Hat Trick: Mitt Romney Goes 3-for-3 in Tuesday Voting

WASHINGTON (AP/The Blaze) — Mitt Romney won the Maryland Republican presidential primary broadly and deeply, besting chief rival Rick Santorum among conservatives as well as moderates and emerging as the runaway favorite of those who care most about beating President Barack Obama and fixing the economy. The trend was similar if less convincing in Wisconsin, Tuesday’s other big win for Romney, where he made inroads with the right but faced a strong challenge for the votes of the young and evangelicals.
In both states, Romney found a greater degree of success among constituencies that had flocked in past months to the now-fading Santorum. Still, his campaign-long struggle to identify with lower income people and the less educated endures, a gap more meaningful in the general election ahead than in the Republican contests.
Romney’s win in Maryland was anticipated: the dimensions of it, perhaps beyond expectations.
For only the fourth time in the long campaign season, Romney won the support of a majority who called themselves conservative, according to preliminary results of an exit poll in Maryland. The only other such races were in Virginia, where Santorum wasn’t on the ballot; Nevada, with a large Mormon population; and Massachusetts, where he was governor.
Maryland was also one of Romney’s best showings among evangelicals — they made up one-third of the Maryland primary electorate — who had been a strong bloc for Santorum. That group was still a tough sell for Romney in Wisconsin, though, where he and Santorum split the votes of white born-again Christians.
Along with Ron Paul, a distant rival in the primary contest, Romney and Santorum vied closely for the support of voters 18-29, while Santorum scored strongly with those of the lowest incomes. Romney showed his usual strength among seniors and rich Republicans. But he also was besting Santorum among conservatives and tea party supporters.
In another measure of progress among conservatives, Romney had the edge with Wisconsin voters who said the government should do more to promote traditional values — a message at the heart of Santorum’s campaign.
Like him or not, Wisconsin voters were convinced Romney is on his way to the nomination. About 80 percent said he’ll win that race.
Voters Tuesday were among the least conservative to cast ballots in a primary season that saw the Republican race pulled sharply to the right. Even so, nearly half in Wisconsin said Romney was not conservative enough for their taste; 4 in 10 said the same in Maryland. Santorum had no trouble convincing voters Tuesday of his ideological bona fides, and about 3 in 10 in each state described him as too conservative.
But it was also apparent that the contest was about much more than that.
In Maryland, those most concerned about the economy supported Romney over Santorum by more than 30 percentage points. The economy was the top issue for about half of Maryland voters and an even bigger concern in Wisconsin.
Few voters in either state said they see the economy on the upswing. Only about 1 in 5 in Maryland and 3 in 10 in Wisconsin said the economy is improving. The next most important issue in both states: the budget deficit, which shaped how more than one-quarter of the primary-goers voted.
Romney won in Maryland among those age 45 and over, but he did best among seniors, besting Santorum by about 40 points. Santorum held an edge among those under age 45. But in nearly every other breakdown of voters — men and women, college education and not, rich and poor — Romney outperformed the field.
In both states, about 4 in 10 voters said the ability to beat Obama was the trait they most wanted in a candidate.
And in Whitefish Bay, Wis., Lana Adikes, 65, made the cold calculation that Romney was that candidate. “I think he’s the only one who can do it,” she said.
In the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield, restaurant owner Earl Richter, 58, also felt that pull, but didn’t give in to it. “I think anybody that can beat Obama is great,” he said. “I think Mitt Romney will do just fine. But my principles or my beliefs are just more in line with Rick Santorum,” so the former Pennsylvania senator got his vote.
The Supreme Court’s hearing last week on the 2010 health care law brought that issue to the forefront of the nomination campaign. Santorum criticized Romney’s record on the issue and appeared outside the Supreme Court to make the case that he is the candidate best suited to handle health care.
Wisconsin voters on Tuesday were split between Romney and Santorum as most trusted to manage health care policy, with about a third choosing each. About 1 in 6 said they trust Ron Paul most on the matter, 1 in 10 preferred Newt Gingrich.
About a third of GOP voters in Maryland and nearly 4 in 10 in Wisconsin said they were born-again or evangelical Christians.
In Wisconsin, Republican Gov. Scott Walker earned a 78 percent approval rating from GOP primary voters in the early exit polling. Walker will face a recall election in June.
Exit polls in Maryland and Wisconsin were conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research. This includes preliminary results among 1,238 Republican voters interviewed Tuesday as they left their polling places at 25 randomly selected sites in Maryland, and among 1,947 Wisconsin GOP voters as they left 35 polling places across the state. Results from both states have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Romney won D.C., where voters were not surveyed.
Romney also won the Washington, DC primary by an overwhelming margin.
Despite his three defeats, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum tried to place a silver lining on his campaign, as murmurs grow from conservatives who believe the former Pennsylvania senator’s campaign has come to the end of the road. While speaking in his home state after rival Mitt Romney secured victories in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia, Sen. Santorum acknowledged that the delegate race is only have way over, and the primary campaign has reached has reached halftime.
Santorum is predicting a win in Pennsylvania’s April 24 primary, and along with Newt Gingrich vows to compete in the rest of the GOP contests on the calendar.

