Mitt Romney’s Spokeswoman Said Something on Fox That Has Some People Worried — But Should They Be?

Despite having spent most of the Republican presidential primaries downplaying his “deeply problematic statist health-care expansion,“ Romney spokeswoman and former staffer for the McCain campaign Andrea Saul on Wednesday touted the ”benefits“ of ”Romneycare” while trying to call out Priorities USA for its “Romney Killed My Wife” ad.
When asked about the ad linking Romney to the death of the wife of Joe Soptic, a steelworker who lost his healthcare coverage after Bain Capital closed his plant, Saul responded: “To that point, if people had been in Massachusetts, under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had healthcare.”
Watch at the 1:25 mark [via Mediaite]:
Okay, what does this mean? Let’s avoid hyperventilating:
Let’s take a step back and try to evaluate what just happened.
First, why did Saul feel it was necessary to go there? She could have kept on point and, you know, focused on any of the following facts: Romney left Bain in 1999, top Obama bundler Jonathan Lavine was Bain‘s managing director at the time of GST’s bankruptcy, GST Steel was shuttered in 2001, Soptic’s wife passed away in 2006, and Soptic’s wife had insurance through her own employer.
Second, expect to see Saul’s “Romneycare” line appear in forthcoming Obama campaign ads. What better way to promote the premise and philosophy of President Obama’s landmark healthcare bill than with the words of his opponents?
Her denouncement of the “Romney Killed My Wife” video should have been easy! Instead, she took attention off the grossly inaccurate pro-Obama ad, made Team Obama’s “Obamacare” argument for them, and it looks like she may have reawakened conservatives concerns over “Romneycare.”
But is Saul’s “Romneycare” tout indicative of a bigger problem with the Romney campaign?
“It’s hard to say what type of political ramifications this specific development will have, but I do think it’s an example of a broader problem. Romney consistently attempts to make up with tactics what he lacks in vision,” writes the Washington Examiner’s Philip Klein. “Romney’s campaign isn’t driven by any core ideology or governing philosophy, but by responding to news cycles.”
“So, if Romney thinks touting his past support for government-run health care today can help defend against baseless attacks on his business career, then he’ll tout away, even if it’ll weaken the case against government-run health care he’ll make tomorrow,” Klein adds.
Final thought: Considering a recent offhand remark made by Romney himself, perhaps Saul’s “slip up” wasn’t such a “slip up” after all.
By Klein’s own admission, the Romney campaign is stocked with tacticians. Is there a broader strategy at play here? If there is, we’re not sure we like it.
UPDATE: Whoa. Conservative authoress Ann Coulter on Wednesday appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” and, good grief, she is absolutely furious with Saul.
“Her response was not that it was despicable, not that Bain … that Romney had left Bain five years earlier or the woman died five years after the plant closed and didn’t even get her insurance from her husband, her response was, ‘Well, if she had lived in Massachusetts with Mitt Romney’s health care plan, she would have had health insurance,’” Coulter said.
“Anyone who donates to Mitt Romney, and I mean the big donors, ought to say if Andrea Saul isn’t fired and off the campaign tomorrow, they are not giving another dime, because it is not worth fighting for this man if this is the kind of spokesman he has,” she continued, “She should be off the campaign.”

We have “Crooked” politicians by the dozens, some who have been in the Senate and Congress for well over 20 years and “Newbies” who will eventually get “Greedy” themselves and forget that the people of the United States gave them there job and quite an “Equitable” one at that. There is one scene from the movie “Planet Of the Apes” that has always stood out in my mind and it’s a shot of the “Statue Of Liberty” thrown on a beach except half of it is missing. This country is not far behind that “Movie” and it is very close to being a “Reality”. There are no great “Presidents” left just as there is no good “Music”.

Tyranny on either side of the isle is still tyranny.
To support either candidate is to turn your back on constitutional principals and sends the message that the Tea Party can be easily manipulated and used against the very principals it has advocated for.
Mitt has refused us a spot at the convention and has refused to support Tea candidates in the primaries. It should be obvious to anyone in the liberty movement that Romney is refusing us a seat at the table and we should vote accordingly.

