Mormons, Catholics, Baptists & Jews Come Together to Plot Defense Plan for ‘Religious Liberty’

Mormons, Catholics, Baptists & Jews Discuss Religious Liberty in D.C.

Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention (AP)

Conservative faith leaders of all stripes gathered on Thursday in Washington, D.C., to discuss the future of religious freedom in America. This event is the latest in a series of developments that were sparked by the Obama administration’s controversial contraceptive mandate. What started as a Catholic protest against the regulatory structure has expanded to include people of all faiths.

(Related: University of Notre Dame Sues Obama Admin Over Contraceptive Mandate)

Little did the federal government suspect that its new regulations forcing religious groups to provide birth control free of charge would create such a wide-ranging firestorm among divergent faith communities. Religion News Service has more information about the collaborative effort that is underway:

Like-minded religionists of several denominations — including Southern Baptist leader Richard Land and Baltimore Archbishop William Lori — gathered in Washington Thursday (May 24) to organize a response to what they see as the sorry state of religious freedom in America today.

“We must all be willing to stand up and tell the government ‘no,’” said Land, who heads the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. “Secularists don’t like people of faith because the ultimate authority for us is not the state. The ultimate authority is God.”

Sponsored by the Ethics and Public Policy Center’s American Religious Freedom Program, the daylong summit attracted conservative Catholics, Baptists, Orthodox Jews, Orthodox Christians, Mormons and others, almost all of whom painted a dismal picture of religious freedom.

Mormons, Catholics, Baptists & Jews Discuss Religious Liberty in D.C.

While there were some stark calls, like Land’s, for religious freedom protections, the 350-person group also called for civility in addressing liberty-related issues. The contraceptive mandate was the main topic on the agenda, but the faithful delved into other subjects that they fear could come under attack. These issues include the freedom for believers to abstain from workplace activities that contradict their views and for religious groups to continue to have the freedom to hire people they so choose.

Earlier this year, the Obama administration lost a Supreme Court battle surrounding religious employment issues. While the federal government sought to challenge the long-held ministerial exemption, the Supreme Court, for the first time, recognized its existence and constitutionality.

Considering these developments, there’s no telling how faith communities will react throughout the 2012 campaign. While conservative churches may move against Obama, at least on policy (tax law forbids churches to advocate for or against candidates), more liberal faith supporters may rally around him. Either way, it seems the contraceptive mandate has rallied people of diverse faith views to at least come to the table and chat.

Obama is casting our Pearls to the swine. He wants our wealth God has given this country to go to countries who worship death, cows, trees and who had a chance when their grandfathers the Cain way over Abel. Their forefathers wrought poverty upon their own people. We did not do it. We have sent missionaries. Some have become Christians and suffer terribly for spreading the Word. Others kill, torture, maim, mock and starve those who are willing to follow Christ. We owe them nothing but the Word of God. If they lived right under God’s blessing, they would have more. No one wants to see people starve, but you cannot help those who will not reach out to God. Before it is over, they will all bow. God said they would. We have tried to feed the world and they have tried to kill us. Where we messed up is allowing our children to mix with people on TV where we would otherwise keep them away from. It has for several generations of children been an electronic babysitter. People have failed to keep the Words of God in the forefront of their brains and so their brains are filled with lies, deceit and fornications that will eventually take them and your grandchildren to hell. People better know that Hollywood is not going to “outcool” God for there is a payday coming from all that has been allowed to transpire in this country.

Wow BLACKYB, you seem to know your religious bigotry pretty well. Do you know the first chapter of the first book of your Bible? Dominion over all the earth was given by God to all men, not just to the descendants of Shem. And Later in Exodus God told His people to Love their enemies, to give them food and water as needed. Perhaps you might want to get to know the God you profess to know so that you will not be one of His enemies when He returns. This meeting is for the purpose of preserving the personal role of each and every persons conscience in the living of their own lives without governmental sanctions, persecutions, and interference.

