‘Mr. Satire’: O‘Reilly Warns of Jon Stewart’s Out-of-Context Comedy

Out-of-context editing has consequences, as evidenced by Comedy Central host Jon Stewart‘s selective editing of some of Fox News host Bill O’Reilly’s past comments.

“Let the buyer beware,” O’Reilly warned Wednesday, “about the blending of humor with serious issues.”

    WhiteTeaParty, I

I love the Palin haters that bash her on issues they do not understand. Fact is she was right about Sputnik. What she was referring to was the fact that when government runs/funds innovation not only does it dramatically slow progress, the costs are astronomical. The point about the collapse of the USSR, was, if you know and understand history, Sputnik was so wasteful and expensive that it started the financial collapse which in turn led to the fall of the USSR. The Cold War was certainly a factor, but not the sole cause. It takes more than one factor to collapse a nation, like housing, energy, manufacturing…… You know all the thing the lefts is working overtime to destroy in America using the Saul Alinsky, and Coward (Clowerd) and Piven approach.

You see my uninformed leftist friend, there are a lot more things to consider, learn, and understand in politics than what the socialist media is telling those unwilling or incapable of doing their own research. Like the USA is doing now, they fell for the notion that the government could create and innovate which has historically been proven impossible due to fraud,
red tape, “political bargaining”, ……. I know it’s had to grasp that a bubble gum and lolli pop world is not possible, but it’s true. The “social justice” you are seeking will in fact lead to oppression, and likely mass genocide as in every socialist attempt in history has.

      Dave.
Any system can lead to oppression when allowed to. We opressed the Indians and blacks for years, yet I’m not aware of any people oppressed by countries like Denmark for instance. It is my experience that sweeping statements with modifiers like “always” are best avoided.
If your research proves otherwise, please let me know.

That reminds me. Doesn’t the Communist Party USA support President Obama? Yep, it’s even on their web site. cpusa.org

Isn’t it funny, the Communist Party USA can support President Obama, but conservatives can’t even call him a socialist?

Stewart is a vulture picking at America’s carcass and his viewers are the flies that feed on his droppings. Just look what passes for “debunking” in their world:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JnDY2Gv5YQ

Can you imagine if this was how Glenn or Bill worked? Simple mockery? It‘s child’s play, yet look at how proud they are of it. Read the comments. I’ve actually been linked to this video several times, as “proof” Glenn is a liar. Can you believe that?

I decided to start taking on every comment left on the video. I made almost 2 dozen comments to various people, complete with sources, pointing out misinterpretation, misrepresentation, and blatant lies. Rarely did I leave opinion… the vast majority was fact. Then I called it a night with this one:

“I‘m going to continue to address every one of Stewart’s lies, and every single comment here. I want everyone commenting on this video to attack me. Feel free to gang up on me.”

So that’s one guy vs 500+ people, over a dozen of whom were already spoken to… needless to say, I was expecting a lot of responses. But when I returned the next day, I saw that almost all of my comments were deleted. When I tried to make a comment, I saw this:

“YOU HAVE BEEN BLOCKED BY THE OWNER OF THIS VIDEO”

So it looks like even 500-on-1 is still too much for liberals to deal with. ONE person started systematically taking their comments apart and correcting them, and the uploader couldn’t handle it. The only defense was censorship and denial. No response… no debate… just deleting & blocking.

How can these people live with themselves? It’s pathetic. It’s one thing to be ignorant, but to be willfully ignorant? I can’t imagine violently resisting reality like that. What’s wrong with their brains? Don’t they have any self respect? They don’t like Glenn Beck (in many cases over false pretenses if you read the comments), but rather than admit it outright they have to invent another reality to exist in. Stewart provides that, so there they sit, in their little bubble. It’s sick.

They must have mental disorders. It doesn’t take a genius to see that Stewart is wildly exaggerating. He’s taking Glenn out of context at virtually every turn by presenting 0.5% of conversations, many from first-person historical perspectives he isn’t even applying to current events, and acting like he‘s saying we’re all going to be rounded up and shot. In many cases it‘s the equivalent of Alan Grayson’s “Taliban Dan” ad. (By the way- read Grayson’s Wikipedia article. He’s portrayed as a victim over being called out on that.)

I’d be suing, personally. Defamation, slander, whatever you want to call it. Can you believe it’s THESE people who want the fairness doctrine? If it was ever done legitimately and people were forced to see both sides, they’d all be off the air within a month. Stewart, Colbert, Maddow, Matthews, Olbermann, Schultz… and especially that guy I can never remember the name of… what’s his name? The creepy looking liar who sounds like he has no testicles. Oh, yeah: Mike Malloy.

