‘Mormon F**kface,‘ ’Mormon Cultist’: Attacks on Romney’s Faith Surface — Again

The Blaze’s Erica Ritz contributed to this report.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is no stranger to controversy surrounding his The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints membership. Both in the 2008 and 2012 electoral cycles, he has fielded numerous anecdotal attacks — anti-Mormon incursions that have continued despite DNC chair and congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s (D-Fla.) pledge that the contender’s faith will be off-limits during the 2012 cycle.
But actions and words are two very different things (plus, let’s face it — even if Schultz was being genuine, it’s impossible to prevent every Democrat from making bigoted statements). This month, alone, attacks on Romney’s faith have been prevalent. Take, for instance, Newsbusters’ note about a Time Magazine article that can certainly be seen as contributing to the anti-LDS rhetoric.
On June 13, psychoanalyst Dr. Justin Frank took to the Time Ideas blog to pen an article entitled, “The Root of Mitt Romney’s Comfort With Lying.” According to Frank, these supposed falsities can be blamed upon Mormonism.
“But this pattern of lying and not acknowledging it, even when confronted directly, has persisted and led me to look for other sources of Romney’s behavior and of his clear comfort with continuing it,” Frank writes. “I think much of this comfort stems from his Mormon faith.”
But it doesn’t end there, as he also points out Romney’s alleged lies and analyzes how Mormonism apparently allows for these infractions to take place. Frank goes on to claim that faith traditionally takes first seat with Mormons and that adherents allow it to, often times, trump fact. Here’s some more of his analysis:
I found myself discussing this situation with several colleagues, and we agreed that Romney doesn’t lie. Let me repeat: Mitt Romney doesn’t lie. He is telling the truth as he sees it — and truth it is, the facts notwithstanding. This is not simply a case of Hamlet arguing about point of view, saying, “For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” This is about a conflict between evidence and faith. There is a long tradition in the Mormon belief system in which evidence takes second place to faith. Examples abound, as when two Mormon elders who were questioned about the inconsistency in passages from the Book of Mormon said, “We know the Book of Mormon is true and that it contains the Word of God even in the face of evidence that appears contradictory,” according to The Mormon Missionaries by former Mormon Janice Hutchison. Thus there are no lies, only faith-based certainty that translates as truth for which no apology is needed, since what was said was not a lie.
Children learn to lie at different times in their development, but almost always by the age of 10. Their lies help establish them as separate from their parents, especially if the parents believe them. And one doesn’t have to be a Mormon to lie — just look at John Edwards or former Nevada Senator John Ensign. But in the Mormon Church, there was a decision to accept authority as true — whether or not evidence supported it. Hence Joseph Smith, the founder of the faith in 1820, claimed he was illiterate and received the Book of Mormon directly from God. But he could read, and read very well.

