Teen Mom Calls 9-1-1 for Permission to Shoot Intruders Before Killing One Using 12-Gauge Shotgun

Oklahoma Teen Mom Shoots Intruder Dead | Calls 911 First for Permission | Sarah McKinley | Oklahoma City

Eighteen-year-old Sarah McKinley and her 3-month-old son were unharmed when two intruders tried to break into their home outside of Oklahoma City on New Year’s Eve. Her husband had died from lung cancer on Christmas Day, and when she realized intruders were attempting to break into her home she had nothing to do but grab her 12-gauge shotgun and pistol, and call 911.

She spoke with the operator for 21 minutes, making sure she had the right to shoot if the men forced their way in.

“I can’t tell you that you can do that, but you do what you have to do to protect your baby,” the dispatcher told her as she held the infant with a bottle, according to KOCO.

She ultimately pulled the trigger.

One of the men, 24-year-old Justin Martin, McKinley is believed to have been stalking her since her husband’s death. ABC news reports that McKinley barricaded herself in her bedroom with the baby and guns. When Martin kicked down the bedroom door, McKinley’s maternal instincts kicked in:

“When Martin kicked in the door and came after her with the knife, the teen mom shot and killed the 24-year-old. Police are calling the shooting justified.

‘You’re allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force; Det. Dan Huff of the Blanchard police said.”

Martin died and the second suspect, Dustin Stewart, currently sits in jail. Investigators are searching Martin’s car for evidence that the home invasion was premeditated, KFOR-TV reported.

“I wouldn’t have done it, but it was my son,” McKinley told KOCO. “It’s not an easy decision to make, but it was either going to be him or my son. And it wasn’t going to be my son. There’s nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child.”

Amen.

@moderationisbest, you say it is sad someone had to die. Which is the same thing you would say if that poor woman had been killed by an intruder and did not have the capability of defending herself. Or what if she had been raped? What would you say then? Sad would not bring her back from the dead or restore her sanity after being raped.

Seriously? When someone attacks another human being with a knife and the obvious intent to harm or kill you say you are sad that they are dead? I’m thankful that she was armed and capable of defending herself.

What saddens me is that our culture creates predators like the decedent and bleeding hearts that are sad when he is killed for attacking an innocent women in her own house. Would you prefer she tried to talk it over with the guy as he was coming at her with a knife? Wake-up man!

I live out in the stickes here in Oklahoma and it is about 25 minuets to drive in town. If my wife had to dial 911 she would get the volunteer fire dept. They would calll sherrifs dept and probably get there first. All the fire trucks have a 30-06 rifle in the cab and most of the guys have carry permits and are packing. While all this was going on my wife would have either got my Winchester 30-30 or got her Taurus 4510 Judge loaded with .410 gauge shells. All 3 of my daughter inlaws have carry permits and have a .357 that is loaded and ready to go.

We need more store owners, whom are robbed by gunpoint, to do the same thing. That is how you decrease theft and robberies. If the criminals think that they would be shot and killed for B&E’s, chances are theyll reconsider committing the crime in the first place. “When seconds count, the Police are minutes away.”

A Sad loss for this deceased individuals family, but it was that persons decision to commit to a B&E.

As an ex-911 calltaker/dispatcher in central Texas, I can tell you the calltaker/operator was correct.
I once had an elderly woman who lived alone call, saying someone was trying to come in by breaking down the front door. She was also armed with a 12 gauge shot gun. She lived in the country, and was concerned that the officers might not get there before the assailant busted down the door. They didn’t. She yelled “I’m gonna shoot him!” and BAM.. she did. The officers from my understanding were impressed with her ability to handle a weapon when panicked as well as she did.

      @RICKYGY53

A twenty one minute response time is actually pretty typical. The guidlines that they work under say that only incidents with people actually dead or dying are emergency situations that require immediate response. Situations like this are categorized as non-emergency situations.

It‘s sad but it’s the result of the fact that the vast majority of calls to 911 are not emergencies, and they incorrectly work under that assumption.

It’s not sad. It’s the result of a poor exercise in free will. The dead idiot made a poor decision that put two human beings (one fully defenseless, one not so much) in fear for their lives. Once this punk and his friend decided to invade another’s property, they (and others like them who intend to steal and do harm) have EXPRESSLY invited whatever response to stop the invasion the rightful landowner/target brings to bear. I’ve told my own children if they engage in such thievery, they deserve whatever bad thing comes their way. No sympathy here.
Self defense is a basic right witnessed thoughout the animal kingdom. “Ware the UN and other bleeding hearts such as liberal national govts. that assert there is no such right BUT thugs have rights to protect them from due recourse. Such dangerous thinking usually indicates an unspoken ownership of all citizens. Don’t want those thralls gettin too bold, now do you? They might decide to challenge other thugs and thieves… like those in govt.
21 minutes on the phone debating this? To hell with that. I’m not a violent man, but that’s a < 21 second phone call telling authorities where to come so that they can remove the garbage from my property. After the interloper is down.
Waste no tears on this trash. I'm sure they and their kind wouldn't have bothered if roles were reversed. Good riddance. Some folks choose to act like wild animals… so be it.

