Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the Conservative Poliitical Action Conference presidential straw poll. (Image source: Reuters)
Mitt Romney won the Conservative Political Action Conference’s straw poll, soundly beating his fellow GOP presidential contenders with 38 percent of the vote, the Washington Times reported.
Rick Santorum placed second with 31 percent and Newt Gingrich was third with 15 percent. Ron Paul — who did not attend CPAC — came in last with just 12 percent of the vote, after dominating the contest for the past two years. The straw poll counted the votes of 3,408 conservative activists who descended on Washington, D.C. for the three-day conference.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was the top choice for vice president, garnering 34 percent of the vote, with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie coming in second.
According to the Washington Times, Romney’s 38 percent win is the highest of any candidate since George W. Bush won in 2000 with 42 percent of the vote.
The straw poll results have no actual bearing on the GOP nominating contest, but are sure to be a boon for Romney, who has suffered from low enthusiasm among conservative voters.
For the first time, the CPAC straw poll also featured a national survey: In those results, Romney only narrowly beat Santorum 27 percent to 25 percent. Gingrich placed third again with 20 percent and Paul came in last with 8 percent.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 5:43pmOf course those who are the CPAC religious fascists represent less then 25% of republican voters. I guess they laid their hands on Romney. After hearing the speeches of the CPAC leaders (not candidates) I came to the conclusion these people are not very smart ,some even seem to be one gene short, and the young under educated believe anything their leaders tell them which are mostly lies.

Yes it had one ‘awkward’ moment but the rest of it was standing ovations and applauses. He earned it, he finally put the attacks aside spoke on his record and that is the Conservative Romney, talk about his record and he will win. Attack his opponents only and he may lose. Posted on February 11, 2012 at 9:02pmI’ve never seen a bunch of sore losers as there are on here:
1. Mitt is trying to buy the election. Duh. You can’t run for president unless you have a war chest. Obama has nearly 1 billion dollars and you think Rick or Newt can fight that ? They didn’t prepare, Mitt should win just for that alone.
2. The poll doesn’t mean anything. Really? Poll after poll keeps showing Mitt. He is the only one who has been consistent in the polls. Everyone else “peaks” and then “burns”. Mitt, again, deserves to be the nomination.
3. The MSM is picking our candidate. Dumbest statement ever. No, they don’t pick our candidates. They may be partial, but that doesn’t stop us from seeing the truth about Obama now does it. Those of you who can’t stand the idea of Mitt winning, yet you pick candidates who are worse than him, only show how much of a religious bigot you are.
Start acting mature. Give others the right to properly vet each candidate and make their own decision without you attacking them for picking Mitt. Give candidates the respect they deserve. It takes a lot of time and money to run for any office and to be disrespected with slander, name-calling, and gossip is more of why we are in this mess. Check your civility. Check your facts instead of regurgitating what you “think”. Go all out for your candidate, but use civility when your candidate is not winning.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 10:09pmHere’s, in part, what the CFR thinks of Romney.
“Domestic Intelligence
Romney has been a proponent of domestic intelligence gathering methods and has called for increased federal funding and participation in such measures. Romney’s opinion regarding the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretaps is unknown, but he clearly does not have qualms with domestic spying in general. In 2005, Romney made headlines by advocating the wiretapping of mosques (BosGlobe) within the United States. During his time as governor, Massachusetts opened a “fusion center” for enhanced intelligence analysis within the state. Romney has argued that individual states should play a larger role in domestic intelligence gathering.”

All of you that like to make assumptions about Romney and health care. Remember Gingrich was supporting a Federal Mandate when some of us were on the steps of the Capitol fighting ObamaCare. Something to ease your mind. Romney has always been a federalist, he has always fought to keep power out of DC, whether in 1994 or 2002. He will fight to repeal ObamaCare and with the help of a Republican Senate we will finally get rid of ObamaCare.
On the other hand Gingrich was still fighting for one up until his campaign fell apart in May 2011. He is still talking about a variation of the mandate for the federal government. Romney’s plan is to give power back to the state.