But anyway, make sure to call these morons out. It only takes one person.

You obviously relish ( not the hot dog kind ) pointing out grammatical errors made by others to make yourself appear to be so much smarter than the huddled masses.

I am less worried about an occasional grammatical “faux paus” than I am about comments like:

“On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.”

“The Middle East is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries.”

“What I was suggesting — you’re absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith…”

“I’ve now been in 57 states — I think one left to.”

“In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.”

And, here are some more Obama gaffes…but of course he’s so superior to Palin.

Holocaust gaffe: claims ‘uncle’ liberated Auschwitz, but Soviet troops freed the Nazi camp.

Obama says his father served in World War II. Obama Sr. was 5 yrs. old whn WWII started. His stepfather was six.

The funniest of course is that America has 57 states as mentioned above. His Muslim tongue was quicker than his brain, but I guess we just have to ignore his gaffes and demean Sarah’s. Oh, the hypocrisy of the trolls! Trolls send your president a geography book. I not only have a fifth grade one, but third grade might help him even more.

As far as Sarah Palin confusing the space/arms race–sorry I disagree with trolls’ assessments. The two were inexplicably intertwined. She’s not really off base here any more than she was with blood libel, which was also pounced upon with a great deal of unwarranted and incorrect bias.

Sarah’s not as dumb as folks on the left hope to convince the American people she is. Keep at it, though. You just make yourselves look pitifully weak and afraid.

I know this is off topic, but just had to jump in to point out some additional gaffes not mentioned.

If these types of comments are common, it is simply a reflection of the character of the people on the site. Now I know Triumvirate is a big word and it refers to another dead Empire, and a type of ruling system they had there sometime before Sputnik. I‘m pretty sure they didn’t collapse from the Space-Race, oh wait it was from government overspending, a welfare state, the dependence on foreign goods, and the complete loss of morality as they once knew it when their “Republic” had been modeled after some of the best ideas borrowed from Greek civilization. I guess we should follow Kaiser, that’s another name for Ceasar, Obama‘s suggestion and look to the Soviet Union’s achievements to inspire us, you know like Sputnik, after all that’s what Obama does. To coin a phrase from Uncle Bill, “You PinHead”! Oh was that unkind? I’m sorry. Don’t show this to your girlfriend or you might not get your refridgerator sticker this week.

It’s not just language, it’s your history. Greeks never had a Republic, they had city-states and the most democratic of which was Athens, which was a direct democracy, not a Republic. Are you thinking of Rome? Caesar became one of many terms for a Roman Emperor since he effectively ended the 450-year-old Roman Republic, so maybe that is what you were going for. Kaiser is a corruption of Caesar, but it is German not Russian. Maybe you were thinking of another corruption of caesar; the Russian term Czar. As in Czar Nicholas II was the last Czar of the Romanov dynasty before he was killed in the Bolshevik Revolution. However, you seem to then hint that the assassination of the entire Russian royal family was a good thing. It doesn’t make much sense, but you seem to assert that the USSR fell because it got away from its true revolutionary character? Does that mean Lenin and Stalin had it right, but it was Kruschev who messed it up? Or maybe Gorbachev with his western thinking was what corrupted the Soviet Union and caused it to fall? It doesn’t matter who wrote it, it is a confusing mass of conservative buzzwords.

Speaking of out of context. Bill even said that it was a comment that should have been taken down. Doesn’t everyone here get riled up when some particularly wrathful Blaze comments are taken out of context and used to paint the Tea Party with a violent, racist brush?

Gov palin will never be President. We all know that. But she has indeed energized a nation.
No, she doesn‘t speak the King’s English, but normal people don’t either. She has been speaking to, instead of at, the American people.

Middle America agrees with her when she says “don’t retreat… Reload!” Those same dumb Americans who made this the greatest country in the history of the world!

The Left was shaken to their core when she showed up. She has real American values, like REAL energy independence through getting the oil out of OUR country instead of somewhere where they hate us. Putting Americans to work getting thatoil, processing it and selling it.

Unlike the Head of Homeland Security, she believes in strong and protected borders. As do all Americans. Obama believes in open borders with Mexico.

So again, will she be President? No. Her talents are needed to energize the American people to the greatness we are, and not be hampered by policy wonks. She speaks her mind, and that is refreshing today. And that scares the pants off the Government control people on the Left.

