Motorist Captures Drag-Racing Corvettes Crashing on Thanksgiving: ‘Knew That Was Coming’

On Thursday, we paused to give thanks. Many of us probably offered up a prayer for our family, friends, and good food to eat. The guys in this video might have offered one up that had something to do with being alive. That’s because an observant Texas motorist noticed that, while stopped at a red light, there were two nearly identical Corvettes waiting to race. He turned on his camera in anticipation of something bad happening. As you’re about to see, he was right

Here’s what the motorist pulled up to:

Corvettes Crash on Thanksgiving in Texas

The “race” started off well, with some screeching tires:

Corvettes Crash on Thanksgiving in Texas

It quickly went south when the driver on the right lost control:

Corvettes Crash on Thanksgiving in Texas

And predictably, this is how it ended:

Corvettes Crash on Thanksgiving in Texas

You can watch it all unfold below [content warning for some language]:

The auto site Jalopnik reports that police have now issued arrest warrants for the the two drivers, after they were allegedly let off the hook when the accident first happened. It cites the forum LS1GTO and someone on there who claims to be a responding officer:

We got a ton of information from this individual, all of which sounds credible enough (we‘ve reached out to the Sheriff’s office for confirmation). Here’s the good stuff:

They both tried to tell me they weren’t racing. The C5 claimed to be pushing 600rwhp… He claimed he dumped the clutch and thats why he lost control. Lol.

[...]

Well, the driver on the left was 23 and called his parents immediately. As soon as we placed him in cuffs his mom started screaming to go to the hospital. So we sent him to the hospital and decided to cut the other guy loose due to the kid not going to jail. Warrants are being issued for both of their arrests now.

[...]

We recieved [sic] a 911 call (from a witness) saying that a major accident just accused and the other corvette was attempting to leave the scene. And the other vette wasn’t drivable. Due to it being a major accident, we have to investigate.

So there’s probable turkey number one, being bailed out by his mom. Despite being completely irresponsible and likely getting arrested, I just have this bad feeling (from experience) he may get his C5 back.

By the way, if you’re like me, you’ve probably watched the video a couple times and think the best line is the bystander noting, “Let’s see how stupid these guys are.”

Prophetic.

The National Safety Council’s argument for mandating seat-belts is that 54% of traffic fatalities were NOT wearing their seat-belt.
      Therefor !!!!!!!!!……………………..
46% of FATALITIES ARE WEARING their seat-belts.
Sounds damn near 50%-50% to me.

      @ProbIemSoIver

this is simple. stats dont account for common sense. if your in the front seat your seatbelt can save your life. if your in the back seat seatbelts are less likely to make a difference. if you drive a 10,000 lb truck in most states you are not required to wear a seatbelt, since most objects you hit will crumble.

but, when you start looking at the majority of accidents you’ll see that of the accidents without seatbelts that result in fatality, death is preventable 21 out of every 22 times. if you pick and choose the type of statistics you look at you can get the numbers in your favor everytime. the trick is to look at every set of statistics in the entire category before coming to an uneducated decision.

So what is your point? if you want to wear a seatbelt that is all fine and dandy, but are you honestly going to say that you give a damn if someone you don’t know gets killed in a car wreck if he is not wearing a seatbelt? It is really none of your business whether I choose to wear a seatbelt and it sure as hell isn’t the governments business whether I do or not. Try as you might you will not in any way be able to regulate death, everyone is going to die sometime, regardless of government regulation.

PROBlEMSOlVER…….just curious here, not being judgemental.
WOW! You‘re really hostile about ’the belt’! Are you more upset that it is a law to wear it or do you really believe you are no more safe with it on?

Have you ever read accident reports where someone is thrown out of the car then crushed as it rools onto them? Do you realize that some people survive fairly bad crashes with minor, or even no injuries?
I get the thing about government intrusion with regards to ‘them’ telling ‘us’ what to do, and generally have the same sentiments.
I ride motorcycles, and I wear a helmet. In NJ, its a law. In some states, motorcycle groups have repealed those laws. Usually, in those states, you’ll see riders with no helmet, except for the more mature ones. Can you imagine going down to the pavement and slamming your head hard enough to incur brain damage when, if wearing a helmet, it’d be just a bell-ringer? Ask actor Gary Busey about that one.

Anyway, even if 54/46 are the correct stats, it seems those figures were for fatalities. Belts may not have been able to change anything, regardless. Some ‘accidents’ are that violent, you know. I wonder how many more, though, would have been fatal accidents if no belt was snapped?

That is the missing piece to the stats you give, and is the point.

However if there were no seat belt laws then this kid surely would not have been wearing one and this country would no longer be facing the risk of him growing up to actually raise children and vote

my stats are not tampered with. thats why i used a state investigation by the state police force and not a national set of stats composed by a biased organization. thank you for making yourself look freakin crazy though. seems you take this stuff so serious it might cause an stroke.

thank goodness we have you and your stats that only show a comparison of how the vast majority wear seatbelts today. when you talley up how many fatal crashes are while wearing a seatbelt it looks even. as i said earlier, your stats leave out preventability. not wearing your seatbelt in crashes results in death in which over 90% of deaths are preventable by wearing one.

you cannot pick and choose your stats like liberals and the president does to prove your point and leave out any stats that disprove your point.

now your only argument is that my stats are somehow biased. they were easily conducted by responders to the fatal crashes first hand. no one said lets put liberals in the state police’s first responders units so we can better turn the stats in our favor. try not showing stats that only show a biased portion. that is as bad as the stats themselves being biased. the vast majority of people today wear seatbelts, therefore more accidents occur with seatbelts. therefore there SHOULD be more deaths among seatbelt wearers than non wearers. but there are not, which in turn proves that your stats show seatbelt wearing is the way to go.

