opportunist? It’s very hard, if not impossible for any politician not to indulge in opportunism to some degree.

NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE “CHANGE POSITIONS BY THE POLLS” RINO ROMNEY IS. Romney is ridiculous.1) Still believes in Man-Made Global warming hoax 2) Still Supports Ethanol Subsidies which have failed 100% by all conceivable metrics (even lunatic Al Gore says so) 3) Refuses to acknowledge that he screwed up with Romneycare because he fails to understand the Conservative Constitutional Principles our nation was built on and that government intrusion into this area serves to permanently changes the relationship of Americans from Citizens to Subjects. Listen, we’ll never each agree with every position of a candidate. At the time I worked for Reagan there were certain issues I was not clear on at the time. However, a leader must lead and it is always better to have a President, with whom you disagree with on certain issues, who is man enough to intellectually support the position (you disagree with) and stand by it-ERGO “A Leader”. For example, in the 1980’s I had no opinion on the Abortion issue. However, based on the advances in science and the ability to remove viable fetuses at earlier times during a pregnancy, I became Pro-life. Therefore, with the information out there for the last decade, one had what was necessary to take a position on the issue. This issue is not a social program experiment or an economic disagreement. For Romney to be so over-the-top Pro-Choice until less than 2 years ago when the Polls showed>50% were Pro-life, leads me to question his character&

Perry should have known what he was getting into when he threw his hat in the ring. This is the GOP not the Democrats who not only get cut slack but the lamestream media covers up and cheerleads for them.

I think the voters were cutting Perry way too much slack as it was and now that more about him has come out in the light he cannot stand up to it. If he cannot take the vetting from his own party he surely will not be able to stand up under the scrutiny of Team Obama and his Chicago thuggery. Certainly not the lamestream once the GOP nominee is chosen when they will really open up with all the dirt they have uncovered from their swarms of investigators who only use their massive investigative resources on the GOP. Stick a fork in him he is done! Everyone knows that at this point except Perry and his biggest Koolade drinkers around him.

The establishment wants anyone but Mitt Romney….They want open borders and know that Mitt Romney is dead serious about securing our borders. That is why they are pushing Perry and if he isn’t up to the job they want Christie. They want anyone but Mitt because they realize that he is honest, believes very strongly in the Constitution and will keep his campaign promises and will not sell out to them. Do not be deceived by the anyone but Mitt movement it is all about choosing someone who will fill their cabinet and administration with CFR, Trilateral and Bilderberg members. Romney will not do that and sadly most of the others will. Do not be deceived, Mitt Romney may have things you do not like about him but he is the most electable person in our lifetime who will actually stand up against the shadow government and you can take that to the bank.

I agree with those that state correctly that Romney is “NOT” the establishment candidate. Romney has a brain and lots of money and can not be dictated to by a group of globalist billionaires. In 2008 when Romney ran for president he took a strong stand on the need to enforce our borders. As a governor he enforced illegal immigration laws and voted down instate tuition. Romney is still stressing the importance of immigration law and border enforcement. He has been firm and consistent with this issue.

Bush,McCain and now Perry are the establishment’s selection. If you review their history you will see they did not enforce borders and essentially they enabled illegal immigration. When Bush was president all I heard from Dobbs,O”Reilly and Beck were that the borders were not enforced. Perry would permit the same type of enforcement as Bush and McCain. Look at Perry’s history and travel to Texas to see for yourself. If Perry falls flat on his face they are looking to Christie who also has a pro-amnesty record.

We are to the point that our electorate will be forever changed. The more illegals, the more Democrats. More illegals bring higher healthcare costs, higher education costs and higher crime rates. I personally like many citizens are sick and tired of footing the bill and being told I do not have a heart!!!! Wake up people!

Cut him some slack! He is running for POTUS not dog catcher. The fact that he continues to make excuses about why he does so bad at these debates should speak loud and clear about his ability to do the job. One reason he does so bad is that he is trying to act like he is someone different than who he is. When he speaks it is his true colors. Again, listen to his words and look at his previous actions. He supports open borders, he will use executive orders to promote bad policy just like the presidents before him and he supported subsidies for illegal immigrants. He is a RINO pure and simple.

The only thing that I do agree with him on is that Social Security is a ponzi scheme. No one from the inception of the program has put in the equivalent of what they will take out, especially since the time they added Medicare and Medicare Part D as part of the benefits. The government has always relied on more people putting into the program than were taking from it. When a program is subsidized by the taxpayer it is an entitlement. It is about time people start calling it what it is.

Not only do you not have any facts but it is very clear your pure TROLL. Rick Perry does not support & has never supported open borders. And as for the rest of you phony hypocrites, y’all yelped like hell when Obama rammed obamacare down your throat, yet you think Perry in 2001 should have rammed his way down Texans throats. FYI if you had been listening to the debate instead of flapping your jaws you might have actually been able to grasp what was said. Our damn Dream Act was VETO PROOF, it was supported by majority of Texans, passed by 99.6% of our legislature, Perry could not veto. If he did it would have been like Obama ramming Obamacare down our throats. I would MUCH rather have a Gov or President that LISTENS to what people want than forces what he wants on us.

