Mom Arrested After Cheering Too Loudly At Daughter’s Graduation

Saturday night’s South Florence High School graduation ceremony was marred by an event that required police action. The South Carolina school’s problem was not a streaker on the stage or a crazed person with a gun. Rather, it was an overzealous mom.

Shannon Cooper was handcuffed and taken to jail for cheering too loudly at her daughter Iesha’s (eye-e-shuh) high school commencement ceremony. That’s right, Ms. Cooper was taken away by the police and held for several hours. Because she was too proud and too loud. (Officially, she was charged with “disorderly conduct.”)

Apparently, the police did warn attendees that “excessive cheering” would not be tolerated. Ms. Cooper maintains that she was no louder than other parents or families.

Local television station WPDE spoke with mother and daughter after fiasco:

As bizarre as it may seem, this strange incident is not an isolated one. Over-cheering rules have been enforced in other states.

The NY Daily News reports that a high school student — Anthony Cornist — in Ohio was actually denied his diploma last week after his family was deemed to be a bit too exuberant during the commencement:

It wasn’t jail but community service that student Anthony Cornist was reportedly handed after his graduation from Mt. Healthy Junior/Senior High School in Ohio. His family and supporters gave him such a rowdy reception that school officials denied him his diploma and told him he will have to perform 20 hours of community service before he can graduate, according to ABC 9 in Cincinnati.

Cornist maintains that he was just walking across the stage when the crowd reacted with what has been called “excessive” by the school. In this case, the attendees may have had good reason to cheer for the graduating senior as he was also a star on the school’s football team.

The story was big news in Ohio:

Anthony Cornist and his family are vowing to fight the demand for 20 hours of community service, calling the school’s sentence “ludicrous.”

The school has yet to formally comment on the situation.

I love the story about 20 hours of community service..

Doesn’t the school know they have no ground to stand on?? The child EARNED a diploma, and was DENIED it…. Simple, take the school to court, and watch how fast the judge tells them to hand over the diploma…

You don’t have to fight the school, you just have to ignore them… Plus its not like anyone asks to see your diploma after you graduate anyway… Both my Diploma, and my degree have just sat in a filing cabinet collecting dust for over ten years…

No big lose for the people mentioned here (execpt the mom who got arrested…..) If your school denies you a diploma, who cares… Its not like REALLY cares about your highschool career anyway.. Most just care that you went and completed it… I have NEVER seen anyone ask for proof…

The liberal society will allow cheering and applause at the ceremony to pick up your first government check.

Since the greatness of our nation is based on our social programs, at least our president thinks so.

Maybe it’s a culture of low expectations. Nobody cheered like drunken idiots at any of my graduations, for any of the graduates. I suppose graduating from high school was just an expected step in life and not a grand achievement. College celebrations occurred after the ceremony. Graduating from a post-graduate program is a dignified event and usually the type of people that would do the wave at such an event are not there anyway. All that being said, all this bad publicity and threats by the general public will probably force the administrator to give the student his diploma.

Some mothers can be so asinine and become such an embarrassment to their children by acting like it’s ALL ABOUT THEM. No, Mom, it’s not about you, it’s about your child. So shut up, sit down and act like a real mom. If you don’t know how, look around and see how the other moms are acting.

At my commencement everyone was asked to withhold applause until the end of the ceremony. It was a class of 800 or so, and they were trying to keep the ceremony from going longer than the already four hours it was. I have mixed feelings, because I know high school graduation is a huge milestone for some kids, but I’ve attended graduations, and it can be terminally boring too.

People are “permitted” (even encouraged!) to root for various sports teams at all sporting events, but we’re not “permitted” to do it at a graduation ceremony?!? Other than disrupting, slowing the process (which I could see) – WHY? Seems just STUPID to me!

People used to (rightly so!) say they didn’t enjoy churches who enforced the same “rules” (sit quietly, hands folded, feet on the floor, etc.) – no sounds of joy or raising of hands in worship – MAN’S RULES. How is this any different?!?

I can understand some general decorum, but this is just plain stupid, in my opinion. Although while the lady said this day will always be tainted, I’d turn it into something to laugh about later in years–that is, if we’re permitted to do that then!

Let’s get the entire “educational system” OUT of the hands of the GOVERNMENT! Private schools and home schooling all the way, baby!

My daughter recently just graduated high school. While they “permitted” (isn’t that nice of them?) cheering, the students were warned not to be “too raucious” themselves. A few “strutted” a bit when they got their diplomas (and I guess were warned) – GOOD GRIEF. The few who did various things added to what is usually a rather dull event.. lol–added a little bit of laughter to the day–so what?!? I can see if it totally disrupted the ceremony, went on and on and on (like some speeches sometimes do), or was doing something considered “indecent” by the general public. But a few “moves” now and then or a thumbs up or whatever??? Oh and there were STRICT (and I mean stupid strict!) “rules” about what they could wear and what they couldn’t, including SPECIFIC shoes, etc. So we had to go out and buy the “specified shoe” or they’d be denied their diplomas. . .

( I think he was on his cell phone tweeting) My grandaughter has to work for every good grade she got, she has adhd severly. She was insulted that no one paid attention to the no clapping notice and the request at the beginning, she said she felt disrespected.. Screaming, whistling, even airhorns. Jenny, it’s not anyone disrespecting the students or trying to take the dignity away from what they accomplished. It’s simply people showing their JOY – celebrating an accomplishment THEIR child, grandchild, friend, etc. had made!

Is cheering at a football game disrespecting the team?

Of course not! It’s rejoicing with victories, big and small – it’s outwardly demonstrating joy and ENCOURAGING them to keep going–same with our students!