      @ encinom,

M, Fox News is a real news outlet. Jon Stewart is not. Jon Stewart is a comedian who does satire for a living. CNN carries Michele Bachmann‘s Tea Party Express response to Obama’s SOTU address and is promptly criticized by all the Lefties. They say – how dare they legitimize Michele Bachmann, why she doesn’t know how to look into the camera that is recording her. They disregard that her response was “live” to the Tea Party Express. The Tea Party is a “player” whether the Lefties like it or not. They are why the Democrats are a minority in the USA House. If things go as planned, the Republicans will be the majority in the Senate in 2012. The very best thing that can happen in 2012, is that Barack Obama won’t reelected in 2012. That will turn this Nation away from the disease of socialism and the redistribution of wealth from people who actually accomplish something to people who are only looking for their “freebies”.

      A) don’t hold yourself to the standards to which you hold us. (i.e. RESEARCHING something to validate it.) a Five-minute searc would have yielded you the context you needed for the 9/11 victim clip that you link.

      B) You are intentionally mis-informing us. I therefore don’t care to deal with someone who hypocritically denounces mis-information and agenda’s when you propogate it yourself.

      OR

      C) You.. are weakminded or lazy and accept spoon-fed information.

You are welcome to introduce OTHER reasons for your failed Glenn Beck bash. THose are the three I could think of.

It’s my desire to open discourse with people who actually seek the truth, not cookie-cut it to fit one’s own narrative.

On that note your implication of Fox news concerning this story has traction so far. I will try to find time to do more digging.

All I have to say is “Wow”.
      Wow….just wow…

My girlfriend is a 7th grade teacher and was talking about that part of the speech today in class and the kids all understood it, then tonight we watch the Greta V show on Fox and we listen to Sarah Palin talk and we are on the floor laughing our as_es off.

I know this story has nothing to do with Sarah Palin but I have to post my comments because I know the Blaze will not post Sarah Palin’s biggest and latest gaffe.

During an appearance with Greta Van Susterin on Fox News, Sarah Palin criticized Obama for referencing Sputnik during the State of the Union, because she believes that Sputnik brought down communism. She said, “Yeah, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time, that it resulted in the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union.”
Yep, Sarah confused the space race with the arms race.

When asked about Obama’s Sputnik reference, Palin said, “That was another one of those WTF moments that when he has so often repeated the Sputnik moment that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. He needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space.
Yeah, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time, that it resulted in the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union, so I listen to that Sputnik talk over and over again, and I think we don’t need one of those.” (In some bizarre word association, Palin referenced a coffee shop in Washington state and claimed we need a Spudnut moment.)

It seems that Sister Sarah doesn’t actually know what Sputnik was. She knows Sputnik relates to the space race, which is good, but Palin claimed that debt from the space race brought down the Soviet Union. Yes, Sputnik was so damaging that it was launched in October 1957, and a scant 34 years later, which is a blink of an eye really, the Soviet Union was no more. I think Palin needs to study her Republican Reagan mythology a little bit more closely.
She has confused the space race with arms races.

There is not a historian in the world who believes that the space race brought about the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Her criticism of Obama’s use of Sputnik was completely invalidated by the fact that she got the history completely wrong. Even on the show of her best friend Greta Van Susteren, she couldn’t hold it together and carry off the illusion of potentially being a serious candidate for even 20 minutes.

We can now add US history to growing list of things that Palin knows nothing about.

Palin definitely speaks for a part of America, the part of America that flunked the 5th grade.

Yea Stewart himself joked that his show isnt news yet how many times does he try to be serious. It seems to me he is using the comedy tag to get away with murder as he knows he has a fan base that thinks he is a true source of news. Worst off they take what he says as gospel. That circus he and Colbert held Oct 31 was proof. There was countless numbers of ill informed zombies that attend who thought they were up to speed on whats going on in the country. I

I think its about time Stewart got beat up a bit for doing crap like this. O’Reilly should really lay into him and be the Bill O we wish was still around. This 2011 O’Reilly has lost his edge like he use to have when he thundered away on Bwarney Fwank, GerARdo and Phil Donahue.

I watch Stewart often and enjoy his show. While he is definitely left of centre, he has also targeted democrats and even Obama in the past. He is clever and usually funny and and he is needed to ***** the balloons or the pompous and foolish. Is he occassionally unfair or wrong? Certainly. But then who isn’t?

When O’reilly says that a certain scurrilous post should have been taken down, he is wrong. Free speech applies as equally to foolish and hateful people as it does to us good guys. ANY censorship puts us onto the slippery slope.

Laughing at foolish people is healthy, even when those people are occassionally ourselves. And humour is a very effective but underrated tool.

Both programs caused a huge drain on the communist economy, but the arms race was by far the most expensive. I too got a chuckle out of Sarah Palin making yet another grammatical faux pas.

