More Than 400,000 Israelis Turn Out for Largest Economic Protest Yet

Thousands of Israelis poured into the streets of the country's three largest cities Saturday night, Sept. 3, 2011, for what protest leaders predicted would be the largest of months of demonstrations against the rising cost of living. (AP Photo/Ariel Schalit)

TEL AVIV, Israel (The Blaze/AP) — More than 400,000 Israelis poured into streets in cities across the country Saturday night, Israeli media estimated, in a show of strength behind a social protest movement that has rocked the country for two months.

The demonstrations in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and elsewhere against Israel’s high cost of living, its housing crisis and distorted distribution of wealth marked the high point – so far – of a summer-long grass-roots protest movement that has ballooned from a few tents in Tel Aviv to a nationwide phenomenon that has delivered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government its most serious domestic crisis.

Israeli media said the turnout in Tel Aviv was more than 300,000, and more than 100,000 demonstrated in other cities. Israel’s police did not give an estimate. Taken together, the numbers put the Saturday demonstrations among the largest in Israel’s history, and the other large ones were over political issues like Mideast peacemaking, not social ills.

The protest movement and its slogan of “the people demand social justice” have thrust Israel‘s economic issues to the top of the country’s agenda and brought thousands into the streets each week.

In Tel Aviv, protest leader Itzik Shmuli called the gathering a historic moment.

“The new Israelis have a dream and it is very simple: we want to build our home in Israel,” Shmuli shouted. “We will not stop this protest until you, Mr. Prime Minister, give us real solutions.”

Saturday marked the eighth week in a row protesters have taken to the streets.

“I’ve had enough of always working and never advancing. You have to work several jobs just to survive. All the burden is on the middle class,” said Sharon Riwkes, a 30-year-old clinical psychology resident in Tel Aviv.

More Than 400,000 Israelis Turn Out for Largest Economic Protest YetIn response to the summer-long protests, Netanyahu has appointed a committee to address the demands. The demonstrators – a loose coalition of university students, social activists and disenchanted youngsters – have rejected all the reforms offered by the government and have pledged to continue protesting.

The protests have included representatives of all segments of society, with the exception of ultra-Orthodox Jews. Many Israelis are concerned about the growing influence of an expanding community where most of its men study scripture and live on government handouts.

A brief flare-up between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza deflected attention from the protests, but the large turnout Saturday indicated the focus has returned.

More Than 400,000 Israelis Turn Out for Largest Economic Protest YetIsrael emerged from the global financial crisis relatively unscathed. The economy is enjoying rapid growth, and unemployment is at its lowest in decades at around 5 1/2 percent.

Even so, statistics show the ranks of the working poor have grown dramatically as wealth has increasingly become concentrated among a small group of tycoons.

The middle class has specifically been hit hard, with high taxes and salaries that have not kept pace with rising consumer prices.

In recent months, the country has experienced protests against the high price of gasoline and cottage cheese – a staple of the Israeli diet – and seen lengthy strikes by social workers and doctors over low pay and working conditions.

“There is a chance here to change the face of Israel,” parliamentary opposition leader Tzipi Livni told Israel’s Channel 2 TV.

Not only in Israel but everywhere in the civilized world, the Baby Boomers raised brats that have no idea about the sacrifices that were made so they are not under Nazi rule. It is a lost generation that are willing to sell their souls to those that would destroy them.

It would appear that the Israeli government also has some unreasonable laws and regulations regarding business, starting a business and running a business. The tax system is also punitive and needs even further reforms before they will experience any kind of economic prosperity.

You sound just like my father did in the 60′s, when we “boomers” were the “brats” who thought we had all the answers. It’s a right of passage for all youngsters to be suspect of not being able to become the leaders of the world. 99% of those beautiful youthful faces in Israel and the USA are becoming good citizens, just as the 60′s youth became old and gray and still have something to say before they give up the reins.

Its was founded on labor socialism. Zionism was a thoroughly socialist movement. While I don’t agree to socialism in America, in Israel it seemed to work well. Some in my family who still live there (they did’nt leave like my immediate family), benefits from universal health care and guaranteed housing, despite being second-class citizens. Likud’s reforms benefitted the rich.

As to your comments regarding Nazi rule, suffering, and whining brats, I think you should be more sensitive to the Jewish citizens of Israel (this coming from an American of Palestinian origin who suffered because of Zionism). They are anything but whiners. Their state fails to deliver what their charter guarantees. You can’t really fault them for this.

It is normal – fathers work hard, build and save. Spoiled children protest, squander and ask for more.

Otherwise we would observe the constitution, keep the government small, do not start wars unnecessary and have a steady progress and prosperity. Looks like nature is more entertaining in this way.

Yes, this is the socialist utopia Beck wants us to start WW3 to defend. From 1949 to 2006 just the United States gave over $108 BILLION in aid to Israel – about $20,000 per person. In addition to this we give billions more to Egypt & Jordan to buy them off and make them more friendly to Israel. Also in addition to this Israel has gotten tens of billions and continues to receive billions from countries like Germany, etc. And for all this money Israel is a socialist government and there are nearly half a million people protesting for more free govt services paid for by other foreign governments. LOL

@Jaycen, you clearly don’t understand what those protests were. Go read articles on Israeli newspapers. Even Glenn Beck has referred to these protesters as “socialists,“ but he then goes on to try and play is down by suggesting their numbers are smaller than they actually are and that the demonstrations have been ”rigged” by leftists in the USA, implying it’s not truly grassroots. They are real socialists and Israel is very much a socialist country with top-down economic control. Go read the literature of even the supposedly “hard-right” Likud party, it’s a socialist organization. They are anti-Islam. They want to build more settlements and drive the Palestinians away, but they’re still socialist. The USSR was also agressive militarily, this didn’t make them any less commie.

