(The Blaze/AP) — The head of Egypt’s military took a tough line Sunday on the Muslim Brotherhood, warning that he won’t let the fundamentalist group dominate the country, only hours after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged him to work with Egypt’s elected Islamist leaders.

Clinton‘s visit to Egypt underscored the difficulty Washington faces in trying to wield its influence amid the country’s stormy post-Hosni Mubarak power struggles. Protesters chanting against the U.S. – sometimes reaching several hundred – sprung up at several sites Clinton visited this weekend.

On Sunday, protesters threw tomatoes, water bottles and shoes at her motorcade as she left a ceremony marking the opening of a new U.S. consulate in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

“Monica, Monica” some chanted, according to Reuters, while others yelled, “Leave, Clinton!”

A tomato struck an Egyptian official in the face, and shoes and a water bottle landed near the armored cars carrying Clinton’s delegation in the port city of Alexandria after she gave a speech on democratic rights.

A senior U.S. official said neither Clinton nor her vehicle, which was around the corner from the incident, were hit by the projectiles, which were thrown as U.S. officials and reporters walked to the motorcade after her speech.

The United States is in a difficult spot when it comes to dealing with post-Mubarak Egypt – eager to be seen as a champion of democracy and human rights after three decades of close ties with the ousted leader despite his abysmal record in advancing either.

This has involved some uncomfortable changes, including occasional criticism of America‘s longtime partners in Egypt’s military and words of support for the country’s Islamist parties.

Walking a fine line, Clinton called for religious tolerance and respect of minorities in the new Egypt – a major concern among the Christian minority, women and secular liberals who fear restrictions if the fundamentalist Brotherhood wields power.

“Democracy is not just about reflecting the will of the majority,” she said. “It is also about protecting the rights of the minority.”

“Real democracy means that no group or faction or leader can impose their will, their ideology, their religion, their desires on anyone else.”

But after talks with Clinton on Sunday, Mubarak’s former defense minister Tantawi made it clear the military will not allow the Brotherhood to hold sway, though he didn’t specify the group by name.

“Egypt will never fall. It belongs to all Egyptians and not to a certain group – the armed forces will not allow it,” he warned in comments to reporters after a handover ceremony for the transfer of command of the armed forces’ 2nd Field Army in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia.

“The armed forces will not allow anyone, especially those pushed from outside, to distract it from its role as the protector of Egypt,” he said. “The army will never commit treason and will continue to perform its duties until Egypt reaches the shores of safety.”

The military and the Brotherhood have bad blood since the 1950s, when then-president Gamal Abdel-Nasser jailed the group’s leaders and hundreds of its members. He ordered another crackdown in the early 1960s, jailing some again and executing a few. Mubarak spent most of his years in office chasing after the Brotherhood, jailing thousands.

One commenter mocked the administration’s support for “Arab Spring” in Egypt, writing: “The Arab Spring is raining on Hillary.”

Another said, “Ah, Obama‘s great ’Arab Spring’ begins to pay off…Kinda like his ‘Summer of Recovery.’”

EdMass at the Daily Kos sarcastically concludes: “Guess the Arab Spring [is] about done now?”

    I think Hillary should just stay there in Egypt , sieze power away from the muslim brother-hoods, name herself as dictater , and create her own middle eastern utopian society where everything is rainbows and candy . I am sure in no time she will be so popular they will put up a statue in her honor just like the one Saddam Hussein had.

      This is a topic a little too complex for this website. On the one hand, there is the democraticaly elected leader of of Egypt, who is a Muslim and a person sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood, although he’s promised to be a leader for all Egyptians and to protect the minorities, including Christians. And there’s the military, who is still, in reality, in control and says they will not allow the Muslim Brotherhood to hold control of the government.

      So naturally what does this website do? Slam Hillary Clinton and report on a couple of people yelling “Monica.” I know you guys would like to bomb Egypt and Iran, but there are more rational people trying to promote American interests without starting any more wars. At least until we finished the trillion dollar wars Bush started.

      First; Egypt was running out of “botagas”, just as Soros predicted and everyone there was getting mad.

      Second; Soros told his buddy Obama so Obama got Robert Gibbs the leave the White House and go to Facebook and got the CEO of Google to leave Google and come to the White House.

      Third; Google got Wael Ghonim in Egypt to teach Egyptians about Facebook and Social Networking.