I hope that he becomes the great conservative hope that this nation needs. That he tackles the debt and institutes the painful measures necessary to stop the slide into oblivion.
I hope that he stands up to our enemies and puts a little fear in ther heart.
I hope for a lot of things, but right now I don‘t think he’s that man. And I do believe that he was shoved down our throats by men in the GOP who have become Iconoclastic power brokers.

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 8:41pm@ RANGER1965 – Agreed! Point well taken.
In a sinking ship, you plug the biggest hole first (and quickly)! It may not stop the ship from sinking, but it gives you more time to find and fix the other holes that threaten. Our problem is all the left over, die-hard, left leaning Republicans that remain in office that decided a liberal leaning Republican like Romney would be better able to win votes away from Obama.
As has been said – we are still paying for the sins of the past. It will take more than a single change of office to correct what Americans permitted to happen to our government over the last 100 years.
We must remain vigilant in the coming years to tell Romney how he can best serve his employers (we the people), and be as passionate about replacing liberal/progressive congressmen and senators, republican and democrat, in the future as we are about drumming Obama out now before he can do any more damage.
If Romney seems weak willed then maybe his desire to bow to the majority means he will listen to Christians and Conservatives, who together still make up the majority population in America. Just maybe we can take this first step to healing our great country.
A vote for anyone else other than Romney assures Obama’s victory … !

It isn’t going to do us any good if Obama is re-elected, as he will take us over the cliff and will be King of America before his next four years are done. Now he’s sucking up to the right, even the far right, in order to get your vote, but I‘d challenge you to give me a single major issue that he supports now that can’t be contradicted by previous statements or his actions as Govenor.
Romney can’t run on his record as Govenor because the economic record under his stewardship was abysmal, one of the worst in the nation. And he sure can’t run on his single notable accomplishment in office: healthcare for everyone in his state. Everybody hate the idea of the poor getting healthcare, because, you know, they are all lazy bums as Christ himself said. So he can’t run on that.
So he’s trying to run on the fact that he made millions at Bain. Hundreds of millions in fact. And we know he paid less taxes than you in that job, we just don’t know how much. And he isn’t going to tell “you people” how much less. I can’t blame him. If I were running for President and knew my tax returns would sink my campaign, I wouldn’t release them either. I’d be faced with a choice of releasing them or hiding them, and I’d hide them and argue that everyone should be okay with that.
Everyone hates Romney. He’s the rich kid in school that thought you were beneath his notice. And to this day, he’s beneath your notice, except to get your vote.

I have been talking about this for quite some time but it seems nobody wants to realize the truth!! What is wrong with America? People have become too lazy. Romney will not win. He just will not!! This story is more proof of this. He has no principles, he tells you what his advisors tell him you want to hear. They are not very good at it. I am telling all of you that, if you want to see the Republican Party win the Presidency, you are going to have to tell the delegates of your state that you want them to vote for Ron Paul for nomination, since they will not be bound. It is our only chance to defeat Obama. We need a candidate that can stand up to Obama on the Constitution, Individual Liberty, sound fiscal priorities and the like. A lot of people voted for Obama in ‘08 because of his stance on pulling out of war, but he failed his voters miserably and they will not look to Romney for that, they would look at Paul. Look deep inside yourself and you will find the answer. Do you really want to kick the can farther down the road to your grandchildren? Do you? I do not.

Or I can go to the polls: And participate, and pull the lever for Liberty, even if my vote is as equal as staying at home. At least I can say I tried…
I was willing to pull the lever for Mitt, even if his policies were similar to Obama, but I will not vote for a lier. Now I FEEL like he is being dishonest….before I THOUGHT he could be…but now I feel like he IS…
One of the things that has bothered me about Obama and who will follow him is that he (Obama) has pulled the overton window of truth telling as far as it can go towards lies, that the person following him could possibly feel like he can get away with lies as long as they were not as often, or as big as Obama lies…..

Posted on August 9, 2012 at 2:16amYep. Problem is, when Obama’s peons paint Romney as a clueless out-of-touch East-coast hyper-rich guy, they are absolutely right. It‘s not because he’s rich; plenty of very wealthy people understand the problems we face and some of them even live in the East. It’s simply because Romney is an idiot. His work at Bain never involved any kind of real business experience: his job would have been almost entirely fundraising. This is how private equity works: the big man’s job is to raise cash. There’s nothing wrong with that, except that it trained him to raise money but not to campaign effectively. I continue to believe that Romney has never had any plan to win this election. His goal was to be the candidate, not the President.