Forget the Catholic Church, the Liberal Catholic Church is part of the problem. In the fight for Life the Catholic Church lent lip service and remained neutral. In the Obamacare struggle, the Catholic Church supported Obama care until it learned how Catholic Senators and Obama double crossed the Catholic Church for its support. Homosexual Marriage will be no different to the American Catholic Church. The American Catholic Bishops authorized known homosexuals to become priests 30 years ago with the matra of “condemm the sin not the sinner.” The Church has been seriously crippled by the Sex Abuse. If Christ returned to Earth today, the Catholics would crucify him.

Let’s not be so hasty to throw out the Bride of Christ, part of the “Church”. God addressed all 7 churches in Revelation, challenging most for their apostasy. He’s perfectly capable of judging. Which one of these 7 do you not see in yours? With 196 major denominations, what are the chances of choosing the “right” one?

Yes, the Catholic Church has an issue on the ground with liberalism and apostasy. In some parishes, it teaches a perverse form of ‘tolerance’ and distorts “Dignity”. It pushes “feel good’ and distorts “God is Love” to the point that some believe that obeying his commands are irrelevant. This church like many, has to heal itself from the inside out with help from God.

Many are deceived because they had rather believea a lie than the Truth. These people are used to open the eyes of those who have been sleeping on the watch and have allowed their children to follow after Hollywood rather than their parents. This battle should have been fought before the 2008 election. The real solution to the problem is the removal from office of obama and all of his people in the House and Senate. Keep remembering that Obama was elected by only 30% of registered voters. There was a 58% turnout and of the people who actually voted, 52% voted for Obama. Multiply 0.58 and 0.52 and you get 0.30. Just 30% of registered voters saddled us with Obama. Forget about the polls and just vote. Go with God.

That‘s what I don’t understand. The different old school religions keep saying Mormon‘s aren’t Christian’s, but they are. They believe in the same Jesus as the most ardent Southern Baptist does. I’m not a Mormon, but as a young man in the military I spent 3 1/2 years in their midst in Idaho, and never met a one who offended me in any way, or tried to convert or do anything else to me. I worked directly under a sergeant who was Mormon and he was terrific to work for and with.

What happened to the separation of church and state. What’s this bulls”t about what the religion of the candidate is, I thought it wasn’t suppose to matter. I‘ll bet if he were a Muslim there wouldn’t be a word said, which in my opinion is when the screaming should start.

Obama and his “everyone get an equal shot”, He’s so transparent you can see through him all the way to his grandfather the Brit hater.

Now the left is on the hunt that Romney’s great grandfather (might} have been involved in polygamy, but the fact that Obama’s actual father (was in fact) a bigamist seems to carry no wights at all.

I guess it back to the old clechie

doesn’t upset the left as all.

I think anytime polygamy is brought up, bigamy should be standing there just along side to take the slings and arrows fired at both groups. I hope they use rubber arrow points.

I love Obama’s outlook (everyone of us is equal, it’s just that some of us a more equal) He uses this in all

Joseph Smith actually had a vision in which he received revelation to guide the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Book of Mormon is a record translated by the gift and power of God as a second witness to the divine life of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. I praise God every day for the preservation of that record and the testimony of Jesus and his divinity that I have obtained. I converted from Catholicism to Mormonism and have never regretted it.

Yes, Mormon doctrine is that we are the children of God, and isn’t it a law of nature that children can grow up to be like their parents?

There are no guarantees, but that is the point of the gospel of Jesus – to become like Him. Why do you think he said, “Come, follow me?” if not to be like Him?

It is not blasphemy – it is the goal. Jesus’ work and glory is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of mankind. Eternal life is the quality of life we can enjoy if we are worthy enough to be like Him.

ABBEYGIRL is a Latter Day Saint. You know that. Why cause contention by asking her a question you apparently know the answer to?

We may differ in points of doctrine, but we worship God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ.

We believe that Jesus is the Christ, and that He died for all of us, that all men may be forgiven of their sins if they repent and follow Him.