Frankly, I thought you guys would elect someone else, like Paul or Gingrich or Santorum. But you, the Tea Party, have spoken loud and clear and your voice has been heard from state to state as you have brought the power of the Tea Party to bear. Now you have your champion, your standard bearer and man who stands strong and tall and man with unwavering convictions on both sides of every issue!

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 3:50pmMS-GLENNBC, I agree with a lot you say on here about Romney, about Glenn, about the RBPatriot Party idea. I still do not understand why you discount Paul. If it is his foreign policy, I guarantee you he has the best foreign policy for the times we are living in. With our economy the way it is, we need to do something drastic. Paul will not put the U.S. in any danger by shutting down the majority of bases around the world and bringing the majority of troops home. We need to protect our borders more than we need to protect others borders. No country has the ability to attack us with their military without us knowing. We have the strongest Navy in the world, I know as I am a Navy Vet, and it can take care of any threat anywhere in the world. Our Airforce is getting to the point that we can fly to other countries with unmanned aircraft within an hour. Isreal has the 4th strongest military, thanks to us, in the world and does not need our help with any country that surrounds them.
The biggest threat to our National Security is our economy. If we do not get a handle on it quickly, we could see our system fall along with our government, then where are we? Paul is the only one addressing this issue and he is the only one I see with a plan to stop all this in its tracks. But, keep up the good work on fighting the status quo candidate, Romney.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 8:25pmMS-GLENNBC, I understand your reasoning, but I think you are misunderstanding Paul. Whenever he is questioned on this partnering with Romney rumor, he says outright that he is not and that he and Romney are polar opposites. He knows that with the media blackout he gets, the establishment war against him and the election fraud being done by the GOP insiders, his only chance is getting the delegates needed for a brokered convention. That is the only way he has a chance at the nomination, so he goes after the candidates that may keep him from the delegates. The GOP has promised the nomination to Romney and nothing can be done in the states that gives winner take all delegates. This is what people have to realize. The vote is rigged, but they have a hard time rigging the delegates. Right now, Paul is in a close second to Romney with delegates, but you will never hear that through the media. They do not want him as he is the only real threat to their status quo. If Paul could pull this out of his hat at a brokered convention, he WILL defeat Obama by a landslide. He would throw this bus heading for the cliff into reverse and start to fix the destruction of the Bill of Rights that has been done over the last several decades. Nobody else will do it. As far as Glenn, he also is a lost sheeple who believes he has his act together. You and I know better.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 12:33pmBoycott, You are correct sir. Our biggest hope is for a brokered convention as I believe Paul WILL have over 1144 supporters as delegates to the convention. Even though some are bound on the first vote, they will be freed to vote for anyone they want on the second round of votes if nobody gets the magical 1144 on the first round. We need to keep a close eye on the GOP for more election fraud. They certainly do not want a brokered convention as at that point, they lose their control.

you’re a smart guy and i respect your opinions. however, you are not taking an objective and rational look at the republican nomination race. consider the following numbers from the most PROGRESSIVE districts in wisconsin:
Romney / Santorum
MADISON WD 39 — 21 / 83
MADISON WD 40 — 39 / 195
MADISON WD 41 — 48 / 195
MADISON WD 42 — 26 / 158.
indeed, contrast this with the the circuit races in the same districts:
Burz (Progressive) / Allen (Walker appointed)
MADISON WD 39 — 325 / 89
MADISON WD 40 — 756 / 221
MADISON WD 41 — 688 / 261
MADISON WD 42 — 561 / 78.
if you are still not convinced then please look at the statewide results:
Romney/Santorum
Democrat: 23% 43%
Republican: 51% 37%
Independent:37% 34%.
IT’S A FACT THAT THE LEFTISTS ARE ACTIVELY HOLDING UP THE SANTORUM CAMPAIGN!