This has been hyped in the liberal media. It’s not the largest protest in Israeli history. The media always exaggerates the numbers when it suits their agenda, and lowball those that don’t. Most Israelis know this is just bogus, top down, leftist Astroturf.

The Leftists had to have a bunch of bands and other entertainers to help draw in people. Every Israeli I know here thinks its dumb and purely political. The media in Israel, which is every bit as liberal as any in America, has been panting about this for weeks.

It is also known that this entire ‘movement’ was staged with the help of big Leftist organizations like the Israel Fund, and with help from Clinton’s people.

Israel’s problem is socialism. Plain and simple. Socialism will not work because socialism takes incentive from the people. Once the merit system is traded for socialism then the entire system becomes rotten to the core. You then have no checks and balance to the system. A few then control the mass and the mass have lost their freedoms to govern themselves. Exactly the same problem we have here. Israel is in a bankrupt state but does not recognize it because it has lived in this state since it’s inception. It’s very existence has depended upon aid from this country to subsidize its war machine and socialist govt. but now the party is over and look at what we have. Wake up America.

There is a difference between wisdom and knowledge. More and more young people are getting a higher education. In turn, more and more young people are becoming knowledgeable. The problem is that they don‘t realize that having knowledge doesn’t mean being wise (having wisdom). Wisdom can only come from life experience. To say that the world belongs to the young only shows your naivety. The problem is that “the young” try to change the world without knowing how it really works. They are being led by those that do know how it works and use the young to push an agenda that will eventually relinquish control from the young to the people pushing the agenda. The problem is, if someone gives you stuff, they can threaten to take it away when they want or if you don’t comply. Ever heard of the feudal system?

      A few questions:
What incentives exist if everything is equal?
Who will innovate if they don’t have to work? Remember, necessity is the mother of invention. No necessity, no innovation.
Why do other people have a right to what I have worked for?
Why do people think that being rich means you don’t deserve your goods/money?
Why does being poor mean you do deserve goods/money?

The last point: you can‘t change human nature or legislate fairness because LIFE ISN’T FAIR.

      Grow up.

Perhaps, if you’d look to God, and use your head, you’d realize that GB cannot call down anything, and knows it, I listent to the radio show.) the Pillar of Fire was to protect Israel as it obeyed God, and was led into the uncertain future. It was a sign that God was watching over Her, at her inception. The UN, not God, returned her to her heritage, and the nation looked for many years to the UN for the things they should have been looking to God for! Now they‘re discovering that it is useless to trust men for your protection and existence and if they’ll turn back to their God, they may well discover that He once again has a way to lead them out of the wilderness, and to true peace and acceptance, (By Him, not men.) Until then, we join Glenn and many around the world in praying for Israel.

Times are tough all over because of selfishness and lack of integrity, honesty, motivation etc. Don‘t give up but don’t do evil over good. We have to live within our means even if it means no house, tv, computer, cell phones or whatever else we could do without. Times will get better if we listen to the honest, hardworking people. Thank God there is employers that work 12 hours a day to get a business going so he can hire (maybe even train) those motivated to work. Appreciate life and say thank you to those that help you through the struggles as there is no free lunch. You are between the devils and the deep blue sea so enjoy what you have not what you want.

Very well said, so often, we can’t see what we have, because our eyes are clouded by the tears over being told no! Thank you for the reminder.

Social Justice = Redistribution of Wealth. This is Communism! Soros‘ Media Matters has been in Israel long before Glenn’s Restoring Courage, and that’s whose behind all this.

Glenn Beck says do your own research. Rush Limbaugh says Socialism fails whenever and wherever it is tried. Spain recently learned this with Green Jobs failing; ObamaNation doesn’t notice? Israel didn’t notice? The movement of Glenn Beck, worldwide will make a difference for good.

Israel….Welcome to the New World Order. That’s what is coming down all over the world. Let us know if those protests help anything. Only when you open your eyes and realize that Yashua/Jesus is the Messiah are things going to change, and in a really big way!

re : right after the president’s (no) jobs speech…
The one the’yre already downplaying? If I were John Boehner, I’d say, “Hey, if you’re not going to roll out the whole plan, Just do it on tv. We’ve got to much work to do here, to let you keep asking for joint sessions whenever your poll #’s need a good flushing” Then I’d stay home and watch the ball game! (Or maybe someone could bring in a Big Screen and put it behind BO‘s shoulder so it would look like he has everyone’s rapt attention!)

Not long at all. We know its just a matter of time so prepare for this madness coming to a city near you. It is quite alarming how fast this has transitioned from dictatorships to a parliamentary western nations.

      Winter truly is coming.

“Social Justice” “Human Rights”= NGO’s(financed by Soros) stoking the fires to topple the current governments. It’s not about human rights or social justice(whatever the hell that is), it‘s to further the political agenda of the NGO’s(shadow government). This is what democracy looks like..revolution now! Useful idiots. NGO’s have been doing this for years, it’s time to shut these rogue foreign policy making agitators down. Abolish all NGO’S and Soros! Send them packing.

TAKERS exist everywhere. This is not an AMERICAN problem , this is a nature problem. When the food provided by others runs out, the TAKERS go hungry. and demand that the Providers work harder and give them their expected benefits. The DEMOCRAT( and Socialist Leaders around the world) have spoon fed these TAKERS, and soon the gravy train will grind to a halt. The S*** is about to hit the fan.