We believe we show our love to Jesus by following His commandments, also by loving and serving our fellow man.

There are over 6 million Latter Day Saints in the US. It is the fastest growing christian denomination in the country. You may believe differently, but many people have investigated our religion and found it to be true.

You are free to believe how you wish, all’s we ask is the same privilege.

@BROTHER_ED – These are simple yes or no questions. 1. Did God start out as a man and then become God. 2. Is Joseph Smith spoken of in the Bible? 3. Will all believers eventually become Gods with their own planets and their own people worshiping them? These are simple questions and I am just asking for a yes or no answer. As of yet I haven’t stated an opinion as to any of these questions. I am simply asking if she (and now you) believes these things to be true? If you believe these things to be true simply say so. The second part of the question is if you do affirm these things to be true why do you accept Joseph Smith as a Prophet and not Luther, Calvin, Zwingli or Mohammad? What is it about Joseph Smith that makes you accept him as a Prophet and not others? I am curious more than anything and didn’t anticipate that my questions would upset anyone. I am simply trying to understand why you believe what you believe, if you have complete confidence in your beliefs this would be an opportune time for you to evangelize and share your beliefs rather than accusing me of being “contentious”, getting defensive leads people to believe that you are not confident in your beliefs. If you find my questions unsettling I sincerely apologize, that is not my intent. God Bless

      @SNOOOP1E

We believe we God (Heavenly Father) is the Father of our spirits. Most Christians believe Jesus is our ‘Elder Brother” due to this fact. Satan is also a spirit child of our Heavenly Father, he was cast out due to rebellion. Therefore, Jesus, Satan and we are all brothers, spiritually speaking.

A kitten becomes a cat, a puppy becomes a dog – therefor, we as children of God can become like Him. It is not a guarantee, many are called, but few are chosen. We are told by Jesus that we will inherit all that He has.

After the Apostles died out, the authority that Jesus conferred upon them was lost. This was recognized by Luther, Wesley and others. The authority was restored through Joesph Smith, Jr.

We believe that this authority, the Priesthood, is necessary to preform the saving ordinances required for salvation. (can just anybody baptize you, or does it have to be someone ‘special’?).

We believe that God speaks to the world through His prophets, just as He always has.

This a basic (very basic) answer to your questions – which I believe to be sincere. I would suggest reading the Book of Mormon and praying about it to see if it is true. Heavenly Father will give you an answer. If it is true, then Joseph Smith, Jr was a prophet.

Luther and the others were inspired men, and we have no qualms with any other religion.

      Happy Memorial Day.

Pray for these faith leaders to be strong in their stand, wise in their rebuttal and guided by the Holy Spirit.

God has been in America since the early settlers, lets keep God alive here, whether or not all believe at this time, and pray for their unbelief.

TRUE modern Christian faith has been a help to mankind, let us all continue to help and pray!

I so agree! That is the main purpose for the United States! Religious freedom. Even our founding fathers recognized that there are certain rights that only come from our Creator and no man can take that from us.

It’s about time. I really don’t care about what religious leaders have to say since they should have been dealing with this subject 4 years ago. They dropped the ball then and allowed this communist idiot to be put into place. So I can say I am somewhat relieved but I question their discernment that allowed them to be silent for so long. If they say, like so many today, “I didn’t know what this guy was going to be like”, I say that you should not be in any position of authority in the Church. I knew EXACTLY what he was with a 20 minute Google search.

I’ve never understood this either – their silence, that is. The article said that under the tax code they aren’t allowed to endorse a candidate, but it seems to me that democrats go to churches all the time to campaign. Why are they allowed to endorse a candidate and others not?