This information included diplomatic cables detailing critical infrastructure and installations, such as pipelines, cable locations, satellite communications sites, and vaccine factories, whose loss could critically affect U.S. national security. WikiLeaks also posted technical details of radio frequency-jammers used in Iraq by American soldiers to cut off signals to remotely detonated explosives and roadside bombs. The information released by WikiLeaks could help terrorists figure out better ways to bomb and kill more Americans.
The improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were responsible for many of the 4,287 deaths and 30,182 injuries suffered by American soldiers in Iraq.
An estimate published by McClatchy newspapers in March of this past year said that in Afghanistan alone, 617 troops had been killed and 5,752 wounded by IEDs. By this point, it said, the U.S. had spent $17 billion to find ways to disable the bombs.

I like most of his domestic policy. I admit that. However, his foreign policy is akin to Neville Chamberlin. Look at how many millions of people died because of his naive views.
Freedom has to be continually fought for. The only way to have peace, according to Reagan, is to surrender. The world is full of evil leaders, bent on world conquest. We had better be prepared to win. I find Ron Paul to be foolish enough to allow the evil to defeat freedom. The free world depends on us alone. Who else would save us, if we do not do it ourselves? Posted on February 12, 2012 at 12:22amKFalcon, you kind of answered you question to me in your statement itself.
If you are welcoming his domestic policy then you’ve come to the same conclusion on why he expresses the foreign policy perspective. We are broke, we are really ******* off a lot of citizens around the world with our one-size fits all concept of our way or the highway.
I agree that freedom has to be fought for, but not outside of the borders of the United States unless absolutely necessary and only by following the U.S. Constitution by having a war declared by Congress. Ron Paul will become known as likely the strongest candidate on foreign policy, but after what we’ve been dealing with for so many years of misunderstanding the Constitution it is no wonder that we are fearful of anything that moves. Your comment on Reagan doesn’t even make sense to me, sorry.
The world is full of evil leaders, but their people are envious of the liberty within the U.S.A. as it once was. This is very powerful tool in and of itself.
Can you explain your answers to how we can support what you say… “The Free World Depends On Us”. Where will the money come from? The free world depending on us is no different than living in an entitlement state, which your earlier comment on Paul’s domestic policy answers.
No one would likely be capable or willing to save us, therefore we need to be able to save ourselves, but how is it paid for?
You have to be willing to study the money, Ron Paul understands money.

His college aged, Liberal education system gomers, and Democratic Party talking point parroting supporters just didn’t feel comfortable marching in and out this year right after Paul would have been goldenly ruled out as an Obama-blame-America-firster…. and then maybe… booed off the stage.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 5:08pmLOL, time2reelectOBAMA. Keep supporting candidates that are the same as Obama. Its fine, I will sleep well knowing I have done the best I can for my family and voted for the best of my country.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 5:31pmAgain. How many Ron Paul supporters went and voted for Obama in 2008? Thousands, upon thousands. How many Ron Paul supporters supported Cynthia McKinney and Ralph Nader in 2008 because Ron Paul endorsed them?
Who helped Obama get into office in 2008? Ron Paul supporters.
And that’s just part of the story how Obama got there.
Go tell that BS to someone else.
Vote/write-in your conscience for a recognized perpetual loser and anti-American blame-America-firster….and vote… Obama. Again.
That’s the rest of the story.

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 6:19pmGuess what? If you people dont wake up you are going to get four more with Obama. Ron Paul offers contrast from Obama. So a vote for Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum is a vote for Obama. The four of them have similar polices. Voting for Ron Paul is voting for something different.
Tell me one policy Ron Paul has that is the same as Obama.
War? No
Spending? No
Taxes? No
Freedoms? No
Entitlements? No
Foreign Aid? No
The UN? No
The Fed? No
State rights? No
Can you say the same thing for the other three candidates?