And that’s only a portion of the writing. One cannot help but wonder where to find Frank‘s scathing article repudiating Obama’s lies and blaming them on his faith (one clue: it doesn’t exist).
Then, there’s the Twitter ”hashtag wars,” an ongoing phenomena in social media — and one that was used this weekend by some on the Left in an effort to disparage Romney’s Mormon faith. In an unexpected cultural twist, conservatives actually hold their own in this particular forum, and have been known to sarcastically hijack leftist hashtags.
For example, when the president asked tweeters to describe why they like Obamacare, #ILikeObamacare started trending worldwide, but with with nearly ten sarcastic responses for every genuine tweet. Some of the more memorable examples included: “#IlikeObamaCare because I want unelected bureaucrats making as many personal decisions for me as possible,“ ”#ILikeObamacare as much as I like My father-in-law’s wife,“ and ”#ILikeObamacare because I think if you work, then I should benefit.”
Over the weekend, however, #RomneyInTwoWords and #ObamaInTwoWords set the stage for another Twitter face-off and, perhaps not surprisingly, a number of Obama supporters used the hashtag to unleash a wave of anti-Mormon vitriol.
Twitchy captured a number of the tweets:
@Deb_Libby: #RomneyInTwoWords Mormon Menace
@deargalaxy: #RomneyInTwoWords Mormon underwear
@MrJamesDudley: #RomneyInTwoWords F*cking Mormon…do you need any more words than that
@GuileOfTheGods: #RomneyInTwoWords Multiple wives #Mormon…
@Mystic_Jeff_A: #RomneyInTwoWords Mormon f*ckface
@WarLordwrites: #RomneyInTwoWords Mormon cultist
@zarahxelyse: #RomneyInTwoWords F*ckin Mormon
@DRMcLellan1893: #RomneyInTwoWords: Mormon Vampire #ObamaInTwoWords Pragmatic Diplomat
@ChocolateThund9: #RomneyinTwoWords Mormon fa*got
@CockyButCool: #RomneyInTwoWords : mormon bi*ch
As Twitchy notes, the hypocrisy of the leftist ideology that claims to be “tolerant,” yet writes such bigoted messaging, remains largely unchecked. However, examining the Frank example (from Time and looking at these most recent tweets and exploring the recent media track-record, these attacks are far from uncommon.
In February, New York Times columnist Charles Blow tweeted that Mitt Romney should “stick that in [his] magic underwear,” a mere 13 days after writing about the horrors of bullying. In that case, the National Review reports that the paper’s public editor declined to intervene, ostensibly because Blow is an opinion writer.
“I agree this type of tweet isn’t a good idea. I have generally taken the view that ad hominem attacks are problematic journalistically…And I personally disagree with criticizing anyone based on religious belief. Because the writer in this case is an Op-Ed writer, whose opinions are his own, I do not plan to intervene to disagree with the opinion itself. But I think tweets of this kind are a mistake,” Art Brisbane reportedly wrote.

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell
Let‘s also remember MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell and his anti-Mormon diatribe earlier this year. Here’s a snapshot of some of the host’s words about Romney and the LDS:
“Mormonism was created by a guy in upstate New York in 1830 when he got caught having sex with the maid and explained to his wife that God told him to do it.” [...]
“Forty-eight wives later, Joseph Smith’s lifestyle was completely sanctified in the religion he invented to go with it,” O’Donnell continued. “Which Mitt Romney says he believes.”
One wonders if these anecdotal examples are symptomatic of a greater issue or even a willingness on the part of Democratic operatives — or the Obama re-election campaign itself — to use Mormonism against Romney. Interestingly, even members of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” have pondered how the Obama campaign will handle the Republican’s faith in the general election.
Despite the negativity, in January, The Blaze examined the issue of Mormonism and its potential role in the 2012 campaign. In the end, our analysis concluded that the vast majority of evangelicals and religious conservatives would not allow theological differences to prevent a vote for Romney.
While we know that this is the case for those on the right, the aforementioned examples do cause some pause when considering how far leftists will go in deriding the former Massachusetts governor.

So much for their kindness and benevolence for ALL the people…

obama sucks, mitt romney sucks. he isn’t a conservative, and is probably one of the most smug, and least likable guys the GOP has coughed up in memory. Say what you will about John McCain, but he is ten times the man Mitt is. He was a war hero, Mitt dodged the draft five times.
And obama beat mccain easily, which will happen again. If i were in the GOP, i’d be planning for 2016, getting an actual conservative who can win on the ballot. This guy is a joke.

Quite the opposite, they are incestuous, hateful and make people’s lives miserable any chance they get. There is no point in having a discussion with them based on reason, history, theology or evidence– as they begin indoctrinating and brainwashing their children at two years old. I’m with Clive– I am not voting at all. I refuse to vote due to my religious conscience as a Christian.
It is no surprise that Americans are hopeless and despondent– first a muslim cultist, now a mormon cultist. False gods, false prophets, false books, the two have so much in common it is chilling.

REALLY, Romney, Mormons, you didn’t know this day was coming?
Now, I am going to vote for Romney, and I love and trust Glenn Beck–but really?
Grow up and look at the truths which are just so many elephants in the room.
The Joseph Smith and the golden tablets story sounds eerily like that of a very different prophet who kept going off into the forest to get God’s messages. Big difference is that the Mormons are a very hospitable, hardworking, tolerant bunch….That’s all good enough for me, but the Mormons would do well to get their Joseph Smith, golden tablets, holy-underwear-with-holes-in-it, talking points together. The questionable points of your history will persist until you deal with them. C’mon, you’re on stage.