At the beginning of the interview she said, “He would aspire Americans to celebrate.” Greta must have cringed and barely avoided biting her lip.

My gawd Ms. Palin. You never cease to underwhelm us. Didn’t any of those colleges you attended have a remedial grammar class? If not, then whoever is writing your speeches should enroll in one tomorrow.

Here’s a free tip for you and your writer)s). The word ‘aspire’ is a transitive verb and does not take a direct object like ‘American’.

C’mon Sarah. You continue to reinforce the notion that you are not only incurious and ill-informed – but also poorly educated.

In closing, I “refudiate” your misuse of “aspire”. Perhaps you meant INSPIRE. [shaking head in utter disbelief]

      Footnote:
Don’t even think about searching my post for errors. Ms. Palin majored in journalism and should be expected to be well versed in grammar. OTOH, I majored in computer science and have a built in excuse for poor grammar and spelling errors. [wry smile]

On the topic of Palin I could care less, but to say the space race and the arms race were two different things is insane. This race began with Hitler’s V-2 rockets. I came to that conclusion myself because I believe in freedom of speech, freedom of the individual, freedom of enterprise, and the freedom to spend my income after, reasonable and modest taxation, in any way I please.

Countries that have followed these precepts have excelled. Countries that have wholly or partially gone in the opposite direction have suffered economically and have damaged the wellbeing of their citizens to a greater or lesser degree.

When said countries get into trouble, who comes to help? The good guys. Who goes to war to get rid of dictators slaughtering their populace? The good guys. Who often gets kicked in the teeth for offering physical or financil aid by the very people that called for help? The good guys. And it is the good guys that absorb the criticism and insults and stand ready to help again.

Or perhaps you are asking me because I am a New Zealander. New Zealand has been an ally of the US in WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam (it is a little known fact that NZ took more casualties as a percentage of their population in Korea and Vietnam than the US did), Desert Storm (limited to medical and engineering), and one of our SAS was recently awarded the Victoria Cross in Afghanistan.

I assume that you are a leftwinger, and while I must allow that I don’t know everything, I am a PROUD NEW ZEALANDER, right of centre, and one of the good guys!

O‘Reilly has completely missed the point of Jon Stewart’s broadcast.

Stewart only quoted O’Reilly as having used that phrase AFTER showing a clip of Kelly saying “Fox News has NEVER compared ANYONE to Nazis”. He then followed it with literally DOZENS of clip of almost every major Fox News anchor making some reference to Nazism (even of Glenn Beck using the word only 3 and a half hours after Kelly said no one does).

Stewart was simply pointing out the hypocrisy at Fox News – which he successfully did.

I hope she has people working for her that advise her against running because it would be embarrassing. in regards to this story, the only problem here,,, is that bill oreilly actually uses stewarts bit out of context. stewart goes on to show bill make nazi references in other cases. and then shows beck making several nazi comparisons, and megan kelly, etc. etc. it wasn’t one instance, it was like 20 instances. If bill was honest here, he would have defended all the accusations, sadly, he could only defend one. ALSO, that huffpo blog clip, was from the COMMENTS on the HuffPo, it wasn’t by any actual writers. Sadly, John Stewart holds a higher journalistic standard than O’Reilly and the other hacks on Fox News. Here’s why. John Stewart correctly called out Cohen for making a false equivalence argument between those attacking Obamacare and those attacking Jews. The former leads to bad policy, since the attack is largely based on false information, while the latter leads to the death of people based upon false information PLUS the inciting of people to violence and murder. It is obvious that one should use more measured words to describe the pernicious dishonesty of those who propagate lies about Obamacare, since their sin is far, far less troubling than that of the Nazi’s. This is what Stewart argued. Furthermore, Stewart pointed out that the conservatives (including O’Reilly, who is conservative although he fashions himself as a centrist) are hyporcritical since they use this very same over-the-top name-calling all of the time. Another Stewart segment showed Megyn Kelly saying that Fox never does this, and then showed several examples of it happening on her own show, in emails written by Roger Ailes, and even on other Fox News programs within 24 hours of Kelly making that false claim. This is very embarrassing for Fox, so out comes the spinning, which is what O’Reilly does here. The problem is that O‘Reilly doesn’t address the other half-dozen examples, chosen out of hundreds seen on Fox in the last couple of years, but only the one directed at him that he believes shows selective editing. The others likely do not have such editing problems, since I had seen some of them on Fox in their entirety and know that this wasn’t a problem. But more importantly, even after seeing the entirety of O‘Reilly’s comments, it DOESN‘T CHANGE the validity of Stewart’s observation. To compare a few unnamed bloggers on the left (and why doesn‘t O’Reilly cite them if they are real?) to the systematic dehumanization of an entire race of people for no other reason than their accidental birth into a Jewish faith and culture, is to engage in the very same false equivalence that Cohen did. I personally would never think, much less publicly write that I hope that Nancy Reagan dies, but I also would not put the comment of someone who did on the same level of moral reprehensibility as systematic propaganda campaigns designed to support mass murder of innocent people. I seriously cannot believe that O’Reilly is this intellectually challenged that he cannot see his false equivalence argument, and how it is very similar to the one he complains about from Cohen. It underscores the fact that he doesn’t think through arguments on the merits, but merely frames and evaluates issues in terms of what hurts his team (i.e., the GOP) or helps the other team (i.e., Democrats). This is just another forms of fact-free propaganda where political ends trump facts and logical consistency. It could be that he maintains this viewpoint since it is highly lucrative–there are millions of people who only want to watch what they already believe, regardless of the validity of those facts–or it could be that he is not a ratings whore but just a dim bulb of a pundit. No one can know for sure. But to call out Stewart, who has shown himself far more intelligent over the last several years on his show, after totally missing the point of his argument and failing to rebut it, is really much funnier than anything Stewart has done by way of jokes on this particular issue. Ironic and funny. O’Reilly cracks me up.

