Mondale to Obama: Get Rid of the ‘Idiot Boards’

In an interview this morning with Amy Robach from “Today,” former Vice President Walter Mondale had some advice for President Obama: ditch the teleprompters. Or, as Mondale calls them, the “idiot boards”:
The New Yorker article referenced by Robach includes a similar scolding from Mondale:
“I think he needs to get rid of those teleprompters, and connect. He’s smart as hell. He can do it. Look right into those cameras and tell people he’s hurting right along with them.”
A lot has been made of Obama’s teleprompters. Last month, Scott let us know that MSNBC’s Chris Matthews implored Obama to get rid of the “damn” things after stories surfaced that Obama uses them in low-level business meetings.

He has the spontaneity of a wall clock. This was his perceived virtue–his reliability–but it is now showing up quite clearly as a detriment.

Almost all of Obama‘s notable quotables came from moments where he didn’t have his prompters. Or as I like to think of them the strings of his speech writers and puppeteers. Without them he’s allot impotent in public venues. And really I don‘t care if he’s potent in private or not I pray no one ever publishes that tidbit of information.