Paul supports freedom, which means for everyone. Even though myself and probably most Paul fans think it’s morally wrong we also understand that not everything that’s morally wrong should be illegal.
I don’t think it’s a false understanding, but I do think he needs to be mindful about Islam and what it’s all about.
Well, even if he does, he sure doesn’t do it to the extent any other does. He’s the most consistent candidate.
Um..RP people don’t do that.
No one is distorting facts. Romney is not as bad as BO, but he might as well be. He sure doesn’t believe in anything RP does.

As far as freedom goes, Ron Paul certainly is for it, but he nor does his supporters do not hold a monopoly on that passion. Except for the most radical Liberals, I believe that most Americans are for freedom. I believe that Romney is also for freedom. But for many, many Ron Paul supporters, it quite very frequently, often, many times, and on numerous occasions happens that if someone does not agree with THEIR definition, or RPs definition of freedom–whatever that may be–you are a communist, a progressive, a–what have you. “but he nor does his supporters do not hold a monopoly on that passion.”
I certainly agree with that.
Yeah, and I would say they shouldn’t assume one is against freedom simply because they don’t’ support Ron Paul. I think what it is, is this: RP has backed up what he’s been saying for years and years with action. These other guys haven’t. So when people come along who honestly are for freedom and then support Romney or BO, it causes confusion and anger, then they lash out (which they shouldn’t’ do). I don’t think Romney or BO are setting out to destroy America, they may honestly believe what they’re doing is right. However, a lot of what they have voted on and believe in, etc is clearly against the Constitution and freedom. By “freedom” I mean someone who actually follows the Constitution and doesn’t support any law that would go against that and wants to keep Gov. out of our lives. Not saying I agree with everything in the constitution but getting someone in there who would follow it and drastically slash Gov. would be a great start.
Thank you. I try my best.

Dr. Paul, who does have some really good ideas, is looney enough to muscle himself out of the GOP campaign. Had he run wit the Libertarian Party, he’d still be on the forefront in their party, not taking the back seat to anyone. Simply put, he’s libertarian, not republican.

“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so. The nations of the earth have transgressed every law that God has given, they have changed the ordinances and broken every covenant made with the fathers, and they are like a hungry man that dreameth that he eateth, and he awaketh and behold he is empty.”

To illustrate: Cain, Ham, and the whole n e g r o race have been cursed with a black skin, the mark of Cain, so they can be identified as a caste apart, a people with whom the other descendants of Adam should not intermarry.”

Looking stupid would be your problem, not the mormon’s. Please apply context to your citations:
“Brigham Young’s comments can be read as a condemnation of abuse and rape of helpless black women, and not necessarily as an overtly racist statement condemning interracial marriage in all times and places.
In 1863, couplings between black women and white men would virtually always be a relationship of a staggering power imbalance, with few rights for the woman, who was often forced into sexual activity. Her children would have been automatic slaves if she was a slave, and the men under no legal responsibility to provide for her or the children. (This failure to provide for offspring was a common Mormon criticism of Gentile non-marriage relationships when contrasted with plural marriage.)
Unlike contemporary 1860s fears for the virtue of white women when subjected to the predation of black men,[1]. Brigham was far more worried about white men abusing their position of political and cultural superiority.”

“This is not to say that Brigham did not share some ideas about the desirability of keeping races separate; virtually everyone of his era did. American ethnologists taught that whites and blacks were separately created races, the mixture of which would corrupt both.[2]
But, when in the same speech Brigham Young condemns the whites for their treatment of blacks, and threatens punishment for white men who have what is likely forced intercourse with black women, it is not fair to portray him as a ravening racist with no concern for the downtrodden. His fire and brimstone is all for the aggressor; his sympathy is for those who were mistreated.”

