SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. (The Blaze/AP) – A Tempe man is hospitalized in extremely critical condition after his motorcycle ran into a light pole at nearly 160 mph in the central Arizona town of San Tan Valley.
Pinal County authorities say 19-year-old Noe Calazo was airlifted to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center after the crash early Sunday.
The motorcyclist sped past a county sheriff’s deputy at 2:05 a.m. on a road where the posted speed limit is 45 mph. The deputy‘s radar gun clocked Calazo’s motorcycle at 157 mph.
Before a pursuit could begin, authorities say Calazo had crashed four miles away, hitting the concrete base of a traffic light pole.
“The motorcycle was nearly disintegrated on impact and Calazo flew an additional 104 feet through the air before striking the ground,” Tim Gaffney of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Deputies say Calazo was driving on a revoked license. If he survives, authorities say he’ll be facing charges of aggravated DUI, reckless driving and criminal speed.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 4:39pm160 MPH? Good God Almighty. Can’t imagine how your brain could process what your eyes are seeing at that speed. Obviously, not too well. Saw two dead motorcycle riders two years ago while on vacation in southern California covered with tarps. It was a sad sight; this had to have been much worse. I hope he makes it, but it doesn’t sound likely.

Oh, and might I also remind the audience here that over half of motorcycle accidents are caused by CAGERS who don’t pay attention to their driving!
As for the kid, I suppose that every one here with a smart ass comment would have felt better if the kid had been driving a car at that speed, ran into another vehicle or two, and upped the death toll by a factor of five or so? The vehicle here is irrelevant. We have a kid who has no experience behind the wheel, only knows how to go fast, and is lucky to still be alive (so far). I hope he recovers, learns from his stupidity, and lives a normal life from this point on….May that be God’s Christmas present to his family!

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 7:24pmYes, and they don’t have to be going very fast to sound like that..It‘s a matter of the exhaust system and what rpm they’re at, not so much the speed. My Harley has a pretty nice after market exhaust, and I love the sound of it as I’m accelerating up to highway speed. Posted on December 22, 2010 at 4:58pmWhile 19 year old people should indeed know better. Sometimes freedom of choice gives them the chance to make fatal or life changing errors. With a deplorable choice such as this, he may not be the only person to suffer. If he has a loving family, they will suffer. If he has friends, they will suffer. If he survives, this was a choice not to be undone. If he does not survive, it may be a small blessing no one else was killed. My prayers for strength and comfort to those who love him. And knowledge borne of grief to his young friends, that they may not made similar horrible choices.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 6:23pmWisdom, that is the prime word here.
My father was never without at least one motorcycle since his first Indian before WW2. He rode bikes ever since, racking up probably a million miles. Riding was his first love, and he was never in an accident, never laid his bike down in in his 70 years of riding.
How did he survive? He had wisdom, he was careful, he watched his surroundings, he did not speed. He was wise.
The stupid are not like that.

The average 19-year-old on something that powerful is a recipe for disaster. I‘ll bet this was the kid’s first bike. Any novice rider that starts out on one capable of that speed is asking for it.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 6:44pmRandy, Avenger, you two ever drive over the speed limit? If so, at what point would you consider it to be wrong? Are there “degrees” of “idiot”? You know, like 5 MPH over being a plain idiot, 10 MPH being a true idiot, 15 mph being a stupid idiot, 20 MPH being a total idiot, etc? Speed causes accidents. The more one or more cars deviate from the speed limit, the more chance of an accident. This young man is very fortunate that he did not hurt anyone else. I’m sure he felt he had things under control, but as momma always says “the proof is in the pudding.” Ever had an accident (surprised they never call them an “on purpose” because in almost every accident, someone’s mistake caused it). So, come on, cut this guy some slack.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 5:02pmBelieve me at 157 mph the helmet will only contain the goo that used to be the head. It really won’t help at all. If the fool is still alive it is only because he was lucky, but then again, if he is anywhere as badly smashed up as he should be, being alive is probably unlucky.
Report Post »Just so you will know, if you drop your helmet onto a hard surface, say it slips out of your hand, you are supposed to disard the helmet. That little amount of impact will fracture it and cause it to fail totally when you need it.
C. Schwehr
Posted on December 22, 2010 at 7:21pmA helmet will only protect against a glancing hit, not a full on impact. So it‘s assumed that he didn’t smack his head too badly, and most of his injuries are broken bones, dislocations, and internal from the tumble he took when he landed….I’ve seen racers survive on-track accidents at higher speeds (one at 180mph + during the Isle of Mann TT races of several years ago…a well known example) and if the kid was drinking, that actually may have helped save his life…strange as that may sound. You actually get hurt worse if you tense up and try to brace yourself as opposed to being relaxed (as in being stupid drunk).

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 10:42pmThis is where I live–same town, it was just split up as another town less than a year ago. WHAT AN IDIOT!!! You’d be amazed at how much of this goes on here. Check out the wrecks in the Phoenix metro area every morning. (Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Phoenix) It has gone down some since the speed cameras came down, but driving into work every morning, there is no doubt that a large percentage of these people are either still drunk, just got drunk, have no business driving, or have no sense of mortality.

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 10:50pmwell , yes, Kate… we deserved to die… I always gave a pretty good percentage to death vs. emergency room survival… since I’m still typing , and … YES… IT WAS F_IN’ STUPID… , but I always knew the percentage of the daisies poking up from my chest…he lost .. “OR” ….I hope he loses on the odds….pppffftttt… who cares… he only could kill himself in this situation….who cares….
….next situation… I HOPE HE IS DEAD !!!

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 11:03pmSad. But he did bring this upon himself.
On the other hand, the disintegration of the motorcycle at that high speed supports what happened to the airplane that crashed into the pentagon on 911.

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 1:17pm@ neversaynever… SPOT ON! The guy’s a moron. No prayers from us. Thanks be to God that no one else was injured. The kids was driving on a suspended license, INTOXICATED. Gene pool didn’t need him. Bye. If I’d have done that at 19, 22 years ago, and eventually healed up, I’d have been disowned by my family, and rightfully so.