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 7:11pmMUTINY. Chances are you weren’t even a fart in the wind when I first heard of and saw Ron Paul smoking a bong… sorry, banging a gong for his “mostly” warped and twisted views based on ideology and who knows what else.
I agree that the United States federal government has morphed into an eggregious behemoth, violating their own Constitutional jurisdiction on a daily basis. I believe that the federal government was created by the people, for the people, and that if we do not reign in their size and jurisdiction, it will one day represent the end of the Republic .
(fortunately, I have every confidence that we will be successful in that endeavor ….incrementally, again… incrementally) and Ron Paul has certainly helped in that discussion.
AND… Ron Paul, once you get past THAT discussion, completely leaves the railroad tracks into the fringe BS and leftist behavior on par with Obama.
You cannot convince me otherwise.

Snap out of it people!
Right now, the only thing on the news is Republicans beating each other up, instead of how crappy the economy is. Obama and the media have complete control of the narrative…because idiot Republicans keep destroying each other. Enough!

Posted on February 11, 2012 at 4:54pmIt just goes to show that the GOP is worthless. In all honest, if you think Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum are conservative you are crazy. We will lose the election not because Ron Paul supporters are not going to vote for another Mcain. We will lose this election there will be no real change from Obama to these men.
Romney – Romneycare, NDAA, anti gun, pro choice, Patriot Act, no spending cuts, more war.
Santorum – Patriot Act, voted for all Bush policy, no spending cuts, supports anti gun candidates, more war, and thinks the government is smarter than you.
Gingrich – Patriot act, amnesty, no spending cuts, supports global warming, more war.
None of those things are conservative principles!!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!!
Ron Paul 2012. I am voting for him even if I have to write his name in.

Amen to that, voting for any one of these three candidates will have no effect on our persisting problems brought by former neo-conservative (liberal Republican) President George W. Bush and Barack Obama the usurper-in-chief, except slowly, but surely, make them worse thanks to their neo-conservative policies. In fact, they only rarely bring up the importance of the Constitution, if ever.
Report Post »So, in a nutshell, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, or Rick Santorum 2012 if you want minimum freedom, more debt, more crony capitalism involving big banks and giant corporations, and more undeclared, unjustifiable warfare; Ron Paul 2012 if you want maximum freedom, sound money, and an end to those death-spreading, military/industrial complex-supporting wars.

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 8:23amGood for you. I attended the caucuses in Colorado. Ron Paul pulled 3 votes in my caucus. Santorum got 64 votes, Ron Paul 3. If RP can’t rise above last place in almost every vote. How can anyone expect him to 1) Win the nomination or 2) Beat Obama? Neither will happen with Paul. For one thing…..we nominated and Old Man the last go around only to have a tired old campaign that LOST. I support someone with Presidential stature, youth, intelligence and ENERGY. Santorum/Rubio 2012

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 12:28pm@mutany Okay man…..we get it…..You‘re going to vote for Obama if we don’t join the cult and vote for Paul. Sorry. Paul is older than the life expectancy for a man in the US. You really think at 80 he’ll be able to keep up the rigorous schedule of a President. Hell no……To vote for Paul means you really need to know who his VP is going to be. I expect Dennis Kacinich. Weak and Weaker 2012
Report Post »Ron Paul has never gotten anything done in all his years in congress. 1 bill of his ever saw the light of day. He packs bills that are destined to pass with pork for his district and then votes against the bills to make it look like he didn’t support the bill. He just supports the pork that he threw into the bill he didn’t vote for. He’s no conservative. Anyone who garnishes the support of Alex Jones and all the other conspiracy lunatics out there……doesn’t have a chance with reasonable and logical voters who do their own vetting of candidates.

Yes a brokered convention. Republicans need to start looking a little more broad in their platform otherwise the fall of “The Wigs” will be a good history lesson to get familiar with.
I get ostracized for pointing out the truth like this, but it’s still the truth. I’m sorry.

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 1:27pmLUKERW, by 2 points. That is close enough to re-count. Another state re-counted, and the “winner” was different than the one that the press called. This race is not over, even thouugh Romney appears to be the chosen one by whoever is calling the shots. Who knows? It’s a long way until the convention. If the voters make another wrong call this election, there’s no do overs. We all will lose big time! We all have to be sure we really know who we are voting for.
