More Vid: NPR Execs Discuss When Not to Cover Climate Change Skeptics

We‘ve already covered James O’Keefe’s major NPR video of the day while highlighting our concerns. We‘ve also covered NPR’s response. Now, new video of the exchange between NPR executives and O‘Keefe’s fake actors has surfaced, and that’s worth covering, too.

The Washington Times has gotten a hold of extra content not featured in the original release. In the new video, executives Ron Schiller and Betsy Liley can be seen discussing how their science editor covers climate change. The pair seems to suggest NPR’s science coverage intentionally does not include comments from climate change skeptics:

Ms. Liley talks about a donor who would only give to NPR if the outlet did not talk to those who believe climate change is not happening:

“This funder said to us, ‘ you know you would like us to support your environmental coverage, but we really don‘t want to give you money if you’re going to talk to the people who think climate change is not happening,’” Ms. Liley recounted.

She continues to say, “It is a complicated thing, though. There’s a political question and there is a scientific question and we were talking to him about supporting the science desk. And so we’ve gone back to the science editor and asked how have you planned to cover this thing? Our coverage, if you look at our coverage, you would say that science coverage has accepted that climate change is happening and we’re covering it. But in politics, our Washington desk, might actually cover it should it resurface as a political issue…this debate.”

Schiller chimes in:

“The main point here is that it is not our responsibility to present the opinion of a non-scientist through our science desk. All educated scientists accept that climate change as fact. On the political side, however, where it is not accepted as fact, and the fact that debate is happening is news and it’s really important news. And our point of view requires that we cover that debate, if for no other reason than to have Americans understand there are still people who believe that it is not fact.”

We’ve reached out to NPR for comment on this video and have yet to hear back.

From the looks of the Times story, it appears it had access to the video and edited its own excerpts. Readers will notice that the Times video (featured in its original story) does not have closed captioning like O‘Keefe’s, and yesterday, a Times reporter even asked NPR CEO Vivian Schiller if she would accept donation’s from an organization affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

To be sure, it isn‘t odd for a group such as O’Keefe’s to tip a news outlet about a story.

On a side note, O’Keefe has theoretically released the full, unedited video. However, in order to view it one needs a upgraded Vimeo video account, available by subscription only.

UPDATE:

Readers no longer need an upgraded Vimeo account to view the unedited footage.

Well duh! Climate change is a fact! Doesn’t take a genius or ‘trained scientist’ to come to that conclusion. Climate has been changing since time began. There’s global warming and there’s global cooling. It’s mostly affected by sun spots and volcanic activity. The industry of man and cow farts have little to do with anything when it comes to climate change. I don’t think they get it. Both sides.

To say climate change is NOT happening is beyond stupid. It does happen. It is a natural phenomena that has repeated throughout history.

So the question is not IF it is happening, but WHAT IS THE CAUSE. Is it man? Maybe. Maybe not. The science cannot state such.

All those UN scientists and Gore have failed in every computer model they set out. They have difficulty reading a thermometer. They hide science that contradicts their view. Does it make them wrong? Maybe not.

But no scientist can pin a number on how much of the current climate issue is man-caused. Impossible to do so. They know it. That is why they stick with the polar bears. Stick with emotion when you lack facts.

Politician receive a wind fall of funding on both sides right or wrong, the Universities receive billion in tuition and student loans if they can force the issue on their students converting them into activist in hopes of a climate change careers(must pay for student loans with half truths and false data). As for the environment and the planet, I don’t think we are still choking on dinosaur farts and ancient volcanic ash. So as long humans don’t pollute lakes, streams, river, de-foresting or dump toxic waste in land fills I think the planet and our great-grand children will be just fine. No, I can’t remember the Cretaceous, or whenever it was that Texas was underwater.

Yes, what I was referring to is “weather,” the relatively short-term ebb and flow of hot and cold, dry and wet.

Climate change would be “weather” extended out over as long a period as can be studied, and scientists have tracked climate change.

Not to go back to prehistoric times, there’s no doubt at all that the period between the 14th and 19th centuries, the so-called “Little Ice Age,” was a little nippy compared to what preceded and followed it, a clear example of climate change.

Yes, it was really dry in 1930 and in 1933-1936, and we’ve had wet and dry spells since, but this doesn‘t bear on what I’ve called “Big Weather,” which has as much to do with the size as with the intensity or impact of weather phenomena.

No, 2/3 of the US has never been under snow–well, not in 12,000 years or so–but if you check out weather maps from earlier this winter, at times you will note individual storms covering 2/3 of the US, with a mixture of, say, rain in Oklahoma, sleet in Kentucky and snow in New York.

I’m not suggesting Big Weather is a catastrophe, since humans are ingenious and adaptable, and I’m not making any suggestions as to what if anything should be done about it, though many of you seem to think I am..

I’m not even stating, I’m simply asking, if cyclonic disturbances, hurricanes, typhoons, and the like, have or have not grown measurably larger within the last few decades, and if so, why?

Difficult to get funding proving the whole thing false….left has most of the money. When you begin the analysis of the data, anything that doesn’t fit can be thrown out. This is called erroneous data and it’s a long-used method in science to make the data fit the hypothesis. Anything opposing the hypothesis is simply discarded or ignored. Actually, numerous scientist disagree that humans cause significant climate change. They are erroneous data too. As a former meteorologist I can tell you, there is data that supports both sides of the argument, but one side is ignored because it doesn’t fit a multi-billion dollar GREEN initiative. It is all about money…simple. PS the ozone hole? All gases are thinner over the polls…bet you never heard about the ring of more dense ozone surrounding the hole, huh? It’s caused by centrifugal force and upper level convergence…..but that didn’t fit…always question science…it is almost always altered and frequently wrong.

Snowleopard {gallery of cat folks} said, “… even the UN scientists have admitted to having used false and altered data for the conclusion of global warming garbage to be propagated across the land.”

That is news to me. Can you send a link to that admission? I think you are remembering incorrectly. But you can prove me wrong by linking a source for that information.

You wouldn’t just make stuff up would you?

What happened to the holes in the OZONE? What about acid rain, global cooling, etc. I didn’t know consensus meant truth

I thinkthat if you check credentials you will find more pseudo scientists that support AGW then bonified scientists. Whenever someone says they are an expert in climate change the first thing I do is Google them to see what their credentials are and where their real expertise lies. When it comes to AGW supporters you will find social scientists, liberal arts majors, photogrpahers, tree-huggers, and people that simply attended one of A; “the hypocrit” Gores weekend seminars, etc. Rarely do you see meteorologists, atmospheric physicists, etc. So the statment made by the NPR VP of Nonsense is all nonsense. Let me qualify myself: Retired USAF meteorologist with 20 years experience.
