MoveOn Casting Notice Calls for ‘Non-Union’ Actors

A casting notice posted online for an upcoming MoveOn.org ad calls for “non-union” actors — a perhaps curious stipulation given the organization’s progressive political leanings.
The notice, posted late Friday afternoon on nycastings.com, is for a public service announcement titled “Oath.” The posting was scheduled to end Sunday.

It calls for actors to fill a dozen different roles, including an “Asian businessman,“ ”Caucasian single mother,“ ”Indian nurse“ and a ”Mitt Romney body double.”

The “non-union” requirement certainly seems at odds with MoveOn’s pro-union postings, particularly this one.
It’s possible MoveOn.org did not directly make the stipulation itself; an organization representative did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment Saturday.
Update: Nick Berning, MoveOn.org’s communications director, wrote in an email to TheBlaze Saturday night:
“MoveOn’s policy is to use union talent, and that has not changed. This listing was a mistake by a production company and the listings are being corrected.”
Update II: The “non-union” descriptor was still there as of midday Sunday.

Posted on August 4, 2012 at 1:50pmThe reason MoveOn.org is calling for non-union actors is because they don’t want to pay SAG-AFTRA scale wages, which, by the way is about double the fee they are offering to pay. The day rate for a background performer on a SAG-AFTRA (union) project is $323 for 8 hours and any hours worked overtime are calculated at time and a half. The rate is bumped up a bit for body doubles, not sure on the exact rate, but I believe it’s somewhere between the background rate above and the principal performer rate of $597.50. I don’t know who the production company is for MoveOn.org, but it sure seems that whomever is calling the shots over there doesn’t want to pay their fair share. mmm-mm-mmm…one more heaping helping of hypocrisy…gotta love it!!!
Btw, I know the above to be true regarding SAG-AFTRA rules because I play by them.

The requirements of the companies using the union actors is ridiculous. The costs are very high. Actors end up making a lot, but it makes it very hard to get a foot in the door and there are less jobs available.

Posted on August 4, 2012 at 1:04pmWhen the Lord of the Rings was being made in NZ, an actor‘s union rep came over from the USA to try and get the many extras to join Actor’s Equity. She was suggesting that they were being ripped off by US standards and could get them a significant pay increase.
They listened politely and she went home empty-handed. I heard that one guy said they were having so much fun that they would happily work for sandwiches.

Most of those actors need to obtain some skills for they will tighten their circles and weed out anyone who has any decency in them. It is time to get off the Hollywood band wagon. Who needs them? We have computers to play with and other electronics. Hollywood is like a great dying beast thrashing around. I am tired of watching grown showoffs who mentally are just like a bunch of rude children yelling “look at me! look at me!. Think about that. Grown people play acting for a living, and getting paid to show off, making like they are so special, demanding huge salaries, when they are not much fit for anything else, but to sit around and denigrate the country that has given them a good living, and helping those who are out to destroy the American way of life. I say they should be ignored for they are of no use to anyone much.
