Two mixed martial arts fighters applied their grappling and takedown moves in Los Angeles last Sunday night, outside of the octagon. Los Angeles Police say that MMA fighters Brent Alvarez and Billy Denney are responsible for stopping a would-be robber of a LA motel, and video posted by the department shows the two takedown and put the gun-carrying suspect in a chokehold :
The Los Angeles Times writes of the fighters who came off the elevator just in time to save the day:
“Alvarez, who owns a mixed martial arts studio in Eugene, Ore., and Denney, one of his students, were getting off the elevator just before midnight Sunday when they stumbled on the suspect forcing the motel clerk at gunpoint to empty the cash drawer.
The clerk yelled, ‘Gun! He robbed me!’ Alvarez said he saw a flash of the weapon before the suspect plunged it into his bag with the money.
A former hip-hop club bouncer, Alvarez said that 10 years of training in self-defense and defusing conflict kicked in. The suspect didn’t seem to want to hurt them, either, Alvarez said, but kept insisting he did it for his daughter.”
The fighter told the Times that the robber did not seem too aggressive, but just like “someone who had run out of options.” Authorities arrested the 31-year-old suspect who was carrying a loaded 9-millimeter handgun. The suspect, Luis Rosales, has been booked on $101,250 bail.
The two fighters are competing Saturday in the World Jiu-Jitsue No-Gi Championship in Long Beach.

Posted on November 6, 2011 at 1:06amThat was the calmest reaction to being robbed ever. The guy just walks into the office with a gun, and the clerk doesn’t even budge. I could almost hear him saying, “Oh gee golly…I’m being robbed……whaaaaaatever.”

Mapache
Posted on November 6, 2011 at 6:11amToo many cops use tasers because they are either poorly trained, out of shape or both. Tasers have a legitimate role in law enforcement but too often they are used because some stupid, lazy and out of shape law enforcement officers see the taser as a reason they do not have to subscribe to the warrior ethos.

your question is pretty stupid. What if a cop who weights 120 lbs is a female, and has to arrest a 220 lbs jiu jitsu fighter? Cops wear a vest, a belt with a radio, pistol…. They are not dressed for submission grappling. While it is a good skill for a cop to have, it is not the way it is done.
If you do not want to get the juice or the pepper spray, follow the laws, and do what the police tell you to do.

Report Post »Most cops do not have the training to SAFELY take down anyone, unless the person is willing. The matial arts guy new exactly how to respond, grab on and let the bad guy wear himself out. It is the same as asking why a cop can’t throw a 90 yard touch down pass, most can’t some may. I train (boxing) with 2 police officers and they take it serious, most don’t train at all other than what the department provides twice a year…. and most are even worse shots.

Posted on November 6, 2011 at 10:48amHey JMORCAN,
I guess you expect the cops to come prepared to fight huh? LMAO!!!!!! I was on a ride along with a good friend of mine when he got a call to back up an Officer who was responding to a domestic dispute with an alert that a husband was high on drugs. We got there within a minute after the responding Officer‘s arrival and saw a 6’ 10″ 300 plus pound husband who was going berserk on the front lawn. The responding Officer attempted to get the subject’s attention verbally but he was so out of control that my friend had to tasered him to get him cuffed and taken into custody. Of course the wife then freaked out when she saw her husband went down, but that’s another story………LOL!! So despite my friend’s training in Aikido, do you expect him to confront this enormous of a guy by taking him down physically? I don’t think that would be considered “Common Sense.”

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 4:23pmIn the City of Lakewood, Washington about 4 years ago, 4 police officers were killed by a lone gun man. The officers were on break. Two were eating and shot in the back of the head. Another officer grappled with the shooter who took his gun and shot him. The fourth and final officer made no attempt to draw his service weapon, advanced toward the shooter and was killed. All officers were highly trained and experinced.
Grappling isn’t the best idea. It looks good on tv but in real life puts the officer and any bystanders in a dangerous position.

Posted on November 6, 2011 at 8:23amI believe Machiavelli is the one responsible for the statement “the end justifies the means.”
The basic interpretation of “the end justifies the means” is:
“At the beginning of an action I might not be able to determine whether that action is morally right or wrong, but when the morally right goal is successfully achieved, then the steps which led to it must be morally right too.”
When a little twist is introduced to this interpretation, it becomes:
“I shall do a minor evil to achieve a greater good.” or
“My aim for greater good makes all the evils I have done right.”
This is exactly the opposite of what the Bible teaches. MORALITY is determined and defined by God. It is set and will not change under any condition. God has given us the Bible so we can know what sin and morality are. Stealing from someone else is clearly defined as a sin in the Bible. The Bible also states that one who sees a man who is in need and who does not help him is also guilty of sin as well. Respecting God and His word……….. The answer to this nations problems!!!!