With the hundred-millions being supposedly spent on making Mitt “Mr. Right” why would his massive campaign not have the best minds in the business tearing Obama a new one daily? It’s either incompetence or calculated failure at this point. Since both candidates are controlled by the same entities why would one not throw the fight? This is what happens when the banks play the part of Don King in the ring of our national future. I implore all who love this country to step back and shake the sleep from your eyes. To use @rangers analogy, should we choose to eat either s*#t sandwich when election after election a warm BLT with a side of freedom fries sits humbly nearby? Dr. Ron Paul has been on the side of the Constitution his whole career. He is neither a Muslim nor a Mormon but a church-attending Christian. He opposes big government and was one of the few who fought the NDAA and stood up for the bill of rights against each incursion from both party. He champions what most of the good folks here desperately seek but is ridiculed without understanding. If Dr. Paul is not the individual opposing he-who-shall-not-be-named this November then I strongly advise each of you to bury some supplies and hang on to your butts. The future of this nation depends on you making the right choice, right now.

Posted on August 9, 2012 at 8:31pmWestCoastPatriot, I watched every one of the Republican presidential debates. I listened to Ron Paul’s own words. His domestic policies I agree with…small government, abolish the Fed and many other useless departments. But I do not agree with some of what he said about foreign policy….close some of the military bases in foreign countries I agree with but I can’t agree with letting Iran get nuclear weapons, among some of the things he said. Rand Paul I like very much and would vote for gladly.
I know Romney is not the candidate yet but he did win a lot of the primaries. Ron Paul didn’t win any. He won a lot of delegates by positioning them and in one case, ousting the sitting party chairman at the state convention (Alaska). The Paul-supporting delegates are threatening to not vote for Romney even though they are bound to do so. His back up plan since January has been to use delegates as a bargaining chip to extract concessions at the GOP convention…… either a prominent speech or the inclusion of his views in the party platform that will be approved in Tampa. Mainstreaming his ideology or embarrassing Romney at the convention are some of the goals of Paul’s supporters. Causing mayhem at the convention is on the table.
If he were the nominee, I‘d vote for him but I’d be afraid of a nuclear Iran. ABO = ANYONE BUT OBAMA.

Posted on August 9, 2012 at 2:22amDivine, What ?? This writer is on some kind of hard drugs. The way you fight a war to victory, is doing it Constitutionally, and Goldwater knew that. For a President to acknowledge a war and talk about victory, there needs to be a declaration, or it is just a police action, and there never is a plan for victory as we are just fighting to keep peace. Read between the lines will you?
“We here in America can keep the peace only if we remain vigilant and only if we remain strong. Only if we keep our eyes open and keep our guard up can we prevent war. And I want to make this abundantly clear – I don’t intend to let peace or freedom be torn from our grasp because of lack of strength or lack of will – and that I promise you Americans.” – Barry Goldwater
He is talking about America preventing war by remaining strong, How do you remain strong? Well not by bankrupting your country for one. But by staying economically stable and by using our military budget to strengthen our defense and not by sending our money overseas to be used by the supposed enemy. We do need to keep our guard up and today we could do that by bringing our troops home, from protecting foreign borders, and protecting our own. If we see aneed to go over seas to fight, have a declaration and then we can have an actual plan to go in, get the job don
Any politician who would follow the Constitution and actually protect and defend it, would be a great statesman for the people.

Posted on August 9, 2012 at 2:37amTXDave, Yes, at this point and time, we are more like a democracy and not the Republic we were meant to be. Democracy IS socialism in this sense. It is mob rules. It is 51% of the people telling the other 49% how they have to live their lives. That can be alright in some ways, but when the democracy is wrong, it is very dangerous. We need to see a Republic in action this election, more than ever. We need the people to wake up to the realities and tell their delegates that they want them to nominate Paul on the first round, since in a Republic, the delegates are not bound. Binding delegates to one candidate based on majority vote, is democracy. A republic will unbind delegates for the sole purpose of talking with each other, when it is found that the presumptive nominee by majority cannot win, in order to change their vote to one who can. That is a Republic at work.