YOU ARE BRAINWASHED!
PROOF you are stupid:
mormons have been teaching this for decades:
Brigham H. Roberts authored the six-volume Comprehensive History of the Church. In 1921, a man investigating Mormonism asked Roberts to answer five questions. These questions vexed Roberts, because he could find no suitable answer. He then posed those same five questions to LDS President Heber J. Grant, Grant’s counselors, the Twelve Apostles, and to the Quorum of the Seventy. They too, were unable to provide suitable answers. These five questions are:
Linguistics. 1) Why, if the American Indians were descended from Lehi, was there such diversity in their languages, and why were there no vestiges of Hebrew in any of them?
THE ANSWER IS BECAUSE IT’S A LIE FROM SATAN! THE HUMAN GENOME DIVERSITY PROJECT PROVES THAT THE BOOK OF MORMON IS ALL LIES AND THAT THE NATIVE AMERICANS ARE FROM ASIAN DECENT!
evil lie number one proven to be a lie by ARCHEOLOGY!

ONCE AGAIN – THE LIE OF THE BOOK OF MOREMAN TEACHES NOTHING OF VALUE BUT THE RANTINGS OF A PAGAN DRIVEN BY SATAN!
ARCHEOLOGY PROVES THE BOOK OF MOREMAN WRONG!
NUMBER 3) Why was Nephi stated to have a bow of steel? Jews did not have steel at that time, and no iron was smelted in the Americas until the SPANISH COLONIZATION!
see these are called FACTS which are either proven or disproven by SCIENCE – which I personally love very much [SCIENCE PROVES THE BIBLE TRUE]
QUESTION NUMBER 4) Why does the Book of Mormon mention “swords and cimeters” when scimitars (the current spelling) did not come about until the rise of Islam after 500 A.D.?
SEE all of these stupid things in the book of MOREMAN are lies – this boy never saw Gabriel – he talked to SATAN if anyone!!! ARCHEOLOGY PROVES YOU WRONG PAGAN – REPENT!
QUESTION NUMBER 5) Why does the Book of Mormon mention silk, when silk did not exist in the Americas at that time?
SEE silk was not in the America’s until King James wanted the colonies to grow the silk worm in 1623,
all of these questions are proof that you follow a lie. all of the history is made up by the pagan joey smith… follow him right to hell if you say you are mormon

Joseph Smith claimed that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth (History of the Church, 4:461). If that’s true, why has it been subjected to thousands of corrections and alterations since it was first published? Also, some of the LDS scholars to whom I referred in the second paragraph found that the American Indians are genetically more similar to Asians. No Hebrew link can be made through DNA analysis. NONE – the HUMAN GENOME DIVERSITY PROJECT reveals that not one Native American comes from the jews – not one tribe. none.

Am I supposed to believe that you, who writes with such vitriolic hate in your messages, are a follower of Christ? You can find 5 questions to ask ANY religion which would seem to ‘disprove’ its veracity based solely on what science tells you. Didn‘t Paul say to the members of Christ’s church in Corinth ‘Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth’? I believe science supports religion when looked at through the lens of faith – but you seem to completely discredit any concept of faith.
You know, I’ve never seen a Mormon on these posts trying to forcefully convert someone to their faith, but I have seen a hundred attacks on Mormons made in bad faith by those who claim to be ‘Christian.‘ If you spent as much time reading the good things I’ve read about the Mormon church and the charity work they do as you do reading anti-Mormon literature and memorizing talking points about out-of-context quotes from Mormon leaders, perhaps you would at least think twice before spewing out such hate-filled paragraphs.
You keep referring to Mormons as ‘from the devil.’ Let me tell you – when I read your comments I get the same feeling I get when I see something I know is evil in my heart. Mormons aren’t perfect, and they don’t claim to be – but heaven knows I’d rather talk to a devout Mormon about God than you. the Book of Mormon does not say that the native americans are descendants of Lehi. it only says that Lehi and his family, and the Mulekites, and the Jaredites are *part of* the Native american ancestery. Now, if you want to say that “linuistically-speaking” that Mormonsim is a satanic lie than you need to at least keep up with the latest studies. Meet Brian D. Stubbs. Ashley Montague, suggests that the horse never became extinct in America. According to Montague, the size of post-Columbian horses provides evidence that the European horses had bred with native American horses. (Cheesman, 194, 181.)
Lastly, we must acknowledge that there are archaeological remains which suggest that the horse survived in Book of Mormon times. In 1957, for instance, at Mayapan (a site corresponding to Book of Mormon lands/times) horse remains were discovered at a depth considered to be pre-Columbian. Likewise, in southwest Yucatan, non-Mormon, Henry Chapman Mercer, found what may likely be pre-Columbian horse remains in three caves. Excavations in a cave in the Mayan lowlands in 1978 also turned up horse remains. (Sorenson, 1992, 99.)”