Have we all replaced our heart for this young mother with ego? Are all those here who cheer for the killing of a human sharing of the same action? And take joy in it?

This girl is 18 years old with a newborn baby and a recently deceased husband. That’s difficult enough (believe me I know) and now she has to live with the memory of taking a life to possibly save a life in a moment of sheer terror. She will relive that moment her whole life, you won’t. She will always wonder what if, you won’t? Stop cheerleading for death, its insulting. Satan has enough power already.

Have you considered at all the possibility that she was on the phone asking for permission because she knows its wrong to kill? Trying desperately not to bring further violence to the situation? What if the police did show up and she let her guard down and was taken captive? What then?

WE DON’T KNOW! So forgive me for saying the obvious: we don’t get to have a say in this. It is between her and God now. Same for the dead boy and the prisoner. They made choices and we don’t get to judge. My heart goes out to this girl, one so young should not have to know of such things.

What has happened has happened and couldn’t have happened any other way. The problem is us, passing judgement where we haven’t the right.

We are not wise enough to apply the correct justice in an eye for an eye. I believe that is why God sent His son. BTW, Jesus never killed anyone…

Only sad thing is that the young woman didn’t shoot them both. The perp is dead because he thought he had an easy victim. They were predators in search of prey – 2 men against one 18 year-old mother. If the police had arrived and shot him it would be police brutality. If he was only wounded or arrested he’d tie up the courts for months, wear a suit to court, get his mother to beg for leniency. And maybe his next choice for victim would be you.

It is unfortunate that someone died but I don‘t think it is sad because it was the consequence of the dead man’s CONSCIOUS CHOICE. It is sad when unfortunate things happen randomly or if that mother or child were hurt. I really don’t feel sorry for someone dying while making a conscious choice to hurt someone else.

It’s good to see a devoted and protective young, tough mother for a change. She’s a strong one after losing her husband. All she had was her child, and she fulfilled her main duty as a mother. Let this be a lesson to those thinking of doing the same criminal act. The most dangerous situation to be in is to go against a protective mother and her child. God Bless this young lady and her baby. .

She did the right thing. See why we must be able to protect ourselves? She could have been killed or raped in the 21 minutes had she not had a gun. Shotguns are great protection. I would not need permission from anyone, however, I would call 911 and have them stay on the line if I heard anyone trying to break in my home. I can use a gun, and would not hesitate shooting anyone breaking into my home. The person might break in, but would have to be carried out. In classes they advise you to tell the people in a loud voice that you have a gun and will shoot and the rest is up to them.

For those who are afraid of guns, take classes and learn to be responsible. Just look at how many people kill others with their cars, but they aren’t afraid of the car, so no need to be afraid of a gun.

21 minutes?!! Usually the potential victim is asleep and only has seconds to respond.

Glad he’s dead & wish the other were as well. More of this will deter crime like nothing else. Problem is, many of us are going to have to go to jail/prison for defending ourselves…at least here in Commufornia.

      Grabbed the kid.
Grabbed the guns and observed the four rules of firearms safety.
      Went to a safe room.
      Called 911
      Shot from behind cover.
Shot straight and true and destroyed intended armed target.
Sent perpetrator to suffer in eternal hell fire and demonic torment if God judges him guilty of unrepentant mortal sin.
Enforced the laws protecting her rights that the cops couldn’t.
Left the cops to clean up the messy pieces, which they are pretty much experts at these days.
Sent a message to would be criminal element in neighborhood: “You want some of this?”

I am sure that someone in this peice of garbages family will want to sue her for worngful death or some other such crap, it has happened before. When someone is trying to break into your home 21 minutes can seem like a lifetime. I am not sure of just how big the town of Blanchard OK is, but honestly 21 minutes does seem to me to be just to long of a time frame. When seconds count the police are minutes away. Yes it seems strange to many that the dispatcher told her that she could not give the girl permission to use deadly force, but had the dispatcher done so the Department could then have been sued by the next of kin of the perp.

Most liberals/progressives are under the impression that the the police, fire department, etc., have an affirmative obligation to protect them. That’s not true at all. If you are the victim of a crime, you have recourse against the offender if they are found, but not against the police or the state. If your house is on fire and the fire department doesn’t get there in time, tough luck. They are not liable. Fortunately this woman had the means and the intestinal fortitude to protect herself and her child. Makes you wonder just what we are paying so much in property and other taxes for when you have to wait for 21 minutes and then still have to take matters into your own hands.

