Motorcyclist Tries to Hit-and-Run, But Is Chased Down by Victim — and Bumper-Cam Allows You to See It All!

Generally, hit-and-run incidents involve filing a detailed description of the offending vehicle in a report to the authorities and hoping the will be caught. In this case, though, a motorcyclist picked the wrong person to clip and then try to speed away from. They were not only chased down, but the whole incident was also caught on a camera mounted on the bumper.
According to the video’s description on YouTube, a man on a “crotch rocket” was passing the driver of a 2006 Subaru WRX Limited going at least 80 miles per hour. In the process though, the motorcyclist clipped car’s the front bumper.
“Then they try to take off and out run me. After realizing that I was keeping up they finally gave up,“ the poster of the YouTube video with the name ”findurpath” wrote.

Footage shows the clip, honk of a horn and the motorcyclist trying to speed away. (Image: YouTube screenshot)

The motorcyclist even looks back at one point to see if the vehicle is still on the chase. (Image: YouTube screenshot)

Eventually, the motorcyclist pulled over. (Image: YouTube screenshot)
Watch the nearly three minutes showing the hit-and-run, chase and confrontation (Warning: Strong language):
“findurpath,” or James, contacted the blog Jalopnik with his story and even provided them with more information. James described the conversation he had with the offending biker as “alarming and surprisingly calm.” The man who clipped James said, “Dude, I so did not mean to do that.” Here’s more from what James told Jalopnik:
I tore him a new one though and he was shaking and completely freaked out that he had his life flash before his eyes and that a car was able to keep up with him.
Kept saying how cool the car was etc etc, but was apologizing the whole time.
He denied at first that he was trying to run away and that he was just trying to catch up with some friends further up the road. But after I told him that I had the whole thing on video, he knew he was caught.
James said his car didn’t suffer too much damage and that a report of the incident was filed with highway patrol.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 11:04pm@the sargeant major: Before you rank on Subarus too much, realize that the WRX model won six World Rally Championships against high-performance vehicles from Toyota, Ford, Nissan, and several other manufacturers. The street models are de-tuned (down to about 240 HP) from the WRC setup, but still VERY fast, rugged, and handle like they’re running on tracks. Running one at 100+ is possible, but I don’t recommend it on everyday roads. The car could deal with it, but your wallet probably won’t be able to do so. That could mean a VERY expensive ticket, and depending on the jurisdiction, a trip to impound for the car, and jail for the driver. Not my favorite way to use a vehicle. And motorcyclists who drive like that DO have a tendency to remove themselves from the gene pool. How many have you seen in the Darwin Awards?

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 6:06pm@ANEWME Unless your Subaru’s are highly modified, there is not a chance in the world that you are passing sport bikes. The WRX in the video most has a turbo because you can hear the wastegates.

Yeah, all WRX‘s have turbo’s. Even moderately modified WRX’s can spank your average “sport bike” with an average rider regularly.
Report Post »Reavin
Posted on June 28, 2012 at 2:20amEye,
Define “moderately modified.” Can’t exactly tell what bike this is from the video and angles, but even a 600 completely stock should have given the suby fits. The bike rider simply didn’t know how to ride… as evidenced by the fact he hardly had any lean on his turns.
Bpd, You’re not hearing the wastegate, you’re hearing the blow-off valve.
Anew, maybe some bikes, but unless you’re extremely modified I doubt it would keep up with a strong 600 and even more doubtful it would keep up with a liter bike. Even an STI only runs a 13 second quarter (decently fast for a street car, slow for a sport bike) and while it‘s briskly fast with it’s touted 158 rated top speed, that’s not that fast when compared to a liter bike. Even 600‘s can hit 150’ish.
While I respect suby’s as much as the next guy (having been an import lover most of my life – have built everything from evo’s, dsm’s, and even had my old 280z built up) you guys need to be a little more realistic. The ONLY reason that bike didn’t pull away into nothingness is because he was afraid to ride the damned thing.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 2:37amCouldn’t agree with you more, CHIEFGEORGE! AS a longtime motor-cyclist and having many friends who, also, ride sports (racing bikes with headlights) and touring bikes (Goldwings and Harleys) – have unfortunately had to visit some in hospital after altercations with clowns in cars. Years agon, upon visitng a motor-cycle friend who had an unfortunate meeting with a moving car driven by a clown, The nurses hand the wire scrubbing brush to the patient to clean their own gravel-rash wounds – too painful for the nurses to do! One’s advice to motor-cylists is enjoy the ride, be sensible and don’t go over your limits/experience, especially on new roads yet experienced, wear leathers/kevlar (copes better than skin meeting road), and WATCH OUT FOR THE CLOWNS! As an alternative, one would ride with a pair of wiresnips/pincers kept handy near the steering arms which would occasionally be used to clip the tyre valve of one of the wheels on a ‘clown’s’ car when stopped at the lights. Clowns can’t chase you with a flat tyre! Happy riding!

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 1:20pmThis story is complete BS! First of all, the guy driving the probably modified WRX Limited (which is a “crotch rocket” car) is one of these aggressive driving jerks, who when he saw the motorcycle going around to pass, punched it to close the gap. That right there is aggressive and dangerous driving, especially when you know that all cars are weapons to motorcyclists. He could have easily killed the motorcyclist. This was open road country and you let people pass. He could have picked a spot and passed the guy back, who probably would have given him plenty of road. Then he comes up to the motorcyclist and tells him to get on his knees. There is enough in this video to arrest the WRX driver, and the motorcyclist should sue him. Also, may I suggest to him that from now on he carry and pistol on his bike, and know how to use it.