I cannot fathom for one second someone wanting to throw cold water on that! That’s NOT the America in which I want to live! You have a right to your opinion, of course, but like Rush said about Obama – in your phone calling – in this case, with all due respect–I hope you fail.

You are one of the only posters that “get it.” The commencement service was designed to be (and WAS up until recent years) a DIGNIFIED ceremony. @Peachy, you’re the one who fails to understand. It is NOT a sporting event and has absolutely no comparison point. Even dignified graduations, like the military academies, allow a segment at the end for cheering and throwing hats in the air, etc. Walking across stage and getting your diploma is not the opportunity for mom, dad, and uncle pervis to blow air horns and screech like banshees. It’s not all about YOU. Besides, you are supposed to graduate from HS….it’s not that big of a deal! This kid’s mom can make all the noise she wants when he gets his medical degree (sarcasm intended). Solemn and dignified is something that has disappeared from this country. I‘m just glad Peachy doesn’t define what America is.

I taught in a majority black school and they also had a similar rule. Some cheering took place, but once in a while you get some fool who is over the top. Most were respectful and civil, but some were disorderly morons. But it is generally true that the black students and their parents were far louder than whites, asians and hispanics. Just a cultural thing. Keep in mind, it was a BLACK principal in our school who tried to get everyone to behave, it wasn’t some “racist *******”, so don’t even go there. But then again, he wasn’t a noise-Nazi either, and didn’t arrest anyone. But who knows what problems they’ve had in the past.
Still, if the worst offense you have is a momma who is overly excited and supporting her baby for graduating, then things aren’t too bad. Ease up, folks, let the Mommas show their love.

At many, if not all, similar celebrations the audience is asked politely to hold their applause until all students/participants receive their award, certificate, etc. It seems, however, there are always those present that have no personal shame and hoot and holler when their off-spring or friend’s name is announced. By doing so, they distract from the dignity of the situation and draw attention to themselves at the expense of the next person in line to receive their recognition. I wish people like the indignant Ms Cooper would keep their big fat mouths shut and show some public display of respect to others. Glad the cops took her away. Bet many others at the event are too.

Bob Dee – I agree with your comments right up until you stated that you were glad the cops took her away (arrested according to the article). I just can not get on board with legislating good behavior and morality. I feel there are better ways of dealing with these problems. The organizers of the event certainly have every right to throw them out of the event if someone is not following their rules HOWEVER, I don’t see this as a reason to toss someone in jail. PERHAPS there is more to the story than is being reported. Maybe she got stupid with the cops for being kicked out and maybe that action led to her arrest. My guess is the cops were perhaps a little overzealous or the reporter is not reporting the whole truth here. Either way, I think we need to be careful about condoning arrests for things that may be annoying to most but not against the law or better yet the supreme law of the land – the US Constitution.

I have never been to any graduation in last 10+ years that was not held outside and cannot seen why this should have happened. If she was causing a scene or causing a disruption then I could see why but it looks like too many “control Freaks” are trying to run our world.

We’ll probably have the NBPP or Al showing up to hold a parade and play the Discrimination Card . Hopefully, there were other Black families at this school to make those charges impossible ( but those families would be called “oreos” or Uncle Toms by the Race Baiters ! )

“It wasn’t jail but community service that student Anthony Cornist was reportedly handed after his graduation from Mt. Healthy Junior/Senior High School in Ohio. His family and supporters gave him such a rowdy reception that school officials denied him his diploma and told him he will have to perform 20 hours of community service before he can graduate, according to ABC 9 in Cincinnati.”

I would sue their ***** off.

Me too. How could the school decide to punish him this way? It sounds like something a judge would give a criminal, not a school give an almost ex student.

We’re living in a Brave New World….and I sure as hell don’t like it.
Two more generations of this cr*p and we will have a nation of spineless lemmings existing solely to provide for and please the ruling class.
    It is a damned shame.

This is outrageous. O don’t care who you are to arrest someone for cheering for their child is ridiculous. I think you should slow down the ceremony with cheering, and make the kids feel good. How many kids don;t graduate at all. Thgis all about political correctness, because some kids will get more cheers than others, and they don’t want the other kids to feel bad, tough titties.

Well people, if this doesn’t tell the whole Marxist/Communist story of our education system nothing will.

While this is a little crazy, I don‘t believe for a second that she wasn’t any louder than any of the other parents. When I graduated HS I did so with 950 other kids. Because of time issues they don’t stop, they just keep reading the names on the list–so if you came after this eye ee sha your family probably didn’t even hear your name.

I agree .. and when my son graduated .. all the parents clapped for them all .. some of the parents stood when their kids was receiving the diploma but did not cheer or clap any louder for them. But then this was not a public school and I think more respect may be the norm.

      These are Americans.

We cannot have our citizens arrested for cheering. If schools don’t want parents cheering they need to change the ceremony, put it outside and just mail diplomas.

@CATB – wow, your people are better 9or maybe more boring) than these people – gratz. But that is not the point. Americans come in all shapes and sizes and we don’t arrest people for being enthusiastic. We don‘t ruin their special graduation day and we don’t torture a student when parents or others cheer too loudly.

If this was in a church or other place where cheering was viewed as offensive, I would put the people outside, but not arrest them.

It wasn’t the cheering that got her in trouble, it was all of the “You’re Ugly, you’re ugly, your momma say your ugly” chants at the other students that got her tossed.

I’m not really sure why anyone claps or cheers at a high school graduation, let alone attends it.
It’s not like it was some huge victory.
It’s not like it was a huge effort.
It‘s not even an education you can be proud of when you’re seeking employment.
It’s 12 grades of unionized underachieving do nothings preparing you to be dependent on the government for the rest of your lives.