@from Virginia, Great question. I’ve wondered about this myself for many years. The black and social justice churches have been heavily involved in politics for years and blatantly so. The Catholic Church has for centuries tried to play both sides and that is where they have come into so much conflict in these separation issues. I feel they have stepped up to the plate on the contraception issue but they whole-hardheartedly supported obamacare in its original form. No discernment! We go back to the definition of insanity. History constantly repeats itself from generation to generation and nobody seems to learn. This is why I am cautiously optimistic but deep down I think that they will roll over for some little treat thrown their way. Remember, obama is the master of divide and conquer. He will cave to one of these guys, they will swoon, and then the camaraderie will be over, each man for himself to fight the communists. They never learn!

Our Consitution of written to be Just beyond that which men are capable. There is nothing wrong with God. It is men. Leave our Commandments, our True churches and laws alone and quit fiddling with things to support leftists who are wanting to overthrow this nation. Grow up and see what is going on. Yes, it is happening. They are using religion as an excuse to take the very hope of mankind away and make them psychologically dependent on the whims of men who are for the most part Godless and cannot and will not make Just decisions. These people need to work with what is right and just and they will not because God intereferes with their plans to enslave people to the point they are without hope. Stand firm and stand with God. At all costs stand for what is right.

What are you high on? Really, you must be smoking some powerful stuff.

“Our Consitution of written to be Just beyond that which men are capable. ” Our Constitution was created by men, by flawed men, who saw their limits and put safe guard in place. the Constitution is not Just beyond that which men are capable, when first written it protected the institution of slavery (oh, wait God is okay with slavery). What is a “True Church” one that you agree with, that tells you your storys with just enough bile and brimstone.

The foundation of our Constitution is written based on the Truth of the Holy Bible. Those writting this Constitution labored over this and prayed over this and made this Constitution above that which man is capable of being. This Constitution will stand, for there are people who will and have died for this. They will continute to stand as long as we get traitors such as are in our White House out of Office and get back to the business of being who we are and were and will always be. We are Americans and we should allow no man to make laws contrary to what is Just and Right in the Eyes of God. This nation is Under God and He says “….let no man put asunder what God hath joined together.” This was not meant solely for marriage. When God makes a statement it is all encompassing.

God never made slavery. Men did. God gave Grace to guide men into doing what is right. They eventually did. Do not blame sin on God, he gives free will and people who have their hearts in the right place will do that which is right.

@ABBYGIRL1994 – It is one thing to doubt someones religion but to say that it is led by Lucifer is venturing into God’s territory. In Matthew 25:22-30 Jesus issued a stark warning about calling that which is of God of Satan and That which is of Satan of God. [22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” 25Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you 29“Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house.30“He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.] Peace be with you….

Obama is going after the catholic church to shut the church down as all communist countries did in the past. He cannot be as blatant about it because we know the history of communist countries needing to remove the catholic church so he is trying to shut the church down through the back door. The new movie coming out “For Greater Glory” is timely by the hand of God. Please see this movie!

No churches would be taxed until they could no longer operate. That is why they are not taxed. Those who are godless enough to try and tax God would be godless enough to supress religious freedoms within a church. The government needs to stay out of religion and quit trying to use religion as an excuse to take what our Constitutional Law is based upon, the Bibical Truths and cast it to the wind. Sounds like someone has been dummed down and cannot see the whole picture who would want religions taxed. These people are godless. If the car is running, leave the hood down.

We are Americans, churches help the poor, quake victims, war victims, many times they are on the ground, before the government. The LDS church had a 73 hr response time here and overseas and they have NO paid clergy. Churches get there before the governments that wants to control and say you cant help him with out a permit. That’s why they are tax exempt…Gezzzz.

The value of the churches is all in their land and churches (some churches like Saint Peter’s Basilica are virutally priceless museums – how do you tax something that’s priceless). Why would you want churches taxed so that the government can get even bigger, more intrusive, and create more dependency?

You are right. Because Christians are not afraid to die for what they believe in. These traitors did not factor God into the equation and they will lose. They believe in nothing but vile and outrageous things that are contrary to God. They have no power except what God allows to accomplish what He deems fit to accomplish. All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord. They have already lost.