As cor cinmeters – “As for ”cimeters” – “Cimeter is one of a number of spellings used in nineteenth-century America for the word that has become standardized in more recent English as scimitar. The dictionary defines scimitar as, “1: a saber having a curved blade with the edge on the convex side. . . . 2: something resembling a scimitar (as in sharpness or shape), esp: a long-handled billhook.”42 The primary distinction between a scimitar and a sword is that the former has a curved blade.”
“Clemency C. Coggins, a specialist in the Maya civilization, believes the modern machete “to be a direct descendant of the wooden sickle-like tools found [preserved] in the Cenote” or well at Chichen Itza.45 Hayden observes that “such a tool might also serve for defense against predators, snakes, and strangers while in the field”; consequently, “the agricultural tool and the weapon may have been one item.“46”
That establishes an “ancestor” to the scimeter n the americas. And, once again, as I mentioned in a previous post, it is important to place your posts into context. In this case, Boo of Mormon context. remember, the cimeter would be used for taking care of crops / plants… (con’t)

When the survivors fled to the king, he had to arm them quickly. Thus “I did arm them with bows, and with arrows, with swords, and with cimeters, and with clubs, and with slings, and with all manner of weapons which we could invent” (Mosiah 9:16). Nothing is said of what materials were used to make these arms, but given the emergency situation it is plausible that they used or based them upon tools that they already employed for everyday purposes, such as wooden implements for clearing vegetation and slings and the bow and arrow for hunting. Since the Lamanites were without armor at this time, even such relatively crude weapons could have been effective.”

‘A curved wood weapon with inset stone blades. While the Book of Mormon cimeter may have been a curved wooden blade, the Nephite and Lamanite use of armor, starting in the battles of the first century BC, could have brought about a need for more effective blades. In a recent study of Mesoamerican warfare, Hassig describes a curved, clublike weapon that he labels a “short-sword.”47 He knows of their presence only from the post-Classic codices (after AD 1,000).48 This device consisted of a curved piece of hardwood approximately 18 inches long with obsidian blades inset into its cutting end. Hassig credits this slashing weapon with a number of characteristics that clubs, for example, could not provide.49
Such a weapon may have survived right up to the Spanish conquest in highland Guatemala. One Spanish account of a native tradition relates that “the weapons with which it is said they fought were bows and arrows and certain cutlasses that they say were made of flint.“50 The curved form of the end of the ”short-sword” could justify the term cutlasses.
(snip)
“Other curved weapons. The possibility has been suggested that a strange double-curved weapon held in the left hand of the warrior figure on the Loltún cave relief (see p. 34) might be considered a scimitar/cimeter.55 ”

“The production of Old World ”silk” requires both silkworms and the mulberry trees upon whose leaves they feed, which critics have charged is impossible.
However, there are several examples of silk or silk-like fabric in pre-Columbian America:
wild silkworms do exist, and some commentators insisted that the Amerindians spun and wove it from their cocoons
hair from rabbit bellies was also spun into a cloth dubbed “silk” by the Spanish conquerors
floss from the ceiba (silk-cotton) tree was made into a “soft delicate cloth,” kapok.
fibers from the wild pineapple were also prized for their ability to be woven into a fine, durable fabric
cotton cloth in Mexico from A.D. 400 is “even, very fine, and gossamer-thin.”[1][2]”

“Joseph Smith claimed that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth (History of the Church, 4:461). If that’s true, why has it been subjected to thousands of corrections and alterations since it was first published?”
The vast majority of those corrections are grammar. They revise the Hebraic form of writing to modern English and the others were from errors made at the printing press. Very few changes were made in the text itself. And it is the most perfect of all books since it more plainly testifies ofthe divinity of Christ. More than any other book. By so doing it authenticates the correctness of the Bible.
RE DNA. you said, “No Hebrew link can be made through DNA analysis. NONE – the HUMAN GENOME DIVERSITY PROJECT reveals that not one Native American comes from the jews – not one tribe. none. ”
Except when you include the more recent findings of Haplogroup X.

