MLK’s Niece Alveda King Spars With Jesse Jackson Over Occupy Wall Street & Civil Rights

Over the weekend, America learned that the Rev. Jesse Jackson sees similarities between Occupy Wall Street and the nation’s civil rights movement. But his comments, which sought to offer support for those individuals who continue to rail against the current capitalist system, also drew the ire of of Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece, Alveda King.

As we reported, Jackson told protestors, “Do not let difficult times break your spirits. In all things, keep your eyes on the prize. Renew your faith, keep your hope alive and victory is assured.”

“Only when the foundation shakes does everybody make an adjustment,” he continued. “The people are saying we need economic justice, we need shared economic security. We are free but not equal.”

These comments caused King, the director of Priests for Life African American Outreach, to respond with strong words for the civil rights leader. “I believe that Rev. Jackson is doing a disservice,” King said yesterday on Fox News. “My uncle, the whole [civil rights] movement, was founded in prayer, in crying out to God in a peaceful movement. And this [Occupy] movement is not peaceful.”

She continued, claiming that Jackson needs to “revisit his 20th century history.”

“They wanted something that would give them solutions, something that would make things better, and what they’re doing now, Rev. Jackson knows that this is not the model that my uncle and my father, Rev. A.D. King, upheld,” she said.

Watch her comments, below:

In addition to making these statements, King went on to claim that she believes that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is involved in the protests (this is something that the Blaze has explored extensively).

In an interview with Politico, Jackson shot back, claiming that Occupy Wall Street is, indeed, tied to the civil rights movement. “The mass appeal of economic justice [and] economic security is a critical civil rights issue of our time,” he said. “It is a crying out for economic security because the wealth gap, the income gap, the insured gap has gotten so very wide.”

Jackson also went on to say that if Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive today, that he would be among the protestors. “Dr. King planned to occupy the mall in Washington, and planned to engage in civil disobedience to get … Washington to get their priorities straight,” he said.

Guarantee that jessee comes back with some ‘special knowledge’ of MLK‘s intentions that she doesn’t know that co-opts the entire movement to his whimsical interpretations that exclude some Americans while still sending a message of ‘inclusion’ as its principle. Too many paradoxical principles usually mean dubious intentions.

I admire Alveda King’s stance against abortion. She is one of few blacks that speaks against it. She is brave and has been ridiculed just like a lot of blacks ridiculed Herman Cain. America is in a sad racist state when a person cannot be “judged for their character, rather than their color.”

Living in Atlanta, I’ve been fortunate to meet Dr. Alveda King several times. She is a true woman of character, unafraid to buck the system in order to speak the truth. She understands The Dream and sees how it has been twisted by those who use it to keep people down rather than lift them up. She is not out for fame and glory as so many of the Civil Rights leaders are. Both her Uncle and Daddy are smiling down at her right now.

Thanks for stepping up, Dr. King. You have the heart to change things in the right direction.

@ blattack: You referenced Daniel 2:44 and I‘m assuming the point you’re trying to make is that there will be a future kingdom? The problem is the kingdom is already here. Heb. 11:28 Therefore, since we (1st century Christians) are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Acts 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.” Rev. 1:9 I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ…. John wouldn’t have said he was *in* the kingdom if it were some future event. The kingdom is a spiritual kingdom, not a physical one and it’s here now. Those who hear and obey the word of God are in the kingdom today.

Jackson has long been a marxist. About 4-5 years ago, in an interview with Neil Cavuto, called for “democracy of capital”. This is marxist code language for collectivist control of ALL property. In his mind, there is NO private property. YOU don’t own anything because it all belongs to the “collective”. Cavuto didn’t cue in to this language and gave Jackson a free pass.
