Mitt Romney’s Tough Cookie Moment: Former Mass. Governor Inadvertently Insults Beloved Pennsylvania Bakery

Of all the foodstuffs to give a Presidential candidate a headache, cookies might be the least likely – but hey, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Mitt Romney, while visiting an event in Pittsburgh today, reacted skeptically to a plate of cookies he was served, telling the attendees, “I’m not sure about these cookies. Did you make those cookies? You didn’t, did you? No. No. They came from the local 7-Eleven bakery or wherever.”

As it happens, the cookie came from a beloved local bakery called Bethel Bakery, whose owner immediately felt insulted by Romney’s comparison of his products to a 7-11′s cookies. As a result, liberals are gleefully pouncing on the incident as yet another episode of Romney swallowing his tongue (in this case, along with some apparently delicious baked goods). In fact, the DNC sent out a mocking picture over twitter bearing the hashtag “Cookiegate,” which can be seen below:

Mitt Romney Misspeaks on Cookies from Pittsburghs Bethel Bakery; Cookiegate EnsuesFunnily enough, while the bakery owner is upset, 7-11 isn’t. At all. In fact, as a part-joke, the company is sending Romney’s campaign a huge box of cookies prepared for their store:

Mitt Romney’s ill-conceived observation on Tuesday that a plate of cookies looked like they might have come from a “local 7-Eleven” was, clearly, an unflattering commentary on the quality of the esteemed nationwide convenience store’s baked goods. But, surprisingly, the company isn’t upset at the presumed GOP nominee. Because, even though Romney was insulting 7-Eleven’s cookies, at least someone was finally acknowledging the cookies! ”Mitt Romney is right,” glass-half-full 7-Eleven spokesman Margaret Chabris told us just now. “There are bakeries dedicated just to delivering and making fresh baked goods every day, 365 days a year, for 7-Eleven stores. So we were very amused, because he got it right.” Chabris added that, to show Romney what he’s missing, 7-Eleven is even going to “send some [cookies] to his campaign headquarters in Boston so he can try them out.” He’ll be so thrilled!

Meanwhile, the Democrats’ new “cookiegate” hashtag isn’t exactly getting the reception they want on Twitter:

Well, I can say that Bethel Bakery has very, very pretty cakes to look at, the taste isn’t so great. I wonder if the cookies are the same- nice to look at but not so tastey. It’s not a bad taste but I would pay lots of $$ for a Giant Eagle cake but decorated by Bethel Bakery.

    @bpodlesnik- If insults Primanti’s, it’s all over!!!

But the Obama administration has repeatedly told us that inflation rates are negligible. I‘m sure you’re mistaken about the price of gasoline being $4 a gallon. It just can’t be. Obama says so.

      (end sarcasm)

I for one don’t get what is wrong with the cookies. Romney didn’t know where they came from apparently and where I live, the 7-11 sells some damn good cookies.

We all know the primary is over and Romney is the guy. As hard as it is for Paul fanboys to accept (ekhem…) let it go man. It’s done. Let’s do what we can from here to come together and rid ourselves of this commie president.

As far as the Obama campaign/administration… they are going down hard. While I don’t diminish the fact that they are all cooks who will try to lie, cheat, and steal this election, they are a fkn joke. Here’s just a few reasons Obama is going to lose in November.

1)Hope and change is no longer Obama’s phrase, Its Romney’s.
2)The distaste for Bush which helped Obama get elected, is as palatable as the current distaste for Obama himself.
3)Obama’s class war rhetoric is his only issue, and appeals ONLY to his progressive base, and half of OWS won’t even support the guy.
4)Independents in swing states will decide this election, and Obama hasn’t done dikc for ANY of them.
5)Because of the rise of the Blaze and other counter-balance media dissemination sites, the Right finally has a more level playing field, which is HUGE!

While I wouldn‘t say it’s in the bag, Obama is the true underdog.

@Lib, I voted for Paul in my primary. I’m not a fan of Romney either but he is what we got. If Paul supporters don’t quit bitching and vote against Obama, they are condemning this nation to communism. How many supreme court justices will Obama appoint over the next four years? 2? 3? Do you have any brain power to foresee what that is going to do to us? There will be NO coming back.

Paul is not going to be the nominee, so stfu about it. Some of us are interested in making money and providing for our family over the next decade, and Romney will allow that. Obama won’t. Quit your pity party and cancel out an Obama vote. A NO vote is a vote for OBAMA!!!

AndySmandy, You are a liar, man. The primary is not over yet and Paul is going to be a contender at the convention. But, if Romney does end up with the nomination, all you Romneyites can kiss my you know what. The Republican Party is filled with a bunch of ignoramuses that still think they can win on their own. Well, it is not going to happen, sorry. Obama will most likely win because, by nominating Romney, you lose the disenfranchised Dem vote, you lose the young vote again, you lose most of the majority of Paul supporters either to a third party or they will write in his name. All you Republicans think you are soooo smart, but you are actually soooo ignorant to think Romney can win. Well, when this country heads down the dark path into oblivion of Marxism, you all can feel soooo proud of yourselves.

With that said, if Romney is the nominee, Obama and him are so much alike, this is all they can do, try to make the other one look worse. It will be nothing but personal attacks all the way. Obama will probably win on the personal attacks and become a second term president and we will all soon be calling each other comrade.
