Move Over Watson: There‘s a New ’Sensing’ Robot in Town

Remember meeting Watson — the first non-human contestant on Jeopardy? Watson, with the help of voice recognition, can process questions and deliver correct answers in the blink of an eye. What Watson doesn’t have, however, is a sense of touch.  In their quest to shape and perfect artificial intelligence, scientists at Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have reportedly developed a breakthrough component, that, when applied to a robot’s frame, will serve as a sensitive skin that can feel heat and touch.

Small hexagonal plates fashioned in a honeycomb pattern comprise the “skin.” So far only one small piece of skin with 15 individual sensors was completed and then applied to a long robotic arm. The arm reportedly reacts to the slightest sense of air or touch.

Daily Mail provides the details:

The centerpiece of the new robotic shell – called the Bioloid Robot – is a 5 sq cm hexagonal plate or circuit board.

Each small circuit board contains four infrared sensors that detect anything closer than 1cm.

Mittendorfer said: ‘We thus simulate light touch. This corresponds to our sense of the fine hairs on our skin being gently stroked.’

The robot is equipped with six temperature sensors and an accelerometer. This allows the machine to accurately register the movement of individual limbs and to therefore learn what body parts it has just moved.

For the machine to have detection ability, the signals from the sensors must be processed by a central computer.

We can only guess the next stop for Watson and the “bioloid” will be the development of human emotions…

I just want news – I do not want to pick thru crap articles like this, I have other
sites to visit. SUGGEST: seperate these FLUFF stories from the political News.

Also,, get rid of that stupid slideout thing that blocks part of the stories – not useful & just an irritant.

How about an updeate on the SEIU/AFSCME economic terror plot, or something on what the Obama’s ATF is doing to further restrict 2nd Ammendment rights absent legislation, or how about something on George Soros plan to institute “merit basede” judicial selection processes which is being proposed currently in WI in a BI-PARTISAN Bill as a result of the state supreme court hyginx here. That’s right. We currently elect our justices to 10 year terms in WI, so the people actually have a voice in the court. Now we have a Republican senator co-sponsoring a bill to make merit-based appointments to the supreme court – an initiative started by Spooky Dude himself – and he’s probably none-the-wiser that he‘s playing right into Soros’ hand. But, no. By all means, keep us up to date on all the trivial %#@!.

If the news on this website is not up to your glorious standards then maybe you should look somewhere else. I don‘t read every story on The Blaze or Drudge or any website because a lot of it can be just a bunch of puff pieces that don’t interest me but you seem to forget what one of the mottos on Glenn Beck’s radio show is, it is the infusion of ENTERTAINMENT and enlightenment.

If it‘s not up to par with you then skip over what you don’t like but don’t expect the universe to revolve around your ego. In other words just deal with it and move on. Except the things you cannot change. You show your character when you complain like this, not just once but a few times. You seem quite like the liberals who want to sensor what they don’t approve of and expect everyone to post only what they deem as expectable. Don‘t read what doesn’t suit you. And then to waste your time complaining… pathetic.

I don’t see you putting up a rival news website but you do seem to think this website should run the stories that you want to see. If you don‘t find what your looking for then go and find it somewhere else but don’t show up here or anywhere and expect them to have all the information to hand to you.

Wow, way to break major news, blaze. Just another in a long line of “distraction” stories. We don’t come to this site to be entertained, we come here to be informed. Every day we lose more of our liberties as tyranny creeps in ever closer, and this is what you give us? Touchy robots and LeBron dunking over a kid. Is that the best you can do, or is this destined to become HuffPo Part Deux?