As for me I respect Perry, he could get out of the whole thing, he had been Gov less than a year-taking over for Bush (I think about 2 months), it was VETO PROOF, he could blame us Texans legitimately, instead the man is showing Guts & not BLAMING but accepting responsibility for it. And please do NOT try to say your a conservative-because your very words prove you a liar. Conservatives support the Constitution & this is a State issue-until Feds secure borders (& we have spent a fortune on it here in TX) each state has to deal with their illegals how they see FIT. This is a Texas decision & like it or not it was the will of Texans in 2001-10 years ago things were different.

@HAUSCHILD Perry is a democrat who was persuaded to run as a republican. That didn’t change who he is. I hear conservatives bragging about his jobs growth in Texas, but it is my understanding that the growth predates his governorship. He dunns the tax pasyer for housing illegals in prisons and wants to educate illegal’s children because they are here through no fault of their own. How I wanted someone to just stand up and say…send them back home to Mexico..they have freakin schools there! They are illegals! Pull all illegal support. They are receiving 338.3 billion from us tax payers every year in the form of welfare, food stamps, grade school and jr high education alone, imprisonment, anchor babies, and healthcare -medicade. Enough already..our own people are suffering.! All but Romney want to cut Social Security and Medicare leaving our elderly out on the streets and without any health insurance. We the people are funding these illegals and Perry prefers them over our own,..There is no way he is going to win this.

Victoria 29-How has Romney the conservative candidate set up a run for a 3rd party? I believe it was Glenn Beck who was setting this up with his criticism of Romney. Glenn is Rupert’s little puppet. Glenn is rooting for Perry this week and next week it will be Christie if Rupert and the Koch brothers convince the walking heart attack Christie to run. Mark my words. Romney is not the establishment candidate.

The only thing people are throwing at Romney is Romneycare and when Romneycare came out in 2006 the Heritage foundation hailed it as a great piece of conservative legislation because it forced the deadbeats to buy insurance so the tax payers didn’t have to foot the bill. The bill was a state bill and it was signed in 2006. The new liberal governor and the liberal legislature implemented the bill after Romney left office so no wonder the costs went through the roof. Romney is not a RINO, candidate like Perry are the RINOs and perhaps Christie if he gets into the race! Personally I think people should drop the labels and discuss the candidates complete resume.

Seems like there’s been a huge misunderstanding about this and shame on Perry for not explaining it better at the debate. It is NOT taxpayer subsidized. They have to meet the same requirements as other out-of-staters by living in TX for 3 yrs, (paying sales taxes, etc.) plus show proof they are in the process of becoming legal and they have to pay it themselves. So it‘s a question about whether you allow them education or not since we haven’t got this set yet about what to do with them. The Legislature voted unamiously to do this – figuring it would at least keep them off the govn’t dole and then be able to contribute, etc. And as the argument that it’s a “magnet” for more – most illegals could care less about this. Perry is strongly for sealing the borders but a fence on the entire border will not work, but is for “strategic fencing” where it will and then put boots on the ground and aviation help but the Feds have refused to help which angers him. This is entirely a state issue & as Pres. he would send all the help needed to seal the border & then be open to discuss what to do with the illegals – he is against “amnesty”. The problem is Perry seems not to be very good at defending & explaining in a concise manner about these things.

I will cut Perry some slack when he begins to listen to the American People. He misled and ignores a large section of Texans and frankly does not seem to care very much.
He supports the business people in Texas who need cheap labor instead of the law of the land. He needs to answer for this which is what seems to be happening as he continue with this poor choice he made here in Texas.
Sorry Gov. You fooled us here long enough to get elected, but not again…

wow you must live in a different part of texas than me or any of my family & we have most of Texas covered. Rick Perry has always listened to Texans, that is exactly what all this BS is about listening to Texans-in 2001 the majority of us wanted this law passed & it ****** me off to see phony people like you running around trying to pretend otherwise.

Victoria-29-My family who resides in Houston,Dallas and San Antonio would agree with TexanPatriot regarding Perry’s performance as governor. There was a poll in Texas last week where Perry had a negative approval rating.

      Christie is NOT an option.
You might as well just vote in obama again if Christie gets the nomination.
Because you will get obama…or obama heavy.
      And we will be doomed.

LILLYMCKIM and VENNOY You are both right. Who ever gains enough support to win the nomination deserves our support. No two minds and no two persons passions match perfectly, we always need to compromise to get along.
After we win back the White house, (God willing) I’d like a candidate that can gain support of Democrats for policies that will shrink government. This was one of the things about Mitch Daniels I admired. He respects people even if they disagree with him. This alarms some, but in the long run we need to develop a general consensus that smaller government, and less dependence on government makes for stronger families, and stronger, happier Americans.
