SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A mother loading her 2-year-old son into an SUV used her body to protect the toddler before she was shot and killed in an ensuing midday gunbattle at a Sacramento strip mall, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.
Monique Nelson, 30, had just strapped her son into his car seat when she was struck in the chest, and detectives believe she positioned herself to protect her son, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Curran said.
“She was found with her body over the young child,” he said. “So we believe she did hear the gunfire.”
A second victim, 20-year-old Marvion Barksdale, also died from injuries suffered in the shootout after being taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a chest wound, Curran said. Five other men were injured in the gunfight. All are expected to survive.
Nelson died at the scene, where Metro Fire and sheriff department personnel were seen attempting to entertain her son following the shooting. The child was unharmed and has been reunited with family members, according to authorities.
Family members did not immediately return a phone message left Wednesday at their bookstore, where Nelson worked as a supervisor, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Nelson’s brother, Richard Nelson, told the newspaper his sister was “bubbly, outgoing, always had a smile on her face.”
He said her biggest passion was her son.
“All about her son. She loved her son dearly,” he said. “She was a good mother.”
Detectives believe at least one gunman entered the Fly Cuts & Styles barber shop just before 1 p.m. and began shooting. At least one person inside the shop returned fire.
Curran said the ensuing gunbattle transitioned into the parking lot. Detectives have recovered bullets from four firearms, including one rifle, he told reporters Wednesday. One handgun was recovered but police aren’t sure if it was used in the shooting.
A number of homicides have occurred in south Sacramento, the site of Tuesday’s shooting, but there is no known history of violence at the barber shop, Curran said. Authorities were still investigating the crime Wednesday, and said they had no motive for it.
Curran said Nelson had visited a one-hour photo shop in the shopping center before briefly stopping into the barber shop to say hello to people she knew there. Curran described the barbershop as a “social gathering place” for many people and said Nelson would bring her son there to get his hair cut.
“We believe there are many people out there who were involved in the shooting and they will be held accountable. We need people withholding information to know that they can come forward,” Curran said. “Bottom line: we have a completely innocent victim who was shot.”
One man who was arrested early Wednesday as part of the investigation into the shooting was found not directly involved in the shooting. Curran said the man had other outstanding issues.
A 28-year old man who was wounded in the shoulder and leg, and a 46-year-old man who was shot in the stomach remained hospitalized Wednesday, Curran said.
A 37-year-old man who was wounded in the leg and a 20-year-old man who was shot in the chest were treated and released. They were only associated with the shootout later Tuesday, Curran said, after leaving the strip mall and being dropped off at separate hospitals.
A 39-year-old man also suffered a grazing wound to the ankle and was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Authorities said they have not identified which of the injured victims might be suspects.
Although it’s likely gang members were involved, authorities do not believe the shooting was directly related to gang activity, Curran said.
“There were undoubtedly people involved that were gang members. But as far as this being a classic gang shooting … that’s not what this was at all,” he said.
Curran said two dozen people were playing games in a back room of the shop when the shooting occurred. He said detectives have spoken to about 20 people and they are not cooperating as much as they should for fear of retaliation.
“(Detectives) are getting variations of the same story,” he said.
Tuesday’s shooting happened about a block from where a 22-year-old man was shot execution-style in January as he ate lunch at a restaurant. Police believe that case was gang-related but it remains unsolved.

24 dewds in the back of the shop playing games? What we have here is an illegal gambling operation. The people had 6 poker games going on or 8-liners lined up or even dominoes. This may have been a robbery gone bad or not enough protection money being paid. There is a lot more going on here then we are being told. I doubt the real information will ever be revealed. This goes on a lot more then people realize. It’s a shame innocent people get caught up in these crime on crime situations. Damn shame….

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 8:15amI’m sure that this will also be brought into gun control. I wonder why all the leaders always want more gun control, but never ask for a law against gang membership. After all, by what they believe about gun control, then a law against gang membership would stop most of the crime.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 8:11amThe people in the community know who the gangsters are. Time to take some action, since the cops wont. Some sniper rifles with scopes could end the gang problem in a few days. C’mon people. Stand up for yourselves. The stupid cops wont help you, they are to busy stroking their own ego’s with their badges.
You gotta stand up for yourselves and take back your community!!!

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 3:02am…no mention of a father in this story.
The whole thing sounds like the product of a broken, dysfunctional community.
There are now too many places in our formerly placid nation like this…and if you track the governing powers in those communities you find they are almost uniformly Liberal/Progressive governing powers. Crime and criminality can be found almost everywhere in the US of A, but crime and fractional family units are far more common where Libs rule.
Tragedy and pain follow Liberal rule wherever it is found.

Report Post »I agree. Whatever the circumstances that led this woman to be in this particular place at this particular time is irrelevant. The fact that she protected her son from the violence around them with her very life is far more worthy of prayer than criticism.
I pray her son grows up far removed from the lifestyle that killed his mother.

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 1:54amHmm – lets compare notes.
Sacremento police would love to get local residents who saw a gangland shootout to say something about the dead and wounded citizens.
If you say something about GANG shootings – members of one of the (alleged) gangs involved (or perhaps members of BOTH alleged gangs) will come to your home and murder everyone they find.
Police need information from 20 citizens from the backroom of the barbershop where the shootout began (this time), who saw the entire shootout. The police assume that ALL 20 people know: A) the names of the customer/gang members involved, but must also live on the streets after the police go home to mull over MORE evidence about gang shootings going back ALL THE WAY TO LAST JANUARY, when a 22 year old man was shot in the back-o-the-head-execution style (that they haven’t yet found a culprit to)….
***MEMO TO THE COPS*** You will never get your answers as the good people of Sacremento have been turned into sheeple. The criminals know that their gunbattle was over before you showed up – probably because they know how long it takes you to show up.
Here’s a couple of questions I have from information NOT in the story:
!) What is the nationality of the suspected gangs involved in crimes that OBVIOUSLY had ZERO chance of being GANG RELATED ACTIVITY?
2) How much information should cops expect to get about activities of KNOWN gang members – many of which are extension of the Narco-Anarchists running our neighbor to the south – when they lie?
3) How can cops HOPE to get information from victims of the activities (i.e. SHOOTINGS) of KNOWN GANG MEMBERS – do NOT serve as evidence of “gang related activities”?
4) Do you think that citizens feel empowered when they ONLY have to wait 40 minutes for the police to come and defend them from GANG ACTIVITIES (i.e.-SHOOTINGS) – even though most crimes are over in 20 minutes – or do you think they feel like sheeple?
5) Do you think strong, independent and free people will remain sheeple?
The RIGHT of self-defense is the first law of nature.