      Forth; When Egyptians learned to communicate through Social Networking and with backing of the White House, Soros, Google and Facebook…. the Arab Spring begun.

      Fifth; With all this help Mubarak was ousted. The Muslim Brotherhood promised (like a teenage boy who promised not to go too far) that they only wanted some seats in Parliament and would never run one of their group for President.

      Sixth; They got many seats in Parliament and then ran and seated a Muslim Brotherhood leader as President. The White House approves and Muslim terrorist are now visiting the White House on special State Dept visas that have not been vetted.

      On another note………don’t you find it just a bit sad, and even embarrassing, that even on the other side of the world, in EGYPT of all places, the villagers know enough to taunt our “Secretary of State” with the words……..”MONICA……..MONICA” (Even after all these years)

      All because her husband, our President, was getting bj’s under the desk in the Oval Office from a teenage intern. (Not to mention the cigar escapades)

      Democrats demean our country, and our institutions in so many ways it is sickening.

      Good thing we have progressives around here that are able to explain the complex. Yeah, I constantly see the conservatives around here demanding more war. Funny, I’m pretty sure we are also the ones who know that are troops are war weary and in need of R & R. It’s not the Republicans in the House who are buddy buddy with the Muslim Brotherhood. The destruction of Israel may seem like good fun to the progressive Democrats who pander to the Brotherhood, but it’s not going to happen without a fight from the rest of us.

      I guess it went right over your head (because your head is buried up your arse) but this was a Blaze/AP story, not some made up story that Media Matters is so fond to print.

      Actually, Congress, or rather the House, controls the purse strings under the Constitution as far as I know. What happens is that an amendment gets added to a Bill that everyone wants and the funds flow to people like this. Currently, the Executive branch is bypassing Congress.

      We need to have a Congress with guts….. then the Executive branch can be put back in place. That goes for RINO’s and Progressives. I think that is what Freedom works is concentrating on.

    Egypt WAS an ally. Because of traitors like Hillary, we no longer have an ally, and now possibly have an enemy who has a HUGE MILITARY paid for with our tax dollars, which we borrowed from China. Hillary is a traitor. She couldn’t have been so incredibly stupid as to not know what would happen when Egypt was destabilized. Revolution in islamic countries always leads to anarchy and violent destabilization. Ultimately, Hillary’s treachery and traitor-ship will lead to war.

      The only way they’ll learn will be if a few of them get kidnapped and beheaded. Of course that lesson will probably only be good for a month or two until they’re back on the “Islam is the religion of peace” bull crap. The only thing Islam understands is the bomb, the gun and a big stick. BO and Hilary Cluntin have zero credibility…. NOBODY is afraid of them/us right now. This is called respect.     I wonder how many in the Egyptian military are members of the Muslim Brotherhood. They would certainly support Morsi.

    We face a similar problem with our own military and the Muslims who are currently members of the various branches. Will they support America or Islam when push inevitably becomes shove.

      Most of the Egyptian military are very westernized. A great portion of them have worked alongside and received training from the U.S. and despise the Muslim Brotherhood. The Egyptian military is the one thing right now that is holding onto whatever sanity is left in that country. As bad as it is in Egypt now, things will get only get twice as bad once they hand full control over to the Muslim Brotherhood. We need their military to hang onto power as long as they can right now.

    The shoe goes on. Hillary excapes from attack of the tomatoes, and arrive in Israel with some stains on her blue dress. Monica, Monica, Monica was music to her ears. The ASEAN meeting was a bust, she gets shoes and tomatoes thrown at her motorcade in Alexandria, Egypt. Well things will be very cool for her in Israel, very cool.

    So Hillary has stated; the clear distinction is that, throwing in full support with the Brotherhoods own faction she is working the Obama agenda for the region of allowing the radicals to rise to full power and dominance in the region. Failing this, I can see the course Obama will take, in unleashing the US forces on the army of Egypt if they rise to defend their nation from the Muslim Brotherhood.

    Soros and Obama would love nothing more than an civil war within Egypt, failing the Brotherhood coming to power and executing a war on Israel. In this second best matter, the chaos would bring about the closing of the Suez Canal; thus efficiently in one fell swoop cutting a vital trade route for much of the worlds oil, gas, and commerce shipping.

    Mind you, the same effect can too easily be achieved by the scuttling of one or more ships in the narrowest portions of the canal.