Sorry DARREN, my fault. I wasn’t specific enough, that is unless you guys are Romney, Beck, and Reid. That’s kinda what I meant by prominent successful Mormons. Also, what I meant by J. Smith and the Golden Tablets is… well, exactly that– you know, the forest, the apparitions, the missing golden tablets–that stuff. No one’s really getting into that here.
Unless you can point me to sources of these prominent successful Mormons commenting on the origins of their church in a meaningful way–
you are just proving my point.
To repeat what I have already stated– I cannot help but think that this silence is in deference to church heirarchy and leadership– and therein lies the source of the doubt and worry of the undecideds. Personally, as stated above, I do not fall into the undecided category, and I have no problem with the Mormon church. You might take the time to consider my comments as coming from a faithful member of Beck’s movement who is simply able to imagine how those who can still possibly be “undecided” are going to decide who to vote for. .

Ummmm, who brought these issues up? What is it you’d like to know? These tpoics are not brought up hardly at all so that’s probably why you have hardly read about them. Frankly, ther’s not much to say. Apparations are accepted enought in the bible so why not Joseph Smith. He received golden plates as testified by him, 11 others ho never recanted their testimony that the existed, and given back to the Lord when their purpose was ulfilled. Joseph Smith was frequenly ridiculed for even making the clai to golden plates saying that people did not use such a method to keep records. Nowadays it’s been established that they indeed did.

I disagree. For those who are not sure that they will not vote for Mitt Romney because Mitt Romney’s a mormon, I’ve been very consistent: Good then don’t. I’ve never cared to pursuade them than to say, “good luck with that no vote since he’s up against Obama”. Also, for the critics ofthe Church, we can have the utopian of responses and that won’t silence them. It is most definitely not from the lack of responses available that critics abound. Look at “Mutiny” far below. While he hasn’t made a stink today, he’s one who has been responded to time, and time, and time, and time again yet still makes reference to the same aguments. He’s very typical to the tiresome dialogues which occure between LDS members and their critics.

Look at Glenn Beck. He’s Mormon. He’s a good guy. He’s a man of true faith. He loves God and his fellow man, with all his heart and soul.

I wish the Republicans could get a born again, real Christian on the ticket. I mean, Romney seems like an OK guy but, have you ever read the Book of Mormon or The Pearl of Great Price or Doctrines and Covenants? I’m sorry, but no rational person can believe those three books AND the Bible.
You can belive that Adam and Eve sinned and, because of that, we have the fall of man and we are all born sinners. You can believe that there is a punishment for sins – eternal seperation from God in the lake of fire. You can believe that Jesus IS God (and NOT a created being), that he was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life and died on a cross for the sins of the world. You can believe He bodily rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. You can believe that faith alone in Christ alone is sufficient to have your sins forgiven and to get you to heaven someday. You can believe Jesus is physically returning for His chruch. OR you can be a Mormon – you can’t do both. It really is that simple.
Mitt Romney may be a great politician, He may make a great leader of the free world. He may be the best husband, dad and businessman this nation ever knew. But he is NOT a Christian.

If you are aware of these then please explain to me how the Mormon beliefs such as these;
God used to be a man on another planet (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321; Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 345; Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 333).
After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345-347, 354).
How do these stand up to what the Bible says? Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone yet the Journal of Discourses says different, how does that work, you cannot believe in both at the same time they are mutually exclusive.
And how is this for ignorance alert;
The book of Mormon is more correct than the Bible, (History of the Church, vol. 4, p. 461.)
There is ZERO proof beyond what Joseph Smith says.
There are many in the LDS church that do not know these things, those I pray for.