      @ABC
I’m really sad that since your firing from MSNBC , your only enjoyment comes from leaving comments on the Blaze.

I have always said that Jon Stewart is a make believe news person reporting on real news ….. the way he sees it…..

InTheKnow clearly is not. I’m not a comedian, and what I wrote is not a rant. It is a logically sound, fact-supported explanation for why O’Reilly is wrong and Stewart is right. That you can gullibly believe lies and muddled logic while laughing at the opposite underscores how disfunctional the discourse and democracy in America has become. You are entitled to your own opinion (O’Reilly is cool, Stewart is not), but not your own facts and logic (that writing you wish Mrs. Reagan would die in the tub is the same as repeatedly generating propaganda to help facilitate genocide; or insisting that even if they are not the same, O’Reilly is logically right anyway because, you know, he’s cooler than Stewart). Ignoring facts and logic is never a laughing matter.

Please get your facts straight, people! Jon Stewart is a comedian, not a news analyst. So is Maher, Rosie and Behar. And I am willing to admit that Glenn Beck is a pundit, not a reporter. It is getting to be ridiculous that people are citing these people as being analysts. You libs out there do not believe Fox is a legitmate news agency because they tell both sides of a story instead of only reporting what you want known. Fox is whuping the other media outlets in ratings! Get over it! Gripe about something else. And…………no! I am not a Republican. I am an independent.

      @NZKIWI

Don’t apologize for me! If this clown’s boyfriend is really a 7th grade teacher, he must have the same thinking and leanings of this clown! If this 7th grade teacher, is teaching his/our children, his misinformed way of life, then the end is a lot closer than you think. Pray for a forgiving and merciful creator!

Sadly people think Fox is news.

What’s funny is that, even in context, O‘Reilly STILL doesn’t have a leg to stand on. No, comparing them to Nazi’s STILL DOES NOT APPLY! What HuffPo said (if in context) was terrible and they should be ashamed of themselves for it. However, comparing it to Nazism in ANY way is absolutely ridiculous.

Sorry Bill, but the “They were big jerks so it’s ok I called them Nazis is ok!” doesn’t work. I also like how he ignored the other instances of Bill comparing people to Nazis. Bill would really do best to not try to stand toe-to-toe with Stewart; he loses every time.

Jon Stewart again rebutted O’Reily last night claiming the following two points:

      1) The point was not in what context the Nazi reference was used, it was that Megan Kelly said Fox “has never” used that rhetoric. The simple fact that Stewart was able to find such talk proves his point.

      2) The quotation that O’Reilly was referring to was not posted by the Huffington Post, it was comment left by one of the visitors of the site (much in the same way we comment on the Blaze). It is unfair and deceptive of O’Reilly to claim that statement was FROM the Huffington Post in the same way would be deceptive for someone to say that Fox News hates Black, Islam, and Gays simply because the people that leave comments on their sites make those claims.

I am sure many of you are too stubborn to realize the inherent hypocrisy of O‘Reilly’s claims, but for the few that have working brains I would like to follow with one final statement. Jon Stewart is a comedian, yes, but he is an exceptionally intelligent man and very politically cognoscente. He makes light of the stressful world in which we live because, he believes, if you don’t laugh at some of the news stories you would want to cry.

And seriously people, he has a point.
