More ‘Mic Check’ Drama as Gingrich Chased, Heckled by Protesters at Iowa Capitol

Newt Gingrich was the object of yet another Occupy Wall Street protester-induced “mic check” during his visit to the Iowa Capitol building on Wednesday.

The videos depict protesters chanting everything from “put people first” to “speaker Gingrich, you can run but you can’t hide.”

According to the Des Moines Register, David Goodner of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement screamed “mic check” and others in his camp shouted as he abruptly started towards Gingrich.  Security ushered him out of the building.

Gingrich responded, “I was at the University of Iowa the other day and that same 1/10th of one percent – all noise, no thought – tried to drown out the conversation so I appreciate you all putting it in that perspective.”

The Register adds:

Soon after the press conference this morning at the Capitol finished, several of the nine protesters from CCI or Occupy Des Moines attempted to ask Gingrich questions about taxes and other issues but were either held back from some of Gingrich’s staff or given only a slight answer from Gingrich as he left the room.

The group – along with several dozen media employees – followed Gingrich and his wife Callista down the stairs of the Capitol and to a vehicle that was waiting to escort them.

Occupiers reportedly screamed at Gingrich as he walked away:

“You gave me 10 seconds, sir.  What if I had a million dollars. Would I get 10 minutes? How about an hour?”

“Speaker Gingrich, you can run but you can’t hide. We’re going to come for you everywhere you go.  You can’t show your face in public without seeing us.”

“You say you don’t like super PACs. How much money are super PACs spending on your campaign right now?”

But this is not the first run in the Republican presidential hopeful as suffered while on the campaign trail in Iowa. On Tuesday, The Blaze reported that a man approached Gingrich and, using some harsh expletives, insulted the Contract with America author:

In a moment captured on camera, the man, dressed in camouflage, approached the former House Speaker in a grocery store and told him to his face, “You know something? You’re a f–king asshole.”

Though audio of the exchange is slightly muffled, Gingrich seems to answer, “No I am not!”

“Yes,” the man said.

“It’s a free country,” Gingrich is heard saying as the clip ends.

Below is an additional report on Gingrich’s most recent heckling:

Newt is part of the problem and if you support him so are you. Look at his past policy decisions. The only sane vote is one for Paul. Like it or lump it every other candidate is a puppet for the republican party. I know the republicans used to be conservatives but that was long before any of you were born. Republicans haven’t stood for conservatism as long as I can remember. They have trampled on the constitution and destoryed our economy and yet you keep supporting them election after election. Worse yet you blame the democrats for failed republican policies rather than clean your own house. Newt is the other side of the same coin and if you vote for him you may as well just vote for Obama. What am I saying, of course you will. You are all a bunch of rino’s anyway.

Hey Die Trying – I read your “comments” but they only show you have been “educated” by liberals teachers who don’t know a thing about this country or the Constitution.

You tout Paul, yet, you allowed him to put out one of worse newsletters I have ever seen when it comes to racist and other comments. His “foreign policy” ideas would, after the 4 years of Obama, put us into a war before the first year in the office. Of course, his approach would be to let them walk into the country without trying to stop them. After all, they might wish to own our land, enslave the people, but it would be perfectly all right with him and his supporters – as long as they don’t disagree with him.

Die Trying, your non de plum says it all. You would die trying and if you did elect this “man” you would be dead within a year. Paul has no idea of what the world outside this country is like.

I have served this country and have seen over 45 countries – many of them where the females are “married” at 9 or 10 and if they even look at a man who is not her husband, or before marriage, they are murdered. Other countries where women is treated as dirt. In one, I pulled the young man out from under an overturned Fiat sportscar seconds before its fuel tank blew up. His father invited me to spend the weekend and I was offered a daughter about 11 or 12 as a companion for that weekend. I declined saying I was married (I wasn’t), but she was given no choice in the matter.

What gives OWS or any other group or individual the right to interrupt someone providing information to the masses? If I was any of these candidates I wouldn’t put OWS or anyone who interrupted me in the front of the line to have their questions answered. If you want to speak with someone, anyone, you need to be polite, and if there is a line to speak with someone or a process to organize the number of questions, you need to respect that as well. Just because a handful of people get together and scatter themselves in a room, doesn’t mean they can overwhelm the rights of the hundreds of others in that room who may just want to listen or have a question and are patiently waiting in line. These tactics will only serve to harden everyday Americans away from any legitimate cause OWS has.

I’ll assume by you posting that you have never been to a Town Hall Meeting so please let me educate you. The THM’s are a forum for INTERACTION between elected officials and voters, the key word being “interactive”. That means the politicians receive questions and answers them, whereas a speech is generally NOT interactive unless, or until, the speaker asks for questions. The only time I recall the Tea Party interrupting politicians (Republicans as well as Democrats, by the way) was when the response to a civil question was summarily ignored, belittled, or responded to with sarcasm or ridicule. There were a few times when Tea Party members were LOCKED OUT of Town Hall Meetings as they were “by invitation only” to Democrat voters.
My question is where the hell is the security for Gingrich? That first guy, had he wanted to, would easily have tackled Gingrich and seriously hurt him? How the hell did he get that close behind him?

It’s got nothing to do with how they dress. You’re just being judgemental and frankly a little rude. Is the presentation of their ideas horrible? Absolutely. Are they actually wrong in what they say? Well, now that’s where the debate is. Ol’ Nasty Newt is not good for America. And don’t play off my comment as some rave of a RP fanatic. I’m not voting for him either.

I just thought of something…Years ago it became dam near a crime to smack your kid on the mouth for screaming in the candy isle at the supermarket.
These OWSers are those kids all grown up. (sort of)