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 6:03amDeath let me answer with another question: Was Christ once man like us? Did Christ have a Heavenly Father whom He could call His God just as we can call Heavenly Father our God? Is Christ God? And can the glorified, resurrected Christ properly be called “perfect man,” as he was called by the early Christian father Ignatius (”To the Smyrnaeans,” 4, The Apostolic Fathers, 2nd ed., translated by J.B. Lightfoot and J.R. Harmer, ed. and rev. by M.W. Holmes, Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, MI, 1989, p. 111)?
We know some intriguing details about Christ – that He once was man (or like man, though Only Begotten Son of God), that He was divine, that He died and resurrected and sits on His throne with the Father, with whom He is one. One can speculate on analogies between Christ and the Father, but we know essentially nothing about the “history” of God the Father except that He is eternal. Lorenzo Snow, a President of the Church, once said as you quoted earlier “As man now is, God once was: as God now is, man may be.” This controversial passage is clearly applicable to Christ, a God who became mortal for a time and yet was still and is still God.

His work made it possible for us to become as He is, in a limited sense, for we can receive glorious resurrected bodies (Phil. 3:21; 1 Cor. 15:40-45), we can become “joint-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:14-18), we can “put on the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4-10), and we can become “like him” (1 John 3:2). Indeed, Christ even went so far as to say, “Ye are gods” (John 10:34), in reference to the divine potential of human beings.
While He and the Father are the one true God, whom we will always worship, He does want us to become more like the Father (Matt. 5:48) and that possibility is there because of Christ. Thus, thinking of Christ and our relationship to Him, what Lorenzo Snow said is accurate. However, it appears that Lorenzo Snow’s quote also applies to the Father, indicating that He also experienced a period of mortality, but we know nothing specific. But before you let the idea of “God once being like man” offend you, remember that it is explicitly true about Christ Himself. If Christ were the same being as God the Father, then it would also be true of the Father as well, so non-LDS critics who accept the doctrine of the Trinity shouldn’t get so upset.

Of course, we believe that God and Christ are separate individuals, one in purpose, heart, and mind. But, in the spirit of pure speculation, let me ask if it is possible that Christ, during His mission on the earth, was doing that which He had seen the Father do? In John 5:19, Christ said “The Son can do nothing, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”
Some people have speculated on what is meant by John 5:19 and on what Lorenzo Snow meant, but we do not know and I get very nervous when people pretend they know. Certainly there are many difficult and foolish questions which can be asked in this arena. The important point is that God, Christ, and man are of the same “species,” and that man has divine potential to become more like Christ and the Father (e.g., see Romans 8:14-18; 2 Peter 1:4-10; 1 John 3:2). This concept was understood by the early Christians.
Knowing who Christ is makes me very suspicious of anyone who says that we will become EXACTLY like Him. The Bible teaches that we can become “joint heirs” (Rom. 8:14-18) and can become “like him” (I John 3:2) and indeed, need to become like him (Matt. 5:48) and be one with him (John 17:21-23).

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 6:09amStronger still, Paul in Philippians 2: 5-7 seems to urge us to pursue that goal, not through puffery, but through humble service:
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant….”
However, I sense a world of difference between the “small g” gods that Christ mentioned (John 10:34) in speaking of the potential of humans (my view) and God the Eternal Father, who is the one and only everlasting God (see also I Cor. 8:5,6). The reference to humans as potential “gods” is clearly meant in a limited sense, but the word God uses nevertheless is “gods.” Obviously, we know too little to explain anything in depth about the next life and about “the glory that shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18). We are like microbes looking up through the microscope and speculating about the Scientist who observes us. We are children, following after our very wise and mature Father, knowing little more than a young child does of the things of God. This we know: the glory is to the Father (and Christ) forever. May we return to their presence.
If you have any further questions, or need further explanations on our doctrine feel free to ask. You can also find answers to any questions you may have about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at http://www.lds.org or http://www.mormon.org. http://www.fair

They have made God in their image and seek to rewrite Christ’s teachings from within. Christ taught us to love God and our neighbors and be responsible for our own actions. Black Liberation Theology teaches that we are not responsible because, like Christ, we are victims of the evil opressors that deserve hatred not love. They belittle and mock God as being a different God from the one to whom the slaves prayed. Mormons are taught to follow the teachings of Christ keep God’s commandments. How can anyone believe Black Liberation Theology is Christian and Mormons are not? By their fruits ye shall know them.

Not even close. You are comparing popes who came well after the Catholic church was founded and we‘re corrupt to the guy J’S, who thought of, wrote the manual for and changed a religion go suit his personal desires and whims. Big difference.
