Mitt Romney Secures Victory in Nevada Caucuses

CNN has projected and The Associated Press reports that Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has secured a convincing victory in Nevada’s Republican presidential caucuses Saturday. The win makes back-to-back state victories for Romney following his strong performance in the Florida Republican primary on January 31st. Romney is the first Republican candidate of the 2012 primary season to win two states in a row.
The former Massachusetts governor held a double-digit lead over his nearest pursuer as the totals mounted in a state where AP notes that fellow Mormons accounted for roughly a quarter of all caucus-goers.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul are still fighting for a distant second. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum trails the field.
UPDATE (10:54 p.m.)
POLITICO reports that the Romney campaign has emailed reporters a reminder that the former Massachusetts governor‘s victory in Nevada Saturday was representative of more than just the state’s large LDS population. Team Romney’s bullet points:
- Just like Florida, Nevada’s exit polls showed a very broad victory for Mitt Romney.
- Mitt Romney won among conservatives, Tea Party members, women, men, low income, high income, etc.
- Mitt Romney won a majority of “very conservative” voters (51%). He defeated Newt Gingrich (40-31%) among strong Tea Party voters. He won 48% of the vote among evangelicals (48 – 27%) over Newt Gingrich.
- Like Florida, Mitt Romney won handily among voters who said electability was the most important quality in a candidate.
- Like Florida, Mitt Romney won handily among voters who said the economy is the top issue.
- LDS voters make up 26% of the caucus votes. Even without the LDS votes, Mitt Romney still would have won decisively (by 17 points).
- While Mitt Romney won a majority of the LDS vote, he won among Protestants, Catholics and everybody else by wide margins.
(11:05 p.m.)

“This is not the first time you’ve given me your vote of confidence, and this time, I’m going to take it to the White House,“ Romney opened over chants of ”Mitt, Mitt, Mitt.”
Romney focused his speech almost entirely on contrasting his record with President Obama, rather than the remaining Republican candidates for president.
“This week he’s been trying to take a bow for 8.3 percent unemployment. Not so fast, Mr. President,” said Romney. “This is the 36th straight month with unemployment above the red line your own administration drew.”
Transcript of Romney’s complete prepared remarks from Saturday night.
(11:27 p.m.)
Returns from 14 of 17 counties showed Romney with 42 percent support, Gingrich with 25 percent, Paul with 20 percent and Santorum with 13 percent.
According to the AP count, Romney began the day with 87 of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the Republican nomination. Gingrich had 26, Santorum 14 and Paul 4.

How about Romney actually had a real job. He has been a governor-that is executive experience. He ran, no, he saved the Winter Olympics. He refused his inheritance and earned his own fortune. He gave more to charity last year than the entire Democrat party House of Representatives members and Obama combined (guessing). He was never raised by a communist. He was never a community organizer. He was never hanging out in a church with an American hating idiot preaching racial hatred.
Oh, and his wife has been proud of her country before.

Posted on February 5, 2012 at 12:41amRomney is 2012! I simply do not understand the objections to Romney. He’s the perfect Republican candidate. He’s a self-made millionaire whose proposed tax plan supports millionaire job creators like him. His plan actually reduces the tax he pays, US taxes anyway, by almost half. His plan makes the poorest and middle class pay even more to make up the difference. Romney simply doesn’t have divisiveness and class warfare in his character! He simply wants to make sure the 99% to pay their fair share and he’s sick and tired of the millionaires paying more than their fair share.
Of course, that means your taxes are going to go up, and those in poverty, the lazy drug addled poor will have to pay more (hello! maybe they should stop taking drugs ya think?). But you’ll be supporting the Tea Party ideal of supporting the very richest in our country. That increases the freedom of every American and reduces all the stomping upon of the Constitution the President is doing, like, every day.
Just now I‘m thinking of all the freedoms I’ll regain once Romney becomes President. I’ll pay more taxes, sure, and the poor will be left without food or healthcare. But this is America! We have to make choices. And I’ll take freedom over helping the poor every time!

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 11:16pmRomney’s victory in Nevada shows a large number of people that supported him in 2008 abandoning him for other candidates. Is that really the candidate the Republican Party will nominate?
In 2008, Republicans abandoned principle to vote for the candidate that was sure to win in November – and Obama creamed him. Are they really going to be “practical” and do that again? Because if they do, they will lose again.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 11:22pm2008 was about “making history” and millions of voters assuaging their white guilt. The GOP could have run Jesus, and Obama still would’ve won.
Obama can no longer run on “making history” and can’t depend on white guilt voters. 2012 is not 2008!
Comparing 2012 to 2008 is silly. The 2012 election is about the economy and Obama will lose.
Look, we’re stuck with 2nd strong candidates this time around, and there’s nothing we can do about that. Polls show Romney beating Obama in many swing states and Newt losing by 15 points.