I‘ve driven in South Dakota during Sturgis and I’ve driven in Miami during rush hour. Motorcyclists what do not respect the rules of the road – like not passing in no pass zones, and driving at high speeds between lanes – will eventually be hit by an innocent driver and probably die.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 6:50pmI’m sorry Turbo, but you are severely mistaken, unless you’re saying it takes 12 seconds for the bike to pass. I can pass a car in my v8 Tundra in about two seconds. I understand your point though. The driver of the car did indeed accelerate prior to the pass, however, the pass did not occur until about 12 seconds into his acceleration. Here’s where you are wrong. If you listen close enough, you can hear the car decelerate immediately before he gets clipped which leads me to believe the driver of the car did follow common procedures of getting passed. If he was as much of an aggressive driver as you claim, why did he give the biker as much room as he did while chasing him? The WRX (which sounded pretty freakin sweet btw) clearly had enough engine to catch up to the timid biker, yet he gave him several hundred yards.
I submit that the driver of the car was simply following the bike in front of him, who also accelerated through that portion of road, while the biker, became the aggressor in passing a vehicle that is already going too fast for public streets.

Do they understand that the meaning behind the fish, or ICTHUS, symbol has more to do with faith in Jesus than creationism? As a Catholic, I believe in intelligent design, and it is your right and privilege to believe whatever you like; I just think it a bit offensive to mock Christians and their beliefs by turning a symbol of Jesus into a political statement. Can‘t you use something else that expresses your belief without mocking someone else’s?

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 3:56pmDear Smoovious,
Report Post »Even though you a different person than the one I questioned, since you replied, I’ll speak to you… in the Christian faith the fish symbol was created for two different reasons- the first being that, during times of persecution (Roman, mainly), one could walk up to someone in a public place and engage in a conversation and make the “(” mark on the dirt with a foot. If the other person was also a Christian, they could ‘reply’ with another “(” mark, and it would make a drawing of a fish, which in Greek is spelled “ICHTHUS”. “ICHTHUS” is also an acrostic for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior”. So, this symbol is generally considered very sacred by Christians, especially Catholics and Orthodox. I realize that it is not up to anyone to be responsible for my offense; however, if we are to live together in this world in peace and harmony, why would anyone go out of their way to blatantly mock billions of people’s faith? It comes down to common courtesy, doesn’t it? And, if we want this world to be a better place, doesn’t it begin within ourselves and how we express our beliefs to each other?
justgonnastay
Posted on June 27, 2012 at 4:35pmA symbol is just a symbol. It’s agreed upon only by consent. It’s otherwise meaningless.
The little Darwin fish with legs is simply a humorous play on the bumper fish, portraying an aquatic creature “evolving” legs to walk on land. It’s more a poke at creationism than at Christianity in general. You can be a Christian and also not ignore the overwhelming evidence of an evolutionary process taking place on our planet.
Report Post »Sugabee
Posted on June 27, 2012 at 4:54pmSo, what you’re saying is that because you (or an atheist) do not consider the Ichthus symbol to be sacred, then it’s not sacred at all?? That makes no sense whatsoever. So, by your logic, going to India and slaughtering a cow in the middle of the streets of Delhi should be no big deal to any of the residents there who consider the cow sacred. How do you think that would play out? If something is considered sacred, shouldn’t EVERYONE be respectful of that symbol? What’s wrong with behaving in a respectful manner to everyone you meet? And, the fish symbol is not a symbol of Creationism- it’s a symbol of Christianity – so you’re poking “fun” at someone’s religion, not Creationism. Yes, you certainly can be Christian and believe in the theory of evolution; I’m not disputing that. What I‘m disputing is the mocking of a religion to express one’s own beliefs. Doesn’t seem very tolerant.

A friend & I (I was on the back of the Harley) did “cruise” this road but did take precautions. “Clipping” someone reminds me of the story of a “phantom car” that clipped the limo Princess Di was a passenger in (of course the limo driver was drunk) and it did not end well. Posted on June 27, 2012 at 10:49amI agree. Looks like they both were passing on double yellow as well as speeding. Chasing someone down in Colorado is deemed harassment and road rage. Certainly reckless behavior by both. Trying to flee was stupid choice. If I was sitting on the jury deciding punishment or civil penalty on the driver after the biker had crashed as a result of being chased I would see the big difference is the biker did not mean to hit the car and fled but the driver chose to give chase. Obviously the rider is some type of moron for riding in jeans and sneakers and was obviously unskilled. He’s very lucky he did not crash from clipping the car in the first place. As far as the driver is concerned I don’t think perusing this kid was wise simply because it could have caused a fatal accident. Is a scratch on your car (ego?) worth another person’s life or limb? Also you may have walked right into an ass whoopin’. The guys I ride with would have been right there with your buddy in the station wagon that pulled up after the stop. Any rider with any skill would have smoked your Subaru any way. Glad no one was hurt. Next time call the HP or local cops and let them handle it.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 11:09amSo the guy should have pulled over, let the motorcycle speed away and then call the cops… who would never catch the guy who did it. Nice plan. Just because you’re not coordinated enough to follow someone who hit and ran, doesn’t mean every one else is just as scared and uncoordinated as you.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 11:16amYou have to stand up to ******** like this bike rider.
He’d have fled the scene and probably done the same thing later – seeing that he could get away with it.
I applaud the driver that chased him down. It’s time we took back our streets and lives form inconsiderate ******** and thugs,

There is an element of recklessness with a high speed pursuit of someone whether your LE or a civilian. That said I am with thenizzutz.
The only thing that would change my mind is if a car mounted cam captured enough information to lead to a conviction.
