Mystery: More Than 1,000 Dead Birds Fall From Sky Over Arkansas

BEEBE, Ark. (AP) — Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 black birds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday that it began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. the previous night. The birds fell over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area.
Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe said the he birds showed physical trauma, and she speculated that “the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail.”
The commission said that New Year’s Eve revelers shooting off fireworks in the area could have startled the birds from their roost and caused them to die from stress.
Robby King, a wildlife officer for the agency, collected about 65 dead birds, which will be sent for testing to the state Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis.
Rowe said that similar events have occurred elsewhere and that test results “usually were inconclusive.” She said she doubted the birds were poisoned.

At 11:30 pm, they should have been in their nests. I suspect a pathogen or food poisoning that affected their nervous system because only this species was involved and they exhibited atypical behavior (ie, flying at night) prior to death.

Posted on January 2, 2011 at 8:29pmBirds do not see well at night. They find trees to rest in and sit there quiet as a mouse until morning hoping no predator comes along. They will also do this after bathing since they have to work extra hard to fly when wet. These birds did not start falling from the sky until fireworks started and HOURS after dark. I think the fireworks spooked them and they accidentally flew into tree limbs, trees, and anything else in their path as they tried to fly away. It does not take much at all to break a bird’s neck that is flying at high rates of speed. That’s what I think anyway….just from watching how my bird acts…

I suspect these birds were subjected to the same shock you see when folks “fish” with explosives. BUT, the nuts on the far right will be looking for God and/or Black Hawks piloted by alien Bigfoots while the nuts on the left will be demanding fire works (and possibly New Year’s Eve) be banned to protect the red wing blackbird. With a couple hundred million of these birds in North America, this story isn’t all that mysterious. Interesting, yes. Tragic and spooky, no.

Isn’t interesting how they showed up to collect the dead birds some still partially alive. The collectors were seen wearing gas masks and sealed suits, this smacks of either overkill or their fear for exposure, and if so, why weren’t the citizens living in the area informed and told to protect themselves or get out of Dodge. Likely they collected the dead birds themselves before someone in the vicinity decided to do a little testing on their own, uncovering in analysis what the government was up to. In other words the government was protecting its own ass and not the concerns of the public.

Posted on January 2, 2011 at 8:42pmIf it happened during the severe tornado outbreak in Arkansas, that is more than likely the answer. These blackbirds fly in large groups and roost the same way. If a tornado roared across an area where they were roosting. they could have been sucked up into the vortex and being light, they could have been carried 50 to 60 thousand feet into the air. That alone would have caused hypoxia. There would also be the bombardment from hailstones entrained in the thunderhead. As the severe thunderstorms dissapate, they also produce extremely strong downdrafts as the cold air aloft rushes down. If in fact the birds had been carried aloft, the downburst couls have deposited them in a relatively small area.
It would be interesting to know if this was near any of the tornados.

My wife and I watched three jets very high above the atmosphere the other day and they all had these huge trails behind them and were moving back and forth. At the time we did not think much about it. When we laid down at night we began questioning as to why America always has huge outbreaks of illnesses. Just what are they spraying out of those things? On another occasion 6 years ago, I observed a jet with cloud-like trails behind it and two hours later a Turkey Buzzard dropped out of the sky and landed on the hood of a Chevy Truck? Later on I observed a bird that died while sitting on the electrical wires and was stuck there!

Report Post »First,how many birds were reported friday night from midnight until daylight? My guess, not many (esp. in a mile area). So… when the reports started coming in (my guess during the morning sat), how long did it take for someone to think it was a big story and order up a drone, piper cub or helicopter to survey the area? Did the AP pay for the aerial survey? hhmm….