The fact remains that romney would have much less delegates if there was just santorum or just gingrich in the race. Romney picked up a bunch of delegates in places like TN, AL, MS, GA , LA that he would have ZERO if there was just one conservative. This is why i said what i said about gingrich

If he could then the more Conservative Power players would have endorsed him & not Gov. Romney. To keep saying some sort of cabal or underhanded deal has been made smacks of denial & unjustified conspiracy theories. SANTORUM sealed his own faith when he weighed the pros & cons & chose to gain much needed traction by taking the “Contraceptive Bait” tossed out by the Obama Machine and running on it non stop for 3 weeks. That was a mistake & having his family stand behind him like ZOMBIES at every speech enhanced his 1950′s FATHER KNOWS BEST persona. I understand many Beck followers believe if you are right with God than God will straighten out all this mess. Problem with that is EVERYONE has to get on board for that to work & its NOT happening. Santorum 269
Gingrich 140

So Paul has half of the delegates that Gingrich does, about 1/4 of the delegates that Santorum does and about 1/10th the delegates that Romney does.
Now I know you will say “they are not bound delegates” Looking carefully I can only see 10 bound delegates for Paul. This leaves all the other bound delegates to the other candidates. And a fight for maybe 100 caucus type delegates.
That is the only math that matters.

Romney is a really bad candidate. I will not vote for him, nor will many who love the Constitution.
Romneycare
Budget with no spending cuts to current spending.
Supports the NDAA.
Supports the Patriot Act.
Believes we can continue our overseas warmongering.
Has supported abortion.
Has supported gun control laws.
Pro bailouts.
Yep more of the same, I will pass. If we even have an election in 2016 we will be lucky. Maybe next time you people will wake up.

Seriously, you guys don’t realize how retarded that sounds. You Paulbots are really the reason Ron Paul loses every time he runs for President! You alienate yourselves from normal people. Martinez has even called for “mutiny” if Ron Paul doesn’t win. Seriously, how many times has he run for President and how many times has he lost? I truly believe his biggest problem is his crazy supporters.
I do not support Ron Paul and yet I love the Constitution just as much as you do!!! I served 8 years in the Marine Corps – most of which was during wartime (light armored recon). I was willing to sacrifice my life to protect the Constitution – not just post about it. I’m now a lawyer who protects peoples constitutional rights – I don’t just post about it.
PLEASE – back off the “all the other candidates hate the constitution” crap! It only hurts your cause.

How can you support the Constitution and support bills like the Patriot Act and the NDAA? How can you support a candidate that has been pro gun restriction laws? Look, Romney will never say he is against the Constitution. His actions and his support shows he is against it. Same goes for Santorum, Gingrich, Bush, McCain, and all the other progressives we sheep have been tricked into voting for.
As for mutiny, you are right. I will continue to actively campaign for Ron Paul this year against both sides of progressives. Both Obama and Romney have budgets that cut zero from current spending. Does that sound fiscally sound? Romney cannot even bother to attack Obamacare without looking like a complete hypocrite since he has supported the health care mandate since 2009. Romney cannot attack Obama on his lies and failure to end the wars overseas but like a good progressive he is Unconstitutional wars that never really end. I think because Dr. Paul we have all become all too familiar with the FED. Well guess who is pro FED and bailouts along with Obama? You got it, Romney.
Look, I get you are voting for him because of religious reasons. Everyone should vote according to their principles and beliefs. I will do the same. I believe Romney is a fake who used government money to build his strong “private business” experience background. I believe Romney will say whatever he can to get elected. I believe he thinks he is the White Horse.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 3:05pmI am voting for Ron Paul The party needs to understand that principles of sound money, constitutional wars, and constitutional freedoms arent crazy, kooky, outdated, loony, and dangerous.
Romney as I have pointed out many times is better than Obama, but just barely. I have also pointed out the many similarities between Romney and Obama. We need radical change or our country is lost.
I have prepared my family for what is coming. I have explained to my four kids what is coming and why I believe what I believe its coming. This country will go one of two ways. Path one is towards a crushing socialist dictatorship after a civil war Or we will return to the principles of the founding fathers after a civil war. We had our chance to change things voting wise. Now, there is no correcting it I am afraid.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 3:15pm@DMERWIN – If all libertarians were as logical as you are about your vote, I think Ron Paul would have had a better chance. I actually agree with a lot of what Ron Paul espouses. I simply disagree with hit foreign policy. However, I would gladly vote for him if he was the nominee. Again, I think his cultish following scares some people… the whole “my way or the highway” approach many of them take.
Thanks for your service brother!