Why are some people so shocked that 21 minutes went by w/o the police showing up. One of the lessons here is one cannot DEPEND on the government doing all that they, in theory, should. If you think the police should always be able to come to the rescue, you are deluded. And what about people who couldn’t make it to the phone? What if the intruder invading the home faster? I am sure 21 minutes to complete entry to a home is a VERY long time.

The lessons here are there are bad guys, the government can’t always protect you, and the most effective protector of yourself and your family from home invaders is a prepared yourself.

That’s a fairly normal response time for the police. If you are ever in trouble, always call the fire department first. They will respond much quicker and most people will run when that much attention is brought to the scene.

Or, you do as she did; arm yourself and protect your family. Don’t ever rely on the government to protect you.

Some people live in rural areas and the sheriff could be an hour or more away. Within the City, the police might be many minutes away as well. It’s not like in the movies where they show up the minute a crime is committed. We should be so lucky.
      \
Get a gun and take lessons for your own safety. I live in a “Make my Day law” state where we, who have a gun, don’t have to worry what to do about an intruder. Warn them and shoot if they keep coming. I’ve had the safety classes and know what I can do legally, but being an excellent shot is helpful. Like the girl in this story, use a shot gun if you’re aim is off.

Swanpy, it takes at least 30 minutes from the nearest sheriff or state police post to get to where I live in the U.P. of Michigan. Sooner if they are on patrol on the nearest highway which is 10.5 miles away. Everyone who lives out here would be naive to think the response time of police or firefighters could be less. People know this, so they have a firearm handy at all times.

@Justangry: That’s cool. Just please be super safe and don‘t let her handle anything that’s too much for a young girl. Make sure it’s a firearm that you know upside down and backwards and that you personally know to be suitable.

Sometime back I saw a story of a father who let his son (who was older than 8) shoot a micro uzi and the muzzle climb caused the boy to shoot himself in the head. I hate to say it, but that dad is as responsible for his son‘s death as if he’d given him the keys to a 900 HP ferrari after letting him sit in his lap and steer while driving his Chevette around the neighborhood.

JustAngry, our 5 year old has had a single shot .22 Cricket rifle since she was 3 years old. My husband & I shoot together frequently, & she shoots with us. She also attends many 3-gun shooting competitions with her daddy, & is not squeamish about hunting or shooting animals for food. She is quite able to load, aim, shoot, kick out the brass, & reload all by herself. We obviously do not just “turn her loose” with a gun, we are ALWAYS right there, knelt down next to her to insure safety. She is VERY respectful of guns at 5 years old & understands that were she to encounter a weapon at someone else’s house that she does not touch it – but because we’ve taught her about gun safety starting at a very early age rather than making it taboo as so many people do, I believe she has a leg-up in the safety department. She understands safe handling practices, not “sweeping” people with a weapon (loaded or NOT), & knows how to determine if a safety is on or not. Don’t shy away from teaching them early – just instill safety safety safety. That is the surest way to keep them & others around them, well, safe. I wouldn’t have it any other way for our family & the age she started learning at.

Anyway – kudos to you for being another parent that will start their child early & SAFELY.

I think parents, who are 2nd ammendment friendly, should teach their kids [boys and girls] gun handling and safety early on. Get them excited about them, yet fill them with the knowledge to be secure in their safety and use. The less female victims, the better.

Where it is too bad someone had to die, . . . that guy COULD have been at home watching a good TV show instead of breaking into someone’s house with a knife with the intent to cause [illegal] trouble.

I agree. I need to move to Texas. My grandpa taught me to shoot a single shot 22 rifle when I was about 8 yrs old and I’ve had a love affair with guns ever since. When I married, my husbands family hunted deer and I was given a wonderful rifle. In short time I could shoot more accurately than the entire family. So, I was given a 22 pistol and never missed a can. Hunting, I wore my pistol in a holster and carried my rifle on my shoulder. I took only one shot to take down a deer and they dropped instantly, so I never felt like there was pain involved. Plus, we always used the meat.

As years went by, and I was alone, I decided I needed to be more proactive. So I took classes and learned the safety (which I already knew) and the laws for our area. Now, I want to move to Texas where my grandpa lived years ago.

Basically, I think that that most of us are fed up and sick and tired of this liberal progressive crap that takes care of criminals more than the decent law abiding citizens. It is because most liberal progressives are criminal types so they are just protecting their own.

Gun CONTROL is not a ban on guns. Gun control is about not selling guns to people with a criminal background and keeping armor piercing rounds out of the hands of criminals who would use them to kill cops wearing kevlar.

But hey, let’s use a story about a woman using a shotgun, which is not a concern for most gun control activists, to make it easier for criminals to buy heavy weaponry that can be used against cops! That sounds like a great idea!