Posted on August 9, 2012 at 2:48amDivine, You would go to the polls and vote for a criminal? You would go to the polls as a, what, conservative and vote for a candidat that leans so far left he is about to fall over? You would go vote for a candidate that set the standard for Obamacare, and his spokesperson is praising it? Where are your principles? Do you think that Paul, if he had been governor of Massachusetts during the period Romney was, would have instituted what would be known as Paulcare, the precursor of Obamacare? You know the answer is no. Why? Because Paul is about the people, giving the power back to the people that has been stolen from us. He is about fairness to each and every person in the U.S., not just the rich. Believe me, I was blind myself until four years ago. I have seen the future and it is grim. I just want a chance for my grandchildren to have a chance at freedom like I used to have freedom.

Ron Paul thinks that“ EVERY country should have nuclear weapons”..(INCLUDING those nations dedicated to wiping us INFIDELS off the face of the earth, AND whose basic religious tenet rewards those who die in annihilating us-)-in the interest of “fairness”.
He also favors making marijuana legal.Odd, a doctor usually is one of the FEW who know that smoking it kills brain cells and is a “gateway drug”…Also, he is old and basically unelectable due to the radicalism of his disciples…
Romney and co. are caught in the dilemma of the “honest man”. He and his workers have NOT learned to guard EVERY WORD THEY SAY, lest their impulsive responses are POUNCED on by people used to twisting words to their own ends. They’re LEARNING, but it takes YEARS of cunning and duplicity to get as smooth as their adversaries!
PS. Romney DID say that the FIRST thing that he would do upon attaining the Presidency would be to eradicate Obamacare. …which, in its bloated Federal bureaucracy doesn’t resemble the Massachusetts-model, except in its media-label. Too bad no one seems to be able to compare the 2000plus page T-Rex Obamacare to its more slender, admittedly experimental Massachusetts “inspiration”…
But..rave on Paul-people, I don’t expect you to listen to reason..

Angelina Spencer, the executive director of the Association of Club Executives, which serves as a trade association for strip clubs, said an informal survey of convention business in New York and Denver had determined that Republicans dropped more money at clubs, by far.
“Hands down, it was Republicans,” she said. “The average was $150 for Republicans and $50 for Democrats.”
As further evidence of the clubs’ nonpartisan appeal, Don Kleinhans, the owner of the 2001 Odyssey, said when the Promise Keepers, a male evangelical group, came to town years ago, business was rollicking.
“We had phenomenal numbers all weekend, and they walked in wearing badges and name tags and weren’t shy at all,” he said.

Lets make that a strong conservative crowd and turn Romney into Ronald Reagan. The Rinos are being taken down one by one. In 10 years the party will be purged and we will have a good conservative president; but this cycle none of the tea party type conservatives were ready to be president. I like Michelle Bachman, but she looked like a deer in the headlights. Ron Paul‘s hates the republican electorate ’neocons’ too much to win any of thier support. Cain was a fraud, Santorum was weak and Gingrich was a trojan horse. Who was left after that? Posted on August 8, 2012 at 6:57pmEVERYONE NEEDS TO REMEMBER THAT OBAMACARE IS FEDERALLY RUN…
The biggest difference between RomneyCare and ObamaCare was that one was a state run program and the other was a federally run program. Romney has always been a strong States Rights person. RomneyCare has problems such as the mandate, as Romney has said. The problems would have been fixed if he stayed in as Governor, but he destroyed those chances when he started to fight against gay marriage and for stronger immigration laws in his state. Those were the two last battles he championed while in Massachusetts.
Romney will give states the right to create their own programs. If some decide something like RomneyCare that is a states right, not the Federal governments. And if a state chooses that, I am sure that a large portion of the residents will move to where there is more freedom, much like what happened in New York when they raised taxes on the rich. The rich got moving. (Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, etc) We all have the freedom to leave a state if they push bad policy. Also remember that RomneyCare did have some great points to them, the free market exchange that Romney tried to set up, deregulating the insurance industry… before the dumb dems added a whole bunch of new regulation.
ROMNEY WILL REPEAL THE BURDENSOME OBAMACARE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, GIVING THE STATES BACK THEIR RIGHTS.