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 4:38pmP8triot, I do not look at people getting highly involved in trying to save our republic, cultist. I have been a Republican all my life, but the Republican Party has been doing just as much harm as the Democrats over the last several decades. As a veteran I can tell you Paul’s foreign policy makes more sense than keeping the military industrial complex in charge. Paul’s foreign policy is part of his economic policy and is the only way to get a handle on our failing economy. Paul, just like any other candidate, will not be able to accomplish anything without Congress behind them, except when it comes to our military. By shutting down 3/4 of the bases around the world, re-opening bases here at home, protecting our borders instead of foreign borders, we not only save billions ov dollars, but we also make our country safer. The whole idea that we are less secure by doing this is nonsense. If you are concerned about Iran and Isreal, you need not be as Isreal has the fourth strongest military in the world, thanks to us, and they can handle anything that happens over there. The media is not telling us the whole truth here and never has. They are puppets of the elite as they are owned by part of the elite. Paul would win against Obama by a landslide as he stretches across party lines where the others do not. I wish more people could see this.
Report Post »P8riot
Posted on April 4, 2012 at 6:57pm@WESTCOASTPATRIOT – You make a good presentation of your position. I agree that war sucks and none of us want these wars to continue any longer than necessary. I simply disagree that shrinking our military and our military presence around the world will make us more secure. As for saving money, I firmly believe we should do that in every other area of government spending before we do it to the military since national defense is one of the few enumerated constitutional obligations of the federal government..
Report Post »West Coast Patriot
Posted on April 4, 2012 at 8:37pmP8TRIOT, You are reading what I say but not getting the full story. We are weaker as a nation by spreading our military around the world. We have several bases that surround Iran right now for what? Oil!!. That is it. We need to stop this insanity. Our Navy could take on the entire world at war if need be without one single boot on the ground. We are not weaker by shoring up our borders with our troops, but safer as a nation. With the way things are right now, we are weaker with our open borders. The other thing about Paul and our National Defense is this: War should not be taken lightly and should not be started by one man or one man’s administration. We are supposed to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people. If there is a threat, Paul would ask Congress for a declaration of war (the people) and then he would go in strong, get the job done and then bring our troops home with no nation building. How many times would that happen before other countries start thinking twice about threatening us? He has the best policy, the Constitution.
Report Post »West Coast Patriot
Posted on April 4, 2012 at 8:46pmP8TRIOT, I also wanted to add that Paul does not want to cut defense spending, but military spending, there is a difference. We spend foolishly with our military budget on things we do not need like bases that are just there for no real reason, billion dollar embassies, and foreign aid to countries that do not even like us. He is for a strong National defense and continuously says so as it is a Constitutional priority of the federal government and Paul has more respect for the Constitution than all the other candidates combined.