and i never said that you should be forced to wear a seatbelt. where did i say that? i didnt. i just say that if you present a case that is flawed and shows the stats you want to use, you might want to rethink which party you work for. that is the work of liberals in my neck of the woods. i drive a box truck that weighs 5 tons and i am not required by the state to wear a seatbelt. that is great because with my work sometimes the seatbelt gets in the way of productivity. i still wear my seatbelt on long runs and when i am on a fast moving road. and i wear it when i am not required to.

i know a guy who refuses to wear a seatbelt because a guy he knew died in an accident and he simply heard a rumor that the seatbelt literally killed the guy. i said maybe so, but that doesnt negate the fact that the seatbelt will save you much more than it would kill you. btw, the guy who told me this raced cars for a living, and he still had no grasp of seatbelts being important. stick with the facts and you will be fine. i would rather play the odds. if i play blackjack, i dont hit on an 18. its a good way to lose.

First, it’s an 8% increase in chances. 54-46=8.

      Secondly,
Fatalities stats are exactly that. It doesn’t include accidents not severe enough to cause fatalities, nor does it include stats on the number of lives saved in accidents severe enough to cause a fatality, but were non-fatal due to the wearing of the seat beat.

Looking just at the 54/46% stat:
At least 46% of accidents were so severe that the seat belt didn’t matter.
Of the 54% of fatalities involving no seat belts being wore, 21 out of 22 were preventable, or 95% were preventable. Therefore, 51.3% of the total fatalities were preventable. That is a lot of lives.

I will stick with my motorcycle, thanks. No matter how much you mod out a Vette, the power to weight ratio makes it impossible to take a street bike in a race. While I agree that there is no replacement for displacement, let’s look at the facts. a 350-450 pound bike with a 130 BHP engine versus a 3208 pound plus Vette with 750 BHP, which after power is lost through the drive line and parasitic drag. Power is cut by roughly 20%-25%. 187.5 of the BHP is lost through the drive line. 562.5 HP is the final number. Take that, divide it by the weight and you get 0.175. Now take the bike with a drive chain loss of roughly 10%. That is a 13 HP loss which makes the bike 117 HP. Do the math and you come up with 0.29

Corvette average power to weight ratio = 0.175
Motorcycle average power to weight ratio = 0.29

This is why I will stick to the Motorcycle. :-)

GM are great cars. No matter who holds stock in the company. Corvettes are outstanding if you know how to use them. This twit kid thought he was playing a video game where you win by punching it. Corvettes put a lot of power to the ground with no weight on top. If you finesse the throttle as you let out the clutch you get less slip, more acceleration, and less smashing into the guy next to you. It is an $80k car not a playstation game

However, before we all go knee jerking and demanding their heads on a platter, keep in mind that if young men didn’t have the urge to do these kinds of things and the bravado to follow through, 99.999% of the discoveries, inventions and explorations of history would never have happened. Yes, put these lads in front of a judge and teach them resepect for the laws of the road, but don’t get bent out of shape that young men still do these kinds of things, thank God above that they do (and stay out of their way, as most of the time they end up failing).

Probably most of us have indulged in some illegal “roadway recreation” at one point or another. I own a fast sportbike and on occasion have ridden very fast or had fun cornering on a twisty road. Most of the times I have done this has been on lightly traveled roads in remote areas. The thing those guys have to understand is just what they are risking. They were racing in a residential area which is a definite public hazard. If they had killed one of those cyclists they very well may have gone to jail for a very long time. I hope the accident and some traffic fines will make them think about how they drive.

I agree Doug, my intent was not to minimize how bone headed this. Just wanted to point out that young men acting rashly is what we owe pretty much all of the good things in our civilization to, that’s all. But with the good, is the bad, no doubt.

They are such idiots, they are probobly loving the publicity! … not even concerned about the consequences of their actions.. mommy and daddy will pay for the damages and take care of everything. No consequences really.. just celebrity for them. That is what is wrong with the way kids have been raised for so long.

they fishtailed because of the driver. I used to sell used corvettes in my younger years and learned the first day the power that they have. These children, mind you I was 19 when selling these beauties, have no concept of control. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the corvette prior to OBAMA.

Is racing off the line really illegal, I‘d figure as long as you didn’t go over the speed limit, or cause a wreck you were ok. The moron who caused the wreck should have to pay for everything.

I know cops and towns say it is, cause they make a lot of money with ********* tickets, that doesn’t make it right. The speed limit is the speed limit, until you get to it, there should be no limit on how fast you can accelerate, if there is, they should have acceleration limits posted.

Anyone who says racing is illegal is a moron. People have raced for sport or leisure since humanity first began thousands of years ago. The only reason that you all make it illegal in cars is because of a perceived threat to your safety. In actuality racing is as much a part of human nature as barking is in chiahuahua nature. The issue of safety could be made irrelevant if roads were made safer by putting in medians and ensuring long lines of sight with clear road edges. Then the average “racer” wou’d be able to see the guy pulling out 100 feet up. Personally I don‘t speed in areas with low visibility because I’m afraid to kill people. However!, live in Oklahoma, the land of flat and speed everyday without fail and without endangering anyone’s life.

The problem here was with a single driver who couldn‘t even handle his car’s rear end fishtailing a little bit and he over corrected and wrecked. The entire incident is his fault because the other driver WAS in control of his car. My favorite part about this video is the brainwashed idiot taking the video whilst smacking gum loudly. Since when do grown men smack gum like teenage girls? Someone needs to take a corner off his man card for the gum and another for complaining about a couple of guys “racing”.

BTW, that wasn’t even a real race. It isn’t a race until you break the 1/4 mile mark or 100mph. They appeared to reach about 50mph and weren’t close to a quarter mile.