Not so fast, my friend:
———————–
“Over the five-year life of the new law, total cost has been $9 billion, with the federal government picking up nearly 64 percent of the cost, the state’s share is more than 18 percent, and the remaining 18 percent split by hospitals and insurers, who pass it along to their customers, to pay into the Health Safety Net fund, which reimburses providers for treating the uninsured. The federal share consists of the usual 50 percent reimbursement for Medicaid, supplemented by stimulus money and additional funds awarded the state for its innovative program to subsidize insurance of the working poor.
Many of the more than 400,000 Massachusetts residents who have become insured since the law’s enactment receive coverage paid in whole or in part with public funds.”

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 10:08pmFast, I beg to differ. Romneycare shows Governor Romneys’ proclivity toward big government control of market sectors that should be handled privately. While I‘ll agree with you that it’s not as intrusive on the state level as it is on the federal level, I don’t see that as a substantive difference.

The state cannot make laws that are unconstitutional. All laws in every state that defies the Bill of Rights to the people is unconstitutional. States cannot force people to purchase a product anymore than the federal government can. Yes, this even means auto insurance, but we have always just gone along with it as though they had the right to do so. We have been a socialistic country for a long time now. Drivers licenses are unconstitutional for the American who is not using the roads for profit. Nobody is threatening you with a gun? Really? Let’s even use the tiny little lens of Obamacare.
The individual mandate right? So let‘s say I don’t buy insurance. Fine. No guns yet. So the IRS says “you didn‘t buy insurance so here’s tax on your return.” Let‘s assume that I pay tax and aren’t part of the 47% that don’t. (I have a theory that might be you…but I digress) So I say to the IRS, screw you, you can’t tax me for not buying something, that’s stupid. I’m not paying it. So the IRS says “Oh yeah, well now you’re a tax cheat and we are going to press charges on you.“ At which point you say ”you can’t arrest me for not buying insurance, that’s BS.” So some time passes and a warrant goes out for your arrest. You tell the cops, “you ain’t going to jail for not buying insurance”. The cop says “wrong, get in the car”. You say “nope” and guess what happens next? A freaking gun gets pointed at your head by some Barney Fife order following union a$$hat.
But no, it’s just a fantasy…so long as I comply right?

Report Post »If you did you‘re homework you’d realize that the individual mandate, enacted by Romney in MA, was conceived by the very right wing Heritage Foundation.

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 6:49pmLegal? That’s your litmus test on the POTUS? You’re kidding right?
It’s legal because he made it law and the courts were all appointed by people left of Ted Kennedy. Furthermore, it sorta demonstrates his view on things right? Hey Mass-holes…you don’t like it then leave. As for the rest of you, pay up. Oh yeah, small business? Pay up. One more thing, all of you …hand over your guns.
But once he’s POTUS, he’s going to be a conservative stalwart.
Like I saw earlier today, you write back to those Ethiopian princes wanting to give you money right?
But again that was all “legal”

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 6:54pmSCOTUS disagrees with you and has ruled we can be taxed for not purchasing a product, I believe it‘s unconstitutional as well but my say so didn’t count when they ruled.Robert’s based his ruling on the fact that the feds have the power to tax us,which allowed him to rule the way he did.The health care law is tyranny simple as that and I also don’t believe the feds have the authority to tax us,after you stop laughing read this. http://thelawthatneverwas.com/

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 7:09pmLook at California for an example of state level vs. Federal. In California people are raised to be Dumb A$$e$, penalized if you are too successful, and encourage everyone to try sodomy or alternative lifestyles.
At the Federal level, we elect Dumb A$$e$, they do penalize everyone for being successful, and they try to commit sodomy on america.
So, you can see the difference between state and federal, I can choose not to live in California and keep my behind safe, if the Feds start doing it, I have no choice and a sore hiney.

Just as you can choose not to live in California, you can choose not to live in America if you don‘t like the way it’s being run. In fact that’s what all of you should do. LEAVE!!!