I myself being an independent will not go back to the Republican ticket so therefore I had no voice in this primary, but you can bet your booties come the general election time they will want my support. If it happens to be Mitt Romney I may vote the Constitution party but if Ron Paul is still in I will give a my support and hold my nose. Looking at the districts in Nevada where Mitt Romney won voter turnout was low in comparison to the districts that Newt Gingrich won were higher than average. The same thing happened in the state of Florida the question is why did it move both Florida Nevada up on the primary tickets, meaning the establishment GOP knowing full well that Mitt Romney had a advantage over Newt Gingrich therefore making voters believe Mitt Romney is the candidate. Don’t believe me this the first year that this has happened and who controls the GOP you got it money money money. and still some people cannot see through the smoke and mirrors that’s why we have the America we have pull the plug in the bathtub because the water and the ship is sinking.

Church affiliation I don’t belong to an organized church but I am a Christian, have lived in Arizona one particular city mostly Mormon now live in Nevada Mormon influence also have property in Utah highly influenced by the Mormon culture. A republican appointed judge doesn’t get an automatic YES either since Gov Bush and Gov Crist filled the bench with liberal judges so I Google “Judge Tom Jones (or whatever his name is ) and the word criticism” or .some other word to see if any of ther cases come up. I actually voted for a democrat Govenor appointed judge who sided with the 2nd amendment and against several of Gov Crist judges who was were truly liberal.
In 2008 and 2010, I researched EVERY candidate on my absentee ballot who did NOT have a Republican or Democrat title next to their name (not just judges) to see WHAT that candidate BELIEVED, what party or candidate they gave money to in the past, and if they ever ran for office before and whether they ran as a D or an R. In a major step towards global centralization of election processes, the world‘s dominant Internet voting company has purchased the USA’s dominant election results reporting company.
When you view your local or state election results on the Internet, on portals which often appear to be owned by the county elections division, in over 525 US jurisdictions you are actually redirected to a private corporate site controlled by SOE software, which operates under the name ClarityElections.com.

Man that is so true. I shook my head the entire primary season 4 years ago. Sick that McCain was beating Romney.

When Romney says God Bless America or God Bless you all, it is the Loving God he is speaking about, not the Marxist Allah backwards type of god thie liar spews about. God bless our America we had turned our backs on You and it shows in our land please forgive us we are rallying back Father, Amen

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 10:55pmYou say Obama isnt a Christian, and most Christians believe Mormons arent Christians.
Romney is a progressive, Newt is a globalist, and Santorum is a social engineer. None of them are worth my vote. Good luck winning the election vs Obama with guy that if you looked their they work views on paper you couldnt tell them apart.
I am writing Ron Paul’s name in if I have to.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 10:37pmWhy does anyone think Romney is an unbeatable candidate, when even now, before the mainstream media has attacked him, he is polling *only even* with Obama?
Will we turn around this country by electing a Progressive Republican? Or have you given up on electing a conservative of any kind? Don’t give up. I haven’t. Don’t compromise. Don’t feel you have to accept whatever bad deal you are given, without trying, without caring.
I don‘t know why all of our best candidates decided they shouldn’t run. Except…do you remember the pretty near satanic anger Rush had against Mitch Daniels, when he was weighing entering the race? Just because he said you can be kind to people on the other side, without saying at all, as Rush somehow missed, that you have to compromise with them on policy.
The vicious unreasoning rage displayed by some of the conservative icons that we once thought were saviors of America. Rush. Ann Coulter. Michelle Malkin. Mark Steyn. I haven’t been listening to Beck lately, because he’s gone off the air in my market, but he’s killing us, more or less deliberately.
The darkness of some of these folks, when they were supposed to be such figures of righteousness.
No, I’m not bitter. But I can’t help seeing that, except on policy, I have more in common soul-wise with many liberals than many proclaimed conservatives, who are really just enthusiastic destroyers.

But Romney is likely the best of the 4 to win against Obama. That’s hardly the same thing.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 10:36pmThis republican primary is a sham!!!! what a load of garbage we get to choose from…..lets see, Obama…TOTAL FAILURE….AND……ANTI-AMERICAN/ CONSTITUTION…. Romney, LIAR…as liberal as you can get, has increased the size of government by 3 fold and loves to spend and tell the peasants what to do…. this is all providing of course that Romney is the candidate(which will make me vomit). Newt Sucks, and Santorum is a War Monger…. so I guess if Ron Paul keeps getting the shaft by BOTH stupid party’s…this nation is FRIGGEN DOOMED!!!!!!!!!!

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 10:39pmRon Paul has been in Washington for years and years … Romney was a Gov. of Mass … Newt has been in Washington … The outsider is Romney.
Report Post »JP16
Posted on February 5, 2012 at 12:48amRon Paul’s message is being heard, and that’s part of the reason why so many people are not pleased with the outcome so far. Others are looking for new candidates because they just don’t see one that really does it for them. Paul loses people because he does not distinctly say what he would do if we needed to go to war, and instead sounds like a pacifist who would just let us be attacked constantly. Santorum has not proven that he wouldn’t be the Christian Ideologue who would promote religious beliefs into legislation. Gingrich speaks a big game, but ultimately can stand for anything, and Romney is way too left for many people to really want to vote for.

If Obama gets a second term, we’ll be calling the first term the good old days. He acts like it is a done deal. Like our votes are useless. I don’t think so. If we focus we can do it.