Posted on April 3, 2012 at 9:52pmI’m prepared for us to nominate Romney, and if that happens, I know we’re going to lose, because he is the weakest and worst possible candidate. And I’m prepared for the country to survive it, after a whole lot of real disaster, that we wouldn’t have had to go through if we had been wise. If we had been the least bit sensible. If we‘d recognize that you can’t say you’re an idealist and give up on your ideals.
What we are seeing a lot of now, in the Republican party, is a lot of people who really have no will to live. Who are hoping for the best, and making sure they get the worst. Because nothing is real to them. Because they’re in a blur, a daze, and inside their suffering, they don’t care about anything.
No, that isn’t a projection of my own interior state. That is — a soliloquy.
What is wrong with some people. Everything. What is wrong with some people in power. Lack of courage. And no matter what else is right with them, if they lack courage, they destroy us.
None of this happens if we give up the unbearable idea of nominating Romney, and instead elect someone that, say, we like. Someone popular with a great record. Giuliani?
It looks like Santorum *almost* won Wisconsin! The endorsements… by people who don’t care about much of anything anymore, in their helpless daze…
Report Post »ksmike
Posted on April 3, 2012 at 10:17pmSorry, but I am really stretching to know who would be acceptable for all Republicans–Giuliani? Nope, not socially conservative enough. We tried Rick Perry. He couldn’t keep the image up for a national race. Chris Cristie? Again, fiscally conservative but not socially. Plus he has a temper.
And we look for another Reagan–the perfect conservative. He couldn’t win today. He raised taxes in California A LOT! And he set the pattern for amnesty–giving it to about 6 million during his presidency. Plus when he lowered the federal tax rate he also got rid of a bunch of deductions–which the Republicans proposed last year and almost got eviscerated. Plus he trusted the Dems. If he were alive today all you Beckers would call him an old fool, in spite of all the great things he did do.
So get off your condescending high horse, look at what Romney has been able to do in the public and private sectors and get behind him. We have to overlook flaws in everybody. He may not be charismatic but we already have that in a president and look what that got us. We need someone who can make the hard decisions and get us out of this hole. If we show some enthusiasm then we can get others excited. We need to get rid of Obama. We can do it if we show some positive mental attitude.

Romney loses by 10. It will be the establishments fault and the sheep that follow. Oh and Glenn, Bill, Sean, Rush, and Mark are all establishment hacks now.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 8:55pmMartinez, I agree. What happens in a brokered convention with as many Paul supporters as I think will be there? How many votes will it take? Paul supporters are not going to bow to anyone. It could go on to November! The GOP could be made irrelevant. The people on here do not underrstand the grave consequences of putting Paul and his supporters down the way they do. It could very well be their downfall. I cannot wait.

Ron Paul Letter to the GOP
Report Post »“I want to totally disassociate myself from the policies that have given us unprecedented deficits, massive monetary inflation, indiscriminate military spending, an irrational and unconstitutional foreign policy, zooming foreign aid, the exaltation of international banking, and the attack on our personal liberties and privacy,” he wrote in a letter offering advice to the Republican party: not a letter about the Obama administration — a letter about the Reagan administration. So Paul would have kept the Soviet Union intact.
Paul isn’t a conservative, he is a true NeoLib and should run as a Code Pink Demorat
THXll38
Posted on April 3, 2012 at 10:43pmYou’re right. Paul is not a conservative — he is a classical liberal. He wants the republican party back the way it was before the neo and social cons and pseudo conservatives took it over. Paul would have done exactly what Regan did — bankrupted Russia without firing a shot.

Posted on April 3, 2012 at 10:44pm@REPUB – looks like Ron Paul was correct even back then.
Reagan himself said govt is not the answer it is the problem.
Reagan did spend too much and started too many petty wars. But at least he believed in Freedom.
Now we fight wars to topple dictators and install islamaists. Where is the benefit in that.
The govt does not have the right to tell Americans how to live and it does not have the right to tell foreigners how to live, especially not with my money. You chickenhawks that put our men in the line of fire to do nation building and play bully to petty fools like Sadam Huissain need to understand the charter of this govt – to defend us and uphold the laws.
NOT to create healthcare and play God in foreign crap holes like Iran.
We need to jettison Saudi Arabia and let them fight their own wars and we need to get the hell out of Israel’s way and let them run their own policies. And we need to cut funding the pakis and europe’s defense.
Get a clue, big govt and our failing economy is what will bring this country down, not some **** hole nation like Iran.

and the worst part is that we would have to support Mccain in 2012 for his re-election. i shutter at the thought of 8 years of a republican who is not willing to seriously shrink government
