‘Monitored and Remotely Controlled’: CIA Director’s Ominous Talk About Technology Tracking You

CIA Director David Petraeus, speaking at a summit organized by tech company In-Q-Tell, reportedly opened up about some shocking uses for all the “killer apps” and remote devices people are using in the modern economy. According to Petraeus, even doing something so simple as using Google Maps on one’s iPhone can now be used by the CIA to track movements. Newsmax caught the story and reports it as follows:
“‘Transformational’ is an overused word, but I do believe it properly applies to these technologies,” Petraeus reportedly said at the summit, “particularly to their effect on clandestine tradecraft.”
“Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters — all connected to the next-generation Internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing,” the CIA director continued.Petraeus acknowledged these new household spy devices would likely change “our notions of identity and secrecy,” which is something that worries privacy protection groups and lawmakers already concerned about how easy it is to obtain information from personal devices.
But wait, there’s more!
“Men in Black III” may not be out for a while, but some of the technology used in the series might not be science fiction for long. Petraeus also reportedly expressed interest in being able to create new identities for undercover agents while simultaneously “wiping” all record of their real lives from the internet. This kind of ability to literally rewrite cyber-history (as well as possibly even real history) would not only be a dramatic increase in power for this already influential arm of the Federal Government, but could open the door for all sorts of other web manipulation.

Policing our own people and protecting the government agencies from legal ramifications. Stuff like SOPA gets shut down, but things like the expansion of the NDAA or his most recent executive order get glanced over and forgotten. It’s by far the most worrisome part of his presidency, because the trend shows no sign of stopping no matter who wins the next election; I don’t doubt for a second that a president Romney or Santorum would continue doing the exact same thing.

Posted on March 19, 2012 at 4:25pmThe technology to listen in on conversations in a room where there’s a radio, TV, phone (or computer, etc.) has been around since the 1970s, when spies could park 5 miles away and use sensitive equipment to amplify electromagnetic (radio) signals that are emitted by all radios, etc., in a room. This works like a microphone and amplifier, essentially, unless your phone lines are grounded, bonded and shielded (like you’d do to protect from EMP). The way, at least way back when, to protect security is by individuals being aware of conversations and not allowing talk near such devices. The more useful way is the knowledge of information of a need-to-know basis. That’s why they had information classified in more than three categories, such as confidential, secret, and top secret with special intelligence (I think it was). I never had the “need to know”anything even confidential, so I didn’t. Remember the old saying,”Loose lips sink ships?” That’s how you protect information. As a journalist it was especially hard for me to learn not to report information to everyone listening or who might want to know. I called it news. So there’s a conflict between freedom of information and speech and the “need-to-know.” But this is how you can keep your secrets secure too. (But then I married a psychic. But that’s another story!)
